DISTURBED Drummer Says Artists Are To Blame For Public's Unwillingness To Pay For New Albums
- Aug. 27, 2008
|
|
Simon Milburn of Australia's The Metal Forge recently conducted an interview with DISTURBED drummer Mike Wengren. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow. On the commercial success of the band's latest album, "Indestructible": "We were fortunate enough to go to number one in Australia and New Zealand, the United States, and I wanna even say Canada. At the same time, since then, with the five weeks that the record has been out, we've already gone gold in the U.S., Canada, and we've gone gold in Australia and platinum in New Zealand, so we're very, very excited. At the same time, I think it's a testament to our fans. Y'know, our fans around the world, they stick by us, they support us, and we really wouldn't be able to achieve the success that we've had without them." "We definitely had some doubt because of the state of the industry, y'know, with downloading so prevalent and sales down worldwide roughly twenty percent each year, it's definitely a concern of ours. But at the same time, we felt that we stepped up and delivered the record that the industry was desperately needing." On illegal music downloading: "Y'know, I think everyone is trying to point the finger — record labels are to blame and everyone else is to blame, but I personally feel that it's the artists that are to blame. If the artists put out great music and they put out great records instead of records that had maybe one or two good singles on it and the rest of the record is totally filler, then I think that would be a huge part of it. I think people would be willing to buy a good-quality record and I think that our fans prove that. We pride ourselves on taking the time on every single note, every single beat, and making sure that there are no fillers on our records, and our fans know it. They appreciate it, and they come out and they actually buy the records. The sales have definitely reflected that. Y'know, I don't want to sound conceited in any way. But we know that our fans work hard for their money and we don't want to cheat them. We wanna give them every penny worth." On the press' reactions to the "Indestructible" album: "Y'know, to be completely honest with you, I think that some of the reviews that I have heard of are pleasant ones, but to be completely honest with you, we don't really pay attention to the reviews. We kinda write the music for ourselves and for our fans. Again, by the record sales, the fans have turned out and they are buying the record and that means to us that they love it and we love it, and honestly, that's all that matters to us. I don't really care what some person in a suit and tie or whatever that sits behind a desk and a computer really has to say about our record, y'know?" Read the entire interview from The Metal Forge.

whose opinion matters to say what is considered "1 or 2 good songs on it?" I remember a friend of mine saying that years ago about artists. but you know what? she wasn't into any artist that i know of on a hardcore level. basically, bands have always done this...you write a song and if you feel it's good enough it gets recorded. christ most artists making songs on major labels probably start out with say 100 riffs, 50 become songs, 25 jammed out by the band and say 15-20 demoed, then 12-15 recorded...it really is whittle down when making an album these days...
the artist in the 70's had records out every 6 or 9 or 12 months because the record stopped selling cause the 1 or 2 singles were fizzling out. the whole basis is there it's just that there is no time or money for record companies to "develop" artists. artists should have it from the get go...whose signing some of these bands anyway? some of them really suck...i've seen some suckass bands live...who is the person buying there albums? not me...I saw Disturbed this year...they deserved my money for a live show...i got the album as well...it's mainly good in my opinion but again i am faily hardcore about them...

says Y' Know a LOT. I hate that.
Indestructible does indeed have some filler on it. And those songs might not be so bad if they didn't suffer from this--aggressive verses (which I love) and PUSSY choruses. They need to work on making those choruses heavier. That's why I don't listen to this disc.

Record companies are suffering like EVERY OTHER busines. The economy sucks, and ha=s been gettoing worse,do they expect to sell well while nothing else is? Places like Starbucks are closing stores instead of opening them. The economy gets better, record sales get better.
Also, people forget that the record companies had a boom of business in the 90s due to the release of CDs,many went and bought things they already owned, thus making sales betyter than they would be naturally.
When the enomy gets better and there is a new media, sales will go back up.

I don't buy this "artists recording filler" bullshit argument at all. Filler is subject to the ear of the individual and now that illegal downloading is rampant because the technology is readily available every one cries "Filler!" Nobody was saying crap like "only two or three good songs on an album" before this era.
Maybe today's fan needs to expand their attention spans.
Illegal downloading is just a case of getting something for nothing and we now have a whole new generation of "Fans" raised on downloading.

I bought it off Napster and don't hear any filler but then again I can respect how much time it takes to write an album so that may make me bias. Alot of Blabbermouthers don't know how to write music and can't play an instrument so I put little weight in most of what is said here. If you don't like a band, don't listen. If you think you might not like the album, stream it first on Amazon or Napster and then don't buy it if ya don't like it. It's pretty simple.

My favorite tracks off of albums tend to be the ones you'd never hear on the radio. And Piss Off. This album rocked! And records sales have been going thru the floor long before the economy started to tank. And that's my 2 cents.

I agree with the above comment. Filler is the opinion of the listener. I happen to like the new album. I downloaded first though, cause I didn't want another fiasco like what happened with St. Anger...Bought that album without listening to it first.
Anyhow, Disturbed's new album is a great listen. I enjoy it.

... about the point that two good songs don't make a great album. I mean, in the US, CDs are like, $20-25 now (for a single album); if you have, say, 10 songs on it and only two are good, you've wasted *80%* of that money.
What downloading does for the fans is allow us to preview if the songs are good enough to buy. This also serves the artist because it tells him what his fans like.
Remember, guys, if we don't buy it, they're eventually out of a job, but also, if they don't make a good product, we don't have to buy it.

"The Night" is musically the best song Disturbed has ever recorded, check it out on Youtube, very nice guitar work by Mr. Donegan.

Where on earth are you living in the US that single albums are 20-25 dollars? The most expensive retailer I can think of is FYE at 18 bucks an album at most, while places like Circuit City and Best Buy will charge you anywhere between 9.99-14.99.

I think record companies caused most of it. They only push these radio friendly bands that never write anything other than standard verse-chorus-verse songs, so everything ends up sounding the same.
I think people are tired of that shit, especially adults who have listened to enough music to know whats good and what sucks. Basically, record companies sell most of their music to 14 year olds, but most 14 year olds nowadays know how to pirate music and that's probably why they don't sell as much of their shitty CDs.
The solution? Better music.

Artists aren't to blame huh? He's talking like his band is bigger than the Beatles. Downloaders are to blame for downloading. This whole "oh I download to check out the artist so I don't ger ripped off" is a piss poor excuse. Wanna check out an artist before you buy the album? Simple, go to thier MySpace page or something.
And Brutal Judgement, stop being so naive. When people can get shit for free within minutes, then there's no stopping them.

Do you know how much it costs to produce a CD? About 1/10 of the retail price. Fuck em. Lower the prices and I'll start buying again.

Look at the what is usually at the top of the charts............pop music or what I like to call cross generation artist. It's crap like Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Carrie Underwood, Black Eye Peas, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and so on usually. They have a much broader audience that appeals to teenagers up to 40+ year old adults both male and female. Disturbed and many rock bands appeal to a male audience between 12 and 40. And in general only a small amount of that genre listens. That is all there is to it. Your just dealing with such a smaller audience and it gets even smaller when you talking about bands like Lamb of God, Dragon Force, and so on.
On DOWNLOADING...............It's pretty simple it is usually FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise you pay your $15 a month on Napster or whatever and then download software that removes the protection and bam its your on any media you want. Unfortunately most of your rock bands appeal to the same people that do the downloading. So reguardless of how bad ass you album might be its sales will always suffer from this.
Quality of an album has about 5% to do with the sales of the album.

What about you were such great fans for buying the new cd when it came out that we are going to re-release the hell out of it with 1 or 2 new songs and a bunch remixes or live or acoustic shit just so we can make a buck or two. Roadrunner is the worst and I think once record companies start to use their brains and put out a new cd for $9.99 and the deluxe version with dvd or extra tracks for $14.99 on the same freaking day they may see a few more spikes in sales.

He has a good point there.
I don´t understand why most artist´s/bands write 20-40 songs for an album and it takes them 3-5 years to finish it, instead of writing just 10 or 12 songs and have more time to polish them into top quality and release it in 2 years time, why waste time to be thrown in the garbage can when it´s only 75 minute´s that can make it onto a cd .

The problem stems from the birth of the internet and its concomitant absurd notion that music should be free. If you're so concerned about the quality of an album in advance, read a few reviews before you buy it. Talk to your friends who've heard it. Not necessarily proof of anything, I know, but that should give you a hint of what lurks on a CD. Do you get to watch a movie before you buy a ticket? No. Does anybody expect otherwise? No. If the movie sucks, everybody walks out of the theater going, "that sucked". Put a couple of those together, and nobody goes to your films anymore. That's the way it works. To claim some kind of divine right to steal based on the possible poor quality of the product is just indicative of the selfish and stupid age we live in.

cut right down to it, all the excuses for downloading don't mean diddly. Simple fact about human beings in this day and age, if we can get something free why wouldn't we? Downloading is rampant because its hard to not download an album months before its commercially available, in some cases, or just to save a few bucks for the bills or anything else. I'm not saying its right, but the saying 'if it's for free, it's for me' still goes a long way in the world.

Here is a thought, convince the consumer why they should buy your product. Put out quality over quantity. Legal threats have not worked with the public, you have to look at yourselves and change. Convince people to spend money, isn't that what your marketing people get paid for? One more thing if you want people to buy cd's stop raising the price. If people are not buying them at $16.99 why would selling them $20.00 make any sense?

Fillers are more of a problem for mainstream, pop artists. This is well-known in the industry. People like Britney Spears have teams of writers who concentrate on producing a few hits off an album; once the mark is reached they sell the CD. They would be crazy to put 10 hits on a CD; instead you spread them over 3 CDs and even accounting for fatigue and loss due to fillers, you still end up selling more CDs than if you had only released one.

Hey kirneh001, where do you see cds in the U.S. for $20-$25?? Major label cds list for $18-19 and outside of a mall or a very small Mom and Pop shop, nobody sells at list price. Most metal cds on indie lables list for $14-$17 and you should be able to get them between $11-$14. I was paying $16-$17 for cds 20 years ago so I think $12 a cd is a good deal especially when they have at least an hour of music on them. Even if there are a few filler tracks you still usually get 10 good songs if it is a good band!
I am not a big Disturbed fan and I do have all of their cds but I got them fairly cheap at Best Buy. I have my own cd business so I can get cds a little less but I buy well over 100 cds a year too!
Nothing wrong with downloading a cd to check it out but if you like it, support the band and buy the cd! Even if they don't make squat from the cd sale they need to sell cds if they are on a label if they want to get tour support or have any kind of budget for their next cd.
What I don't get is how nobody seems to collect cds these days. Ask anyone under 25 and they probably own less than 100 cds.
Most of us posting on Blabbermouth are metal fans (I would hope!) and most metal bands generally put out a good cd if you like the particular genre they are in. I usually try to find some reviews on line before I buy a cd if I have any doubt. Some bands I just buy regardless. Like the new Motorhead cd. I haven't heard more than a few samples but I will buy it because A. Lemmy is God and B. I have everything they have every released (official releases anyway) and they are not even my favorite band!
End of rant.
