SLIPKNOT Frontman Rejects Blame In Sword Slaying

SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor has spoken exclusively to Blender magazine regarding reports that the schoolboy who stabbed a fellow student to death with a sword in South Africa Monday morning (August 18) wore a mask that resembled the one worn by Taylor. Eighteen-year-old Morné Harmse slashed the neck of 16-year-old Jacques Pretorius at the Nic Diederichs technical high school in the town of Krugersdorp, with students who witnessed the fatal attack saying that Harmse looked and acted like he was "possessed by the devil." Pretorius died at the scene. Harmse also stabbed two gardeners, and authorities discovered three more swords and four other masks in his school bag. The additional masks reportedly were patterned after those worn by SLIPKNOT drummer Joey Jordison, percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan and DJ Sid Wilson. Local community leader Pierre Eksteen put the blame on music, saying, "He came here camouflaged as the guy from SLIPKNOT. We know the wrong kind of music and drugs have bad effects. Young people need to be informed of the effects of bad Satanic music." But the head of the South African police's investigative psychology unit, Gerard Labuschagne, responded, "Whenever there is a murder, people jump to conclusions, and always God or Satan told the killers to do it. These notions shouldn't be taken seriously because it is straightforward: someone, of their own free will, can kill another person." Taylor told Blender: "Obviously, I'm disturbed by the fact that people were hurt and someone died. As far as my responsibility for that goes, it stops there, because I know our message is actually very positive." He continued,"You have something like this happen, it could have been Marilyn Manson, it could have been any number of people who make art that is startling visually, on the darker side. It could've been Pat Boone, for Christ's sake. At the end of the day, there are always going to be mental disorders and people who cause violence for no other reason than the fact that they're fucked up and lost. Anyone who believes that its the fault of a music artist for their psycho kid killing another kid is an idiot. Wait, did the music kill the innocent kid? Who was the one in control of the situation? Its neither the parent's full fault and definately not the fault of the artist. If anyones smart enough to realize that it Literally lies in the hand of the murderer I give props to them. Obviously this kid had some fucked up shit going on in his head, who cares if he listened to Slipknot and wore their masks- he was stupid enough to think that they'd actually be impressed? I've never really liked Slipknot except for odd songs, but all hope is gone is pretty good, although Crahan over exaggerated the album. Can't wait for the tour in December.

I would like to defend Corey Taylor & Slipknot against critics who want to say that their music played a big part in the unfortunate incident that took place. There has been countless incidents of teenagers shooting classmates etc and acts like Marilyn Manson, Slayer & Judas Priest was drawn into the fray.
Music is not the cause of this incident - if they profile the young man who did the killing they will find that he has some other issues that drove him to the act. If you are bullied, teased, made fun , called silly names then you will at some stage or the other react , and sadly as in this case without clearly thinking about the consequences.
In South Africa many people sing a lullaby called Siembamba to their kids - however the words tell you strangle your baby and bash it's head in! Whoa - if Slipknot wrote this or Marilyn manson they would have been crucfied for being murder mongers, satanists etc etc
It is true that some people might look at Slipknot and form a stereo type opinion of - Oh boy, children of Satan. This is not true - Alice Cooper performed in wild make-up and cut off babies heads, pure entertainment ( a liitle twisted, but entertainment nonetheless)
People who like to point fingers must bear in mind that Slipknot looking like Pat Boone clones, or Westlife image riders will not get far in the rough & tumble world of metal.
It is easy to accuse them whilst in fact they were just entertaining people who enjoy their music.
Point is the young man who killed a fellow pupil must accept responsibility for the deed and parents also need to communicate more with their kids, learn to listen what they have to say.
PS : Slipknot - I am looking forward to hearing your new album, I am a 50 year old fan and do not feel any urge to kill - just want to ROCK!!

I am South African. I can state that these kids in these small and backward right-wing towns that are stuck in the bad ways of racism are more influenced by the casual violence of whites bullying blacks, and blacks robbing and killing. Don't lay bame to the music when SA is (factually) THE most violent country outside of a war-zone. The highest murder rate in the world belongs to South Africa. What about the other 50 people a day that are murdered? What about the guys that held my parents up at gunpoint and humiliated them? I'm so glad I got shot of that country and am enjoying my life in the UK. Am quied hacked off that Slipknot cancelled REading, but Metallica should make up for it I suppose.

Dear heyunclecharlie, I think you misunderstand the underlying causality. Taking ssri or adhd drugs does not make you a murderer. We're talking about people with a mental disorder here. Because they have a mental disorder, they take prescription drugs. Because they have a mental disorder, they kill another human being. That's the causality here. Sure, they took drugs and murdered people at the same time, but the one does not cause the other. The underlying cause is mental illness, which explains why they both took drugs and killed people simultaneously. After all, many people take ssri or adhd drugs and only a few of them become mass murderers. Also, there are mass murderers who did not take any medication prior to their deeds. But all mass murderers suffer from some kind of mental illness. The point is, that these people were so messed up that even medication did not prevent them from flipping out and becoming aggressive.
It's more or less the same with heavy metal. Heavy metal music (and the associated underground culture) often appeals to teenagers who do not fit in with the popular, mainstream children. Teenagers with a mental illness generally are loners who do not fit in with the popular, mainstream children. So heavy metal appeals to a lot of teenagers with mental illness. As a result, those teenagers with a mental illness that become mass murderers fairly often listen to heavy metal (and take prescription drugs). But only ignorant people mistake this statistical correlation to imply that listening to heavy metal "causes" teenagers to become mass murderers. The real culprit is mental illness (often exacerated by abuse, neglect or bad parenting).

When "hot" topics like this rear their heads a calm and adult approach is really the ONLY way to usurp the popular myth surrounding metal, that it is 'satanic' and born out of darkness.
As much as i disliked Marilyn Manson, I couldn't help but feel his Arguments in Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine were valid, however they were appallingly presented, much like Corey Taylors have been here. Swearing and (no offence meant here) paddying about such matters does not help the cause.
Music and Film are easy victims here, their representatvies either ignore the problem or combat it in the same way they do their art, Corey Taylor's arguments are valid and objective, whether you hate Slipknot or love Stone Sour more, the real issue here is to confront such matters in an adult and mild mannered way not infighting and ranting. NO ONE WILL LISTEN TO YOUR POINTS!!!!!
Metal will ALWAYS be the victim, no matter what band is attacked - Slipknot couldn't be further away from Satanic metal, yet they use the imagery of pentagrams etc. on their albums and react when such accusations are made - it is for the reason of being 'noticed' that these images are used in the first place.
If we want to be left alone to enjoy our music (those of us who listen to it for the right reasons - not because we want to upset our folks and teachers) then we need to do it less as a public spectacle much like everyone else enjoys theirs. if you want to be noticed then continue to make this kind of noise - Metal, that way will ALWAYS be blamed for the insane acts of the weak willed and the feeble minded.
Let's look at things in perspective, Slipknot and just about EVERY metal band out there make music to get your blood pumping and your adrenaline going - is it any suprise that an already unhinged mind cascades over the edge and goes out on a bloody rampage? No, it isn't Slipknot's fault, it isn't your fault it is the individual's. No other genre of music is more battered by such accusations, but then if they were the fans of that genre would most likely behave in a more adult manner about it.
GROW UP!!! fight the corner in way they can't use against you.
Stop swearing in silly benign ways, state your case and back-up the artists you care about and back off the ones you don't.

new album is much more melodic than previous albums. some songs. it's definitely different. way more actual singing rather than just screaming. best album so far in my mind, although fans who just want the yelling and fast beats may be disappointed.

Totally correct. In fact, if these murderers DID NOT take their meds on those murderous days, they probably would of killed even MORE people!
Slipknot is a good band and they are really heavy. I don't what the problem is here. There was a guy who came on here yesterday telling me that Priest and Maiden (two of my FAVORITE bands) were actually HEAVIER than Slipknot, NOT worse than but heavier. They are better bands than Slipknot but no WAY are they heavier.

people seriously need to look at Slipknots masks before saying anything i saw the one that "resembled" Corey's mask and it looked nothing like it and im pretty sure the other three that "resembled" Joey's Sid's and Shawn's masks didnt look like them at all

Hey Maggots. Fuck these Haters! They got nothing better to do than sit at their computer and talk shit. You can't blame music for peoples actions, thats bullshit. Leave Metal out of this. Slipknot is one of the greatest meal bands to ever fucking live and Corey Taylor is a FUCKING Metal God! Anyone who disagrees can go and fuck themselves! Overall I think this is great publicity for Slipknot ... Right before their new album is released.
