METALLICA: Audio Samples Of Entire 'Death Magnetic' Album Available

30-second samples of all 10 tracks that are set to appear on METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic" are available for streaming by clicking on the "audio" links below: 01. My Apocalypse ( audio) ***You can hear all the above samples as one continuous five-minute audio file below.*** METALLICA has officially set Friday, September 12 as the "worldwide" release date for "Death Magnetic". The CD will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same day the album arrives in stores. The band is offering the record for sale in numerous configurations, ranging from a digital-only release to a deluxe "coffin box" that will come with a bonus CD, a DVD, a T-shirt, guitar picks and other goodies. METALLICA will play two budget-priced shows in London and Berlin to launch "Death Magnetic", including the opening show on September 12 at the new 17,000-capacity O2 World arena in Berlin. METALLICA also plays London O2 arena on September 15, with tickets priced at £5 ($9), according to Billboard.com. Proceeds from both shows go to local charities. The concerts will go on sale to registered fans only with tickets priced €10 ($14).

... is that Cyanide sounds noticeably slower in tempo than it's been when they've played it live. That's actually pretty disappointing, since I think the tempo they've been playing it at is absolutely perfect.

I'll check it out...if I can buy it for a decent price. I bought St. Anger, hated it, and am keeping it...so...I might as well try this one out too.

I'm a big fan of metallica and there are elements of this new stuff that hark back to the glory days but it's just not quite doing it for me. Everyone keeps saying that you can't expect them to keep writing classic metal anymore but why can a band like Testament deliver an album of classic thrash and yet arguably the biggest metal band of all time still struggle?
Answers on a postcard please...

Like one of those newer retro thrash bands. This is definately not the great return to form, the drums sond sloppy and hollow, the guitars thin and too dry. The lead is pretty mediocre and not very fluent. Definately not what you'd expect from the biggest metalband on eath.

Its pretty easy when all you have to do is chug and palm mute the e-string (in Testaments case). Since by all accounts these songs have like a dozen different riffs each, these samples really don't throw much light. But boy, does Cyanide sound a hell of a lot better on the studio version. And James' voice sounds great on everything we've heard so far. He doesn't sound exactly like he did on the old records, but that's understandable given his age. He does sound totally streamlined, mostly cutting out the "YEEAHYEAHS" and other annoying vocal tics. On the SKOM bonus scenes they show Het recording the vocals for All Within My Hands (which even some haters might admit is a good song) and Bob Rock says something like "You've found a new voice here". Hate to agree with Bob--who now clearly looks like the primary force in Metallica's decline--but he's right here.

I'm in no way a "fanboy" of metallica, as a matter of fact I'm probably in the group of people who think metallica hasn't released a good album since ....and justice for all. And yes I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some of you guys are just plain stupid. I bet the same people trashing metallica now were all over them back in the day. Stop being a bunch of fair-weather fans and just give the album a chance WHEN IT'S RELEASED instead of giving half assed reviews of low quality 10sec clips.
As for what I've heard so far, I think it's leaps and bounds better than st. anger, but I'm not in love with it like I was when I first heard puppets or justice. But it's a different time and I'm sure time has something to do with the way great musicians approach writing songs. I'll give it a shot when it's released and if I'm disappointed like I was the last time, oh well, I'll get over it, it's not the end of the world. What's the worst that can happen, I hand over my hard earned cash over to a bunch of MUSICAL LEGENDS. That's more than about 99.9% of the posters here can say for themselves.

Sounds like Metallica is back to me. Totally heavy, some sweet riffing. I like what I hear so far. I can only expect the full album will be even better.
I find myself being more excited to listen to The Unforgiven III then the rest of the album. I want to listen to all three back to back, that will be cool.

There's a lot of hate for death metal on here today. Not that I'm a big fan of it, but I don't think it's the figurehead of suckiness in metal. The truth is the majority of all metal in all metal sub-genres sucks. Take any sub-genre and you'll get a handful of really good bands, and then a load of really awful and generic ones. That's the way it works. The generic ones generate a commercial breathing space in which the good ones can shine, but they all suck for the most part. It don't matter whether you're talking thrash, glam, death, black, doom, classic, whatever - in any one of those sub-genres there's no more than a handful of really great bands and then a whole lot of ones you'll have forgotten about in 10 years time.

Bless you Rick Rubin. You tried, but they still failed to come up with something inspiring. I could give a fuck whether they return to their roots or whatever. Just show me the kind of inspired songwriting that made them stand out from the pack in the '80s. Or was that Cliff's influence?
At least it sounds like it won't be as terrible as St Anger. I sat through the entirety of that album just before just to make sure I hadn't missed something. Nope, it still fucken sucks.
I just want another Metallica album that I can enjoy listening to and own with pride. Surely that's not too much to ask for?

Let's face it...all guitar riffs were done by the GREATS - Zeppelin, Sabbath,Hendrix,etc. All of today's Metal bands are just polishing them or molding it with state of the art "Made in China" equipment.
Metallica is what it is. They ruled the world, they took risks, they got in trouble, they came back and all you guys that talk trash will either go out there and buy the album or download it quietly in your home (just to piss off Lars)
How many of you out there don't even know what Metallica was before the Black Album?
How many of you only started listening to Metal when Trivium showed up ?
How many of you hate Metallica because Lars spoke his mind with the whole Napster thing ?

Death Magnetic is just another representation of who they are and what they feel. And after watching Some Kind Of Monster - St. Anger makes perfect sense !!
Metal will always be here. There are bands that will stay true to their roots and still going on strong. There are others who will take risks because they can.
Thruth be said...if the Black Album hadn't been such a huge worldwide hit, Metallica wouldn't have taken the risk of doing Load, Re'Load and St. Anger.
Bands like Testament, Anthrax and others don't have such deep pockets that they can take that risk.
Different albums, different sounds but still recruiting new fans and I will still battle to get tickets for their shows as soon as they come out because they represent my youth and I'm not that old!!

probably a different production could have hlped, the music is not bad, just that the compression was kinda high, the guitar tone sounds too tight, needs to be a little lose and with that thump on the bass,, you know that kicks that you feel when you play the stereo really loud,,they need a production like the last albums from Testament or Arch Enemy, probably with a different production people would have reacted different,,,the song "The Judas Kiss" probably would kick more ass with different production! is a bad ass song !!

Nah. I'd say more like BlackLoad, with some of St Anger's fast drumming.
Some of the faster, heavier songs sound fun. I get all hooked and then the 30 seconds is up! Especially the first one.
Cyanide is still just plain boring.
this album will have some merit, as do they all, but the thrash days are well and truly over folks. Otherwise it would have as much in common with their old sound as the new Exodus, Death Angel and Testament albums.

Did not like TBA, hated Load, Reload, and St. Anger (but at least I listened to them, unlike most of the people posting here), but this album has me back. Sure, it has influences from the last 17 years, but I don't mind that. It is a modern Metallica, not an 80s Metallica. I doubt there is ANY metal band from the 80s making more versatile and heavy music than Metallica has on Death Magnetic.

I, the ultimate selloutica hater have to admit, My Apocolypse sounds decent, not great, but if this came out after the black album, they could have saved themselves alot of credibility. Even the first full song sounds good at the end, loose on the tones and the drums a little still but better than Shit anger. But Kirk does a little decending solo run on The Day... at 6:41,that sounds like something off Justice, I think it is Shortest Straw(love that solo but rehash!) and 2;41 of apocolypse does something familiar too.
Sorry to nitpick but truth be told, it tarnishes their legacy that they can't do it as well as their peers that they overshadowed in the 80's, and it looks really bad. Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, all destroy them now, and it has to be something they are aware of and think about. But this is still way way way better than I thought it was going to be, so at least they were going in the right direction.

imagine what gods you'd have been if you'd quit after black album.. but you just had to sell out and produce utter crap for another 15 years. thats why you irreversibly hurt your image and brand to the point that you'll end up like deep purple.
saw them (DP) live here a couple of years ago. they had an arena for ~5000 people. about 200 showed up. DP sounded awful at best, and no one applauded and started leaving halfway through. well done, this is your future metallica.

everyone bitched about st. anger which could have been a good album if the band worked their problems out, made the drums sound right and not have psychobabble bs for lyrics. So now we get samples of all Death Magnetic songs which are heavy as hell, some of the coolest riffs theyve done in a long ass time with some awesome solos(which was one of the things people bitched most about) and people still talk trash. I havent been this pumped up to buy an album in forever.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that. Personally, I'm very pleased with what I'm hearing and can't wait to pick up the new album. I haven't been excited about a Metallica album in 17 years. I remember waiting on line at midnight at the old Record World in town to buy a CD (they came in the cardboard covers around the jewel boxes then). I dug the songwriting on the black album, but always wondered where the balls were. Well, they got them back a bit with St. Anger, though I didn't like it, and now it sounds like it's coming back. I think will be a happy hesher on 9/12!

I' ll review the 3 songs for you according to my own PERSONAL taste.
TDTNC = starts good until the 4th minute then gets crappy due to bad arrangement
My Apocalypse = Crappy uninspired t(h)rash metal. Hetfield's vocals suck on this one. He can't sing like this kind of songs anymore. Listen to the new Destruction or Paradox album for the real deal.
Cyanide = mix of black album with load. boring and uninspired with a pretty bad solo.
That was it boys and girls, you can go worship your crappy band now.

Yeah, your opinion may be that the black album is good. However, I remember waiting in line at the record store until midnight to grab my copy with two of my bandmates back then.....and remembering skipping through the tracks in disgust driving back home from the record store. We were all let down pretty bad.
So Im going to have to say Justice was their last good album. Im sorry my tastes arent the same as yours.....actually my tastes arent the same as most people, cause I dont think Puppets is their best...

I think of myself as a true fan of metallica. I loved most of their records, and the ones i didnt completely love, i at least appreciated what the band were doing on them. I admire metallica for their change in direction on load, and there are some quality songs on it, not exactly metal songs, but fuckin great rock songs. Reload was a bit of a letdown, but it had Fuel on it for fuck sake! That is one hell of a fuckin song!! The unforgiven 2 aswell!!
Believe it or not, St.Anger was one of the most important records of the bands career. Just listen to the rage on it!! It actually reminded me of Kill 'em all!! Not musically, but in spirit. The band had hunger again. It was fast, mean and heavy as fuck.
In my opinion, i think this next record is gona have a lot in common with Ride the lightning. The purge that was St. Anger is out of their systems and now they can get creative again, they can get epic again. If u want to listen to a band with the same style of music thru the years, listen to slayer. Theres a band who is scared to experiment. Haha, in reality, they have only released one record in their entire carrer, they just split it up into a load of discs!!
Metallica are back. Theres a storm on the horizon people, and its called Death Magnetic....get ready...

Death metal rules... but if that's the only stuff you listen to then there are some serious issues with your taste in music. Not many of them seem original and we are once again coming to a period of over-saturation in the genre.
You can't expect Metallica to make a death metal album. You can't expect them to make something like their 80's albums either. What is the point to that? As a musician you need to grow and rehashing old shit and sounding the same all the time, like many other old trash bands, will never get you anywhere. You evolve or you die.... well... you don't actually die but you get reduced to playing state fairs and biker bars. Exibit A = I saw Exodus open for Megadeth in 04. The place was half empty til 'deth took stage. Exibit B = Take Slayer, they can pack a house, but do most people go to the shows to hear the new shit or the old stuff?
You gotta give Metallica credit for being able to write stuff that still sells and gets airplay. Shit, they'd sell a million copies of an album that's an hour of nothing but static! Call it selling out but every other metal band would love to be in Metallica's shoes. And as a side note, some of you said these clips sound like Opeth or whatever other bands... I betcha if you asked Opeth about that they would tell you that they owe their entire existence to Metallica. I betch they own all the old records. What Metallica did for the genre is undeniable. Every new metal band that goes out and plays a show owes a small thank you to Metallica for bringing metal to the masses. If they didn't break out in the late 80's, half of you would be headbanging to some modern day Poison and Winger clones. Metallica's old stuff is still the heaviest stuff played on the radio... well... besides Pantera I guess.
This album sounds awesome and I think the quality will be better on disc, like the iTunes sample of My Apocalypse. I will buy it and probably like it. I have hundreds of CD's! If I want to listen to some heavier shit I will do so. Metallica is Metallica and I don't want them to make "An Ocean Between Us", "Demigod" or "Now, Diabolical". Now THAT would be selling out!
