CRADLE OF FILTH Frontman Says New CD Is 'Most Extreme' And 'Most Melodic' To Date - Sep. 1, 2008
David E. Gehlke of Blistering.com recently conducted an interview with CRADLE OF FILTH frontman DANI FILTH. A few exercepts from the chat follow:

Blistering.com: First impressions of "Godspeed On the Devil's Thunder" is that it's possibly the most brutal and unrelenting CRADLE album to date.

Dani Filth: Absolutely. The thing I've been trying to explain is that it's the most extreme, but it's possibly the most melodic. Even though I'm screaming throughout the whole thing, musically, it's got this symphonic, grandiose [feeling], but brutal as fuck.

Blistering.com: Paul's (Allender, guitars) writing style has come to define the modern CRADLE OF FILTH sound. How's the working relationship between the two of you?

Filth: Paul's the core writer. You'll be surprised to know that the back of the album — the artwork you're going to love. It's the best artwork we've ever had. It's very deranged and symbolic. Imagine CATHEDRAL's and the artwork we're famous for. It's really, really cool. On the back cover, there are four of us. There's only four people on this record. The keyboardist (Rosie Smith) is a live member since she has her own career. Charles (Hedger, live guitars) has his own band now, so we wrote as four-piece: drums, bass, and an outside keyboardist who we call "Captain Keyboardist" who we've worked before and is fucking awesome and obviously, me and Paul. We're slightly stripped down, but it doesn't sound like it.

Blistering.com: What's the touring schedule shaping up to be?

Filth: December 1st is the beginning of our festival called "The Darkest Tour". It's us, GORGOROTH, MOONSPELL, SEPTICFLESH, and another band. The American tour is going to be seven to eight weeks. I think it starts around the 7th or 9th of January and it's us, SATYRICON and SEPTICFLESH. As a band, we've done, in our opinion our ultimate record. Everything that everybody thinks about CRADLE OF FILTH or thinks CRADLE OF FILTH should be is on this record: the lyrics, the artworks, and more importantly, the music. Because of that, we didn't want to shy away from anything. The ultimate thing we could do on this tour is a tour with DIMMU [BORGIR]. We've got GORGOROTH, SATYRICON, MOONSPELL…we're trying to get MAYHEM to come on the road with us because this American tour is going to be the first of many.

Blistering.com: What, a possible CRADLE/DIMMU co-headlining tour?

Filth: You got to be joking, co-headlining? We'll be the ones who'll be headlining. We're going to try to combine the essence and ideologies behind this Gilles de Rais thing because obviously, we're not going to be able to play the whole album. We're going to bring the stage show we usually have in Europe, not the same one, but one that's close. We have a new designer on board, so we're going to have a great light show as well as static stage production. America hasn't even seen Edwina Filth, which is our 13-foot long animated puppet. We've always had to ship her and she doesn't like long journeys. We want to bring a big stage show this time; we want when we come out for it to be an event and we want fucking great bands to play with us. We want to be upstaged because it will make us play better ourselves.

Of course it is. Why wouldn't it be?

Same story every time a new album comes out from any band.

For once I'd like to hear someone say "It's not as good as our early stuff, most people will hate it, but I think we did alright. We'll try harder next time though."

JUST FOR ONCE!

Personally I just wish bands would stop making claims like that all together. If I was in a band my simple response would be "We've worked hard on this album, we'll let people judge the result by themselves". End of story. I mean, what he determines 'brutal' I might actually think sounds like Britney Spears. I mean, doesn't Avril Lavigne make 'Rock Pop' music according to the media? Rock? Seriously, she's not rock at all. BUT, that's what some people say. So why do bands do the same thing? It's lame. As for the Dimmu comment, that was pretty harsh! I wouldn't tour with him simply for trying to make his band seem all 'better than thou'. Meh, my $0.02

Most Melodic and most extreme are at odds with out each out.

That is how music is polarized. Meldoic vs. Extreme.

I never listen to any bands hype, or promotional claims. I just know what kind of music I apprecited. Not in terms of rock vs metal but Classical vs. Jazz vs. Blues.

I usually try to by between a couple of dozen CD's a week, so that only puts me at only supporting the best 600 or so bands any given year.

Since 1994 I have had Cradle of Filth ranked number 1 on my wantlist, and Deicide ranked Number 2 on my wantlist. And for 2008 Cradle of Filth is the most anticipated album for 2008, just like for the last 15 or so years.

I never cared about this bands detractors, detractors by there very nature are strange and bizarre in the first place, myself if there is a band, I hate and want to avoid. I just avoid them outright. Music is subjective in the first place, and there is no accounting for taste, so this will be a instant first day purchase, and the detractors will be ignored once again for the 15 or so year in a row !!

LONG LIVE CRADLE OF FILTH !!!!!!!!!!

Cool interview. I like Dani's attitude. While their last album wasn't great, they have a few classics to their name - "Damnation and a Day" is fucking brilliant.

Cradle of Filth died years ago. Paul Allender is a great guitarist and comes up with some great stuff, but let's face it... Thornography sucked big time, and Nymphetamine and Damnation and a Day, while not being bad, were far from their previous works.
Maybe they'll do something nice this time, but that joke about Dimmu Borgir made me laugh. At least they've been consistant and all their albums are pretty good on their style.

To help you get your facts straight, Stuart didnt write Dusk! Nor did Gian. "Dusk" was already writen by Paul Allender, Paul Ryan and Ben Ryan... The band had a 3 person split around 94 or 95. New members ONLY replayed it and recorded Dusk. Thank you! Gobby twat!

Oh and for your info, its takes more than talent to make a band what it is and Stuart didnt have any qualities, not a personality, he was a bully, man, he didnt even own a bar of soap. Paul Allender, like it or not has always been a major backbone for guitars. (with help of course)

where it's due - Cradle do their own thing and I like thier attitude. Especially the distinctly British humour.

However I think Dimmu are in a different league to them, even if sales say otherwise. They've never put out a patchy album for a start. Plus, after seeing both live a few times Shagrath and his mob could blow Cradle off the stage if they were firing on all cylinders.

Conversely I`ve seen Dimmu about 7-8 times over the years and never been much impressed by them. Cradle are a far better live band. Although Dimmu are better suited to outdoor festivals than Cradle.

I`d like to *see* this interview though, I`d imagine Dani`s comment was tongue in cheek, probably comes across nastier written down. I`m looking forward to the new album, new song is great and the extra tracks on teh Thornography re-release were better than anything on the album originally.

Dani is an ass. I love his remark about co-headlining. So arrogant.

This seems weird to have Cradle and Gorgoroth on the same tour, even though it has happened before in like 99 or 2000. Still seems a bit odd. Septicflesh is a nice touch as well. Seems they want to tour with heavier bands now.

If he is serious and they get the almighty MAYHEM with them in the states, well all I can say is that Mayhem deserve headliner status because for one they've been around a lot longer and two, they are the godfathers of modern black metal.

Probably called Dani out on his egocentric sell-out bullshit. Being that dani's ego is taller than he is, he had a madonna induced hissy shit fit and threw him out. I wonder if Stuart saw cof on viva la bam hahahahahahahahaha.
