RUSH To Part Ways With ATLANTIC RECORDS? - Aug. 14, 2008
According to a posting on the unofficial RUSH site RushIsABand.com, the legendary Canadian rock trio is negotiating a new record deal with Rounder Records to take effect following the completion of the band's longtime relationship with Atlantic Records.

RUSH has been with Atlantic Records since 1989's "Presto" and has released a total of seven studio and four live albums under this label. The group's final release for Atlantic will apparently be a greatest-hits record covering the band's 20-year history with the company. It will be titled "Rush: 1989-2009" and will include some previously unreleased live Atlantic tracks in addition to several studio hits from the last 20 years.

Rounder is said to be one of the biggest independent record labels in the United States with a roster of artists that includes BRUCE COCKBURN, GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYERS, ALISON KRAUSS, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS and THE TRAGICALLY HIP.

RUSH's most recent concert leg wrapped July 24 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The group has been out behind its 18th studio album, "Snakes & Arrows", which marked RUSH's first set of all-new material since 2002's "Vapor Trails".

RUSH's songs "Closer to the Heart" and "Working Man" were recently made available for the Rock Band video game.

RUSH will receive a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame next year.

Rush will probably sign deal to release it new cd exclusively through walmart.

At that point I will begin to loose faith in rock n roll.

This cannot be true. I dont believe one word of it.
No record company would let an artist go with a final obligation of a Greatest Hits album.
Not sure about rounder as they have had dealings with them before...so, on that note it wouldnt be suprisng.
I dont know...just seems fishy

A band as legendary as Rush going with an obscure indie label like Rounder??

As for another "greatest hits" package, I hope they sell the unreleased songs individually on iTunes, so I don't have to buy the whole thing.

rush has always been about the music and making great misic at that.doesn't matter who puts it out as long as it's out there. and yes that means if it's at walmart I will buy there to.it's not my fault record companies and stores want to gouge me. there is no reason for a cd to cost as much as they charge. they cost as much today as when they first came out 20 years ago. so I don't feel guilty for burning a cd or downloading and I sure as hell don't feel bad for only paying ten bucks at wal-mart! Rush rules by the way although I am sure tin ear doesn't like them because they are so successful which must mean they are sell outs. to bad they own any band he likes!

I could see this happening. The reality is that Rush has a fanbase that is already established and not really growing. Atlantic didn't exactly spend a ton of money promoting them, so what difference does it make? They are going to sell x number of albums to x number of fans, and then sales are going to drop. As to new fans, as long as their catalog is on Itunes, the band will be fine.

who slags the record compainies and don't really know shit. It's not any different than anywhere in the business world. Prior to starting my own business, I worked for a Fortune 50 (yes fifty) company for almost a decade. The last full year I worked for this company, I easily generated profits for this company that were in excess of what Chris Daughtry has pulled in on his debut to date. I've closed single deals larger than what Saints of Los Angeles has made (I am talking profits). And with all that money i generated, I only made 50 grand. That is just how it is when you work for a company. The only way you can get ahead in this country is to kiss ass, suck dick or go work for yourself. I'm tired of all these whiny assed musicians who cry about being stolen from all day, when they actually have it better than most of us.

The reason people are receptive to the musicians whining is that Record Labels are not responding to market forces. CD's are increasing in price, despite decreasing in sales. People are finding other ways to get what they want, but they're being told they are ripping off the artists. The response to pirated video games isn't to launch a campaign telling users how they're hurting the poor video game designers (who get way more screwed).

Rush has released Rush In Rio the DVD on Rounder already, Neil Peart released his Anatomy of a Drum Solo DVD on Rounder, Peart has released his books through Rounder, and his wife has released her book through the company as well.

Looks like Rush is going full circle with this and it is about time. The band has a cult following that buys between 250-300k copies of their new records since 1998 and they haven't gotten past that figure and probably never will unless they do a record with guest artists and duets.

It's time for Rush to close out their recording career on their own terms. They will probably ink a 2 record deal and does 2 more tours and they will be 60 by that time. I don't see them wanting to play into their late 60s as a band and touring that much. If they have the itch to still make music this would give them a good outlet with little responsibility to a major label. Go in...record some songs...sell 250-300k copies...let it soak up out there...go in again...record some more music...release another...do a tour...the days of album tour album tour have to eventually come to an end.

As much as I love Rush and seeing them live I would rather get more new original material from them. They lost a lot of crucial time being away from 97-2002. A few studio records of new material minus the tours could make up for it and they could be in better condition when it did come time for a major tour and more people would see it.

If RUSH is going to sign a record deal with Rounder it only means that there will be more RUSH music forthcoming. I don't care who releases there music. As long as they release music and continue to tour. In this day and age, it doesn't matter who releases music. As long as it's being made and made like RUSH knows how to make music. Sometimes one never knows if a band will continue. A few years ago it seemed unlikely that RUSH was going to continue especially after Mr. Peart's unfortunateness with his family. It looked like the towel was tossed, game over man. But Thank the heavens they have continued. Having a new record deal only helps that they will release more and more music. I know it won't last forever but who wants to think about that day when the R word comes forth and the final note of RUSH's career is played.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!

But again, it isnt usual that a band issues a Greatest Hits. Usually, they are issued by the record company. Why would Rush or even Atlantic take this as a final deal to there contract.
Again, very fishy

The remaster was done years ago but it has not been released due to the amount of original pressing on the shelves. Hopefully Atlantic will still be able to release this.

Actually, now that I think of it, it may actually help it's release since it's something in the can with the Rush name on it that Atlantic can make money off of in the future.

Either way... Put that shit out ;)

hopefully the unreleased live tracks will be from the different stages sessions, but they will probably be the 4 different songs from the 2008 tour.

btw they NEED to add the live version of force ten from differnt stages that is only on the japanese inport.

also tom sawyer, ctth etc...can very well be on the hits album as they can use live versions of them from the albums atlantic released.

Why do some bands get a free pass on the whole falling off thing? Read any Metallica post and you'll read tons of posts about how Metallica has been dead since A)Cliff Died B)After Justice C)After Black D)Since they ran out of Mustaine riffs. Rush fell off severely after Signals (of course some--or most--would argue after Moving Pictures, but I really like Signals) but nobody makes this point on Blabbermouth.
Listen. I like Rush, and I think that 2112, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, even Farewell To Kings are classic records. Sure they've had a couple solid tracks on most of their later releases, but there's no denying that after 81 or 82, they didn't maintain the same level of quality.
And that's fine. That's what happens to most bands--Ten years of good stuff, then a dropoff. But Metallica (and many other bands too, but I'm writing on Blabbermouth, after all) gets slammed all the time for falling off. But that's a pretty normal development.

Also, to ScorpionRadio, greatest hits packages are a very common way for bands who want off a label to close out their contracts.

Getting some rappers on Roll The Bones is a hilarious idea. I still remember the first time I heard the song, and when they got to the "rap" part, I tried everything I could to not cringe at it. I remember them doing a promo interview at the time, and even then they seemed to realize how lame it was.

Being Canadian, I know Rush has always been on the "Anthem" label and remain so in Canada to this day. That said, I live in a border city, I "trip down to Michigan's Traverse City to ick up the "Remasters".

How will this impact the distribution of the "Remastered" CDs'?

P.S. Have you all checked out the ancient Max Webster/RUSH collaboration song??

Wikipedia info:

The band was respected by fellow Canadian musicians Rush. In a 1979 interview Geddy Lee commented that he enjoyed their music and Rush toured with them frequently. The song "Battle Scar" was recorded live with all three members of Rush on the Universal Juveniles album. "Battle Scar" was written by Pye Dubois and Kim Mitchell. Pye Dubois was co-author to a handful of Rush songs, such as Tom Sawyer.

Great song..check it out!!

The reason there was no output is because of a personal crisis experienced by Neil.
This band is amazing live and snakes and arrows is a solid effort.
I have had the pleasure of over 50 concerts and they are top three....buy a ticket and be prepare to have your lights blown.

One other point

We always bitch on blabs about bands that never release new stuff so lets show support for more RUSH output. Canada's only good band.

is one of the darkest Rush albums. Vapor Trails has been remastered? Its a '02 release and I think the original it sounds pretty good. I've always wondered if Rush has any unreleased mayerial/b-sides/outtakes. I was kind of disappointed when they remastered/reissued the Rush catalohue that they didnt include any bonus tracks. Are they any unreleased rush tracks that never made the albums? If so i wish they do something with that material instead of just release best-of CDs over and over
