BLACK SABBATH's 'Paranoid' Getting Deluxe Treatment
- Aug. 6, 2008
|
|
The Pulse of Radio reports that BLACK SABBATH's 1970 second album, "Paranoid", will be reissued on September 29 as both a double-vinyl set and a deluxe three-CD package, according to a press release. The record, which was recorded in eight days, is SABBATH's best-selling effort and was their commercial breakthrough in the U.S. Containing some of the band's biggest songs, such as "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, "Paranoid"is considered one of heavy metal's most influential and all-time masterpieces. The CD set will contain the original album on one disc and a 1974 quadraphonic mix on the second, while a third CD will feature never-before-released early instrumental versions of six of the album's eight songs and two with alternate lyrics. "Paranoid" has sold four million copies in the U.S. and was SABBATH's only album to ever reach No. 1 in their native country, the U.K. "Paranoid" was followed by 1971's "Master of Reality", also considered by many fans to be one of the group's finest efforts. At their long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, guitarist Tony Iommi and singer Ozzy Osbourne talked about the respect that BLACK SABBATH has earned in the music industry. Iommi: "I think it's great. I think it's taken a few years, mind (you), because I think for a while, nobody took us seriously. But, you know, our friends in the music business and that obviously did. As we went on, the more we carried on, the more we proved, the more we stayed there, you know? And I think we got the respect from that." Osbourne: "I never thought anybody liked us, and people on the Ozzfest would come to me and go, 'You were really one of our inspirations.'And I didn't really, I didn't believe it, you know?" The original lineup of BLACK SABBATH has reunited several times in the last decade to either headline its own tour or Ozzfest, but there are no plans at the moment for the band to either record or tour.

How was Ozzy not aware that people liked Black Sabbath. After millions of albums sold almost 40 years later and sold out shows for years and years but he doesn't know that people were into them??
I guess according to some people on this website, since Paranoid only sold 4 million in the states then that makes Poison and Warrant and Limp Bizkit "BETTER" because they and Linkin Park sold MORE than that. Unfuckingbelievable!
This is THE metal masterpiece from the creators of metal themselves!

Did Roadrunner find some shitty recorded versions of Sabbath that they didn't put on the record or a song with a guest musician and just waited for Decades to put out the Delux Digi Pack? lol

This is *supposed* to be part of a SERIES of Sabbath reissues, this one being the first... But this first one was slated to be released three years ago, and was stopped by an injunction. I'm not holding my breath, but hoping.

This cd package sounds like a redundant collection of crap. That video is awesome, though. I never cared for Paranoid the song, but that live version sounded incredible. If the rest of that concert became available on DVD, I would buy it in a second.

This sounds a like a total waste. For starters, there is no amount of remastering that can improve upon the sound quality already there. It could quite possibly make it sound worse by exposing technological flaws. Second, what is the point of issuing a Quadrophonic recording when you need special equipment that hasn't been made in over 30 years? Finally, if the lyrics weren't good enough to make it to CD, why release it? The reason why Sabbath hasn't put anything out is that they admit they don't have anything worthy. So why put out unfinished product? Corporate fucking greed, that's why. My copy of Paranoid has been uploaded to my ipod and is preserved on my hard drive until I buy a new mac, and transfer it to that hard drive. No need to buy this.

"while a third CD will feature never-before-released early instrumental versions of six of the album's eight songs and two with alternate lyrics. "
Worth the price of admission, right there! I will definitely be buying this for those unheard alternate versions! One of the songs with alternate lyrics is probably the "Walpurgis" version of War Pigs, and the other might be Hand of Doom. I've never heard the instrumental versions at all though. This will be a must have for the Sabbath completist!

How about a 4th CD with a newly mixed version. Sound replace all the drums, re-amp the guitars and beef everything up.... They could 'auto tune' Ozzy hahah I would like to hear it done right.
You can still have the original for the purists.

That video is from the famous "Live in Paris" show from 1970, and the entire concert is widely available on bootleg. I've owned both VHS and DVD versions for years.
It is by far the best concert video I've seen of Black Sabbath. The band is super tight and Ozzy is in top form. The tracks on the full length video are:
N.I.B. BEHIND THE WALL OF SLEEP WAR PIGS PARANOID HAND OF DOOM IRON MAN BLACK SABBATH
There is also backstage footage that is amusing. It's a great glimpse of early Sabbath.

The alternate lyrical versions will be for "Paranoid" and "Planet Caravan". I've heard that Sabbath's old manager, Patrick Meehan, is behind this release, so I don't know if this gets the band's endorsement or not. Their history with Meehan is not a good one.

Isn't Meehan the one who's sitting on The Rebel and When I Came Down? If so, and he's behind this, this sounds slightly promising if this ends up being a series of releases in hopes that maybe those 2 tracks see the light of day to the public.

"Second, what is the point of issuing a Quadrophonic recording when you need special equipment that hasn't been made in over 30 years?" A lot of the albums that was originally recorded in Quad have been released as DVD-Audio (like Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" & Deep Purple's "Machine Head") that can be played through most home theater systems with 5:1 audio. So that is why the Quad version. Plus...... in some cases the recording could also be an "alternate" recording performance wise.
Yeah.... I'll get it!

As a big Black Sabbath fan for about 25 years, I have to say I have no interest in this. I own the Black Box (which sounds incredible) re-mastered Dio era, re-mastered Born Again and all the Tony Martin cd's which sound pretty good. Not to mention cassettes and vinyl I own. I don't need this. Love Sabbath but they have enough of my money.

I hope you're right, that the Quad mix will be on a DVD-Audio disc... Because otherwise, I have the same question that mcman1971 has. If it's a DVD-Audio (which I thought was a dead format), I'll pick this up...
