OZZFEST 2008: Review, Photos, Video Footage Available - Aug. 10, 2008
Todd Maternowski of Pegasus News has penned a review of this year's one-day Ozzfest, which took place last night (Saturday, August 9) at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas. An excerpt follows.

"While [Jonathan] Davis [of KORN] may have been the weakest act at Ozzfest, easily the most disappointing was the next one, Dallas' own HELLYEAH. Formed by former PANTERA drummer and rock god Vinnie Paul, and composed of half of MUDVAYNE, the band should have been one of the highlights of the day. Unfortunately, the charismatic Paul was hidden behind his massive double-bass drums for the entire set, leaving lead singer Chad Gray to carry the show. Like pretty much every rock supergroup in history (for quick reference, check out SUPERNOVA or VELVET REVOLVER), however, the sum never seems to be the whole of its parts, and the band churned out a sloppy set of same-sounding songs. The biggest crowd reactions during their set were to the breast-baring females on the big screens, rather than anything the band was doing onstage.

"Making it worse — at least for this particular die-hard fan of PANTERA — was the uninspired tributes to Dimebag Darrell. Shot on stage during a concert in 2004, Darrell has become a martyr for metal, as the universally loved and unbelievably talented guitarist was taken way before his time. His tributes, however, were disappointing. Other than a standout performance by the CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, as well as some great footage of Dimebag scrolled over the big screens, the attempt was not a good one. An acoustic performance of PINK FLOYD's 'Wish You Were Here' that sounded slightly out-of-tune was the topper."

What the above reviewer has to say about the new song Metallica played: "After 'Sanitarium', Metallica played their only disappointing song of the entire night, a cut off their new album Death Magnetic called 'Cyanide.' For metal fans who hated St. Anger, I've got some bad news: 'Cyanide' suffered from all the same problems as the disappointing last album: poor songwriting, low energy, choppy arrangement, and guitarwork that doesn't quite fit what the rest of the band is doing. While the song had some great riffs, it seemed they were almost immediately snuffed out by some too-complex drum bit or ill-timed tinny guitar solo."

I was at Ozzfest, about 10 people back from the stage, and I have to say that Hellyeah killed. The tribute was a bit disorganized, but the songs were cool once they got everything hooked up. The new Metallica song was good and 1000X better than anything from St. Anger. Jonathan Davis sucked as stated previously, as did Tankian - he absolutely killed the crowd energy after Hellyeah. Thank God that Ozzy (and Wylde especially) were in rare form - they actually played a song I've never seen Ozzy play (Fire in the Sky) to perfection - I didn't think that Ozzy learned new songs at his age. I listended critically to Metallica all night, and even Lars had a really good night. Kirk much less sloppy than usual too. And King Diamond - didn't miss a note. Who knew that he lives in Dallas. So, in summary, this reviewer can go back to Chuck E. Cheese and hand with his peers, because Ozzfest kicked ass.

Goatwhore and Rigor Mortis killed. Witchcraft was good. Some of the bands on the TX stage I could have gone without hearing.

Cavalera Conspiracy had technical problems at the beginning, but came back swinging during "Sanctuary". And they played "Roots Bloody Roots".

Jonathan Davis made me sick. Literally.

Hellyeah was good. Not amazing, but good.

The Dime tribute could have been WAY better...and made me feel worse.

Serj was ok, but I got out the front where I was because I felt sick already.

Ozzy was good. Mr. Crowley was amazing.

Metallica's "One" performance will be remembered. I thought the new song was ok. Not great, but ok.

All in all, an Ozzfest to be remembered.

1. I still think Kirk Windstein should've been part of this.

2. Who the hell's playin' guitars and bass on Mouth of War? Kerry King?

3. Playing Pantera songs as a "tribute" means you're paying tribute to Phil and Rex too. Playing Pantera songs as a tribute is like paying only 1/4 tribute that you intended to... I bet you didn't realize that, eh, Ms. Rita Haney?

4. It's cool that Ozzfest this year had a good mix of no-names (TX bands), underground legends (Soilent Green and Witchcraft, anyone?), radio-metals (Sevendust, HELLNO), and celeb metallers (i.e. Metallicats and Ozzy), but lack of coverage of first two categories just shows how exploitive the whole event is of heavy metal that we all cherish.

This idiot put down every single act pretty much and then said Cyanide is similar to St. Anger???!?!?!? It is the closest to the old shit they have done since Justice. It is so predictable, I have put in almost every post that people were just sitting there waiting to pounce and say something stupid with no thought behind it other then see it is St. Anger, no it is Load, Lars sucks, no Lars ruins it being to technical, Lars is not technical enough, Kirk does not solo, wait Kirk ruins it with his solos, Load and the Black album not enough changes, now this is to many changes......It never ever stops. This album is going to be a masterpiece. Go listen listen to Deicide you true metal guys on here.

"...Track five has another strong opening, with an uncharacteristic bouncing groove not a million miles away from RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE making appearances throughout setting off sharp riffs that come up against an irregular barrage of percussion that sets it off briefly on a more melodic path and builds up once again into a thrilling riff-fest mayhem... is the RATM song, I think we can all know that anything that sounds simple to these critics ears like this means that we have a pretty progressive album. This song still still has about ten times more riffs than your average RATM song!

Haha, Motorhead overrated? yeah sure, tell that to the 10000000 bands influenced by them. I will say I like Pantera, especially Power Metal-Vulgar. Not that alot of the riffs didn't seem like "Desecrator" from Exhorder's Slaughter in the Vatican, they were eerily similar at times but I won't bring up that argument again. Then again I just did...

I dont get the RATM reference. i guess these critics are kind of sheltered when it comes to a lot of metal. If anything, alot of it reminds me of Danzig circa 1992, something that is obvious with the main riff before the "ive already died" - a descending chromatic riff with that classic traditional metal power chord continuation

I got to the park just in time to see the Dimebag tribute, and I was honestly disappointed. Although I came to Ozzfest to enjoy Metallica and Ozzy, I looked forward to the tribute which disappointed. There seemed to be some technical difficulties between songs, but the few songs they played sounded great. And although I understood the meaning behind the "Pink Floyd, wish you were here" closing, it was cheesy. The crowd was uninspired, and I was just glad it was over.
As far as Ozzy and Metallica, they completely rocked. Both played over their allotted times, they played most of their signature songs, and although I personally enjoyed a few of Metallicas latest works off of St Anger, Load and Reload, they played No Tracks from these albums which I actually appreciated. Ozzy was himself.....I couldnt understand a word he said to the crowd, but you could hear everything perfectly clear when he sang. He amused himself during his performance with a firehouse, and buckets of water.. and he cheerfully demanded the crowd to "go fucking crazy" before and after every song. Zakk Wylde rocked the house with an outstanding as always, solo performance which transitioned into the Star Spangled Banner, which was nice to hear with the Olympics and all. Metallica played "a Creeping Death" to open their show and never looked back. They did play one track off of the new upcoming album, and it didn't sound terrible, but I want to listen to it again before I cast stones or give them any pats on the back.

All in all, it was a great day. Worth the money they charged. I would have preferred a better venue, perhaps more open and not so crowded once inside the stadium, but the weather was not as much of a factor as I thought it would have been, and I live in Michigan so I'm used to cooler daytime temps.

If you didn't go because you were afraid you would break a sweat, you are a pussy anyhow.
