12-Year-Old Guitar Sensation JACK RIPPER Interviewed At ROCKLAHOMA; Video Available - July 30, 2008
XM's Boneyard host Eddie Trunk, who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM, conducted an interview with Phoenix, Arizona-based 12-year-old guitar sensation Jack Ripper at this year's Rocklahoma festival, which was held July 9-13, 2008 in Pryor, Oklahoma. The seven-minute clip, which includes footage of Jack's performance of the national anthem at Rocklahoma, can be viewed below.

Jack started playing guitar at the age of 7. He always loved music. He first was influenced by listening to Alice Cooper, who is still his favorite singer and band. After taking lessons for about a year and a half, Jack started making great progress. Now, he decided, was time to learn songs he liked such as "Schools Out", "Crazy Train", and "Smoke on the Water". As Jack learned these songs, he was having difficulty with the nuances of soloing, bending, etc. Jack was introduced to a great guitar teacher by the name of John Davis. John focused specifically on Jack's mechanics. Almost overnight, Jack was playing riffs and songs that he had only imagined himself doing. John also spent a lot of time teaching Jack how to learn songs by only listening, "by ear."

In the summer of 2006, Jack was introduced to his current drummer, Ron Fields. Ron took it upon himself to spend time jamming with Jack. It was during this summer that Jack came into his own as a performer and professional band member. Ron was and is a great influence.

Speaking of prodigy - Does anyone know what ever happened to that Steve Vai kid prodigy? The one in Vai’s video playing the Ibanez. I though he would have an amazing musical future, that was over 10 years ago.

that's the coolest kid ever. not because of his guitar skills either (I usually feel bad for child prodigies) but because of the way he talks and acts.. confident, sincere, humble.

I mean it's not hard to look cool in front of eddie trunk but damn this kid is just COOL.

The Kid can play and the best to him in the years to come ,But com'om JACK RIPER at 12 years old.Let the kid grow up.Before you throw a name like that on the kid.Now if that's his real name then......I'm still wondering what his parents were thinking.Anyway by the time he grows up there will be no music business to make money anyway. But who know, could be the next Eddie,Randy or Ace

That kid is pretty damn good for being 12. It's awesome that he's playing electric guitar. Though, there are plenty of kids younger than him that are far more prodigious. Still cool.

Obviously has some natural ability but I wouldn't use the word 'prodigy.' He got a very early start at age seven so that represents five years of playing. A dedicated lead player with ability should be able to achieve that level of playing within five years. Most guys get there at 16 or 17, this kid got a head start. No hint of genius here just an excellent homage to the traditional guitar heroes. I agree that 12 is way to young for a stage name and that 'living the life' Rockstar stuff.

many of you are trying to remember Thomas McRocklin (seems like a real name, like Jack Ripper, doesn't it?) I wish I played that well at 22, let alone 12! I wish him all the luck in getting somewhere. Be persistent kid!

Any Blabbermouthers from Holland on here that think he looks like Georgina Verbaan, too?

this "prodigy" is working retail in a guitar store..... .ROCK..

However, the drummer from bad4good (thomas's band) has done ok, playing, with some of the guys from Suicidal and Infectious Grooves. Rich parents, so he always has a somewhat profile gig.

................from the "Arena" heavy metal documentary on youtube, back in the 80's there was a kick ass little guitarist called Thomas "McRocklin", that kid kicked ass, but where is he now?

Most of them I have checked out have wicked technical ability but they are mostly just whipping through scales over horribly boring backing tracks. I love solos and shredding but only within the context of a good song. I like Tipton's Beyond the Realms of Death solo better than any shred I have ever heard.
