METALLICA: New Studio Footage Posted Online
- Aug. 2, 2008
|
|
New "fly-on-the-wall" footage of METALLICA working on its new album has surfaced on the MissionMetallica.com web site and can be viewed below (courtesy of "Blitzkreig66six"). METALLICA has officially set Friday, September 12 as the "worldwide" release date for its new album, "Death Magnetic". It should be noted, however, that various online retailers — including Japan's CDJapan.co.uk and UK's Amazon.co.uk — are listing different release dates for their territories that are consistent with the traditional release dates in those countries. Tuesdays are when almost all CDs are issued in the U.S. METALLICA's new CD will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same day the album arrives in stores. The band is offering the record for sale in numerous configurations, ranging from a digital-only release to a deluxe "coffin box" that will come with a bonus CD, a DVD, a T-shirt, guitar picks and other goodies. "Death Magnetic" official track listing: 01. That Was Just Your Life02. The End Of The Line03. Broken, Beat & Scarred04. The Day That Never Comes05. All Nightmare Long06. Cyanide07. The Unforgiven III08. The Judas Kiss09. Suicide & Redemption10. My Apocalypse
(Thanks: Blitzkreig66six)

sounds okay, but doesn't Metallica realize how UN-METAL it is for Kirk to do those stretches, or Jame'z' to do his gargling vocal warm ups? Seems also to me that their recording process is waaay too refined. I'll keep an open mind until I hear the album, and yes, I will buy.

You have to admit when Priest or Maiden release lackluster or mediocre cd's (yes the latest releases by Im & JP)the backlash isn't as bad as Metallicas. It just goes to show that Metallica can still stir up that much emotion. I think Metallica will suprise the haters.

Maybe Rick shaved and cut his hair, maybe that's what he looks like under there. I would say he's probably doing what he's done in later years with Slayer, someone else works during the recording while he has "executive producing" credits. Just speculating, as we've seen alot of that dude on these daily fly on the wall videos. I can't believe that no one has made a comment about guinevere.crying's comment about how she likes to swallow :) Love Metallica or hate Metallica, I hope they redeem themselves with this record.

As much as I love Metallica...talk about breaking music into a montonous exercise. Going over things a trillion times with that Pro Tools bullshit or whatever they use just ain't right man! I guarantee if the Metallica of 1982 knew what they had become in 2008 for the success in terms of fame, sales and most importantly creatively, they would be horrified!

"Also, another thing that a lot of you are ignorant on when you try to bring up Pro Tools as this awful evil force in music recording. Newsflash: 99% of all modern recordings are done with some type of DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Pro Tools, Cubase, Acid, Sonar (which I personally use) and various other computer based recording applications. The days of analog tape are long gone in favor of digital sound data that is easier to manage and edit. And it's less expensive and saves a hell of a lot of time. The beauty of DAWs is that you can "see" the music on a computer screen rather than only hear it from analog playback.
Tip: let the professionals worry about the "monotonous excercise" of recording."
THANK YOU!
I've been a musician for the past fourteen years and have recorded in a studio setting several times now. If you all think these bands just walk in and set up their gear while some dude presses record with a big microphone hovering overhead in the middle of the room. . . you're ignorant to the process. That is done, but only to get the rough song on record so you can take it home and fine tune your parts with your repsective instrument. The actual recording is a complex process that takes hours and hours a day. This is very prevalent in the metal studio experience. If you want a raw, one take studio effort, I suggest you switch your genre of choice to punk. It's just not done that much anywhere else.
All respectable programs you mentioned, except Acid. That one kind of sucks. I personally like Nuendo.

Just because they weren't using pro-tools in 1982, I'm sure they were still using the latest technology of the time (not sure what it was in '82. I doubt DAT was used yet). Kill 'Em All was probably their most raw recording, but it was clear as early as Ride the Lighting (which was released in 1984), that they had already succumbed to the rigorous process of a polished recording effort. Yep, the multitracking with overdubs was happening even in the days of Cliff. So... dumb of anyone to comment on the process you're viewing these videos in a negative way. It's just the way it works.
