DUFF MCKAGAN Says VELVET REVOLVER Is Still Looking For New Singer - Aug. 8, 2008
Jonathan Cohen of Billboard.com reports: Contrary to reports suggesting former SPACEHOG frontman Royston Langdon is in line to become the new singer of VELVET REVOLVER, the band is still making up its mind about who will replace Scott Weiland.

Bassist Duff McKagan tells Billboard.com that although VELVET REVOLVER did play with Langdon and that "he's f*cking awesome, at this point I'd have to say no" on him becoming the new singer.

"We just have to make sure it's the right guy," he says, adding that Weiland's angry departure from the band this spring has brought him closer to group members Slash, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner.

" wonder how's the musicianship on VR 1 and 2? Surely not up to par with the band's past with GNR? "

Yeah Duff and Slash got shittier at playing their instruments over the years because you know people who continue to constantly play their instruments get worse over time... NOT! Are you stupid the guys are still able to play as good if not better than the GNR days the songs may or may not be as good but their musicianship and ability is still there. Oh wait you also think Chirs Cornell's best work was in Audioslave... so you have no brain anyways... shouldn't have even tried to make a point with someone like you.

Royston Langdon fit really well with Spacehog. I'm not sure he's the guy for VR.

I suggested Mark Lanegan or Travis Meeks. Only time will tell.

corey taylor? actually no, he's happy in just stonesour / slipknot
david draiman?

uhhh..phil anselmo?? no, i bet they dont want another druggy

i get the feeling VR wants to be a band that gets radio play and they want to be "hip" but still maintain some level of respectability (i.e. they wont get the guy from papa roach)

and most likely theyll get a guy not in a really well known band now

chris cornell would be the perfect choice, but a lot of people dont want him after the audioslave stuff.

in my opinion, they really should give up all pretenses and just pick sebastian bach

does that make them kind of a nostalgia trip? yes
does that make them kind of less relevant on the radio? yes
does that make them seem like a second tier gnr? yes

BUT

it probably will make for the best music and best live shows.
just my opinion.

they should get Keith Caputo but still let him do his solo albums.
And Cornells best stuff was with Soundgarden. the first and last Audioslave where good albums, much better then anything by RATM.
Weiland is good but it's good to see him back in STP.
and the musicianship is better in Velvet Revolver because they have gotten better players, and the songs are just different not any worse, GNR just came at a great time and everyone has great memmories about that time and wouldnt admit anything new is close to being as good. it's like that with every band that gets popular. they just get older and out of fashion but still keep on making great music but only the real fans keep track, and some new bands that supposed to be so good get famous but usually the older bands are making better music, at least for the last 10 years or so.

LOL @ Scott Stapp

I think either Chris Cornell or Sebastian Bach could be way cool. The more I think about Bach could make it awesome...

Phil Anselmo would give them a way angrier and more metal vibe, probably wouldn't fit the more rock n' roll VR thing.

Then again, a dude like Hagar wouldn't be raw enough probably...

Still voting for original GnR reunion for Chinese Democracy. And world peace while I'm at it.

He can sing cleanly, he can sing cheap and nasty too. Joe Lynn Turner has already covered a few of GNR's songs on tribute albums. It will never happen, I know, but he would be cool. Also, JLT knows how to party responsibly and Blackmore instilled a good work ethic in the lad early in JLT's career.

First of all, the reason Bret Scallions is no longer the lead singer of Fuel is that he blew his voice out. He now plays bass guitar in another band because he can no longer sing.

I still kind of think it's Chris Daughtry.

They said it would take negotiations, and he is big enough that it would be necessary.

Sorum said the guy is bigger than Bach which basically counts out almost everyone listed above (except Cornell).

Daughtry and Velvet Revolver have the same record label (different representatives), and Slash and Daughtry have recorded together in the past.

Daughtry is the anti-Weiland. He gets up before 5:00 everyday. He does not use drugs. He is described as one of the hardest workers in music.

From Daughtry's point of view, his solo bubble will soon burst. He would have a chance to join one of the last great rock bands on the planet, in what will be their prime.

I think Weiland is great, creative, good voice, writer, & performer, and belongs in STP....but he's Pissing them off too, he was late going on & the word is Robert Deleo wanted to kill him, Scott's a mess. It seems VR were correct. Scott still speaks about them from the stage, like a jealous ex...Slash is still jamming with Perry Farrell, word was a 'big' singer contacted them. Jane's is reuniting though?....I think they'd want to crush Mike Patton

Bach would definitely rule with VR. He could easily do the Weiland VR songs, they could do some of the better Skid Row songs ( Monkey Business, Slave to the Grind, Wasted Time ), and he could probably do the AFD era GNR songs just as good as Axl ( Paradise City, Its so Easy ). I was upset when they chose Weiland over Baz, but could see their reasoning for it. IMO the first VR album was so so , but I really dig Libertad, its a really good cd that you could listen straight through over and over .

Now, for Corabi, the dude could lay it down. He doesnt have Baz's pipes, but, hes a solid songwriter, plays guitar ( 3 guitar band... nice ) and seems to be available.

Love Slash, love Scott, love Duff, but Velvet Revolver SUCKED!

Terrible songs, bad chemistry, boring live. It was not equal to the sum of its parts.

Glad STP are back. I hope Slash does another great solo album like 'Ain't Life Grand' - Duff can play bass on that. Sorum and the bald guy can go sell shoes - no one cares.

And Spacehog were shitty live and on CD. One hit wonder because they only recorded one good song.

love lenny, that would be killer, he's friend's, he'd add a funky element, but I have to agree, don't think he'd ever do it, & its too straight ahead rock for him....I semi agree with another blog, that VR was not as good as the sum of their parts, don't think they sucked(had some great songs), but they were sort of disappointing live(I'm a huge Slash fan, loved his Snakepit albums & shows), I think Weiland added a creative element but probably watered Slash down, & Weiland needed to be in a more eclectic band(STP). Though Weiland burnt that bridge. And now is doing the same with STP....they love Cornell's voice, but he's not a GnR guy, again, probably wants more artsy band. who knows. Perry would be cool, but he's getting long in the tooth. (49).

There are plenty of good options out there, Corabi, Whit, Oni Logan (excellent idea) and Baz but none of them will get the job. Slash and the boys aren't going to pick another guy that will over shadow them like that junkie did. They will pick someone safe that will help them sell a shitload of records even if it means the music's weak like a Daughtery or that lame-o from Fuel. Fact is Slash, Duff and Sorum haven't done anything worth listening too since they had a band member named Izzy.

It's time for everyone to realize that VR sucks and will always suck.

I know the one singer you haven't thought of. Its very obvious. He did his time in an early nineties band, very popular for their genre. He recently proved his mettle on singing classics by Deep Purple and others. He even did a full cover album of Back In Black by AC/DC and did a stellar job. The man for the job is one Chris Barnes. We all know he can do it, he made some classic albums as a part of Cannibal Corpse, and made Six Feet Under's Graveyard Classics 2, hell we could even consider that his audition tape for VR.
