KORN Frontman DAVIS: 'I Feel Like I'm Waving The Flag For Musicianship' - Aug. 13, 2008
Jonathan Davis recently spoke to Chris Steffen of RollingStone.com about the KORN singer's forthcoming solo record, which Davis says won't just be KORN-style ragers with a different staff. "I always compare it to when Steve Perry went and did 'Oh Sherrie', which is a fucking JOURNEY song," he said. "It sounded exactly like JOURNEY, and that's fucked up. I don't want to do that."

"I feel like I'm waving the flag for musicianship, trying to bring back bands that can play," Davis told RollingStone.com after his main stage set at this weekend's Ozzfest. "It seems like a lot of music today is so churned out and simple. I like playing these festivals, because it's one thing all day, and then here I come on, and everyone's like, 'Whoa,' then back to the grind."

that's a complete overstatement. i'm not gonna korn bash..but all they did was tune real low and chug out riffs, use their patented "U" bars to dive notes and play tritones. innovation at the time, yes...but not musicianship.

musicianship is dragonforce, randy rhoads, marty friendman of others of that caliber.

Off of selling to an adolescent audience that usually doesn't fully grasp and comprehend music in it's entirety at such a young age and he's making a claim only someone along the lines of Bob Dylan, Opeth, etc has the right to say?

Wow, that's this is the best my generation can produce? Soft boy wannabee trash from the gutter whorefuse to educate themselves and would rather bring society down with to their level.

Do I like Korn? they're okay. used to be a big fan in middle school. they have their moments from time to time.

Do I like Jon Davis' voice? it has it's positive qualities. he's not the best but it has certain emotional qualities that you don't see in a lot of other vocalists.

Do I think he'll put out an album that doesn't sound like Korn? if the Queen of the Damned soundtrack was any hint at that, most likely.

When I think of "musicianship", does he or anyone associated with him come to mind? NO!!!

btw, if that video is of one of his new songs, it get's a big MEH from me. haven't really want to pick up anything Korn related in years. this isn't getting me to start anytime soon.

I knew this was going to be hell once I read the title.
First off I will say I am long standing Korm fan, but am the first to admit that they lack talented musicianship.
After that though, the people bashing his statement need to know what the hell they're talking about before they start going off on tangents. The musicians in his solo band are all very talented. He's talking about them, not Korn. It may still be a very bold, in fact too bold, statement for him to be making, especially since there were plenty of talented acts at the Ozzfest. But either way, he is not incorrect in saying the band can actually play.

I agreed completely with ur comment...till u mentioned DragonForce. Besides the fact that their songs all sound the same and they mix mindless, soulless technicality with stupid videiogame sounds, they speed up their own music and can't play it live, so they suck. Randy Rhoads, on the other hand, is the best guitarist I've ever heard and the ultimate example of musicianship. John Davis can shove his flag up his ass for all I care his crappy music doesn't represent me or anyone with good musical taste, let alone musicianship.

I do respect Korn, however this statement is complete bullshit. Although a lot of bands are Korn rip-offs, Korn is not a standard anymore. They brought nu metal, but this music style has become old. It is actually agonizing.

Korn was once a standard... several years ago.

Here to Stay is the last good song they released. Nevertheless, they could have called it quits after Follow the Leader.

We are just sitting here judging shit, not trying to create. I love how people who aint done shit are so quick to judge those who actually made a living off of it! And were able to reach the heightys. Especially trying to create 'dark' music after being multi-millionares. Not an easy task. But of course, everyone talks their shit..

Give the guy a break. Korn's first disc is STILL one of the best heavy records ever made. Period. The angst is undeniable. Ya, they made some shit at the end, but fuck, people are so short minded. Korn were the ONLY heavy band selling CD's at the time.

All should listen, with interest.

I have surfed blabbermouth for years and never felt the need to make an account to comment. This claim was so ridiculous and out of line a I made an account just to rant so here goes:

I SERIOUSLY laughed out loud after reading this! I saw Mr. Davis at Ozzfest last weekend and I was embarrassed for him. The band was by far the MOST amateur on the bill and that means a WHOLE lot considering the 3rd stage was mostly just local talent. I CANNOT believe he said this!!!! I have seen Korn live a number of times (because they were at shows that other bands I wanted to see were on) and he sounds like shit every time. I think David is a good drummer and while Fieldy is pretty annoying personally he is a good bassist. IT ENDS THERE. Munky and Head were just two OKAY guitarist (playing 2 different things on 2 different guitars that are both simple as shit is not impressive!) and as you already know I think Jonathon is a joke. It seriously pisses me off that he is famous and other EXTREMELY talented people I know are not! His voice has sucked forever and only sounds half decent on Korn cds because of studio wizardry. I know some people are gonna deny this but have you ever listened to Queen of the Damned? How come everyone on there sorta sounds like Davis? THE REASON FOR THAT IS that he just took out his vocals and then put the other artist in but kept the same standard J.D. effects he has been using for years. Oh man, I really can't say enough bad things about this ass clown. Sure, I give Korn the fact that they pioneered a new sound and had a lot of people copy them but it ends there. The lame part about that is that while they were innovative it was negatively. They are the guys that made metal more simple, have less solos, use down tuned guitars/bar cords and later they added rap to it. They are NOT innovative talent wise! They made heavy music regress! FUCK THEM. FUCK HIS SOLO SHIT EVEN MORE!!! ALSO, FUCK ANYONE WHO DOES NOT AGREE. I bet those are the same assholes saying Dimebag didn't do much for metal! HAHAHAHAHA He thinks he is cool! I do standup and I might just mention this at one of my shows! I sure if anyone who can remember who he is (since Korn is not washed up) will laugh there ass off! DIE! -L

P.S. I made my user name my REAL name so that hopefully he might read this and finally get the truth!

Mr Davis here is something to consider:
When you have nothing but "yes men" sitting around circle jerking and nodding their heads in approval to your new musicial stylings its easy to start believing your own bullshit.

KORN has been irrelevant since the first record and has a handful of songs since worthy of a halfhearted thumbs-up.

Please reserve these types of comments for those that have the body of work to back it up.

I wouldn't say Korn was or is irrelevant. That's impossible to say. Whether you like 'em or not, if there is one thing they are not, it's irrelevant. They are relevant to many, many people, whether they suck or not.

I don't mind Korn personally but I also like all sorts of the "Cool" stuff to listen to also. Technical DM is cool but after a while it's all the same shit. Whether something is technical or simplistic is irrelevant. In fact, some of the best rock music AND rock music in general, is simplisitc. It's all about the feeling! NOT how fast you play a damn scale! Who cares? I learned that shit when I was 13 Yrs old! I learned to express myself emotionally and put feeling into my playing also. THAT is what music is. This is an art, not gymnastics!

It's truly amazing just how many ignorant morons are on this site who can't read. Any time someone makes a statement you all blow it way out of proportion, take it out of context, and twist it around.

First of all Korn's music IS innovative and different. It doesn't have to be technical to be great. Their music is not even remotely marketed toward one specific demographic (teens) and I'm sick to fucking death of the same CONSTANT generalizations and exaggerations when it comes to their music. Stick to talking about bands you actually know about. Got it?

"No i dont got it and i never will either!"

That's for damn sure. It never fails--any time a Korn hater is called out and told to back up their bullshit insults with factual evidence, they resort to name calling or they avoid the subject at hand. What I said is absolutely true: all you people know how to do is lie, exaggerate, and generalize. Many times in real life I have said to these moronic kind of people "so tell me about this song or that song" and they NEVER can. Like I said, until you know what you're talking about, shut the fuck up and focus on what you actually know about because you are fooling no one.
