METALLICA: Early 'Death Magnetic' Review Posted Online
- Aug. 25, 2008
|
|
Contra Costa Times writer Tony Hicks has posted an "early" review of METALLICA's new CD, "Death Magnetic", which he apparently was privileged enough to hear in its entirety last week. A couple of excerpts from his write-up follow: "I got to spend the afternoon today (Thursday, August 21) at METALLICA HQ in Marin, listening to the band's new record 'Death Magnetic', which comes out Sept. 12 (that's what my sheet says, even though new CDs usually come out on Tuesdays, not Fridays). "I will tell you that no one, but NO ONE leashes Kirk Hammett on 'Death Magnetic', and the result is some of the best playing of his career. You can hear lots of echoes of their first four albums (not to mention one echo from the kindler, gentler 90s on 'The Unforgiven III'). One leftover from 'St. Anger' is that 'Death Magnetic' features few songs sounding like they were written around a vocal hook, which was how METALLICA got their sneering faces on MTV so much in the '90s. The difference from 'St. Anger' is that the riffs, while still heavy, aren't crashing about searching for a place to settle within the songs. The songs have better structure and just sound better. METALLICA is back to powering fast, central riffs, occasionally breaking ranks and tempo for some IRON MAIDEN-ish breakouts, then building to … you guessed it, the muscley solo from Hammett. "But don’t get too excited. While better than 'St. Anger', the songs again seem so intent on proving METALLICA still brings the thunder that something is occasionally out of place. There's barely a vocal hook in sight — something the band could pull off more than capably on the early records, even if it was shouting a few words to pass for a chorus. Somehow it just doesn't work so well anymore. But [ James] Hetfield and [ Lars] Ulrich may have been so pleased at how well the band sounds the first time in the studio with bassist Robert Trujillo, they just blew off the the choruses. The whole band sounds tight and absolutely stacked. Some of the songs sound like they came from jams, including the instrumental 'Suicide & Redemption', which built slowly into layers of blistering Hammett. Read the entire review at this location.

Unfortunately, amongst their haze of commercial jockery, so far up these guys asses, they'll never discover true metal! LOL

Can't believe the 2 new songs I've heard are actually pretty good. I don't really like the way he sings sometimes (he shouldn't sing slowly) but musically it's not bad at all. Should be their best since the black album, maybe even Justice.

Instrumental sounds good.. Metallica jams are great.. I'd rather have an hour of the guys in Metallica jamming than 20 seconds of slow ballad shit with the gentle James crooning crap.
A growling James, shredding Kirk, Lars when he's not playing lazy and Robert given some freedom to unleash his talent and power is the magic formula.

can one say the new album sucks when they've released what, 2 songs? So what? You don't like one song. Do you like every song on every other album? Let it come out before you start saying it sucks. St. Anger was a blunder... shit happens. Kinda like when Kiss released a disco album... ya know? I just happened to of liked St. Anger, but that's my opinion.
Honestly, I think they've gone back to their roots, just in a more mature manner. When they wrote their first 4 albums they were young guys, full of anger. Ya know, "rebel against your elders" type of shit. Well, they're in their 40s now, that kinda anger just goes away. No, you can't recreate the first 4 albums, but who'd really want that anyways? You want them to reproduce KEA 15 times? I have a good feeling about this album... I think it's gonna go over great. You know you all, even the haters, will check it out. All I'm saying is give it a chance.

really?! my apocalypse, people are liking this? This is an outtake from St. Anger. Worst metallica song I've ever heard, period. I like half the St. Anger songs better than the My Apocalypse song.
I'm actually really depressed now. The first single wasn't all that hot... at first it was amazing. But then I realized there's zero talent in the riffs. Nothing special. My Apocalypse, basically any 14 year old who's played the guitar for a couple of years can play this thing solid.
There's no technique. No catchy phrases. Nothing that would make the song "fun" to play, ever, live or in your bedroom with the shades down. It's not inspiring at all.
So it's weird to see people like it, but I'm glad they do. At least someone does. I guess I'll be one of the NON-HATERs that's going to be disappointed.

Not Unforgiven III??? Well, I guess you couldn't make the latter a single (second single, guaranteed) without lyrics, especially in this day and age...

Any song that relies on vocal hooks is a poor song anyway. It can help a song, but many of these "alternative" bands that have vocal hooks have weak songs when the vocals are removed e.g. The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clhOnZRrmXc). It's more or less the same note played at the same tempo. And music reviews are pointless anyway; music is subjective.

When you're looking for information to base a decision around, maybe it's best to get it from someone who knows how to form a coherent thought. Just sayin...I don't have a fucking clue what he's talking about.

Rick Rubin is widely known in the recording industry as a career-saver. He restored credibility to the ailing careers of artists like Weezer and Johnny Cash. When an interviewer asked Rivers Cuomo what he'd been listening to lately, he said "I listen to whatever Rick Rubin tells me to listen to." Lol, Rubin probably made James and Lars hole up and listen to Evile and Violator for three months.
Still, I can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at the idea of Kirk being allowed to play burning solos again.
The 90s are finally over! Whoopee!!

I was hoping to be able to hate this album as an album from a band who was simply going along to go along. Putting out another disappointing CD to follow up the noise and shit music delight that was St. Anger.
Well I have to say that it is so far a pretty bad ass album and actually is a great next step from and justice for all.
If it were me I would give this a solid 7 or 8 out of 10.

This release is better than "st. anger" but does not touch MOP, AJFA, or Black. I would even be confident to say that I would fit this below Load, and above Reload.
Only 1 or 2 songs really caught my ear. And of those songs there are parts that just dont flow. That what I loved about MOP and AJFA; as heavy as they were they make sense and all the parts fit. This album just seem out of place in Metallica's career.
Vocally I find the album weaker than St. Anger. No songs that I would really want to sing along with... even if the melody is good the lyrics just stink.
Personally, As much as they had free reigns with this albums it seems they tried to hard to impress the hard core the fans... very sad to see this.
I was really hoping for a variety of Metallica for this release, but just find that if I wanted to listen to music like this I will click on a MOP or AJFA song in my MP3 list and enjoy it much more...
Bottom line is if you are the type that likes it heavy and fast, and dont care about the lyrics and vocals you will enjoy thrashing your head to this. If you were expecting Metallica to redeem themselves after REload, St. Anger... besides only parts (not the complete songs) of 1 or 2 songs, you will most likely be dissapointed...
Please retire Metallica - or do what you do best - please stop trying to please producers and/or the fans...

Unbelievable as it may sound, Metallica sounds GREAT on this album. The guitars are crisp, Hetfields riffing is heavy, the drumming fast, vocals aggressive and enough shredding to keep everyone happy for a long time. To those dissing this album---->a BIG FUCK YOU _|__, you dipshits have no idea what you are talking about. Agreed it was fashionable to slam Metallica some time back, hell even I would slam them. After Load,Reload and St. Shit, this comes as a major surprise. Buy this album, its worth it.... Songs of Note: 1>That was just your life 2>End of the line (riff from Death is not the end is here) 3>Day that never comes (song in the vein of One and Sanitarium) 4>Cyanide 5>Judas Kiss (most memorable riff here) 6>Suicide and Redemption (instrumental) 7>My Apocalypse (very Battery-ish)
Again take my word for it, DM is great. 9/10

Those who listen to this album and then have a go at Metallica for trying to hard to please there fans should just all sod off. this album is quite simply the best they have achieved since master of puppets. 7 min classic head banging anthems. what more do people want from metallica. people have been going on at metallica for years now to go back to their early roots and record an album in the mould of master of puppets. well folks for me this is it. if you dont like 7 to 10 min thrashing headbanging tunes then simply dont buy this album and then hate it. if however you love old school metallica then get hold of this album and it will blow your socks off.

Ok, the reviewer had the chance to hear the album and write about it. that does not make him any more worth listening to than anyone else that heard it and wants to speak about it-
St.OddShit sucked dick, everyone get over it. the dude gives it a A-. This should rule this moron's opinion out.
The real question is: how many of these winy little babies have actually listened to the fucking record? And stop comparing it to their other albums. Ppl get older , so does the band, so does their shit, and so should you- No it does not justify a style change, but it sure fuckin explains it. I really don't wanna hear a bunch of 40 year olds attempt to play some Four Horsemen shit. Not their freaking element anymore. Wanna hear that ? Listen to Kill 'Em all again. ya fucking have it anyways.
The album is pretty fucking good. Yah, i got it. You don't like it , well, stop wasting your precious "hardcore dude" time and don't listen to it. It's all about personal liking . Go back to your 30 seconds To Mars albums and sob while singing the hooks out loud.
The saddest thing is that most part of ppl trashing it w/o hearing first. And these fuckers weren't even born when Black came out.
Seriously, go away.

Ok to the people that say listen to the album first before you judge it Heard it...Sounds like a metallica cover band.. and about them growing up thats true but that doesnt mean they are writing music for "Metallica" they are writing music that would please the masses, back before they released the black album (which in my opinion is still a great album but the last one) mostly die hard metalhead thrashers would come up to me telling me they're into metallica, but nowadays people that come up to me telling me they're fans of Metallica are 14 year old kids that listen to fall out boy too...and most of em eventually listen to something else, Maiden is a perfect example, the guys have been goin strong forEVER ! and they have fans of all ages but they are known for traditional metal ! not known as a commercial band, the test of time will prove that albums like death magnetic will not be remembered for long ... but albums like The Number Of The Beast,Master Of Puppets,Slaughter Of The Soul will ..

For the donks out there hoping this album sucks, that is The Day That Never Comes b/c Death Magnetic rules ass. After SEVEN listens all the way through one of my bros had this to say, "Some of the riffs are so beebop, I grabbed the door knob in my office, started bronko (busting) and ripped that shit off the hinges!" and I have to agree. As someone who had to head to the corridor during Am I Evil? at the Cow Palace in '89, let me tell you that if these guys are too old to shred then Pallin is a good choice for America going forward.
I think it may be true Trujillo is in the background of the mix, but my guess is that many of the ideas for the riffs and progressions came from his index and ring fingers, and that the fresh blood is exactly what these guys needed.
Another comment from a friend, "I think my chin rest turned into a lathe on my door frame sliding that shit slow up and down. Of course, there is the Bleed Machine Gun Door also, where you try to pop the knob out both sides with your peepee."
I don't know what that means, and yes Bleed is merely folklore and possibly a figment of everyone's collective imagination, but all that being said, my comment is that the first 1:13 of All Nightmare Long is worth $14 in and of itself.

No vocal hooks? The reviewer guy is a moron who wants to look more smart than he is. I'm not sure about the record overall, I've listen to it a couple of times but its too soon to judge. But there are lots of great vocal lines. This guy has no clue.

First...anyone who thinks/says/wants to imagine in their frail little egos that Kirk Hammett sucks needs to go ahead and stick a gun in their mouth. Esp Mr. "I love my own dumb-ass opinions on Metal" 111222. Galder? Riiiiight..... I won't even waste time on that comment from the tard gallery. For intothepit1: use the holes on the side of your head and LISTEN, moron. Mohab.... if you have an opinion, even an incompetent one like it seems you're trying to get across, please let it make sense next time you write it. Oh, and nyc333.... please for your own sake, just remember the next time you post that people like you get laughed at (a LOT), and then the page gets scrolled down. And that's all.
You405 has it right: "...stop comparing it to their other albums. Ppl get older , so does the band, so does their shit, and so should you-"
How many opportunities did this band have to roll over and die? Plenty. And they didn't. Now they prove it. Props fellas.
Haters of Metallica: get over yourselves and your jealousy. Sorry if Metallica put Metal on the map, and in much greater magnitude than your band of choice. Let them do what they do and be what they are: guys who just want to play metal.
And for shit's sake, if you want to criticize this album, do it to your own mindless contentment, but listen to it first. You might want to at least TRY and give yourselves an ounce of credibility before you TRY and bring them down.
TRUE Fans: Keep it up. Pop in DM and enjoy the lastest chapter in one of Metal's greatest epics that is Metallica. They're still here, and they're still and shredding. That's all we ask.

If you want an accurate review - go here:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/145305-metallica-death-magnetic
BTW Rick Rubin should be taken out back and beaten to death with all the copies of ST. Anger that never sold - the production values on this album are AWFUL it sounds distorted at low volumes.
