METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Reviewed By TERRORIZER Magazine - Aug. 28, 2008
Stavros Pamballis of UK's Terrorizer magazine has just had an opportunity to listen to the new METALLICA album "Death Magnetic" in its entirety. His knee-jerk first impressions follow.

"If you could timewarp back to 1983 with a copy of 'Death Magentic' in your hands and play it to the spotty, longhaired brats who'd just finished recording 'Kill 'Em All', they would have no problem at all recognizing themselves in its epic song structures, jaw-dropping guitar work (all buzzsaw guitars and face-melting solos) and sheer whiplash-inducing energy. In fact, they'd probably be impressed.

That's right kids, for once, you can believe the hype: 'Your' METALLICA are back and they've brought their balls with them this time.

"The album is so complex, so riddled with stops, starts, breakdowns and solos that, much like '…And Justice For All' it is virtually impossible to digest in one sitting but a few questions can be answered:

"Is it thrash? Hell yes! At times anyway. Opener 'That Was Your Life' is the heaviest thing they've done since 'Battery' while 'All Nightmare Long' sounds like it was written by SLAYER. On the whole, the album feels like the missing link between '...And Justice For All' and 'The Black Album'. James' vocals, have something to do with this as he rarely uses the low growl of the early days, opting for the higher registers of the Bob Rock days.

"How's the production? Runs rings around 'St Anger', but that's not saying much. Very strong on the whole but the drums are a little too high in the mix and the dynamics suffer as a result. Recalls the Black Album at times but with a hint of 'Reign In Blood'.

"What are the highlights? Almost every song on this album is at the very least interesting. 'Judas Kiss' is an instant, moshpit-firendly classic while 'Unforgiven III' is the album's true epic ballad. Let's just say it blows both of its namesakes out of the water.

"Okay...any negatives then? Lars Ulrich. The guy's limitations are laid bare by the spectacular guitar work on this album.

"So, is it as good as the 'First Four'? Only time will tell... Probably not, but at least it sounds like it belongs to the same back catalogue as those albums. A METALLICA (written the old way) album through and through!"

All this "kick Lars out" sentiment is a waste of time. The fact is there are just some band members that are not expendable, meaning when that member quits the band is finished as well. Lars and James are examples of this as are Mustaine in MEGADETH, King Diamond in MERCYFUL FATE/KING DIAMOND, jon bon jovi, and, of course, Chuck Schulindiner in DEATH.

Haven't we all known that Lars has been a mediocre drummer from the start? Anyone that has seen Metallica live knows that Lars is not good at improvising his fills. Hell, most of the time I doubt he even remembers what fills he recorded... and this is coming from a true Metallica fan.
No band is perfect, you take them all with their lumps. But Lars's shortcomings were always more apparent than most other drummers. I never felt he had that solid 'metronome' timing about him. Just listen to 'Some kind of monster'for example.

This argument that floods this board about Pro Tools being used to "cheat" at playing music is about the dumbest thing anyone has come up with in a very long time. I see it hurled at DragonForce quite a bit. Say whatever you will about that band (or Metallica, or whoever), but it's completely asinine to claim that "So and So can't play fast. They speed it up in the studio using Pro Tools." So Slayer plays that fast, but DF uses Pro Tools to cheat. Not to be DF's bodyguard here, 'cause I'm not. It's the Pro Tools argument that's being used by ree-ree's that I can't take anymore.

Alex Lifeson has been making himself a better guitarist through effects for his entire career. What I'm getting at is the goofiness of the "Slayer can play fast but So and So cheats" argument. That´s what I always have thought and said here. Lars is the shame of the group, period. There are so many examples live (the `double´ pedal at the end of `One´, the start of the speedy part in `No remorse´, etc. etc.) The rest of the guys keep the level at least, and it seems they have improved and feel motivated again. Hey man, Lars has been, and always be part of the Metallica sound, what you said needs no discussion but we are talking about MOTIVATION. The others seem to have it, Lars simply doesn´t feel the need to have it anymore, and that is what keeps him so limited NOW. Why are people discussing his level? Don´t you think it´s coincidence? Suspicious, isn´t it? We don´t want to become better drummers than him, we don´t need to have the zillions of money he has, we just want a better Lars, a worthwhile Lars that is at the same level as the other guys, got it? He is a PROFESSIONAL PLAYER, ffs.

The guy has a great vision for arrangement ideas, and a lot of Metallica's songs and even some riffs wouldn't have been the same if it wasn't for his input. Additionally Lars is a marketing genius as much as he is a shitty drummer, without Lars Metallica's success wouldn't be possible. He is indispensable, essential for Metallica, so stop saying he should quit the band. He won't."

Agreed on all accounts.

In regards to the pro-tools argument, you are all truly kidding yourselves if you don't think almost every artists uses some form of studio 'trickery. It's called 'production and editing'. When you see an actor, any actor, in any movie, do you honestly believe that the acting sequence that you are witnessing was all done in one solid take? No, ther were many, and all of them were spliced and placed to best represent the performances demanded from the actor much in the same way that tracks are spliced and edited to best represent the performance demanded from a musician in an audio recording.

Live with it people, nobody's perfect but we all want the best possible product from any artist. That is why splicing and pro-tools are used.

Lars may not be the most technically proficient drummer around (although he had his moments on Justice) but he is crucial in the creative process. Specifically he has a lot to do with structuring songs, putting together and sometimes modifying the riffs that James/Kirk come up with. A members value in a band is not limited to their technical ability. People get to hung up on technicality, just because you are advanced at your instrument does not necessarily mean you are a more valuable player, or a better band. Example: Dragon Force are very technical but there songs suck. Slayer are not particularly technical but are one of the most respected metal bands around.

Without Lars, Metallica would never have been and without Metallica, who would have inspired all of todays great metal bands to pick up a guitar etc. Metallica have inspired more bands than any other metal band period.

Seriously, how much metal do you listen to besides Metallica? If that really blew your mind, go pick up the latest by Testament or Destruction. It amazes me how you'll follow Metallica's whole career, get into the early stuff, and never get into any other band of that genre. Radio stations are guilty of this also, they'll play "Hit the Lights", "RtL", "MoP", etc, but you'll never hear a band like Testament, Exodus, or Kreator get played on that same station; even though the styles can all fall into similar genres.

EVERYONE is AFRAID to tell his "Your drums, especially your snare don't sound good - and they are WAY TOO HIGH in the mix! Shut the fuck up, and listen!"
Unlike many others I think My Apocalypse is a decent song. Of course, it really suffers from the same issue as the other release. It is not an MP3 encoding issue. Most computer literate 12 year olds could fix that. How can ANYONE involved in a musical project, supposedly an expert, call himself competent. Death Magnetic ought to have been a stellar example of metal production. It ought to have set an amazingly brilliant example of how METAL albums should sound! It really goes in the opposite direction. Yes, I do want to hear the whole damn thing soon. However, it is really sad (but true) that ego has completly stifilled the co-operative purpose of the band - to make great sounding music. The "band members" all have CREATIVE INPUT - BUT CERTAINLY LOST CREATIVE CONTROL!

Just wanted to say that most of the people posting and busting Metallica's balls are probably still living with their parents and have never gotten laid. Go buy some clothes at Hot Topic and tell me how good the new ( place unknown shit band name here) CD is.

I'm sorry man, I was so pumped for this album but...Metallica is not getting my money with these two songs. They are just awful. I LOVE the first couple minutes of The Day That Never Comes, but then it goes to pure cheese ring out riffs. And what is with the God damn mix? You guys are fucking METALLICA! Fucking hire Andy Sneap or fucking Colin Richardson for God's sake. It's not like you COULDN'T pay a great mixer.

James sucks with his neo-vocals
Kirk plays solo just because he is lead guitarist
and Robert is fucking a good bassist... but not in Metallica...

"Opener 'That Was Your Life' is the heaviest thing they've done since 'Battery' while 'All Nightmare Long' sounds like it was written by SLAYER."

opinions are like arseholes everyone has got one. I can see why people are pissed at metallica and i can see why people worship the ground walk on. Metallica are damned if they do damned if they dont with the haters. What's got me fucked is why people who hate something so much log on, read the story and then voice their hatred towards the article. Do the same people do this to any sporting clubs/teams they hate on their page? I tell why they don't ,its because metallica bashing is so hot right now.lol. so is ac/dc bashing and any other mega selling band.

"Also, despite the Load/Reload era, Metallica (along with Pantera) helped to keep metal alive and kicking through the 90's."

You can not say that. Only if you lived inside a bubble buying 3 records a year ONLY THEN you can say that. This issue was brought here before and I posted a list of records released through the nineties and it was mind blowing to recall (even for me, I forgot) how many masterpieces were released from 1991 to 1999. Heavy, Death, Doom, Thrash and Black Metal. Underground was where it was at. As usual.

They gave St.Anger 1 out of 10, they ARE trustworthy.

"Okay...any negatives then? Lars Ulrich. The guy's limitations are laid bare by the spectacular guitar work on this album.

Lars...Lars....Lars...perhaps they should get rid of him?

Mediocre drummer at best, legendary band.

I bet Lars' playing is more inspired on St. Anger than on this one. It's not out of the question. On the three songs I've heard so far there's nothing innovative at all.

Well, the guy said it all. In a nice way, he sucks. They could find a better drummer at 99% of high school proms.

That´s what I always have thought and said here. Lars is the shame of the group, period.

We're talking about Larz who has NO legs not Dave Lombardo who can pull his studio work off in a live setting

"I know Lars is a mediocre drummer and all, but I didn't think his drumming was that bad on 'Justice,''

You´re right, he´s not been the most technical of drummers, he may play other roles within the band, but he has LOST level.

As for Lars, what can I say? His drumming skills are mediocre at best.

Live he sucks in a lot of gigs, because he is sloppy, he could be a great drummer if he exercised his drumming

It makes me sick to think of Metallicrap having a drummer banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee when they could have have any number of drummers that annihilate him.

t's fucking shameful that after all this time, Lars still continues to plaster his "ego" over and through every song.

I've heard two songs and I was not impressed. The songwriting strength of the old material just isn't there. There's some very token thrash riffs with some strange, country-esque vocals from James that we've been subjected to since the Loads. It's not really working in the two songs I've heard... but I will give the whole album a chance.

this is just more poor supermarket metal. has been since that awful day in 91 when the world realized how watered down metal really needed to be for the masses to abide. oh, how i remember the instant vomit reflex when i first heard that godawful "enter danceman" excuse for a song. but, at least sucking so bad at drums is very very painful, just look at lars face hanging on for dear life on that travesty of a absolutely lost and inherently unimportant trainwreck of his.

so defend it all you like, just dont call yourself a metalhead you country music loving, hot topic shopping, hair dyeing, shitsandwich eating, selfless programmed robotic consumerist hairdoing weak excuse for metalfan, you!

fuck its so obvious i cant even believe it. ppl actually defend this pile of completely uninspired sorry excuse for a copy of what once was. aaarrrgggh!

1. According to the website, they plan on streaming a new song every Monday until Sep. 12. Assuming they don't pull a fast one and use "Cyanide", that will be 5 whole songs available Monday before the release. If that isn't enough, wait until 5:00PM on September 12, then listen to the whole album online for free (which I'm sure it will be).

2. I listen to Anthrax, Testament, Death, Warbringer, Municipal Waste, Megadeth, and many other bands, yet liking Metallica makes me a poser?

3. Yes, Lars is a bad drummer. But he'll never be fired from Metallica. Now what could be interesting is if James and Dave Mustaine formed some sort of side project without killing each other. Get a drummer like Tempesta or Bostaph, a bassist (perhaps Jason Newsted if he's healed and willing), and possibly a vocalist.

4. Please stop typing "lol" after your own statements. That's like laughing at your own joke. And stop saying "tallica". It's two extra letters.

I have been a metallica fan for 15 years now. I like all of their albums for what they are. The earlier stuff is what I prefer to listen to. The Black Album was really hard to swallow at first, but after listening to it a few times it grew on me and I loved it. As for the Load & Reload stuff................well, by Metallica standards it sucked. I still listened to these albums over and over again and finally accepted them for what they were. Even though they werent the best they were still better than most shit playing on the radio at the time. When St. Anger came out I hated it. I had to listen to it twice to make sure I hated it. But thre IS some good stuff on that album. The shitty sound is what ruined it for me. No matter how many times I tried to like it the sound was just shit. From what I have heard on Death Magnetic so far I like it. I cant wait for Sept 12. As for Lars I agree he is a average drummer at best. What Lars brings to Metallica works and thats all that matters to me. As for all the bullshit that people talk about metallica my response is simple. If you dont like them dont listen to them. If you hate them thats good for U!! Posting negative shit just proves that you were at one time a fan. I'm not defending metallica, nor am I claiming to be a true "METALHEAD" just my opinion. If you dont like it thats ok with me. Oh and the new Slipknot album is BADASS!!
