JOHN BONHAM, FREDDIE MERCURY Among Favorite Rock Stars Fans Want To Bring Back To Life - Sep. 2, 2008
The results of a poll conducted by the ThisDayInMusic.com web site — which asked its readers the question "Which dead rock star you would bring back to life for one gig?" — have been released. LED ZEPPELIN's John Bonham was voted into first place with 26% of the votes. QUEEN's Freddie Mercury came second with 22% and Elvis Presley third with 10% of the votes.

Bonnham died at age 32 after a heavy drinking session. Bonzo was found dead at guitarist Jimmy Page's house of what was described as "asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption." (40 shots in 4 hours).

The highest-placed female act was the U.S. singer Janis Joplin, who died from an accidental drug overdose in 1970.

The results of the poll are as follows:

01. John Bonham
02. Freddie Mercury
03. Elvis Presley
04. John Lennon
05. Jimi Hendrix
06. Kurt Cobain
07. Bob Marley
08. Jim Morrison
09. Johnny Cash
10. Jeff Buckley
11. Stevie Ray Vaughan
12. "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott
13. Frank Zappa
14. Ian Curtis
15. Janis Joplin
16. Bon Scott
17. Jerry Garcia
18. Phil Lynott
19. Karen Carpenter
20. Keith Moon

Maybe thats because it's their list and not mine.

If it was my list, you can bet your ass Kurt Cobain would not be on it.

Freddie was talented, & it'd be great if he were still performing, but from an output standpoint, he said all he was really going to say. Hendrix was just getting started for instance. Randy. Stevie Ray, they were just hitting their stride. Randy hadn't even busted loose, he probably would have done something on his own. I mean Jerry Garcia had completely outlived his creativity, was a walking coma, it was basically natural causes. That's like asking for Rose Kennedy to be brought back....Loved Bon, would have AC/DC reached the same heights with back in black with Bon? thoughts?

As great as Cliff and Chuck and Randy were, even THEY would likely put Hendrix or Lennon or Elvis before themselves. (BTW, I'd add Ray Gillen to the list for a reunified Badlands.)

It's something to exhibit greatness within a genre, even something as culturally narrow and "underground" as metal is/was -- but greatness to such a degree that changes popular music or culture.. there just can be no comparison in any objective sense.

I agree, these lists are stupid as fuck. But I'm glad Zappa made it on there. You pretty much know Dime, Hendrix, and Lennon would make it. But seriously, I was expecting Cliff and Randy Rhoads.

Randy and Cliff should have been on there, as well as Eric Carr and Randy Castillo.

Just a lot of talent lost so young, I'm sure we can all list a bunch.

I agree this is really dopey. But to play ball, I'd vote for Layne Staley too, coz Alice In Chains were the best band of the Nineties who I never got to see live, dammit. I know they're still out there with the new guy but...

Kurt Cobain
Layne Staley
Dimebag,
Cliff Burton.

Fuck the rest, they can stay worm food.

As for nirvana/metal, there are quite a few metal bands who have actually covered Nirvana songs. Machine Head and Fear Factory both immediately come to mind. Nirvana were actually a much deeper band than their radio friendly hits would lead you to believe.

Sounds good. The show I'd like to have seen was Alice with Kiss (when the latter's reunion was a big deal rather than a complete joke). Apparently Layne told the audience, "I see a lot of you are dressed up like Kiss. How come none of you are dressed up like me?" (at least the dude had a sense of humour, unlike the whining, overrated, selfish Cobain)

Also, among others on my list because it's getting a bit too extensive, I'd resurrect Ty Longley as I got a CD of his side project following the Station fire that I donated money to and while it's a bit out there for a few of my tastes he proved that he was a pretty accessible musician and more than just "the guy in Great White that died in that fire".

And while Nirvana kept metal from going completely soft in the 90's do they still justify allowing nu-grunge to flourish even if that was the fault of greedy record company execs looking for the second coming of Kurt Cobain to exploit afterwards?
