Is SLIPKNOT's Music To Blame For Deadly South African School Attack?
- Aug. 23, 2008
|
|
According to Daily Dispatch Online, less than a week after a South African teenager killed a fellow student with a sword and wounded three others while wearing a mask similar to masks worn by heavy metal band SLIPKNOT, speculation about the reasons for his behavior has ranged from the influence of Satanism to drugs, from bullying to the pervasive effect of popular culture and media on young minds. Seventeen-year-old Selborne College student Lloyd Zacharias looks anything but a SLIPKNOT fan. He's a well-mannered matriculant. His tucked shirt is crisp and he is very articulate. Given the grotesque image of SLIPKNOT, few people would imagine that he is a heavy metal fanatic who owns some of the band's CDs. "I listen to them for the music itself and not so much about what they have to say. I like the way they put their music together. “I don't think their lyrics are that bad as many people would think. Heavy metal music needs a strong-minded person and if you are not, then you'll find yourself doing funny things," says Lloyd. Some of his friends also listen to heavy metal music. "They aren't exactly guys that I would say are living dangerously. It also depends on the person because you can't say 'this song is going to make me kill someone' unless you have an interest from something else." East London psychologist Liezel Gordon says many teenagers are under pressure to fit in and are struggling to form their own identities. Although she says the media, particularly music, should not be blamed, they have a measure of influence on how teenagers perceive things. "It's difficult to prove that a specific thing has a certain influence but my experience with teenagers is that the more they are exposed to certain things in the media, the more they regard those things as the norm," explains Gordon. "If they are exposed to a lot of violence or exposed to some of the ideas that come out of the music, then they think that is how people should behave. "Music can trigger emotional response but it's not to say a person has to go and act out that response. "Having said that, I don't think one song will cause bad behaviour unless one is very vulnerable and has other stresses and influences which could lead up to being vulnerable to what they hear." In my opinion: an ever-growing portion of today's youth, more so than any previous generation, are with the delusion they are largely 'untouchable' by 'the man' - impervious to suffering (if you will) overtly harsh consequences for their actions. Media no doubt plays a large role in the various images a lot of kids choose to take up with - the way in which they portray themselves to others - but I do not think any form of media can be blamed for physical actions undertaken which bring about harm to others.

Even though I hate Slipknot.....I would have to say NO Slipknots music had nothing to do with what happened....It was the persons own choice and free will to do so, Anyone else that says other wise is a damn fool and does not know the meaning of responsibility!
Also blaming Satanism is rather stupid too its also an easy target, So is drugs... When will people learn its their own choices not what you believe !? Are people that stupid? Yes they are.

i am in the exact same spot as lloyd. to be frank, i hate dressing in black and anything that goes along with that apparel (belts, rings, whatever) but love metal more than almost everyone on this website, that much i know. less than one thousandth of one percent may commit as violent acts as this kid has, but it does not mean the music has twitched his mind in such a way that it creates a belief that killing is what needs to be done. Someone like that needs psychological help obviously, but of all the murderers in our world today, i bet my life that metal is not the music of the majority of them. I could care less about what the bands have to say about the world. To be quite frank, there words of wisdom have absolutely no bearing on what I tend to do with my life or what this life may have in store for me. I listen to the musicianship. The way how so many different kinds of instruments can be put together to create such a complex, yet such a simple structure of a song. I'm not going to lie, I love the music bands like Slipknot, Metallica, and Slayer put out, regardless of how popular they are in the modern scene. I also love bands like Anterior, Krisiun, and Spineshank; bands that only a select few know about but can create music that defies what most bands can do with a drum kit, a bass, a few guitars, and a vocalist. The percent of the global population that listens to music like this remote compared to the "music of today" that Mtv covers, and to believe that one song of maybe one of the most popular bands in a very small genre (numerically) is absurd. Although so many people hate bands like Slipknot, they still went into the metal scene, obviously knowing that only a select few will be able to live the life that so many do. They may "sell out" as so many of you say they do, but can a band that scares the absolute shit out of so many people really be in it for the money? This world needs to have an answer to anything that happens. Shown by the increasing numbers of atheist citizens and diverse peoples, there are still some areas that we know nothing of. We can show why retinol A is an anti-carcinogen, but when given to smokers, it only increases cancer, so we just give them the whole damn tomato. I know this essay I just wrote goes off on tangents and is obviously not the best evidence against blaming music, but the world needs to open their fucking eyes, despite the obvious cliche mentioned there. There are so many bands that say the exact same shit as metal bands but when someone gets stabbed, it's always the "creepy" and "scary" people in the media. Politicians wear masks, but just because they are transparent doesn't mean they aren't there. To all of those who hate Slipknot, feel that metal is the reason for such acts of violence, and for those who think they know abosolutely everything about this world, Fuck you. Life is short and you cannot know everything, it's as simple as that. Believe all the magazine articles you read and all of the blogs that so many "knowledgeable" people write, but they are only a select few of the population. Although I don't know shit about what this world may bring to me in the future, think for yourself. Don't let organized religion, song lyrics, or other people guide you. If what you believe in matches what other people preach, then that is where you belong. You have the power to do it yourself, so do it....

This article is pathetic. They call Slipknot "the most revolting band in the world", which means they've never seen GWAR or the late GG Allin. And they also have to go back 40 to 50 years when Elvis and The Beatles shocked everyone with their appearance and performances. Get with the current century, doofuses. This just creates more negative press for Slipknot.
Interesting that for all the apartheid system in South Africa creating violence for decades, they only see fit to target an American band for the cause of one kid's problems.

Not to reinforce any stereotypes here but South Africa was never cast as the shining example of a crime-free country to begin with (statistically it's ranked above the US in terms of the number of violent crimes worldwide; look it up on Google, kids). Blaming Slipknot's music on the actions of one clearly deranged individual won't make the country any safer overnight.
So, short answer: No. Even if the band in question sucks.

this old story again??? why?? what is the point of blaming music or movies or tv or anything of that nature?? that is one of the biggest loads of shit i've ever heard. some dumbas kid goes out and laughters a bunch of people, yeah Slipknot has to be behind it. music, as powerful as it can be, does not influence any sort of fuckin behavior you may have. if anything, maybe pop music should be blamed for everything, cuz after hearingsome of that i feel like going on a massacre or 2. i have been listening to Slipknot since the fucking beginning, and at no time have i ever thought, hmmm, i wanna kill this guy cuz it's in a Slipknot song, or Manson or whomever. if i'm pissed at someone, it's not cuz of any music... it's cuz of them. oh, and to all you Slipknot haters: get a hobby or something. it's hard to believe that all of you actually take the time to come to sites like this, log in, and type a message on how gay and stupid Slipknot and their fans are. check out the mirror sometime fuckbags. and don't even bother responding to this, because chances are, my membership will be suspended after posting this. plus i'd never see it anyway. save some time, maybe try getting a woman or rearrange your Britney CDs or something.
stay sic fuckers

Fuck no. Personally, if anything, I think Slipknot's music has had the opposite effect on me.
I remember the first fucking time I put on Iowa, with no idea or expectation, I was fucking blown away. In this band I found a release, an energy that I could relate to that no other band could touch. Their anger, the expression taught me something no one else did. Because everything the world puts on you... all the fucking assholes, the lies... the religions... it made me want to kill everyone. It made me want to kill myself.... I couldn't channel my anger or depression...i was fucking lost.
But their music taught me that you don't have to lose it all, there is a positive release, a way to vent. At a time where I wouldn't confide in anyone out of fear of imprisonment... these guys made me feel human... they showed me there is a way to cope... And that is the ultimate message of their music I think. I believe, In the end, their message is actually positive.
"I am a world before I am man." So fuckin' rock on slipknot, we love you guys!
