METALLICA Representative Addresses Complaints Over 'The Day' Sound Quality
- Aug. 22, 2008
|
|
A representative for METALLICA's Mission: Metallica web site — the online experience related to the group's forthcoming album, "Death Magnetic" — has sent out an e-mail message to the site's registered members regarding the sound quality of the new METALLICA single, "The Day That Never Comes". According to one METALLICA fan, "there have been reports of loud distortion, as well as clipping in the song. At first it wasn't a big deal until the version being played on radio as well as the one on iTunes had the same problem. I, along with many others, wrote e-mails to Mission: Metallica as they have a history of providing great tech support. Well, they have responded and sent an e-mail to the fans who wrote them." The Mission: Metallica e-mail reads as follows: " METALLICA fans, "My name is Benjamin. I work in fan support for Mission: Metallica. "I am sorry for the bulk e-mail, but we've heard from quite a few of you regarding the sound quality on the single release of 'The Day That Never Comes'. "The source of the problem, as you might imagine, goes all the way back to the creation of the track from master — but this is not how it will sound on the album. "We've identified the source of the problem to prevent it in any subsequent singles released in advance of September 12. "If we can have another one put together and sent out prior to that date, there may be a higher-quality release of 'The Day That Never Comes' made available, but I can't guarantee it at this time." It should be noted that "The Day That Never Comes" is no longer being made available for streaming on METALLICA's official MySpace page, although it's not clear if this is related to the sound-quality issues described above. METALLICA delivered "The Day That Never Comes" on Thursday (August 21) to radio stations nationwide. The song is taken from the band's upcoming album, "Death Magnetic", and clocks in at a hefty seven minutes and 56 seconds. Drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that the rest of the tunes on the CD don't get much shorter than that. "This is not three-, four-minute little ditties. These are, pretty much all of them are, quote, 'epics.' Most of them are seven, eight minutes, I think there's one at six, you know, but it's that type of stuff. When I think of those ( METALLICA) records from the '80s, I think of the songs being journeys that take you to all these different places and different musical landscapes and all that type of stuff, and this is kind of what these songs do." "Death Magnetic" arrives in stores worldwide on September 12 in a variety of digital and physical configurations, ranging from a straight download to a deluxe "coffin box" edition. METALLICA will play two shows in Europe to celebrate the CD's release, both of them with low ticket prices. The group will perform in Berlin on September 12 to open the new O2 arena there, with tickets going for $14. Next the quartet will head to London for a September 15 show at that city's O2 arena, with tickets costing around $9. Both shows are open to fan club members only. Proceeds from both gigs will go to local charities. The band will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January. That obsessed with downloading that they would deliver that lack of quality on purpose? Just watch the pr move with Lars doing an "abrupt apology" and handing out the "new better quality" symbol in a public place with some member of Beatallica in attendance or something! lol

This is not actually new news. IF you all watched the Classics DVD, Back when the black album was finished mastering, they had clipping on two songs, and Bob Rock and Lars raced up to New York and listened to the originals, realized it wasnt on the originals and had it fixed.

We got out of the studio just as our time was running out. We were listening to the mixdowns, and they sounded great... The engineer burned us a few CDs, and when we got them home, we noticed a bunch of clipping and I was pissed. The only difference is we only spent $400 for 20 hours of studio time. Metallica probably spent millions and have been working on this for a long time. I'm sure it will get fixed, but why didn't they realize this before it was posted for millions of listens.
Anyways, I'm still looking forward to the new album. I like both songs so far. I think there is a big difference with them tuning back up to standard guitar tuning. It fits Jame's vocals better. Nothing will bring them to make masterpieces like they put out in the 80's. I remember seeing them in 84, in Scotia, NY. Had no clue who they were, but it changed my life.
I usually don't plug my band on here, but if anyone wants to give a listen to the crap we got out of 20 hours of studio time, it's on myspace ... http://www.myspace.com/vrhb ... the Vicious Rotten Hell Bastards... We don't play death metal, and we are a working class band (meaning we don't practice 80 hours a week), but I like our stuff.

I had noticed the muddled sound, and am quite relieved that the album will sound better. After a few listens, including on Sirius Hard Attack, that song has begun to get into my head. I am more and more confident about the album; not yet at the 50% mark, but it looks like I'm getting there.
Meshuggah44, Metallica has a bunch of epic songs, and Opeth and many others built on what Metallica has done. Opeth is more "sophisticated"; but a direct comparison with the old Metallica would be anachronistic. Look at it this way: at the time it was about as epic as it could get, but now that everybody has done it, you need to up your game to be considered epic. So what Lars is saying in his own nutty way is that it's as epic as what they were doing in the 1980s. That's good enough for me, and it should be good enough for you, too: would you appreciate a Metallica album that was like Opeth? Of course not, because it would not be Metallica.
To all the haters: I have been very sceptical of Metallica for 18 years now. However, I was always sad whenever I was proved right to be highly sceptical. I would have been very happy to be proven wrong, because I love good music and I want people to do good music. You too, the haters, should wish to be proven wrong and actively look for indications that you are wrong. It's much better to give the artist a chance and finally love an album than having one less album to love and being able to say "I told you so".

This is a GOOD THING. remember the Rush Vapor Trails fiasco? And the fact that Californication had clipping all over it. They let those things go as in, letting them be sold in retail. Metallica not letting one song be clipping is actually a good thing.. though my conspiracy thing could hold weight as well..lol!

I was alive when Kill Em' All was released I don't hate metallica, and I am way cooler than you'll ever be. Quit pretending to be what your not and go wash off those tattoos before your mother sees them. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, even if you don't like thier opinion. But I thought it was because I was using Real Player. So there's problems eh? Still the best Metallica I've heard since 86. Listening to it now, and yeah, the sound is unlistenable.
My problem is not the length of thier hair, thier clothes, cars, thier life coaches, or the fact that they hang out Oasis. It's that when they wrote an album in a garage drinking beer, they conquered the fucking world. But now that they're huddled around Pro Tools on a Mac looking at riffs on a screen like in the movie, now they're magically having problems with audio quality.

it still isn't up to par level. Metallica, being the godfathers of thrash metal, should ideally be dominating every newcomer in the genre. This little sampling of the new album is bland, uninspired, and doesn't have a ton of cool stuff in it.
They advertised this album as a return to their roots, but this isn't RTL-worthy or even AJFA-worthy. It's just not. And there's uneasiness in the guitarwork, which makes it seem an amateur effort. Of course Lars hasn't changed -- he still can't match 90% of modern metal drummers.
Death Magnetic's gonna blow.

The song is cool, I love it (although I confess a lil' scepticism about their ability to write metal songs again before I got to hear Cyanide and this one), but I expected a better production. It's just not the clipping and shit like that. It's the mix and mainly, the drum's sound. Obviously, they were trying to run away from something more sophisticated and overprocessed, maybe something that remotely reminded Bob Rock. Maybe it's Rick Rubin's influence. I know Rubin likes the records he produces to sound "organic". Or maybe it's just mastering issues that will be fixed. We'll find out Setp 12.

They advertised it as DEATH MAGNETIC. That's it. The media has reported it as a return to their roots and they have said Rubin told them to put themselves into that head space, but Hetfield has said there is no way to go "back to the old days." You don't rewrite what you have done before. Well, except if you are Slayer. Then you do it over and over and over and over.

But should we keep worshiping the ENIAC computer (first computer ever) as a still-relevant icon because it paved the way for computers to follow? If you can't keep up with the times, you're not great. If you paved the way, you're memorable, but you need to be with the times to be good and ahead of the times to be truly great.
Metallica's an old machine that can't hack it anymore. It's had some upgrades, but it's still running on the same old system. Yeah, they were fucking cool and innovative. WERE.

So, by the standard that you've just laid out for us, would you consider the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus marketing phenomena to be "good" or "great"? She certainly is at least "with the times". But, I'm sure another upgrade will be along soon...just ask Britney.
I think the fact that so many people have such strong feelings about Metallica are a testament to their greatness. Epic music remains so even when the times change, as times always do.
Orion still kills, and not because of its complexity, but for its feeling and above all, >creativity<. Creativity cannot be defined and cannot be explained so easily. If the old stuff no longer sounds epic to you, perhaps the problem is in the eye of the beholder...
Computers are not creative. Comparing music to a computer upgrade is not an effective metaphor. If this were true, then there would be no epic bands, because the most technical "epic" band would be the "greatest"...until the next one comes along.
What you describe is pop music. Pop culture. Trends.
Epics endure, as Metallica's best music has. The musicians of Metallica have strayed from their true form often, and they may even do so again on this album, but at least they deserve credit and respect for what they have done well. They are not computers here to make our lives faster and easier. They are the people who brought some incredible music to this world, and that cannot be duplicated or upgraded upon.

is in some parts of the song the volume of the guitars drop awkwardly down in the mix, this is a thing that can be done perfectly in pro tools with out the awkwardness of noticable slow volume drop in audio when a lead guitar need´s to be a bit up front, i´m amazed that they didnt fix this before sending the record to mastering.

The same thought crossed my mind as well. Give them something crappy to spread around the net, keep people buying shirts and coming to shows (where the real money is) and release all these albums "Remixed and Remastered" when they hang up their spurs in 10 years.
