METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Reviewed By ROLLING STONE Magazine

Rolling Stone's Brian Hiatt has posted a review of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", at this location. He writes, "Half of 'Death Magnetic''s tracks are over seven minutes long, with song structures that are not so much "verse/chorus/verse" as 'long intro/heavy jam/verse/even heavier jam/chorus/bridge/wild solo/outro.' This feels like the right move for an era where Guitar Hero is the new rock radio. And it's not as if Top 40 stations were going to slip in METALLICA between CHRIS BROWN and the JONAS BROTHERS, anyway. These songs rarely feel too long: At their best, they combine the melodic smarts of METALLICA's mature work with the fully armed-and-operational battle power of their early days. The "muddled and bizarrely produced" St. Anger also got 4 stars and a raving review from Rolling Stone. Do they not read their old reviews???
I hope this album is good, but a gushing RS review actually makes me think it won't be as good as I hope. RS just needs to stop reviewing anything that falls into the broad Metal Genre. They don't like metal and don't know how to review an album for the metal community.

Will definately buy the BB version w/ Guitar hero trax. Cyanide and TDTNC are the weakest tracks on the cd, and even they are pretty good. All nightmare long is fuckin amazing!!!

It is as I have been saying: the file sharing is taking place at a furious rate. Seeder counts are growing larger and larger - will continue to do so as the day wears on.
So how will this impact sales? I think the coffin box thing is a good idea and, was created because the band knew the downloading would be furious. They had to offer something more than a silly cardboard sleeve alone.
In the end, I think they will sell quite a few copies of this record - more than the average band.
All is well.

Some of the songs sound all right and they're trying (desperately) to get back into what they had a hand in creating, but they are far from playing anything groundbreaking or anything to earn them "kings" or "gold Standard". If you like them...fine. Just stop acting like they are the be all, end all.
They're trying, but to me, it's too little too late. There's plenty out there that deserve more. Rolling Stone saying this is good and heavy should tell you enough. When was the last time RS gave a metal release a good review?

Of course Testament has been around for a while now but they are still unknown to 99% of the population. I've said it many times, I'm not the biggest fan of Metallica but almost every metal band today, including the ones listed above, owe their existence to Metallica. Remember, before Metallica broke through, the term Metal was usually associated with Poison, Winger, Warrant, Whitesnake and such...

I believe he was talking about the mass majority of people and media. Those bands you mentioned were some what big in America at the time (Maiden "Live After Death" proves this), how else do you think Metallica came to be? Or Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth? Sadly, the glam bands got bigger and MTV promoted the shit out of them, so many think that is what metal is. Thanks to those bands and that time, the term "Hair Metal" became the catch phrase for all metal.

This is a marginal step in the right direction PAST St. CRAP... But I honestly prefer Load or Reload over this album...
Shopping at Armani is METAL! WTF does Metallica know about being metal if they are shopping at Armani shops? Metallica isn't hungry anymore, they are too concerned about making money. Good thing Jason jumped ship after right before St. Anger.

I hear ya. Sometimes when I used to tell people about "a metal band from the eighties" they usually either thought they were hair metal or death metal in their ignorance! Sometimes I've even had people thinking theres no difference between power metal thrash and hair metal! - well that goes to show you peoples ignorance.
Anyway, as far as the new album. Stopped home at lunch (work 2nd shift) and got to hear some of it. I like what I hear so far. Will it surpass new Kreator? Hard to say. I will say its not a pure thrash album, more like some thrash, power/traditional, with a slight touch of the stuff on Load (undoubtedly)..

For those who like the album never forget that it is all about money, it was the right time $$$ to try to make some metal.So, do you remember when Load was released and they appeared in the cover of famous magazines wearing gay outfits and making gay poses and saying that they have never been a Metal band and they hate to be called so?Now Lars is saying "We are still Metal".

A co-worker of mine thinks that hair metal is called that because of the long hair that bands have. I try to tell him the difference between the genres and how all that came about. He's opened up a bit, but still doesn't get it. It's funny and annoying at the same time.

Don't care what the fan boys or the haters say... This album kicks ass.
I'm not a mental midget who just likes metal. I've liked everything from The Stones, Chili Peppers, Metallica, local bands, etc. I love metal. Maiden, Pantera, Exodus, Death Angel, Scred Rech, Anthrax... Don't give a shit what it is, if the music is good, it's good. This album kicks ass, and kudos to Kirk Hammet. He is on fucking fire. Some of his best guitar work since Justice. Funny thing is I think Cyanide is the weakest track on the album, yet it was the first thing they played live...

Anyone bitching about the sound... learn to use a EQ you fucktards. We used them all the time in the 80's to adjust songs to the systems they were being played out of... Same thing applies today except most people are too lazy or just don't understand that a good computer music player comes with an EQ... look for it, learn how to use it... I use it all the time for different CD's to get the sound I like.

Based on the clips I heard, this isn't the case at all. You can definitely hear the bass lines in the songs (5:20 Cyanide, for one)...I honestly don't know what the hell they're talking about here. Maybe they're referring to the whole Jason Newsted-era, but has RS forgotten about Cliff Burton? Metallica wasn't bass-averse then, and they certainly aren't now...
RS needs to stop pretending that they actually care about metal. They're no better than the idiots who awarded Slayer a Grammy two years in a row.

There is not one song on this album that is good, no worse .. there is not one song that isn't bad/unintresting.
I can not, and I am dead serious, understand how anyone can refer this album to any of the earlier work. It is just not possible.
There are a couple of good riffs, actually, which is more than you can say about st. anger, but they aren't used properly. They're diluted with a lot of shit riffs and strange arrangements which doesn't do them any good.
Everything sounds like a jam, the instrumental song is just a mess. Why not make good, proper songs?
If only the production was good, maybe the songs would sound less horrific. It would maybe forgive them a little .. but now!? The snare is too loud and sounds cut off, as well as the guitars. God, I really had hopes for this record!

well after a couple of listen... this album is ok... got to admit still a die hard fan of metallica... actually hoped death magnetic would sound sumething like AJFA or MOP ...
