METALLICA: Six Full 'Death Magnetic' Songs Available For Streaming - Sep. 5, 2008
METALLICA's official web site is currently streaming no less than six full songs from the band's forthcoming "Death Magnetic" album. The tracks, which were all premiered last night (Thursday, September 4) during the broadcast special "Metallica: The World Premiere Of Death Magnetic", are as follows:

* "The Day That Never Comes"
* "My Apocalypse"
* "Cyanide"
* "All Nightmare Long"
* "Broken, Beat & Scarred"
* "The Judas Kiss"

You can also listen to the songs below.

"Metallica: The World Premiere Of Death Magnetic" was hosted by FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins and was broadcast live from METALLICA's headquarters in San Rafael, California. The 60-minute program, which aired on stations across the country, featured James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo giving fans an exclusive look at "Death Magnetic". Check out photos from the event at this location.

Several copies of "Death Magnetic" were sold early at a Paris record store on Tuesday (September 2), which led to the entire album being leaked online within hours.

Due on September 12, "Death Magnetic" will also be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock the same day that the record is released.

METALLICA will play two low-dough shows in Europe to celebrate the CD's release, in Berlin on September 12 and London on September 15. Tickets for both are priced under $20 and open to fan club members only.

The band will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.

"The Day That Never Comes" (official video):

"My Apocalypse":

"Cyanide":

"All Nightmare Long":

"Broken, Beat & Scarred":

The first three songs on the album are the best, after that it's hit or miss.

Unforgiven III is an abortion.

Suicide and Redemption is pretty pointless other than the nice middle section

Other than those two it's very solid, which is pleasing to the inner fanboy in me, it isn't anywhere near album of the year, but it's generally a pretty fun album.

But only just barely. This last couple of years has kept me on the edge of my seat. Will they fail again? Or will they defy the odds and come back with an ultra awesome comeback record? Definately the latter, but I have to admit not by much. This barely tags along to The Formation Of Damnation, but its definately in league with United Abominations (which I thought was a killer album).

Definately the best tracks being My Apocalypse, All Nightmare Long and The Judas Kiss. The only track that doesn't seem right is The Unforgiven III. Its a sweet track, and if it was released in the Load era it would have been a classic along with Bleeding Me, but it just doesn't suit the mood of this album.

Overall, my grade for Death Magnetic is a B, which has just tempted me to preorder the coffin boxset!!

sounds like they're trying too hard. metallica used to be cool, they used to be fun. its like they want to get that back, but its just overkill, too much everything. they used to play, record, get drunk and then play again. nowadays they're just too busy getting at your money.

the problem is.. if you go and listen to DOWN - NOLA or dOWN ii, you would think that anselmo did it...

there is a and justice for all vibe through most of the album, but still the st. angers emptyness

overall i like it.. it´s fine... not outstanding

I think that the problem here with some people is that, metallica were so big and fabulous that the expectations are on the top level.

And if they don't reach that level that people want from them... it causes disapointment, mainly because of the expectations created...

if we try analize metallica, post 91, it's good, before it 91, it's not near.

i'll maybe buying it it doesn't come with all those dumb things all arround. i just want the cd, and the booklet...a normal cd.

"Death Magnetic" is actually the first Metallica album I consider to buy since the "Black Album". But shit is like 78 € on vinyl (??!??), ok it´s a "special edition" consisting of 5 12" vinyls & shit, I don´t need that. Hopefully they release a basic LP version as well for a reasonable price.

I guess that Lars isn´t as upset as he should be for the leaking of the album due to the "Special" & "Special-Special" etc. versions of the album, since those fuckers will bring him his money to buy art & paintings.

the christmas tree or your kill em all copy, I guess.

Why should Mustaine kick himself. Because he can't believe how much cut-and-paste the new 'tallica sounds, or how much filler riffs and non-existant vocal lines plus a shit production the former "gods of metal" have got out?

Sure, it will sell fucktillions of copies, there are some of their best ideas since 91 on it, for example, the harmony part in end of the first song. But they don't deliver the creativity in metal they used to, just like Megadeth.

IMO Megadeth have produced two great albums post 92, which is Cryptic Writings and The System has failed. Metallica hasn't offered shit besides a good cover album and a solid reworking of their old songs in symphonic fashion.

So it's 2:0
Everybody who takes music and musicianship over sales numbers and a brand name won't doubt that.

They both are mediocre nowadays.

I AM A SHEEP BECAUSE I LOVE THE NEW METALLICA RECORD.

hahaha... I'm retarded.

Yeah. It's fantastic, aside from "The Day" and um... Suicide and Redemption (this song played an INSTRUMENTAL part in my becoming bored and moving on to the next song - gets repetetive and is kind of...ho hum...). Those are the only two tracks that I will skip over on a regular basis. 6 out of 10 songs ("Life", "Broke", "Nightmare", "Judas Kissy-face" "Apocalypse" and "Cyanide") are outstanding in my opinion.

I had trouble with The End of the Line 'cause I was so used to the version they played live two years ago (and the arrangement is more of a mess than other songs), so it was a bit confusing. Will have to give that one a few more listens. The Unforgiven III is a really good song (far superior to #2), but like many other folks who have heard it, I agree that it feels completely out of place on this record.

Final Verdict: 8.5 out of 10. They lost one full point for putting a song like "The Day" on a record at all and scaring me into thinking that's what the record would sound like since it was the first single. And they lost another half a point for confusing me with The End of the Line.

They should've just left "The Day" off this record all-together and instead replaced it with the 11th song that they had to omit due to time constraints. Whatever that song was, I'm sure it was better than "The Day".

Hob nob the job slob, always...

I've been a fan of Metallica since '83, I've seen em live over 30 times, and I've been excited for every single album release since the beginning.

The anticapation of hearing new music is awesome when it leads to getting what you want. Along the way, some of their releaees have disappointed me, particularly when Load came out. At first I felt completely betrayed, but over time I came to realize that it's actually a decent album, it's just wasn't a "metal" album. The same with Reload. Both decent albums, but not my cup of tea. So be it. I actually really liked St. anger, shitty production aside. I was just happy that it looked like Metallica turned the corner and was leaning back towards less radio friendly music.

After hearing DM for the first time, I can honestly say that It was the most satisfying listen i've had of new Metallica material in over 20 years. The album is not a return to form, but a great mix of old and new. What more can we expect? I don't want to hear MOPII anway. I want to hear something new and exciting, and DM fits the bill. It was worth the fucking wait!!!!

metallica was a great band back in the day...but always a little overrated. they made up for relatively inferior riffing and soloing (as compared to megadeth) with atmospheric touches, time changes, complex structuring, high quality lyrics, and operatic stuff.

but REAL metal fans knew that megadeth was superior.

That last line of yours was one hell of a sweeping statment – when did Testament, Exodus and Overkill put out albums that better Master Of Puppets or even Ride The Lightning? I'm not taking away anything from those bands but did I miss something? Sounds like you just dislike Metallica plain and simple but they raised the creative bar for US metal in the eighties.

The only difference is Ballzworth is the older one & "slightly" more mature & original with his thoughts & material.

Forget stacking the new shit up against 1984 or worrying so much about the mix. It either moves ya or it doesn't.

Not sure how this release is any different than Christ Illusion vs. Reign in Blood other than Slayer didn't have a momentary lapse of reasons quite as much as Metallica in the 90's.

Is it Slayer? Yah? Isn't anything fresh, new & moving? No

It is Slayer. See ya boys...

Anthrax - Fistful of Metal/We've Come For You All
Megadeth - Killing Is My Business..../United Abominations

I have a feeling that if Metallica actually put out a "MoP II" all the haters would hate because.....you guessed it, it would sound like they tried to rewrite an album they already did. There's no pleasing these people. Give this band credit for never trying to do the same thing twice. Remember the Load(s) were a double album just released separately. Does 90's era Metallica stack up to the 80's?? Hell no. It was good, but different from what people liked when they started. The f'ing band doesn't even think the 90's era stuff as the strongest material, but they aren't apologizing for it either. The new stuff sounds good and is a mix of old and new, but a time warp to the past is asking a lot from this band. They will never do it and really, what TRUE fan wants that??

But I'll give 'em credit on Death Magnetic. The black Album, Load, Re-load and St. Anger still suck, however, and I won't forgive them for those albums, but I will tip my hat to them having heard all of Death Magnetic. This was Just Your Life and Judas Kiss are stand out tracks and I feel the album growing on me. This album should have been made years ago. I have to admit that I have some respect back for Metallica. At the same time, this isn't the best album I've ever heard and not the best thrash album of recent times, but a good release none the less from Metallica.

Are they going to go back to sucking now since they proved they can still make thrash? Any bets?

Any one who recognizes my name on this board have been well aware of my Metallica bashing even up to the the release of Cyanide and The day that never comes, Having Heard the whole album at least twice now, the songs make sense now given the background of the rest of the record which contains better songs. As Much as I bashed Metallica in the past and expect to bash them in the future, I am content with Death Magnetic.

For those that live in a cave and haven't heard the leaks on line, I can firmly call Death Magnetic a thrash album and I am happy to admit that I was wrong when I say that couldn't make a new thrash album if they tried. They tried and made a GOOD thrash album. Like I said, It would be better if the guys still had the aggression as the old days, but given that these men are older now, I give them credit for eve attempting it. Again, I'm not blown away. Death Magnetic is not the best release of the year, but MILES better than their recent releases.

I am more than happy to admit I was wrong, but the question is, what's next? Any bets they will return t the easier to play Load/ Re-load era material next having proved they could put out a thrash album again? That's my guess, What I'd like them to do is to put a better album than Death Magnetic with even more aggression, but I don't know how likely a scenario this will be.

track 2 the end of the line 9/10 somebody had commented on here about the verse riff reminding them of a pearl jam song.. sounds similar to the even flow riff by pearl jam i heard that to.
track 3 broken beat and scarred 10/10 cool tune
track 4 the day that never comes 9/10 like it just feel we have heard this a couple
6.5/10 musically cool just cant get past the vocals and the cheesiness of the lyrics and the song title itself
track 6 cyanide 7/10 songs allright listenable anyway
track 7 unforgiven 3 0/10 this sucks totally pointless
track 8 the judas kiss 8/10 love the riffs in this one
track 9 suicide and redemption 0/10 sucks really should been an actual song on here maybe james just didnt have anything vocally 2 put to it
track 10 my apocalpse 10/10 reminds me alot of slayer on this one bad ass track

all in all i dug that was just your life.. the end of the line.. broken beat and scarred.. the day that never comes.. the judas kiss.. my apocalpse.. all great songs.. cyanide & all nightmae long are okay tracks unforgiven 3 & suicide and redemption suck
i give this album a 6.75 out of 10 better then stanger heavier then load and reload and the black album but not as good as the black album or load ... i put this one along side reload as far as digging about 6 overall songs solid release good return to form for metallica

have you actually tried using an EQ? I boosted the low and cut some of the mids and album sounds great. Funny thing is, on Testaments new one I had to do just the opposite to get a decent sound...

Most CD's are mastered to have a balanced sound across most stereo systems, but what sounds good on a pair of head phones won't sound the same on a decent pair of stereo speakers. That's why there is an EQ. Add in the quality loss and clipping that is done with compression, EQ is even more important...

i am a 40 something year old who dosent comment much on blabbermouth but wanted to comment on what use to be one of my favorite bands... i dont like james vocals at all on this or st. anger. i dont like the arrangements at all.. the songs make no sense. they are all over the place. i feel like i'm in band practice w/ them just jamming/ no particular song. i dont care if this has more guitar solos/heavier riffs or not over st anger . it dosent make it better if its all over the place, to me.......seems some people are just sooo happy its heavier albums than load and reload and it has guitars again... as bands get older and the years go by writing changes. it just feels as though they were trying to prove some point that they can be really heavy if they want to . my apocalypse sounds just like a slayer song not metallica !! why ??? the day that... , just drags, very boring. then it sounds like it goes into a totally diff. song( jam) for 5 min. !! why ??
i wish they would just go back to writing releases like the 1st 3 albums and stick within those borders because this experimental stuff is just crap. i can see them all in the studio though , saying stuff to each other like " oh wow james, that sounds cool " but they have lost touch, IMO.

When "The Day That Never Comes" was posted first here on Blabbermouth it probably was about 70% hate for it. With the new songs more love is being given.

Metallica can NEVER do something as groundbreaking as they did when they were coming up. Timing is a HUGE part of the industry and they were exactly the right band at the right time. Now it's really how much you like them. I am a huge fan of the style of rhythm guitar and song stylings that James does so I like pretty much every Metallica album, even St. Anger. I do understand why people hate though. Black, Load and Reload weren't the same and St. Anger had a shitty sound (although I looked past that for some pretty damn good music). This one isn't like MOP or RTL BUT I like Hetfield and that's good enough for me even if it's not enough for the haters.

Oh yeah, Inflikted is my fave of the year so far, but again, I like pretty much everything Max does.

I don't get your argument on the arrangements. While I think the songs don't sound like AJFA, MoP, they are arrangend very similar to songs of that era. Hell, Cyanide is about as close as you can get to Master of Puppets structure wise. Intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, interlude, solos, verse, chorus, end...

I've listened to this a few times now, and and am enjoying it a lot. I know what parts are coming up where, which I still can't do with St. Anger. Tunes are getting stuck in my head on this album, which is a good thing.. for me. Its a good album.. not the best thing I've ever heard, but it's something I will buy.. in fact I can't wait to get the CD so I get the full sound...
