'DIMEBAG' DARRELL ABBOTT Honored With OZZFEST Superjam
- Aug. 11, 2008
|
|
A special one-time only all-star tribute to fallen PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist and Texas native "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was held this past Saturday, August 9 at the one-day Ozzfest at Dallas' Pizza Hut Park. The tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell featured Abbott's brother, Vinnie Paul (acting as musical director and playing drums), along with an array of prominent hard rockers. According to RollingStone.com, " 'Mouth for War' — with HATEBREED's Jamey Jasta on vocals and SLAYER's Kerry King on guitar — kicked off the tribute set. 'A New Level' followed, with Max Cavalera and King Diamond sharing vocals and King and ANTHRAX's Scott Ian tag-teaming on guitar. An acoustic cover of PINK FLOYD's 'Wish You Were Here' headed by Jerry Cantrell [and featuring METALLICA's Lars Ulrich on drums], served as a palate cleanser, before METALLICA's Kirk Hammett and HELLYEAH/ MUDVAYNE singer Chad Gray came out for 'Fucking Hostile'." (Note: This contradicts a posting on METALLICA's MetOnTour.com web site which claims that Kirk didn't take part in the tribute because "but they ran out of time." Various fan accounts also indicate that Hammett did not take part in the jam.) Fan-filmed video footage of the Dimebag tribute can be viewed below. Photo of Lars Ulrich of METALLICA performing PINK FLOYD's "Wish You Were Here" alongside Jerry Cantrell ( ALICE IN CHAINS), Mike Inez ( ALICE IN CHAINS), Scott Ian ( ANTHRAX) and Pearl Aday ( Ian's fiancée and daughter of legendary crooner Meat Loaf): (photo displayed from MetOnTour.com)

however, i will say that her giving hellyeah and hour slot on the mainstage was a gift enough to Dime, considering that his brother's new band sucks to no end.

I thought Jerry's vocals were just spot on. I'd love to hear him sing more Pink Floyd songs.
Am i alone on this thought?.... : Vinnie is going to ride out Dime's death for all it's worth ($$$$$).
If Vinnie wants to do the right thing, he'll make up with his former band mates. (just my opinion)

i'm not saying hellyeah are the worst band out there, but answer me this:
if ozzfest is all about displaying the best metal bands, particularly now that it's a one-off show, then how were hellyeah invited and not down? are you seriously gonna tell me that hellyeah are better than down? don't lie....
c'mon, phil got snubbed, as he continues to be, b/c everybody wants to kiss vinnie's ass and feed his ego out of sympathy. i'm a huge pantera fan, but c'mon, let's call it for what it is...
not only that, but a dimebag tribute would have been a WHOLE WHOLE lot better with phil involved, but lord knows that mr lord of dallas Vinnie would not have allowed that, which is fine, but it screws the fans.

i just want to thank you for showing that there's still a few people out there with a brain that conveys rational thoughts.
in addition to what you said, vinnie and rita's shit talking hasn't stopped since dime's death. meanwhile phil has said nothing disparaging; in fact, he said on Behind the Music that he "needed vinnie paul real bad" and in response to vinnie's anger he said "will it change anything or will you simply lose another brother?"
phil may have fucked up in the past for sure, but i'm sorry to say that he is now far more mature, and displaying much more musical talent and dedication, than mr paul.

Randy Rhoades mentioned at a Dimebag tribute is totally relevant and cannot be compared to Yngwie at a Cobain tribute. Randy was one of Dime's idols and influenced him and countless other players. What Randy did for his time was awesome. I also don't think Dime's leads are necessarily more challenging and Randy was doing his thing in the mid 70's. He is entirely relevant to Dime and many other players out there. Not to mention, it's not about who is more challenging to play. If that were the case, then I'd only be listening to shredders and Yngwie and his countless clones. I learned to shred BEFORE I learned to really, play. In fact, I'd be fine if I didn't have to listen to another one of these shredder, relativity egomaniacs again. They're songs are so limited. It's all aboutthe lead part where the diatonics and harmonic minros and modals are being run up and down like a fucking robot!
I do agree that Phil should be forgiven already. This grudge shit is childish and uncalled for. I truly believe that it just kills Phil every damn day!

I guess Rolling Stone didn't actually have anyone at the show. Kirk did NOT get to play a song, Kerry King only played on "Hostile," and Jasta was backed up only by Hellyeah for "Mouth for War." Some old white-haired dude playing a left-handed Randy Rhodes Jackson V played with Ian on "A New Level." As cool as it was to be there, I was a bit disappointed in how disjointed the whole tribute thing felt - it did take at least 10 minutes to get the acoustics set up for "Wish You Were Here." And after Hostile, the whole thing was just over. I was also surprised that Wylde was not involved. Whatever, it was a cool fucking show nonetheless. And the new Metallica will kick ass - all the haters can get over themselves...

It's like the kids who come on here and say that someone is jealous because they don't like a popular band. The same defense every time. "Well my band sells more than your band so you're just jealous."
The same thing goes with the shredding, egotistical mentality - even though shredding is less challenging then spilling your guts out with far less notes. I never used to understand that but now I do. It's like, now I won't buy a Floyd, Tool, or RUSH album - 3 amazing bands, because they're guitarists don't shred?? I'd rather hear those bands over Chris Impelliteri or Malmsteen anyday.
Dime and Randy had it all though. They were diverse and capable of doing many different things on the instrument. Shredding or playing fast was done when called for. It is so obvious when someone is trying too hard to play fast. Moderation is always key.

Yea, the thing with Chad Gray doesn't really bother me. What bothers me more is that he is playing with Hellyeah who really don't appeal to me. I do, however, like Mudvayne. If he's dressing like a cowboy which is something he ain't, then I guess that means he's selling out somewhat. Doesn't take away from those good Mudvayne albums though. Hellyeah just doesn't really appeal to me from what I've heard and the band name is kind of silly and corny.

the other good thing is that it was only permitted to a moronic city like dallas (which i now live in, unfortunately).

It's not so much about how influential darrell was (which he was) but about how many friends and loved ones he had. Musicans can be as influential as ever but that doesn't mean they had the type of bond that Darrell had with these musicians here. These guys really loved him. He was a great friend and therefore gets much recognition for it. Funerals tend to be larger when someone had many friends and loved ones. Darrell had it all and, much less importantly, was influential; however, once again, that is irrelevant and not important. These people are celebrating the life of a great, great friend. I don't like people for who they influence. That means shit to me. Apparently it does to most others too.

By the way, I completely agree with what you said to the non-appreciating Randy guy. You can play for 50 years and still not get it. That is entirely possible. A pparently, this guy doesn't get it. To downplay a great, great player and person (RIP) like he did just shows a lot about someone who is not only ignorant but also flat out disrespectful. Because his playing was average to this guy, that gives him the right to assume that Randy is just a mullet wearing (which WAS in style then BIG TIME!) jerk??
Randy was a great dude and also a teacher, aside from influencing countless players such as DIME!

Riffs
Randy: original riffs, derived from some of the trad metal classicists at the time, mixed in with a classical influence as well as a bit of the raunchy glam rock influence he had (like Mick Ronson).
Dime: Thrash metallica riffs, Priest style riffs (at least with first two with Phil) meets Exhorder groove riffs (undeniable, not starting shit again).
Randy: Solos derived from above mentioned, very structured and orchestrated. Also has an EVH influence which was controversial at the time (people said he copied EVH's tapping sometimes, but Lynch and others and Randy were doing it too).
Dime: a matchup of EVH and Randy Rhoads-isms, with less classical influence
Tone.
Randy: Marshall Super Leads, but with kind of a thin tone in studio, great live though (example: Tribute.
Dime: Randall Solid States, scooped mids tone, heavy but lacking dynamics at times. Who wins?? Neither, both were unique, but considering the album "Slaughter in the Vatican" was released 89/90 and Cowboys was 90 I still think that Phil and co were listening a lot to Exhorder to get THAT sound, and Rhoads was unique but there was also guys like Uli, early Yngwie, etc who were no slouches on the neo-classical front.
So in essence what I am saying is that from a mainstream standpoint both guitarists have the influence on multitudes of players, its just that I do think that sometimes they get a lot of accolades where maybe some more are due to more underground or semi underground players like Chuck Schuldiner. Schuldiner did have some problems with other bands sometimes, maybe more than the laid back Dime, so maybe that had something to do with it (the praise) but then again i think it is a matter of record sales and that Pantera had such a mainstream presence (people who say "i like some metal, like Pantera" are a dime a dozen (pun unintended) and you don't get people saying "i dont know much about metal, but I love that guy Zarach 'Baal' Tharagh"...Conclusion: Dime and Randy were GREAT for mainstream guys who are well known, but overrated when one does additional delvings into the underground..Still, their influence, however controversial, is felt..But I sure wish they'd replace at least 1 third the features on them in guitar magazines with features on our sadly departed Chuck Schuldiner, who pioneered at least two different types of metal..

Sorry, but this whole bit came off as some cash grab bullshit. I take it that Yoko Rita and Vinnie still lack the fucking ability and move the fuck on and not blame Phil for Dimes death? What the fuck, it's downright shameful that they use him as a crutch and constantly pushing these lame ass tributes, instead of being like Rex and Phil and making some new music with some soul and groove to it. At least Zakk Wylde backed off of the R.I.P. Dime shit and didn't embarrass himself with that awful "In this River" song.

The spirit of Dime is giant, and would want reconciliation. I dont think Vinnie is cashing in on Dime. He is an icon unto himself due to his great drumming. But it's time for forgiveness. A tribute without Phil is almost meaningless. I say almost because all who participated did so with love. And it sounded great.

another "tribute", the guys from Pantera pay homage to their fallen bro with an assortment of their rockstar friends, I agree these things are designed to rub salt in Phil Anselmos wounds, fuck them, petty minded fools

...phil attending ozzfest?
seriously, vinnie and rita would piss and moan, and the city of Dallas would kiss their ass like always, because behind them there's only Drowning Pool left for Dallas metal, and well, nobody cares. and like rita did the day of dime's funeral, she would probably would have threatened phil. b/c apparently if phil says something about dime, it's unforgiveable, but her and vinnie can simply say whatever they want. Typical self-righteous Dallas atittude.
of course phil wasn't there. god forbid he walk among us. so let's all drink ourselfves silly with blacktooths and live in the past.

for talking shit about people talking shit about other people talking shit grow up and pay respect to dime. Its a tribute, you dont have to pick it appart and fucking critique it because you dont like vinnie or some other shit. We are all metal heads and we are killing our own music again for what?! just so you can feel justified on a fucking website to a bunch of strangers? we are making our music look like a joke to other people when they see shit like this where we are attacking eachother. Everyperson involved with this tribute had balls to be doing this shit cause i for one would be scared shitless for trying to cover anything pantera. They are and always will be gods. Bottom line...Vinnie is not cashing in on his flesh and bloods death, Randy was a killer guitarist also, down sucks, and DIME lives on forever!!!!! DIME IS GOD!!!!!!!

One of the things that I love about the world of metal is the fact that there is no drama and shit talking..i am saddened by the comments you dumb asses have left. If you are a true pantera fan you will resect both aspects of the situation..besides none of us were really there and its really not our business. If you want to see Down, get your happy ass in the car and go see em...it didnt stop me. Why does it have to be a two sided shit talking match..this is sick and sad. You guys are reminding me of a bunch of brittany spears teeney boppers.

is'nt it funny that metal heads hate all other music but most of all hate each other? we are all brothers so to speak in a dying breed and we need to keep it alive the fucking best we can
