METALLICA's ULRICH Downplays 'Death Magnetic' Leak: 'It's Part Of How It Is These Days'

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on the premature release of the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", via a French record store. A shop in Paris reportedly sold a number of copies of the CD this morning well ahead of its official September 12 worldwide release date — with illegal "Death Magnetic" MP3 files making their way online by this afternoon. During a guest appearance earlier today on "The Woody Show" on the San Francisco, California radio station Live 105 ( KITS 105.3 FM), Ulrich stated about the French leak, "Listen, we're ten days from release. I mean, from here, we're golden. If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. Happy days. Trust me. Ten days out and it hasn't quote-unquote fallen off the truck yet? This album has so poor songwriting that one can't manage to listes to the songs to its full lenght.Many songs sound the same, others have no structure and are just random playing, vocals are not good, drums are crap, riffs are generic, the songs don't make you feel anything other boreness, no feeling.

Here come the bashers who think they matter. I was slightly skeptical going in to this album, but let me tell you this album fucking blew me away, fantastic. The Day That Never Comes and Cyanide are probably the weakest tracks though, even though they aren't bad songs.

seriously man. what did you expect? these guys aren't fear factory, they are s.y.l. or anyone else. they are metallica, and to be perfectly honest, i don't think anyone expected them to comeback sounding this good after the "mess" st. anger kinda turned out to be. however even as sloppy as it sounded, as a band (taken out of the context of metallica, and the "golden standard" you all hold them in) you can't really blame them for being creative. maybe you don't like it, but let's face it. that's just a chapter in their lives. you, me, them, it simply doesn't matter. . .

It's alright, not bad, not great. The instrumental is my favorite thus far. None of that YEEAAAHHHY-YEEEAAAHHH on it, so it's my favorite track for Death Magnetic. Otherwise too much YEEEAAHHHY-YEEAAAH & OHHHHH YEAH! on it. If James would please just stop singing like that. Worth the free download if anything. Don't spend you hard earned cash on it kids.

So what the album was leaked in France already. I think it kicks ass. I listened to all the songs streamed so far, the video for The Day That Never Comes and live footage of Cyanide and The Day That Never Comes and its all kick ass. The album will do awesome. If they could do presales now, I'm certain it will be platinum. St. Anger in it's first week of actual release as well as presales certified it gold status. Presales alone made it gold and it was presold just hours before midnight of day of release on June 5th 2003, let alone that the release of St. Anger was jumped up from a Tuesday to a Thursday for the fact that it was leaked and songs were immediately being downloaded. If Death Magnetic were to do that, it would go platinum in minutes!

It's not Kill Em' All or Ride The Lightning but it's definitely leaps and bounds ahead of Black or anything after it.
I personally think "Suicide & Redemption" wipes the floor with Call Of Ktulu. The album will take some time getting completely used to but it's well worthy of a 7/10 rating thus far.

The album leak will shut the haters up once and for all. This album is awesome. i've been listening to it all day and it is amazing. Blows the black album away. Definitely number 5 in my book. One review (i can't recall off the top of my head) said it right, It's the missing link between ...And Justice For All and the Black Album. Haters, you've had your fun with st. anger, we all did, but i think you need to grow up and give credit where credit is due. MetallicA is back!!! we should all celebrate! hopefully they'll be back for good

I used to jam Metallica on the "Sony Walkman" cassete player around '84-'85 from "Ride" to "Master" era. Awww... You downloaded the album? I figured someone as "hardcore" as yourself would stay away from this type of stuff, seeing how you've been bashing it for two months.
Where's the rest of the cats that have been complaining about this album? Oh yea, their all sitting back, and taking a peek. Risking prison time over a band that died to them back in '86. Yea, to a whole lot of you the band has been dead, but you continue to buy their albums, download their albums, and you will do it again the next time around.
Its a never-ending circle of your own misery, and you seem to enjoy it quite well. But, I'm listening to the album as I type this, and in my own opinion its actually pretty good. But you see, I am looking at the musical side of it all, because I don't expect Death Metal, nor do I expect "Satan!" screamed four hundred times. I listen to the music because that's what I enjoy, I have my whole collection of Slayer & Testament that will get me through my feeding frenzy of death, and violence.
All in all. This is not their best album, because nothing will EVER defeat "Master Of Puppets", and if anyone expects that they will live a long sad life waiting for something they will never find. But this album is metal whether anyone likes it, or not. Metallica was the first of thrash metal bands, they helped influence two decades of evolution of many metal sub-genres including the well loved "death" & "black" metal. Metallica can do what ever they please, whoever they please, and everyones favorite hardcore metal heroes of today owe them everything for helping create the influence of their music. That's facts, Dave Lombardo, Chuck Billy, and even Dave Mustaine have all agreed of Metallica's influence to the world. All your heroes.

another pathetic charade of people on blabbermouth defending one side and one side only. I just listened to the album and there are undoubtedly parts that are absolute garbage (the end of the line and corny lyrics thoughout the album), but there are also a lot of parts that are fucking awesome. as a whole the album is mediocre and sounds like it could use a lot more work tweaking the riffs and the vocal melodies, but all in all its not terrible and its certainly a major step in the right direction.
ps: if you listen again, the judas kiss is a good song

was more interested in st. anger, as was all of the uk press, than this effort, at least after the whole load affair st. anger was some sort of return to form, the tempo was up, had double kick drums etc, bit of agro in the vocals, and the best thing no wanky guitar solo's!! best thing about that album it is the dvd that came with it, best way to to listen to that album..
no doubt i'll end buying the new one anyway, and give it a few spins on a decent stereo..

I for one am just gonna sit it out until 9/12.
I got into this band in the 80s, but I don't think they have released anything worthwhile since Justice.
As long as they play some thrash again on this one, I'll be semi-happy I guess. The Black album, Loads and st. Anger were all complete and utter shit, save for a few half-decent riffs scattered here and there.

So Rick Rubin tells these guys to imagine being in a batlle of the bands competition when recording this album and basically think in terms of never ever recorded anything that had any success..
I challenge all of you to listen to this album with the imagination that its a new band with their debut album and decide, instead of thinking in terms that this should or will be the next Ride The Lightning.
Look its not a bad album at all.. Its clearly 10 times better then anything they have put out lately.. It blows St Anger away. But then again anything can blow that album away.
New music (metal) these days is nothing special. Is this album anything special? No! But its clearly better then a lot of junk i have heard the last few years.
Its not a masterpiece. Its not terrible. Its just good. Nothing more nothing less.

Sure it`s better than St: Anger, but as with that abortion in disguise of a record there are no memorable songs! There's just riffs, and most of them not very good. And the arrangements leaves much to be desired. Quite honestly: I was bored stiff after about 1 minute listening to each song. However "My Apocalypse" and the second half of "The day that never comes" are quite good.

Really heavy with many speedy parts and great guitar harmonies and riffs. Very catchy also.
The haters are just stupid. I am not a metallica fan (haven't cared about them for 20 years and i didn't even like them that much in their golden years) but "Death megnetic" is a very good metal album.
Saying that this album is not metal is one of most retarded things i've ever read on the internet. The album has almost as much energy as the last Exodus album, for example. The Maiden touches in some melodies are also very cool.
Oh and the production is very good too.

That Was Just Your Life- **** out of *****
The intro was pretty evil for post-puppets Metallica. This song gets heavy, and you can actually hear dual bass drums, seriously... The song starts this album off on a good vibe with old school thrash riffs. Nice solo! But this also the introduction of a new era of Metallica. Finally, out of the "Load-Era"... Kinda... Will explain later..
The End Of The LIne- *** out of *****
This one I believe the first of "The New Songs" that were all over YouTube. The song itself if not so bad, but kinda a wimpy "good guy" riff that starts the song off, and then turns into some kinda thrash riff. It doesn't mix too well in my opinion for the most part (my opinion, mine). But the melodic piece in the middle rescued this song, but the Wah, wah to much! Not so bad, worth a listen, or two.
Broken, Beat & Scarred- **** out of *****
The intro takes the "Black Album" approach, then cranks into a very heavy crunch. This song grooves, but keeps to the crunch on all ends. Solo was very basic, but Kirk is getting that fire back, and this song lets you know. Wouldn't beat "Angel Of Death" in a fist fight, but Metallica shows some brutality again.
The Day That Never Comes- ** out of *****
Intro was a good idea, but not very well performed. A little too sissy for the rest of the content on the album. The "To Live Is To Die" riff saves this song by making you want to hear that sound again. If you've heard it once, maybe enough.
All Nightmare Long- ***** out of *****
Holy fuck! This is an example of the band power that Metallica still has left. The intro to this song is COMPLETE thrash, and the rest of this song is fuckng awesome. James Hetfield's growls for the first time in a long time. This song doesn't ring a bell for me on comparing to other Metallica tracks from the Past. Its different, and almost reminds you of a Mercyful Fate track, with a lot of influence of that NWOBHM sound returning. Enough with the wah, but the solo was decent, just over used wah gets in the wah... But overall, one of the best ever from this band.
Cyanide- **** out of *****
Okay, now everyone has heard this song on the internet, the live version. This song surprised me. I thought if this song sounded anything like the live version, they would be in trouble. But the quality is great, James heaviness shows again more than ever, and the solo is awahsome. Please, someone break the wah. Great melody though, nice musical tone. The middle softer part has alot of Mercyful Fate influence guitars, wonderful. Overall, you NEED to hear this song a second time, this song is rips.
The Unforgiven III- ** out of *****
The most disappointing track on the whole album. The piano, cello intro tho this song reminds me of "The Ecstacy Of Gold/Pink Floyd "Wall era mix", and made the intro to a great song. But the bad part of it all, was this song. This song musically had potential to be the best song on the whole album. Lyrically, this song could have been a classic ballad. But it really seems as James tried way to hard to vocalize this song, and it really had torn it in half. Guitars were classic Metallica, and since the song has an "Unforgiven" title I guess I'll give it ***... Just because of those two thing, and that doesn't do much... Really.
The Judas Kiss- ***** out of *****
This is a true combination of ever one of Metallica's influences before they were Metallica rolled into one song. A NWOBHM groove, a King Diamond vocal echo, Lemmy Kilmister attitude with influence Motorhead type lyrics, Thin Lizzy melody, and a Diamond Head style guitar solo (EXCEPT THE WAH!!! SHIT!). This is true Metallica, this is Metallica broken down to their raw meat. This song will only be a classic only to those who have followed Metallica through their whole career. "Load-Era" fans maybe outcast on this track.
Suicide & Redemption- *** out of *****
This is a weird one, the instrumental of the album. This song is actually not so bad if you get down to the meat of thing, meaning you have to understand, and appreciate the musical aspect of this song. No! Its not Orion, no song will ever be... Sorry!... But this song does one thing. This song shows you the musical power of this band, and the talents they do have. Really melodic, could be on a Dream Theater album (except Lars... Ha!). Not bad at all, give a listen.
My Apocalypse- **** out of *****
As I listen to this song, their is only one thing I can think of. If this song were made in 1982, with the 1982 equipment this would have been a song on the "Kill'em All" track list all the way. This is another one of those songs that can only be classified as a classic by true, historical Metallica fans. Anyone who is only familiar with "Puppets", and below would not understand. Sorry.
Overall in closing, this album is pretty impressive. But anyone going into this album believing Metallica died long ago will not enjoy this album unless they truly research, and understand the sounds this band has evolved through over the years. Some of these songs seem to modern, others seem way too late. But all in all, is it ever really to late? I don't think so. This album doesn't sound like "Justice" to me, it may have some influences, but that is only because Metallica made AJFA, and they can recycle whatever sound the have made if they wish.
But this album is different, the sound is way different. The influences of the past have finally caught up to this band, maybe not in all the songs, but most. Just don't walk into this album believing your going to hear "Battery" one thousand times, and make damn sure your updated on your Metallica sound all the way from the start before you check this album out to fully get whats up.
Now... The "Load Era" is done. You'll hear familiar sounds of course, but that age is done. I am a fan of Metallica, but I didn't hold anything back. The Unforgiven III sucked in my opinion, and I was damn upfront about what I though was not so great. I have that right because I have purchased every albums ever made by this band, and I will purchase this album also. So I would recommend this album to the old school fans, give this one a shot.

Its a decent album, nothing spectacular.The opening track is the best on the album,imo.The 1st 6 songs are quite solid but the next few are pretty weak.Unforgiven III is the worst track on the album,hands down.Towards the end the last 2 songs are kinda good.The instrumental is pretty decent but ain't no Orion/Ktulu.My apocalypse is a good album closer.
Overall: I'd say 7/10.

the songs on DM are too long, too overly complicated & hetfields vocals are too affected. can't he end a sentence without doing that stoopid YA! shit every time? after all the 'lack of bass' controversy in the past they now have one of the best bass players on the planet and do they let him shine on this album?......no. i guess if you have an uninspiring drummer then you get uninspiring bass playing. kirk's solos sound like MOP outtakes. waste basket here it comes...

This is, without a doubt and without the "oh St. Anger was a Metalica release we should feel sorry for it", their best thrash work since The Black Album. Note that I actually do like a collection of Load era songs, but I'm glad that they only did two albums full of that music and didn't continue. Of course I love thrash Metallica the best, and this album, to me, is their "Christ Illusion". Its an album with some good chops, but can't be compared to their classics.
A side note, "My Apocalypse" sounds alot like Cult. The machine-gun-lyric-fire reminds me very briefly of the chorus to Cult.
So here is where they stand now.....
1. Master Of Puppets
2. Kill Em All
3. Ride The Lightning
4. And Justice For All
5. DEATH MAGNETIC!!!
6. Garage Inc
7. Load
8. The Black Album
9. Reload
10. St Anger
In short, its better than the 90s, but not quite up there with the classics. Best songs are without a doubt All Nightmare Long and My Apocalypse.
This is gonna be a good promotion

I have just stolen a carton of 'freshly' squeezed orange juice from my local store and I just don't like the taste - it's just not up to the standard I desire. It's outrageous. The more I think about it - the more outrageous it becomes.

You hit my nails right on. Although you don't get so many Slayer haters as you do Metallica haters (just a lot of King haters), both bands are essentially in the same boat with where they are at their careers (but Slayer has a better drummer, props to Lombardo)
Just they both did different pathways (Metallica went blues-metal, Slayer went Nu Metal), released one unlistenable album (I hated GHUA so much, but not as much as I hated St Anger), and then released a very well worthy comeback album each.
My picks for the best albums of 2008:
-The Formation of Damnation
-Watershed
-All Hope Is Gone
-Death Magnetic
-Conquer (such an underestimated album, probably because Max is still with his brother, and RR chose to promote All Hope Is Gone over this one)

The album has kicked my ass so hard that the constipated shit that was "Load to St.Anger" has finally been pushed and nipped from my slightly clenched butt cheeks.
The guys fucked up for a while, high on cash and hair replacement products (just like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin did after 4 albums) But thank God (or Satan) that on this album at least, they've dusted off their Armani casual wear and replaced them with Doc Martins.
The new album could end a prison siege armed with only a Towel and a Bokon Stick.

This album is as close as Metallica are gonna get to a sweet album, and they do it pretty damn well in my opinion. I mean, look at how many bands release shit albums but are considered awesome bands:
Black Sabbath have released nothing but pure shit (with the possible exception of the two Dio albums) in the past thirty years.
Iron Maiden stopped caring after Seventh Son
Slayer hopped on the Nu metal trends with Diabolus and God Hates Us All (which was a terrible album)
Megadeth have basically blueprinted Metallica's career with a two year time delay until Mustaine broke the band up then reformed
Anthrax just sucked with John Bush and this new guy, and no one try to prove me wrong.... Belladonna = Anthrax
Machine Head gave us two extremely shit albums
And Metallica have given us one extremely purged album... but Death Magnetic glimmers in comparison, and even gets the opportunity to be named their best since Justice
And if you think that this sounds nothing like Justice, then you never liked Metallica

It's a hell of a lot closer to their old sound than anything they've done in the past decade. Given their age, health, attitudes, and change in views over time, this is as close as we're going to get to it. They could have easily gone out and done another St. Anger style album, people would still have bought it, and we'd have had yet another crap album. Instead they actually put in effort, made the right moves, and came up with an album that kicks the crap out of 99% of the stuff released today.

I don't see how anyone can honestly say that this release can stand toe to toe musicianship-wise and/or songwriting-wise to any of the aforementioned releases.

this album is a PERFECT mix of thrash metal (about 70% of the album) and heavy metal/hard rock (about 30%)!
You can hear ideas from almost entire Metallica catalog - from "Ride the Lightning" to "St. Crap"!
I lost my hope in Metallica from "Re-Load" and I never thought that this day will come...
score: 9/10

This isn't modern metal, as you claim. If anything, it's a band playing what they were playing back in 1983. You see, musicianship has really upped the ante in the last decade or so and Metallica can't rehash the same half-ass polka or 2/4 beats with lackluster riffage like you could from Kill 'Em All. Basically, Metallica doesn't even know what heavy metal is anymore.

I like Unfogiven III. It's very different than the rest of the album...and, the other two unforgivens but, I think it'll be a grower... I like the lyrics alot. It rounds out the "trilogy" quite nicely story-wise, I think, too...

All those bands are good, and innovative, but doesn't mean they don't copy and build on other bands.
As for my band, we sound like Metallica, but also Exodus, Anthrax, Sacred Reich, Death Angel, etc. We are heavily influenced by 80's thrash, and to an extent even hard rock bands like old Aerosmith. James in my opinion will always be one of the best rhythm guitarists...his right hand is deadly even though his songwriting abilities have waned over the years.
Dude, Lars Ulrich is one of the worst drummers in metal, and a band as big as Metallica should have a drummer much more capable than the shit he's doing. Even my drummer can play circles around him and we aren't even a signed band.

I hope this return to some thrash doesn't end here.
If there is one track I'll be skipping, it will be Unforgiven 3.

People download everything they can... its 2008. Im glad to see Lars chilled out about it. After St. Anger... diehard fans are a click away from hearing an actual badass Metallica CD. They are not gonna wait for the actual release. Just buy it when it comes out and support the band. Ive never seen Metallica yet but i think its a good time to. They are back and kicking ass. Anyone who even says Death Magnetic is like St. Anger is nuts. I love bands like Testament (just saw them at Metal Masters) but theres something about a kick ass Metallica song that blows so many bands away especially in 2008.

I think my problem with this thing is that my expectations were somewhat lofty before I heard the album. Lars still needs to have his legs amputated and their songs are seriously lacking, but there are worse albums out there. After the initial shock wore off, I'd say that it's not TOTAL crap...just upper echelon crap. Kind of a D- instead of an F.

Everyone loses with these leaks. Metallica did a pretty cool thing by making the music available to listen in an attempt to help you assholes do the right thing and not steal it. Guess it didn't work. What's really funny is that this site is owned by Roadrunner. Roadrunner just got fucked out of a number 1 with Slipknot, and you can thank downloading for it. It will be really interesting to see if they lose sales because there are way more people (at least on BM) who love the album versus people who dislike it. I don't think it's gonna make a big impact; they'll still go double platinum at least.
I think the haters make the mistake of talking down to people who like the album when they shouldn't. Different strokes for different folks. However, the fans shouldn't get their panties in a bunch when someone is critical of Metallica either.

So far I am finding it to be their 3rd or 4th best album of all time. That was Just your Life, All Nightmare Long and Broken, Beat, Scarred are better then any song on Justice other then Blackened and One, better then all of the Black Album, better then alot on Ride the Lightning....To say anything different is just pure stupidity. Here's how to look at the album. Let's say that tomorrow, you found out the Pope listens to metal. You'd say, "Holy shit, the Pope likes metal!" Now, he's musical tastes aren't too great. He only likes crappy black metal (I'm not saying all black metal is crap). But just the fact that the Pope listens to something kind of like what you listen too is awesome.
So yes, there are newer bands that have released better albums. And certaintly ones that have made heavier albums. But Metallica getting within 10 miles of where they used to be? It's exciting.
And the album's pretty decent. Although I didn't think "All Nightmare Long" was that great.

I've listened to a few of the songs repeatedly. The whole thing takes too long for one sitting. Yes, there are very noticeable protools edits. Yes, it's clear that the drums are too high in the mix. Yes, the snare really hurts many of the songs. Yes, Kirk Hammet is very active, but not very creative - and hasn't grown much or expressed much depth as a musician in about 20 years. Of course, Lars has been fearful of the ride symbol for many years. Guess what? Even given all these negatives, I like the album. I never expected the impossibe; that is to say Master of Puppets 2, so I haven't any regrets or dissapointments. I will say without question that I didn't care for anything Metallica did following And Justice. Even the Mercyful Fate covers were not well played.
Death Magnetic to me is a step in the right musical direction. As with many albums, not every track is going to blow you away. For example, I love All Nightmare Long and the opening track. There are parts of other songs I really like too, but with the length of the songs some repetitiveness sets in. The instrumental is painful to listen too - simply too long without picking up the pace or variations. Over all, it's refreshing to hear the metallic direction of the songs - properly distorted guitar riffs with lots of changes. Yeah I know there's cut and paste work (noted earlier), but it sounds good. Many listeners have complained that the songs (and the CD) goes on and on - never ends. I don't see this as a negative - you can if you want to. There's no need to listen to the thing all at once. There's a lot going on, and I enjoy it a few tracks per listening session. I have posted a lot of nasty shit about Metallica before - and it was appropriate. This time I will not say it's all amazing, but I will say I think the band did the best they could with what they knew, and had to work with. I know they don't give a fuck about what their critics have to say. Lars isn't going to change or grow for anyone - neither is Kirk. So what - they don't have to answer to anyone but themselves. I know a lot of long-term fans (25 years +) will hate this CD; some will love it, some will like it. Me, I love some of it. ..... Anyway, there will be strong agreements and disagreements with what I've written. Again, so what. Everyone is right. The only change they have ever made, or will make to the lineup is the bassist. They've made a better choice this time - he's very good. What happened with Jason happened. We all know Cliff was the greatest, and that part of Metallica died with him - an irreplaceable part. It's not just the band that's different - it's that each member is and will be forever changing. There it is - perhaps too philosophically - but Metallica is what it is (and who they are) NOW. They will NEVER be as they were 25 years ago or 5 years ago. That is impossibe. I like what they are NOW and what Death Magnetic is - a good album. Love it or leave it. Peace.

I heard a rumor that the ladies in Papa Roach moved back the release date of their lame-ass gay album a couple of months because it would coincide with Death Magnetic's release date. I wish nu metal would just die already.
