SLIPKNOT's ROOT: Working With DAVE FORTMAN 'Helped Me Appreciate RICK RUBIN As A Producer' - Aug. 12, 2008
Christina Fuoco-Karasinski of LiveDaily.com recently conducted an interview with SLIPKNOT guitarist Jim Root. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

LiveDaily.com: You must be pretty pleased, as well, with how the single "Psychosocial" is doing.

Root: That's great, especially because, when we were working on the songs in preproduction, that song, to me, was one of the more linear tunes. After we started building the songs in the studio and layering parts to it, it came together really well. I'm excited that it's doing well. But, to me, it's like a straightforward, late '80s thrash song. When I first heard the demo of that song, it reminded me of a TESTAMENT tune. Just because it's got that boom-tat, boom-tat. You can picture the video, straight-up head banging. Or like MEGADETH off "So Far, So Good", which is cool. That's the kind of music I grew up on.

LiveDaily.com: Tell me about the album title, "All Hope is Gone".

Root: Well, you know, I'm not really involved. This will show you how quickly we were working. By the time the title of the album came together, it was already decided on. I think I found out, like, two days later. The song in itself is one of the songs we put together at the very end of the recording process. Corey's [Taylor, vocals] our lyricist and he's a great lyricist and a great vocalist and he's very metaphorical in his writing. So almost anybody can draw anything out of anything he's talking about. He could be talking about something that's so personal to him, but the way he puts it out there anybody could make it their own, turn it into something very personal to them. To me, "All Hope Is Gone" could have anything to do with the presidential race to the climate to the gas prices. It could be extremely political or personal. The way I look at it, I'm assuming he's coming from a mostly political standpoint. Of course, I haven't read all the lyrics to "All Hope Is Gone".

LiveDaily.com: What was it like to work with [producer] Dave Fortman. Was it better than your last experience with Rick Rubin?

Root: Um, no. Dave Fortman really helped me appreciate Rick Rubin as a producer. Sometimes, hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes it takes another situation to kind of make you look back at a different situation and really see how good you had it, you know? Rick Rubin was able to do things that Dave Fortman could never do. I'm not trying to take anything away from Dave Fortman as a producer. He's extremely talented. He wasn't able to get nine people together on the same page and, to me, that's the most important thing in making a SLIPKNOT record. I guess if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

He also slammed Fortman in the new Guitar World, saying he wasn't a producer, just a good engineer, Root never wanted to make an album this way again, etc, etc.

Not a good way to promote a new record...

...on the other hand, as good as Rubin is, he churned out a mediocre Slipknot album. I'll be the judge of Dave Fortman as a producer and you can just shut up already, masked man.

...he said he thinks psychosocial sounds like an old school thrash tune, dont get me wrong i actually like slipknot(i aint no kid either) but to say that song reminds him of testament and megadeth is just wrong

it's soooo nice to hear an interview that's HONEST and not just the usual "THIS IS THE BEST THING WE'VE EVER DONE AND IT'S GOING TO RULE THE UNIVERSE" type bullshit that most people say... I mean, it actually makes me a lot more curious to hear it to form my own opinion.

Jim's a badass too by the way. Very nice cool guy (or at least when i met him he was)

bigtime in the new gw. in the gw interview he really makes it sound as if the process was a big mess and disjointed. after that interview and the 30 second samples i'm very unsure about this disc. i am a fan and i like all the previous material but, i just can't get excited now like i was a month ago.

i saw them saturday night and in contrast to all the vids posted on this site they actually tore it up. corey actually sang instead of merely sing-talking. not the best performance i've seen them give but not the worst.

speaking of mayhemfest machine fuckin head was by far the best. i've seen them four times and they never disappoint.got their late caught part of the red chord and they were good. the biggest surprise was underoath. i've never delved too deep into their material but they were damn good.they were tight and their frontman was really good. what i thought was funny was the drum riser said pig on it and one couldn't help notice their keyboard/sampler/lead praiser dude who is spot on for philip seymour hofman in boogie nights.

disturbed did what they do with their heavier-than-def leppard-def leppard- sound. i'm not a hater but so many of their songs sound samey. which brings us to the sad fact that mastodon didn't do all that well. i love these guys from the remission album and, i've seen them now five different times. maybe it was a off day. maybe they don't translate well on the big stage. i don't know but these were not the same guys that bested slayer on the unholy alliance tour.

np - slipknot - some feel

I too read the Guitar World interview and now this......and it is refreshing to see someone in a band speak the truth instead of talking up the new CD. The record company is probably not too happy with him, but I think Root is being true. It is also very interesting what Root said when comparing Slipknot and Stone Sour in the Guitar World article.......we'll see where that goes. I personally love both bands! Corey is a brilliant lyricist!

this doesn't bode well for the new record... I know Rubin is a great producer, why (like Metallica said) he's never there. The dude took off during the new Weezer sessions and was never heard from since. Rick Rubin = self produced record... enuff said.

Rubin has a way of getting performances out of artists that no one else seems able to do.

I've not heard an album produced by him that I didn't find interesting. I may not have liked the album, but I could see his finger on the final product.

I'm inclined to give a listen to anything Rubin produces.

I am taking the wait and see attitude on the 'Knot album.

in my opinion have basiclly moved on from Slipknot in there mind. Reading other members interviews over the last few years I think they aren't the only two that feel that way either. I think Slipknot is starting to feel more like a job to some of the members. The fans want it, the record company wants it, some members in the band want it, and in the end they just do it. I think many of them have just outgrown that kind of music. You can hear it in the last album and this one that the extreme side of Slipknot is in the past.

I know its not a popular stance on Blabbermouth but I personally find Stone Sour much more listenable then Slipknot in a whole. Love alot of Slipknot but I also have grown kind of away from alot of it. Stone Sour to me just seems to bring more substance to the table.

Isn't this band big enough to take care of themselves?

Get a good recording engineer, select a studio and go from there.

There's bound to be disagreements between the members. There was always tension between them.

Jim says he prefered working with Rubin in the mansion, while Corey and Joey have said they preferred Fortman. Who cares.
