METALLICA's New Single To Be Posted Online Tomorrow
- Aug. 20, 2008
|
|
METALLICA's new single, "The Day That Never Comes", will be available for streaming on the band's official web site, Metallica.com, tomorrow (Thursday, August 21) beginning at 11:00 a.m. PST / 2:00 p.m. EST. A five-minute video clip containing behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot for "The Day That Never Comes", which took place last month in Acton, California (about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles), can be viewed below. METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield told MTV.com that the clip won't be making any lofty political statements about the war in Iraq. Instead, it's a statement on humanity, helmed by acclaimed Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, who, along with Lars von Trier, co-founded the Dogme 95 movement in filmmaking. Hetfield said that when he was writing the song's lyrics, he never envisioned the video would look anything like this. "That's the beauty, I think, of writing vague but powerful lyrics — that someone like a movie director can interpret it in his own way and obviously, someone creative is able to take the metaphors and apply them to whatever he needs in his own life," the frontman explained to MTV.com. "The main [theme of the video] is the human element of forgiveness and someone doing you wrong, you feeling resentment and you being able to see through that in the next situation that might be similar and not take your rage or resentment out on the next person and basically keep spreading the disease of that through life." He added, "The one thing that I wasn't keen on here was Metallica plugging into a modern war or a current event [that] might be construed as some sort of political statement on our part. There are so many celebrities that soapbox their opinions, and people believe it's more valid because they're popular. For us, people are people — you should all have your own opinion. We are hopefully putting the human element in what is an unfortunate part of life. There are people over there dealing with situations like this, and we're showing the human part of being there. "It's the forgiveness part — that is key," he continued. " METALLICA has never plugged into any current event visually, but this one is kind of a hotbed. People have very high opinions about this war, and we're trying to cut through all of that. The politics and the religion tend to separate people, and what we're trying to do is bring it together with the common thread of resentment and forgiveness." METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", is scheduled for release on September 12. METALLICA debuted a new song called "Cyanide" during its headlining set on August 9 at Ozzfest, which took place at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. This marked the first time that the band has performed any material in concert from "Death Magnetic". The rest of METALLICA's 17-song Ozzfest set featured a number of the band's classic tunes as well as a medley of songs from underground metal act MERCYFUL FATE, for which they were joined onstage by that Danish act's singer, King Diamond.

excited. this is it...the moment of truth. after all the comments they made about load, reload, and st. anger and about how it's bob rock's fault that those albums sucked...they've got no excuse this time.
i am a bit anti-metallica, but i do love their music through the black album. i genuinely hope this is good.

The next song has a working title of 'Flamingo' and is going to be the first single. Now, Metallica’s lead singles have been breathtakingly crap since 1995, so it was a relief to hear that 'Flamingo' (as it almost definitely will not be called) is a modernised take on their amazing 1988 song One, all balladry at its front end before a speeded-up metalstorm at the back. Hetfield delivers a clean-picked intro which reminded me of the Beach Boys (I know| but I only got to hear it once, all right?) before the body of the song, which is basically like 'The Unforgiven' from 1991’s ’Black Album’. If you’re familiar with the chord progression behind the solo in 'Am I Evil?', the ancient Diamond Head song which Metallica made their own, you’ll be able to picture the under-solo riffage in this song " all simple, effective major-interval jumps.

I will listen and judge it fairly, unlike the fanboys who love it already. But I am not expecting much after hearing Cyanide. Lars sucks. Less wah from Kirk would be great too. Maybe even bring back the pissed off vocal stylings of the 1st 4 albums too?

"Speaking of riffs, Death Magnetic has more of them per square minute than any album in recent memory. It is difficult to make proper sense or judgment about an album almost 80 minutes in length, and which has only been heard once. But even on a first listen, parts of Death Magnetic are astounding, exciting , creative and original. The guitar partnering of Hetfield and Hammett on (notably) Broken, Beat and Scarred and first single The Day That Never Comes is outrageous; the speed of opening track That Was Just Your Life and closing song My Apocalypse proves again just how devastating Metallica are when they excersice the option of assault and battery. Elsewhere, The Unforgiven III and the instrumental Suicide & Redemption - the former beginning like a ballet score, the latter feeding and growling with a terrible menace - display to dizzying effect the dexterity and talent this band has at its disposable"

How many 16 year olds are going to make comments about Metallica dying in '86, or '91? Okay, here goes a short list...
Slayer died when Diablos in musica was born? They had one good song on that whole album, and decided to play wimpy scaled bass lines in a oldish remake of eight Misfit songs. G.H.U.A was respectable, but Christ Illusion was a complete stock album, nothing cool at all. Oh, Kerry King on a SUM 41 video? Yea baby! Thats Metal!
Megadeth? Cryptic Writings? Hey, didn't that arrive around the same time as Load? One good song on the whole album, with the rest of the songs seemed as they sent in a spy to Metallica's "Load" recordings to steals most of the material they were using. No, I didn't mention "Crush'em" Goldbergs old theme song for WCW because that was the biggest disgrace in metal history. "Mama Said" kicked "Crush'em" in the back of its ass, and thats very disturbing...
Judas Priest wimped out for a while, until finally they got Rob back.
So did Iron Maiden, X-Factor anyone? X= Sucked monkey balls.
Ozzy doing that ballad with Linda Ford? Totally not a metal moment. Might as well been The Go Go's, or Wilson Phillips.
The point is all of our metal heroes have had a bad run now, and then. They get older, they change. I love Slayer, and still believe that "Raining Blood" was probably the greatest thrash metal album of all time. Is it better than Master of Puppets? Not really, because there not the same style. Ever band has a different style, thats why there are so many metal bands in the world, and almost all sound different. Metallica thought that the "Load-era" was something they had to do, and they did it. The music they played on those albums weren't an all out assault of neck breaking riffs, but the music was intelligent, and I can respect the musical side.
Now can Slayer play the style of "Raining Blood"? Can Megadeth throw down a "Rust In Peace" style album? Could Amon Amarth crash "Thor Arise" back to us twenty years from now? Its all possible. Don't say a band is quit dead when as far as you know, they may never have even yet to start.

That shit was so whack. But the video is flat out hilarious. When Ozzy first sings his verse in the video and has his eyes closed and looks up all dramatically. I still almost shit with laughter. That shit didn't even work when I was like 10 and it came out. Mulletheaded malldweller music.

never addressed this thread. I can give 100 fucks whether or not somebody likes or bashes a band. It's their time and hey, it's a free forum. Provided you "agree not to post any abusive, obscene, defamatory, racist, homophobic or threatening material, or anything that may violate any applicable laws."...which is fine. All I know is Metallica was instrumental(look a pun) in my musical development and I'll always have a place for them. Like most I have been somewhat disappointed in the last several years as a whole. While there were some good cuts, overall the load-st.anger stuff left me feeling pretty empty. I'll check out the new record. Maybe I'll like it and maybe I won't. But I figure I owe it to myself, as integral a band as they've been, to at least hear it. It makes no difference to me what other fans think. Just so you know I dig Metallica...and if you hate them You are NOT my enemy. It's fine. Varied opinions and tastes make for a more interesting world.
If everyone liked Metallica would anyone really like them?

If you don't care then stop coming into the Metallica threads and posting! Nevermind the fact that you're a broken record at the keyboard and you say the same exact thing in almost every single thread. Just realize that when you make predictions in regards to the sales of this record you just make yourself out to have an even lower I.Q. than you actually do.

If you took the effort to post a comment here (and every other Metallica related story) you are a fan of the band. It's just that some fans are bitter and grumpy and like to pretend they hate the band they really love.
If you people bashing Metallica REALLY didn't like them you simply wouldn't be commenting in here. You did post because you do care and you are all secretly knowing that this album will be the best metal album for a long, long time.

No shit sherlock. Metallica blows donkies right now. Metallica was every metalheads favorite band until metallica sold out to college jocks when they made the black album on up.
Every true metallica fan wants metallica to make another perfect thrash album like And Justice for All again......we REALLY pray to the gods that it will happen.....the last 18 years has been truely pathetic.
We post cause we care, cause metallica used to be good. Why do they suck so bad right now?

yeah but metallica could win a guiness world record for longest stint of putting out bullshit.
One or two albums, I can deal with, 18 years is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to be pathetic.
I hope this new album rocks....out of the 10 clips I have heard, 8 of them sound like load. Sad but true.
