Very cool riffage. A little to be desired vocally - just not as memorable as I would have thought. Or maybe it's just the fact that his voice just isn't as ferocious as it was in the days when they actually used to sound more like this. Seems a bit low in the mix too. Either way, some cool shit.

I dunno, I think some people are so desperate for Metallica to be great again that they`re getting over-excited. It`s a decent tune but nothing special, fairly basic riff and un-memorable song. Kirk`s in good form but it`s hardly a classic. I like it, best thing they`ve done in ages, but fuck, it`s nowhere near the best song I`ve heard this year!

Metallica has came back to thrash metal.
I liked The Day That Never Comes however Cyanide was decent but overall not so great. This song just sealed the deal. One more CD to get in September along with Amon Amarth and Jeff Loomis.

Looking back over their best early albums, the best tracks appear early on in the album, with the somewhat exception of creep and seek. This song fucking rips hard and it's the last track.... the early side is going to tear our scrotes to shreds... and we shall love it. They're just teasing us for now...
Liked TDTNC and Cyanide, by far their best stuff in years. Though can't wait to hear the tracks in more decent audio setting than streaming....

A lot of Slayer vibe going on in this song... i like it !
The solo has a fresh sound to Kirk´s style and doesn´t sound to forced.
The mix puts me a bit off though, i don´t like how loud the fucking snare is in the mix it suffocates everything, Hetfield´s vocal has a st.anger sound to it, could be because of the mike they chose.
And you can hear talking and laughter when the song end´s, i thought that something like that would have been avoided, or the rawness of how demo´s often sound is what they were going for.
The mastering distort´s everything, everything is loud.

You're kidding yourself if you say this is "uninspired" or the riffs are generic... if these riffs are generic, so are the ones on Ride the Lightning, Justice, etc because they are just as good. And James sounds pissed.

Great Karamba! After hearing the new tracks all faith has been restored in Metallica. I just knew that this time they were going to come up with an album that will prove that you will make a big mistake in wrtinig them off as has beens.
I hear a lot of snippets from the older albums - Ride the Lightning - and what a relief that the Tonka Toy drum kit has been replaced with a proper one witth real cymbals.
I think that 12 September - besides being Neil Peart's birthday is going to be a special day for all Metallica fans when they get seriously magnetised.

The couple of songs I've heard so far are simply. I actually was one of there naive fanboys back in the early 90's, but after St Anger, the only way they'll regain praises from me is by releasing a classic MOP/reign in blood/number of the beast type record.
This will, however, probably be their best album in the last 2 decades (thanks to Rick Rubin???). Nether the less, they ARE wasted and not that inspired.

I agree with the post that said that this will just be Metallica's Christ Illusion. But in the sense that this will win them a couple of grammys and sell a bunch, and will kick ass along the way. James voice seems to be less worn than Tom's though (has anyone seen Slayer perform angel of death lately? Tom can't even be fucked doing the scream anymore becuz he sounds like a hollow shell of his former self these days).
Its gotta be Rick. Everything he touches turns to gold (except for that last Linkin Park album, but one shit album compared to a bunch of classics can't be wrong)

Consider Death Angel. They have released an album this year which is just as good as their best stuff from the eighties. In contrast, Metallica tries to recapture past glories only to confirm that they have long lost the ability to write good songs. If you compare My Apocalypse to Reload or St. Anger, it may seem good. However, if you compare it to the many other (thrash) metal songs that have been released this year, it is average at best.

I kind of believe that most of you haven't listened much to other metal bands, because Metallica's been outclassed and outdone numerous times since 1988's '...And Justice for All'.
This song is nothing special but for the fact that you hear it's James Hetfield singing. Without his signature voice this would fast become a forgettable, uninspired thrash metal track. "The Day that Never Comes" was better. But to each his own.

I can understand that you're really trying to like this, but I think you're all just fooling yourselves.
Of course it's better, and more metal than we've heard for a long time, but is it really good? There is nothing really memorable about this song or the riffs, except the fact that they're really trying their asses off to sound like slayer.
I guess that's nice, to try to sound like a great band instead of shit, but it's just not working. It's not a heavy band, it's a band trying to sound heavy.
The worst part is probably the drums, I need to say no more. The vocals are pretty bad as well.
So what do we have here? We have a song that is better than shit, but still not impressive compared to what real thrash bands have put out in the last years. (Testament, Slayer, Exodus etc)

I don't agree but if that was true....it would be fine considering Practice What You Preach was the biggest Metallica ripoff ever. Testament was considered a Metallica ripoff for years.
Keep in mind I like Testament and I've been in bands that have played with Testament since the 90's. I've met and hung with Chuck several times. He's cool as hell.
I just hate people talking about Metallica ripping people off. They are one of the most ripped off bands ever. Godsmack is Metallica (Load era - original songs) and you see every redneck on the planet wearing Godsmack T-shirts while repeating the "Metallica hasnt been good since the Black album" mantra.
Glad to hear them put out some songs that are good enough that there is no real debate with the haters.

a) It sounds as if on day 1 Rick Rubin said, "alright guys, write a Slayer song".
b) Who is responsible for holding back the distortion on the guitars? Where is the METALLICA guitar crunch sound that we've all come to know and love? The song is good but the mix on the sound/instruments makes me wonder who didn't earn their pay on this album? Is it Rick? Mixing guys? Techs? The bands choice? WHO would be the one that says, "you know, your guitars sound fucking awesome, let's cut that back some so their not as tough and angry sounding".
c) I absolutely think this album will be great. I liked the song on the first listen, sometimes (like the day that never comes) a song will need to grow on me a little.. this one is hot for me right out of the box.
I've been a huge fan of Metallica since the period between KEA and RTL - I wish the guys luck with this CD but don't think they'll need it. They're fucking Metallica, I'll be buying it first day and playing the hell out of it many times a day like I have been with all their stuff.. I'll love it and I'm sure it'll be a HUGELY successful for them.
Thanks to Metallica for giving Robert the bass spot and thanks for another great piece of music history - the music means a lot to so many of us. September 12th can't come fast enough for me.

Now, Rick Rubins input managed to f*** up Slayers "God hates us all" brilliant pre-production and here he is again doing a worthless job. No wonder Metallica wants him. They got the S:t Anger snare so appreciated by these sellouts. To go with it the have dried-up lame guitars and James seenbetterdays- crapvocals. And Lars is...well ;))). To me it seems like Metallica don't know how to bridge their ideas together into one coherent song. There are to many parts in the song that just seem out of place. Something that could not have happened in 1984.
The Energy is nice though and there are some cool riffs here and there making this the best song Metallica has written in 17 years. But that is telling you absolutely s***-nothing!

The snare has that crappy "st anger" trashcan sound.
James vocals aren't much better than his vocals on St. Anger.
The music is better and hearing Kirk again is great but overall it's not surprising how much all these angry white boys are loving it.

I got all excited about this song at first and sure it's alot better than most stuff they released since Justice, BUT... The song just doesn't grab me. Sure it's fast and all but where's the hooks? Even fast songs like Blackened or Battery had hooks but this just goes on with no sense of purpose.
I was never very impressed with Kirks' solos so i can't say I'm excited to have them back.
And the drums are way too loud yet again, which makes me believe it will be another album ruined by a snare drum.
Don't get me wrong, I REALLY want to like this but I get the feeling this won't be the album I was hoping for. Like anyone cares what a blabberwhore thinks but anyway :)

As a lifelong Metallica fan I have to say this is by far one of the greatest songs I've heard in years. I love it, and I really don't understand all the negative comments?? This is what I've heard for the past... what is it? 17 years? "Metallica needs to quit making hard rock albums and put out another thrash album, like Puppets or Lightning" And they release this song and the same people say "Oh, they are trying too hard to sound like Puppets or Lightning". I just downloaded both singles off of itunes and it sounds WAY better than the stream. Best 2 bucks I spent on recorded Metallica in OVER 20 years. I liked Justice, but there was no bass sound on the whole album with the exception of "To Live Is To Die". Cannot wait to hear the rest. Damn, I kind of almost feel like a kid again. The same feeling I got one late summer evening in Largo Md back in 86 when my buddies and I went to see Ozzy and some band we never heard of named Metallica.

Wow heavy aggressive thrash! I like this song much better than 'The Day That Never Comes' which is still decent. Sure it's not Master or Ride good but that would be unrealistic at this point. Just good to hear Metallica playing METAL again instead of radio rock.
Just hoping that the rest of the album is like this and they just didn't save the heaviest track for last.

What does everyone expect? These guys are pushing 50 and they stopped playing thrash metal 20 years ago. The only heavy shit they have listened to are the bands that have opened for them like Machine Head. Just a few years ago James is on t.v. singing at some country speacial. They have no clue on how to structure thrash songs anymore. It's a good try but that is it. James is still writing good lyrics though. It's not bad and it's not killer.

...since "And Justice", but that doesn't mean that its great. Let's face it..this band can't and won't top their first 4 albums. No song will be as good as any they wrote then, in that period. The first album I ever bought was "And Justice..." in 1988 when I was 7 years old. It changed my life forever and that is why I still have always held out hope. This song is good...as compared to what they've done in the past 17 years. However, it is good to see them get some fire back and rid of the complacency that was in this band since 1991. I still think Lars is the worst drummer in the world.

I listened to these songs with low expectations, but so I'm very pleasantly surprised. As a lot of people have been saying, the style and sound of these songs is better than anything they've done since the 80's. As for how good the actual songs are... well, I'm going to have to hear them more to judge that. But, it's very encouraging so far. I like the dry production style, by the way--doesn't sound like the raw style of the early records, the overproduced style of most of the Bob Rock records, or the toilet bowl sound of St. Anger.

it is better than anything off Load,ReLoad and St. Anal, but it's nowhere near what they did from "Kill 'Em All" through "Puppets".
Not to mention, not only did Megadeth bring thrash back while Lars was banging trash cans and James was crying like a fat girl on prom night, but there are some many more new thrash bands that picked up the ball when Metallica went alternative.
The new Testament blows this CD away.

I love how some people are saying this just shuts up the 'metallica bashers' as if one song in vaguely the vein of old erases that they didn't release anything worthwhile from '91 (at least... and this is if you like the black album) to present. Pardon me for not being impressed one song sounds a little like the old days. It really isn't a bad song, I give em that, but it's still a mediocre one. Honestly, in the right style or not, does this come remotely close to matching their glory days? I'd give that a big no. I think it's a little soon to be screaming 'They're Back!!!' from the rooftops. Especially considering The Day That Never Comes totally sucks and bores the hell out of me. We'll see what the whole album brings but so far it's (light) hit and miss.

This is metal indeed. I like it. I really do. It ain't as good as the first 4 but it is good. Those first 4 are the best of metal so it's kinda hard to live up to those expectations. They are purely CLASSICS. Anyway, I like this and the other single, Day that Never Comes and Cyanide ain't bad. I'm hearing metal again and it's good. Even if it wasn't metal, if it's good, then it's good.
I don't give a shit about making comparisons to Testament and Exodus or Kreator. Metallica is much different than Kreator and they always were except for thrash beats in both bands.
Good for Metallica. I like what I hear. I gotta get used to it though as opposed to the first 4 which I loved instantly. Once again, they're real hard to beat. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to sound rebellious and cool. Grow the fuck up.

Ok. I still don't like 'That Wast Just Your Life'. However, if songs like this and Cyanide make up the majority of the album it will be a semi-return to form for Metallica.
The music on this was great through out. I was iffy on James Vocals until about the 3 minute mark. After that they were excellent. On a higher quality version this will probably sound amazing.

You guys crack me up, this song is fucking average. It is not thrash, nor does it sound like Slayer (wtf?).
St Anger drums at the start, followed by a clichéd Hetfield "GO!", then after a few minutes it morphs into Battery-lite - sing the words along with it "Crashing through the boundaries.. etc". Lyrics could be much worse but Hetfield is pretty weak.
There's obviously a fine line between making classic music and just repeating the same riffs exactly, mishmashed together. At least Kirk still seems to know what he's doing with that ripper of a solo - if only he had put it into Cyanide (in place of the 2 boring middle minutes), then we would at least have 1 really 'hummable' tune.

Definitely a Slayer vibe with some Exodus/Sacred Reich thrown in there at times. Their best song since Through the Never (one of the few great Black Album songs).
The Day That Never Comes was just a mess that seemed like they were trying too hard, but at least they tried. Cyanide was a cool song that had little to do with "Old Metallica", and it had terrible vocals/lyrics.
This song was simply good. Good riffs, nothing innovative, but it was a good song. Best vocals I have heard from James in a long time (though he still did some corny lines). I am not ready to say they are back, but at least we got one song that reflects the glory days in its own way.

As someone who has Formation of Damnation (the new Testament album), I can say that I like "My Apocalypse" better that any song on that album. You can compare the albums once their both released, although Formation of Damnation will win musically. Skolnick and Bostaph are incredible.

I have been a Metallica basher since the black cd came out(damn I hated that album) and I despised the load cd's. But the past three songs I have heard are fucking great. I never gave up on them and since the Merciful Fate song, there was hope and here it is. It reminds me of some Slayer and you can tell Rick Rubin had a say in this cd..

I know that Matt Hyde produced "God Hates Us All" and the first mix sounded great! But for some stupid reason they did a remix on it and that is where Rick Rubins terrible influence sets in. Let's face it: Rubin was great 17 years ago-now he´s not. Just like Metallica.

Through having seen them live in 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007/2008 and now a GOOD new TRASH song. I have to admit i played St. Anger the other the other day and ended it halfway. But thank you Metallica and by the Beard of Rick Rubin, Metallica is BACK!!!!

haha...you know what happened here? they panicked...they saw what people were saying about "the day that never comes" and they were like "sht!...we have to release the BEST track from this album or else people might not buy it".
So I expect this to be the best track on the album. I had a quick listen and it sounded pretty good tho. best metallica song since the black album.

I've listened to it twice so far and have liked it better each time. This is at the very least much much closer to what people EXPECT from Metallica and want from Metallica. Fast riffs, sensible lyrics, and a little bit of passion and heart.
congratulations Metallica, all the haters are now raising an eyebrow and saying - "ok... you've got my attention, let's hear some more..."
and as for me, I'm actually starting to feel a little more confident that I'm not going to be 100% let down.
