STONE TEMPLE PILOTS: Tampa Show Cancelled Due To 'Inclement Weather' - Aug. 23, 2008
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS cancelled their performance last night (Friday, August 22) in Tampa, Florida due to "inclement weather." However, according to several online reports from fans who went to the Ford Amphitheatre expecting the band to play, the announcement of the cancellation wasn't made until approximately 10:15 p.m., infuriating the roughly 6,500 STP fans who were none to thrilled to hear this so very late into the evening. One fan wrote BLABBERMOUTH.NET, "The storms they were attempting to lay blame on were in North Florida and were not impacting Central Florida or South Florida where they had played in Hollywood, Florida two days prior. They did cancel a show in Orlando on Tuesday evening which I completely understood and people were informed ahead of time due a tropical storm in the area."

Fan reactions to the cancellation and speculation as to the "real" reason for why the show was called off can be found on the Below Empty and TampaBays10.com web sites.

As previously reported, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer Scott Weiland ranted incoherently between songs, forgot lyrics and fell backward into Eric Kretz's drum kit at one point during the band's show on July 30 at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. According to a review by The Arizona Republic, Weiland came onstage and muttered something about STP and his previous band, VELVET REVOLVER, before the rest of the PILOTS had taken the stage. About a minute and a half into opening number "Big Empty", Weiland walked backward until he fell into the front of the drums.

The rest of the group — Kretz, guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo — started playing several times throughout the set to cut off Weiland's continued comments between songs.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS launched a 65-date reunion tour earlier this spring, but Weiland's performances have been inconsistent throughout the trek so far, with the singer showing up more than an hour late for several shows and displaying erratic behavior onstage.

He was dismissed from VELVET REVOLVER for behavior issues in April and spent a month in rehab shortly before that. Weiland's drug problems derailed STP's career in the '90s but he was supposedly clean and sober from 2003 until his latest stint in rehab.

STP website after 10am this morning indeed blamed "inclement weather" - THAT IS TOTAL BULL S**T.

All the STP stage, sound and light crew made the 4 hour drive from Miami area. The airports did not have any serious delays in either city that would have prevented them from getting here either. Their last gig was Wednesday in Hollywood FL and I knew something was wrong when they started shutting down the beer and concession stands around 9:30 on a Friday night. The venue makes most of their money off vendor sales so why would you stop it early unless you were preparing for potential problems. I did not see people near rioting, but did see some drunk people kicking over garbage cans, but most were laughing and showing off their beer muscles.

SHAME on STP for putting BS lame excuses on their website. The truth shall set you free and people will respect it more (in my opinion). I've seen STP several times and attended hundreds of concerts, but waiting till 10:15 to finally tell people the show is cancelled is crap.

I think there is one main reason for the cancellation and I do not necessarily place direct blame the other members of the band for cancelling. Though I do take issue by taking a junkie on the road before he has cleaned up his act which makes them a little culpable.

Was this all for money or what? I'd like to not think so, but if you have seen his erratic behavior over the past few weeks then pull the plug and cancel the remainder shows until a time in which you can provide a quality show and not a train wreck.

Don't bother trying to make up the gig unless you plan on giving full refunds and putting on a FREE show. Put the bill on Scott Weilands tab.

Folks started walking out around 10pm Eastern then came the announcement that The Stone Temple Pilots would not be performing do to bad weather in Fort Lauderdale.

That is the biggest line of shit I have ever heard. Here is the breakdown.

Tickets- 200.00
Beer- 40.00
Years waiting for the band to reunite
Walking a fucking mile from parking to Venue
Missed the Smashing Pumpkins at the Hard Rock in Orlando to see STP in Tampa instead.
Your opening act made it.
Your equipment made it.
You played Hollywood Fl two nights before which (by car) is about four hours from Tampa.
Scott get the fucking needle out of your arm and get some help!
I love you guys but you fucked your Tampa Fans hard tonight and you did the same to your Orlando fans a few days ago.

Don't blame the weather that is BS.

I drove an hour from Orlando to the show arrived 30mins before doors opened and stood through two bands and at least an hour and a half after the second band for them to pull this s#@t! I saw Dean DeLeo walking around all day!!! When I thought the second were about to get to their last songs I watched Dean hand the guitarist his Gibson Hollow-body and say something to him which I believe was to stall. That f&*king band played for almost and hour and a half! WTF!!! I had to stand through all that B.S. so they could pull this s#%t! Thanks Weiland, Lay off the Smack asshole!

Hurricane Heroin strikes again! Ya know, the thing with us addicts(103 days clean and sober as I type this) is that we have to hit absolute rock bottom before we throw in the towel. Ol' Scottys problem is that he's a millionaire rock star with no consequences. He ruined a great chance with a great band (Velvet Revolver) and it seems like he's back to his old habbits once again.

I signed up on this site just to post this. I was there last night with my brother, and it was definitely a disappointment. I live in the Florida Keys, and I was supposed to go to the STP show in Hollywood, FL on Wednesday, but there were some crap happened and I wasn't able to go. Luckily, my brother got tickets to the Tampa show (which, by the way, the tickets seemed cheaper and easier to get than the Hollywood show), and we drove all the way up. The drive was about six hours. I left school early to rush up here, saw two songs of a crappy band, and waited for almost and hour and a half. I will say that in the Keys, it was raining a lot when we left, and driving up there was constant rain, but that doesn't give STP (Scott) an excuse. If we can drive from farther away and from the same direction, they could have driven up. Something else obviously happened. If they ever play the show again in Tampa, I can't be there. This is a great letdown. There was a Smashing Pumpkins show in Boca that was cancelled this past Tuesday due to the tropical storm, but they came right back and played on Thursday. At least that show was really good. This whole Scott Weiland thing makes me appreciate Billy Corgan so much more.

I was there too. Yes it sucked. Yes the situation was handled poorly. Yes the band bent us all over and gave it to us hard. Am I pissed at the band? Absolutely. Am I pissed at the venue? Even more so. But think about it... They make an anouncement and tell a bunch of drunk, loaded, fired up rock fans that the show will NOT go on. What happens then? They have a fucking riot on their hands that could have very easily gotten completely out of control. #1. They got the money out of there. #2. They boarded up and removed anything that could have been destroyed. #3. They moved in extra security. #4. They made the announcement, accoriding to what I've read; I don't know first hand because I left at around ten. Listen people, the writing was on the wall.... It was getting closer and closer to the venue curfue and the headliner wasn't even on the stage. The place was shutting down and the riot squad was moving in. I think that by NOT making the announcement they prevented a stampeed, possibly an ugly mob scene, and allowed themselves enough time for positioning.
I drove two hours = $50 in gas
Took my two dates to dinner = $250
Bought two shirts = $95
Bought starbucks and water at the venue = $25
Party Favors = $100
TICKETS = $300
Thats $820 for NO SHOW..... And you know what? I'm glad I didn't have to pay a hospital bill on top of that. Or have to bail myself, and/or both of my dates out of jail. Cut your losses and move on folks. We all knew we were going to see a junkie and we all fell victom to a Junkie Stunt last night. C'est la vie. Ol Scottie is shottie!

Alright,

We just went to see the Stone Temple Pilots and the warm up band sucked. We then waited for all the equipment to be switched and after 1 1/2 hours of waiting for the band the people finally told us that the band couldnt make it to Tampa because of the weather conditions in Miami. Alright, so we talk to the people that work there and the band was there but the singer (Dope Head) couldn't make it. The funny thing is we seen the black tour bus take off and an ambulance come in just before they decided to let everyone know the show had been cancelled. So the weather was bad in Miami? The people that we went to the show with just drove all the way over to meet us for the show just a few hours before. Assholes!

P.s. There will be no refunds

Also, its pretty damn bad when one of the most popular topics on your website is "Worst Show Ever" and a link is built by google for the world to see.

I am an 11 year diehard fan of STP/Weiland and after this incident I refuse to make any further plans to see this band live, indefinitely, or spend any more money on them. I cant force myself to stop listening to music I like but damn, this was WAY beyond a simple cancellation. The show in Orlando was cancelled due to the storm, which is understandable. I showed up in Tampa about 5:00 and I was in the front row of the pit, so I have a pretty good eyewitness description. We stood there and watched two mediocre, at best, bands perform from 6:15 until about 9:00. As time went on, the crowd was becoming more livid with each passing moment. We had beer thrown on us, people acting retarded, anything you can imagine. During this time I also personally spotted Dean & Robert DeLeo creeping out from backstage from time to time, and trust me, I know what they look like. Several other people who were there swear that they saw all three band members. The staff and sheriff's department also later confirmed that all band members were there besides Scott. The staff and the Hillsbourough Co. Sheriff's dept. also told fans that they heard Scott was in a hospital in Ft. Lauderdale due to overdose. So anyway, we stand there for almost 2 hours listening to house music and dealing with this hot, stinky, pissed off, sweating mess of a crowd. Finally about 10:30 they announce that STP wont be playing due to "incliment weather" in ft. lauderdale, and they said the ENTIRE BAND was delayed. At this point the crowd is near riot. They didnt give a shit...Rob, Dean, & Eric didnt even have the balls to come onstage and apologize or show themselves. And they were not nice about it, we were basically told to get the fuck out, NOW. And to top it all off, the official website has an apology and explanation (mysterious incliment weather again) saying the show was cancelled, dated 8/22. I got a bulliten on myspace the morning of 8/23 saying the show was still on. They are trying to pretend like they gave us notice or something. The facts are that we are 99.9% sure Rob, Dean, and Eric showed. We are 100% sure all their equipment, roadies, and opening acts showed. All blame then is aimed at Weiland. Everyone else was were they were supposed to be, doing what they were supposed to be doing. And with his track record what the fuck else are we supposed to think. They set up the entire stage, did a full sound check, fog machines, even brought out Mr. Weilands fucking orange gatorade and fiji water (told ya, Im a diehard fan). If it were an illness, family emergency, injury, etc, they could have just as easily told us that instead of the weather bullshit. It would have been much more understandable and believable. I checked and there is no arrest record and he's obviously not dead. THE ONLY final explanation is that he got fucked up/OD'ed and they are trying to cover it up so they can keep making money. Everyone has said from the get go that on this tour they are all about dragging Weiland around to make a buck before he dies, and I never believed the shit until now. If they had a shred of dignity they would at least come up with a better lie than the weather shit. I mean, we live in Florida, we KNOW for a FACT there was no bad weather at all between Tampa and South Florida within 24 hours of the show. There are FANS that drove from South Florida to the show. Plus, I know Weiland would have called someone before ten fucking thirty if he was delayed due to weather. The band does not want everyone to know Scott is fucked up because they will lose $$$. I would bet money that he does not make it through the rest of this tour. Im getting my money back if at all possible, it doesnt look like even a remote possibility that logistically STP can make this show up, even if Scott pulls through. And besides that Im not wasting my money on gas, a hotel, food, etc, for a band that cant even tell their fans the truth. Or at least spend 5 minutes and an ounce of creative energy coming up with a lie that some people might actually be able to force themselves to believe. They just said "FUCK YOU" to everyone in Florida, and moved on to the next show without blinking an eye. After all, gotta make that dollar to spend on the next fix. I do feel for Rob, Dean, Eric and Scott's wife & kids. I just wish he would feel for them, too.

I am waiting to see if there will be a rescheduled date but am not hopeful. The name calling of Scott isn't productive or necessary. Obviously the man has issues. We are all disappointed but can't be too shocked. I genuinely hope he's ok. The lying by STP management is ridiculous. I hope they come clean because the truth will come out eventually. The fans deserve the respect of hearing it from them and not another source who uncovers it. I hope this situation is made right because until then I can't listen to their music because of the ill feelings it brings up.

Anyone that buys a ticket after hearing about all of the shit that has been involved with this tour on this website alone (nevermind other sources that told of screaming between band members at PNC in Jersey), gets what they pay for. The negative reviews have FAR outnumbered the positive. Even fuckin' Axl was given positive reviews on his performance-he just wouldn't go on in time. This is trainwreck, and anyone that wants to help finance it is welcome to.

I understand a lot of you who attented this show are pissed. I don't blame you one bit. But what IF something bad actually happend? They should tell the truth, but rioting is such a problem that the "truth" sometimes isn't a good way to go as far as a "best scenario" solution. Don't blame Scott or STP until we find out what reallly happend. I think Scott needs a vacation, more rehab, and some therapy. Scott has mental issues (beyond addiction and they are documented) and needs to be treated as a human, not a peice of shit junkie that you guys keep calling him. He needs help. Why don't people care about others anymore? Where's the love? What if they just found out Scott or God forbid like Vince Neil, his child had cancer and he couldn't perform under those circumstances? Man, give the guy(s) a break. I hope you all get a refund or a new concert. But, this is REAL LIFE folks. Be reasonable.
