JUDAS PRIEST's ROB HALFORD: 'We Don't Give A Damn What People Think About Our Music'
- Aug. 11, 2008
|
|
JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford recently spoke to ChartAttack.com about the mixed reactions from both critics and fans to the band's concept LP "Nostradamus", making it one of the most talked-about and controversial albums of the year. "To be honest, we don't give a damn what people think about our music," said Halford. "We just go into writing or recording sessions and give it 1,000 per cent and play it from the heart, and it's left in the lap of the gods for people to make of it what they will. "I think if we worried too much about reactions, we'd be sitting at home twiddling our thumbs. We're really happy with what we made, and that's the main thing for us." "I think all musicians are directed by their own sense of creativity," Halford continued. "If you worried yourself about what people are going to think about what you're doing, I think the world would be a very stale place to live in. "It's all about shaking things up and bringing new ideas forward. Ironically enough, 'Turbo' [ PRIEST's heavily critized 1986 album] is our most successful commercial release in the United States. I don't know what that means, but it must mean something." Read the entire article at ChartAttack.com.

Phil666, gotta point there bud ^
But equally robs right, they made the album for the sake of music, not really the dough. If it was for $$$ then they would have released Painkiller 2,3,4,5 by now

COMMENT | In other words posted by : fugazi2112 8/11/2008 7:50:36 PM We don't care at all about our fans and could care less if they like our music or not. If that's the case Robby why even put the music out for sale just keep it to yourself. Of course you care because you want the $$$
------------------------- thats retarded. believe it or not if you wanna make money you dont make a double concept album. thats hard to sell.
obviously they want to share it and see if people like it. real artists want to share their work, but many do it for their own sake and their own creative expression.
if priest wanted just money they wouldve made a desmond child or diane warren penned ballad. thats the easy way to make money!

Rob Halford says that he doesn't make music for the fans or cares what they think - he's applauded as a hero. James Hetfield says the same thing - he's crucified. What does this prove??????
Wait for it.........
wait for it.........
It proves that the haters are retarded!!!!
METALLICA=BEST BAND IN THE LAND

You make music and art for yourself, it's as simple as that.
Nostradamus is a really good album. Buy it, and listen to it, it's so heavy, and damn, it's epic.
I never thought that I would dig it, but it's good.

"Nostradamus" is just a great fucking album, and I haven't had my fill of it yet. Obviously, anyone who has been in the business as long as Rob would know the concept, and format, would garner instant criticism. So, they did it anyway. Cool. And, a lot of people dig it.
He then tries to equate "Turbo" with that. Of all their albums, "Turbo" is clearly the one that pandered to the general public's taste at the time. Of course, it's what sold the best. I've heard Priest defend that album many times as NOT selling out for sales. I guess they've have probably convinced themselves of that after all this time. But, when you combine those songs with the look (colorful leather, poofy hair, just like Ratt and Poison) it sure seems like someone got them to sell out.
Turbo and Nostradamus are as different as can be in intent as far as I'm concerned. One was for sales, the other was from the heart. I haven't listened to Turbo in 20 years and may never again. Nostradamus, I'm going to go put it on right now.

he must not care, because all true old school priests fans like me that saw them in the 70's realize this album is a piece of crap..just boring and over the top..plus the set list they're playing...WEAK....
just play the 1 st 5 albums, rock a rolla-hell bent and then stop. thats when priest lost me, after hellbent..

I think Nostradamus might be their worst album ever but I am legitimately glad that they play music for themselves and don't get down about fan reaction. If they love the album, that's all that matters.
Even though it's their worst, it's not all bad. Prophecy, Alone, and Visions are all pretty good. And I actually dig some of the between-song interludes.

We see it the same way on the 2 albums. Maybe I'll reconsider my Turbo ban.
Part of the reason Priest has always appealed to me is that they've never really been "popular" or "mainstream". Even Maiden is a much safer popular band to be a fan of. That's why I have no problem with what Rob said here.

Does Halford mean to say that he doesn't give a shit about what fans of Judas Priest have to say? If so, then I suppose he wouldn't care if all the fans were to just illegally download his shit straight off the net while he winds up not getting a dime for the hard work that he and Judas Priest put into the latest album. What a careless comment for him to make.

I'm old enough to know 70's priest and personally Nostradamus is their best album to date. They should continue to make concept albums. This album blew me away. The music is very theatrical, if you want straight forward Hard Rock/Metal this is not for you. It is not mosh pit music. This album is music for the dark.
Music then Money as far as an ARTIST! is concerned.
