BLACK SABBATH's GEEZER BUTLER Slams 'Hypocrite' SARAH PALIN
- Sep. 5, 2008
|
|
Legendary heavy metal bassist Geezer Butler ( BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN AND HELL) has issued the following update: "Thank you all who came to see the Metal Masters tour. It was a pleasure touring with such great bands and friends — JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD and TESTAMENT, and their respective crews. It was great meeting everyone who came to the meet and greets after the shows. "Now back to reality. As you may know from my web site and lyrics, I am pro all life, not just unborn fetuses. I don't understand people who say they are pro-life, but then support unnecessary wars and the disgusting slaughter of animals for sport. I respect people's freedom of religion, but I absolutely abhor hypocrites. Which brings me to this horrific video [see below] of cowardly bastards in airplanes, shooting wolves for so-called 'sport,' and the hypocritical politician [referring to Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin] [she's supposed to be pro-life, remember], who allows this cowardly act to take place in her state. "I know lots of people who hunt, and I enjoy shooting at my local gun range, but I don't know, nor would I want to know, anyone who gets pleasure from this disgraceful behaviour. God/nature has created a beautiful earth, and populated it with beautiful creatures, and I believe that all life is miraculous. Why do politicians [royals included] enjoy killing so much, and treating those miracles with such contempt?"

Butler is right. Full stop. This is not hunting, this is killing without respect and any risk.
And if Palin gets she job, every country outside the US will become worried. Which means that the US will be worried some years later as everything you saw comes back to you one day. With us or against us? Not again, lick my balls, bitch. I wish she goes to hell and takes those Evangelican talebans with her.

MetalPriestFan puts it well. But everyone, even a rock star who shows no signs of having authoritative views, has a right to an opinion.
And my opinion is, although I abhor hunting personally:
attractive women who hunt = HOTTTTTTTTTTTT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A good point, but a flawed one. Something tells me the governor doesn't have the authority to stop people from hunting (at least I thought that was up to the federal government) and anyways isn't the wolf an endangered species which would make hunting it poaching?
Also, aren't you from Britain Geezer, why poke around in american politics? For god's sakes Europeans complain about us trying to run the world all the time but yet they want to run our country, I don't think I'll ever understand it.
Either way, save the wolves, the most metal animal ever.

Well, Geezer's first problem is that he gives as much credence to the life of an animal as he does to a human. The second problem is that he's not even American, and he's nitpicking things about Palin that in the long run won't mean jack squat if she's elected VP. Not that he would know that, obviously.
Of course, anyone who makes up their mind about politics or any other important issue just because a musician said so needs help anyway, so...

The real story:
Alaska voters shoot down predator control initiative Mary Pemberton/The Associated Press
Originally published Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11:53 p.m. Updated Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 12:21 a.m.
ANCHORAGE -- A ballot initiative that would end the state's predator control program as now conducted was failing at the polls Tuesday.
With 70 percent of the votes counted, the measure was lagging with more than 55 percent of voters saying no.
Ballot Measure 2 would prohibit the shooting of wolves and bears either from the air or once a plane has landed, unless the commissioner of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game finds that a "biological emergency" exists and has adequate scientific proof.
The measure defines a biological emergency as one in which a prey population will irreversibly decline unless aircraft are used to reduce the number of wolves and bears.
It also would require state employees to conduct predator control. Now, private citizens are permitted to kill the animals.
The initiative also would allow only the minimum number of predators to be removed to end the emergency.
Nick Jans, one of the initiative sponsors, said it was tough going up against the Palin administration, Fish and Game, and members of the Alaska Outdoor Council. A strong Republican turnout also may have hurt their side, he said.
"I think that basically we got dragged under a train," Jans said.
He also said the description of the ballot measure prepared by the lieutenant governor's office was confusing to voters.
"It reads poorly and I don't think that is a mistake. It was intentional," he said.
The state's predator control program, begun in McGrath in 2003 and now operating in five areas of Alaska, is designed to help boost moose and caribou numbers where residents say game has become too scarce.
Under the program, more than 800 wolves have been killed and a far smaller number of bears.
Supporters of the state's predator control program say it is doing some good, bringing much-needed relief to rural residents at a time when the cost of living in Bush Alaska is skyrocketing with the prices for food and fuel.
Opponents say the program, approved by the state Board of Game, thwarts the will of the people, who have twice voted to undo similar programs where aircraft were used to track and kill predators.
Opponents also say the program caters to big game hunters and guides from urban areas, mostly Anchorage and Fairbanks, by manipulating game populations unnecessarily.
Cliff Judkins, board game chairman, said he can understand why people don't much like predator control but wants Alaskans to know it is done as a last resort.
"There is just no other way to reduce the wolves," he said.
Eddie Grasser, president of the Alaska chapter of Safari Club International, the group that provided most of the money to fight the measure, said the vote shows that most Alaskans support hunting as a vital part of wildlife management.
"Our side believes we need these types of management tools available," Grasser said.
No one needs moose and caribou meat so much that wolves and bears need to be shot from the air, said Breffny Conley, 48, of Chugiak, as he prepared to vote.
"I think it is morally wrong. That is a sport for cowards," he said. "God gives us things on earth that you can work for or steal. That's stealing."
Before Alaska statehood in 1959, shooting wolves from airplanes was common. Aerial sport hunting was banned in 1972 but the law allowed aerial shooting for predator control.
In 1996 and 2000, voters rejected using aircraft to help track and kill wolves. The legislature overturned the measures.
Lin Halterman, an antique appraiser in Chugiak, said she voted in favor of the initiative because she thinks when it comes to predator control the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has too much power.
"The trouble with too much control is too much control," she said.
John Orr, 64, of Anchorage, said he voted no on all four ballot initiatives because he doesn't think voters should have to decide such issues. That's what legislators are for, he said.
"They are letting us down on the job," he said.
However, voting no on Ballot Measure 2 was easy, he said.
"There is no shortage of wolves and bears," Orr said.
His wife, Maria, said she also voted no, pointing to the motorist who last Friday hit a large grizzly bear as it crossed one of the city's busiest highways.
"It showed me they are way too close in town. This is our natural habitat," she said. "We can share the land without them overrunning us."

I have no problem if you kill an animal with the intention that you will eat it afterwards. Killing something for no reason other than a bit of fun is cowardly and inhumane. If you look at that video the kill isn't clean, that is to say quick, as the rifleman has to take another shot to finish the job.

Its called predator control. You can hike for weeks and months looking for a huge wolfpack. The odds of you seeing one while on foot is slim to none. So aerial is the best option and thats just for predator control. Not for a weekend deer hunt. The last time Rockstars and Movie Stars spoke out against the republicans the dems lost bigtime. Rockstars are no different from anyone when it comes to politics. Do you think the fans are idiots and cant decide for ourselves?

There is no actual proof listed in any of those videos that shows Governor Palin supports aerial hunting....u know like a bill she signed or a speech she gave where she mentions this.
And I noticed somebody got something backwards in one of their posts. They're pro-abortion not pro-choice. We're pro-choice and we choose life. ROCK ON FELLOW METALHEADS!!!

Firstly, Obama's not a Muslim. Secondly, McCain wasn't even born in America, and arguably is not even eligible for the Presidency. So, theoretically, Obama's *more* American than McCain can ever be. Look it up.
Then again, that would involve READING, which clearly you don't do, otherwise you wouldn't be saying such idiotic things.
Vote for whomever you want - but, don't be a lying, stupid sheep, swallowing whatever your fed. Just because you *heard* something, doesn't make it so. Anyone voting for McCain that *doesn't* make at least $250,000 a year are not only voting against their self-interest, but, they're voting against America's self-interest.
You think Obama's gonna just blow tax money? How about the $10 BILLION A MONTH we've been blowing in Iraq for the last FIVE YEARS? We could've had universal health care, free college for everyone and guaranteed social security for the money we've wasted in Iraq. So, who's really smart with those precious tax dollars?
BTW, Butler lives in America and may even be a citizen at this point (not sure on the last count). As someone that lives in our country and pays taxes in our country, I'd say he has as much right as anyone else to say what he thinks - that's the American way, right? But, I realize a lot of people here that are flaming ol' Geez probably have no idea what it means to be an American - which is especially pathetic, since you likely were born and raised here!

I must admit....I was impressed by Palin. She's seems to be a pretty sharp woman.
I think this guy just needs to stick to music. I understand he has a right to his opinion but keep it away from the fans. Politics and Metal do not mix!
I think hunting is ok. Ok as long as people eat what they kill.

The rest of the world doesn't get it because they have been a slave to Kings and Queens, dictators and tyrants.
Geezer, I love your music but you need to shut the hell up about USA politics. A foreigner telling an American who they want us to vote for or against is fucking stupid. Even more so if they are taken seriously.

RE: A. Even though McCain wasnt born on continental US soil, he was born at a military base to Americans, which holds the same merits as being born on American soil - so its fine.
Actually, it's more complicated than that. "Any person born in the Canal Zone on or after February 26, 1904, and whether before or after the effective date of this chapter, whose father or mother or both at the time of the birth of such person was or is a citizen of the United States, is declared to be a citizen of the United States." The law that conferred this status took effect on August 4, 1937, one year after John McCain was born — albeit with retrospective effect, resulting in McCain being declared a U.S. citizen. However, the question as to whether or not he is a citizen from birth cannot be answered by this law because (1) it took effect after his birth and (2) it does not state that the person's citizenship was acquired at birth, only that they are a citizen by means of the law's establishment (and, hence, at the time the law takes effect). Indeed, the law in 1936 stated that all persons born to two US citizen parents outside the "limits and jurisdictions of the United States" are citizens at birth, but the problem is that the Panama Canal Zone was explicitly excluded."
That kind of makes it sound like McCain ain't American, don't it?
One point though - there has never been an American president that was not born on American / colonial soil. McCain would be the first.

There are two extremes on the table: celebrities who think their word is law, and people who disregard anything a celebrity has to say simply because they're famous. Both extremes suck. Geezer is the fucking man musically speaking, and he's always seemed humble in the spotlight. If you disagree with his opinion, more power to you. Just don't be a dick about it, mmkay? Geezer certainly wasn't.

First of all, I don't like either candidate. As usual, we are left to pick from the lesser of two evils. Secondly, you are an idiot if you are trying to compre who is "*more* American" and siding with Obama. You strike me as someone who believes evrything you read out of the Democratic party handbook. After serving 20+ years in the military and surviving as a prisoner of war in Vietnam you have the audacity to question his devotion to the American way of life? This makes you especially pathetic. Furthermore, even if Obama is elected we will remain present in the surrounding countries (just as we always have) and continue to "blow" more money on Iraq. The only difference would be the actual occupation of Iraq itself. Take your own advice "don't be a lying, stupid sheep, swallowing whatever your fed" by the Democratic party. Neither choice will be "good for America".

RE: "you are an idiot if you are trying to compre who is "*more* American" and siding with Obama"
Really? Seems to me that if you are *born* here, than that makes you more American than someone *not* born here. It's pretty simple, actually.
Who's the idiot?
RE: "You strike me as someone who believes evrything you read out of the Democratic party handbook"
Then you must not be very bright. It's true that I vote Democratic, but, I don't toe their line - in fact, they piss me off more than Republicans, because while Republicans have no ethics or integrity, Democrats have neither, but, say that they do.
But, this much is certain: if half of everything the Democrats say is BS, all + more that comes out of the Republicans mouths is BS AND bad for the country.
RE: "After serving 20+ years in the military and surviving as a prisoner of war in Vietnam you have the audacity to question his devotion to the American way of life?"
In fact, I do. Since the only thing he has going for him *is* his POW status in Vietnam, and he's spent the last 30 years jamming it down everyone's throats, I'd say it's fair game.
Plus, this is a guy who votes AGAINST veterans benefits, votes AGAINST veterans health care, and votes AGAINST veterans pay, I'd say the only devotion he has is to himself and his money.
RE: "Neither choice will be "good for America"."
Well, *one* choice won't be good for America. One *might* be, and will definitely be *better* than the other. That would be Obama.
Obama's not perfect - he has a number of issues that I disagree with him on - but, he looks like FDR or Abraham Lincoln compared to McPOW. Obama actually comes from the middle class - as opposed to McCain, who comes from a long line of Admirals and other blue bloods - and knows what it's like to have things like bills (he only paid off his student loans within the last five years). Plus, after 232 years of old, rich, white man rule, I'd say that having a black man (and whatever his bloodline, he's identifies himself as black, and I'm sure every white person he's ever met IDs him as black) will bring a unique and totally different perspective to things. Maybe not always for the better, but, I *guarantee* that whatever Obama does, it will be much better than what we've had the last eight years.
And, to bring this full circle, Geezer says what he says because he knows people will listen to him and discuss it, whether or not they agree with him. I'd say that's a celebrity who knows how to use his fame.

So by your way of thinking; the kid from Southern California that was born in America and joined Al Qaida is more American than say the colonists that formed this great Nation? From the excerpt above, Geezer isn't meddling in politics: he's expressing an opinion on views held by one of the candidates. Which doesn't mean he's endorsing her opponents. Since what happens in America ultimately tends to impinge on the rest of us, why shouldn't he express his opinions (especially as I imagine he spends a great deal of time in the USA, and may even live and pay taxes there for all we know)? I thought Freedom of Speech was important to you guys
And considering these Blabbermouth posts are 99% full of people telling others what to think, or criticising anyone who thinks differently, it's kinda rich to criticise someone else for expressing an opinion (especially when it's on an issue that's rather more important than whether the new AC/DC and Metallica albums will be any good)
And, yes, I am British, a Sabbath fan and a vegetarian (I'm sure some comedian will add "and gay" - well done, very clever) but the argument would be the same whether I agreed with Geezer or not

Last post from me on this, bitches:
RE: Hint: original colonies. / So by your way of thinking; the kid from Southern California that was born in America and joined Al Qaida is more American than say the colonists that formed this great Nation?
To that last part, first: Actually, it has nothing to do with my thinking. The constitution (you should try READING it sometime) actually addresses the citizenship of the colonial-era Americans. But, as you'll note from what I wrote above, the law about Panama Canal births - especially from the era that McCain was born - is a lot more vague and less conclusive (though, as noted above, the law was SPECIFIC to EXCLUDE those born in the Panama Canal Zone).
Obama was born in Hawaii in 1962 - Natural Born American citizen. McCain was born in 1936 in the Panama Canal zone - American citizen, yes - NOT Natural Born American, as required by the constitution.
But, instead of just arguing because you don't like the truth, why don't you actually pick up a BOOK and figure it out for yourself?
I guess you guys just respond without actually READING (this is clearly a theme with at least blindgreed1) - this was from my first post:
One point though - there has never been an American president that was not born on American / COLONIAL soil. McCain would be the first.
What was that? What was that?
Actually, I do know what I'm talking about. But, I don't expect nor want people to follow me - I hope that they do their own due dilligence. There ain't one thing I've written that can't be backed up by facts. As I suggested, blindgreed1, try looking it up before you just spew whatever comes into your mouth.
But, I know that's tough for right wing nutballs to deal with, as reality, alas, has a liberal bias.
Oh, and to keep it on topic, SABBATH RULES.

Those of us who've been around for over 18 years don't always need to read what happened 20 years ago to decide what to believe. I will respect your opinion for what it is: An opinion and everybody has one. Your problem is that you speak as though there are facts and guarantees involved. This is not the case. It's just your opinion which reflects your beliefs. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's funny how non-Alaskans don't understand this issue. Aerial Wolf killing has nothing to do with hunting. It is about predator control. People (mainly wildlife officials) go out and kill wolves in areas where they are killing off moose and caribou, which many people throughout Alaska still need for survival. If you kill off some of the wolves, the moose and caribou populations increase to bring up the numbers so they don't get killed off in an area. Letting the wolves kill off anything they can catch can seriously impact many of the isolated communities that hunt moose and caribou for food. When you have to pay 8-9 bucks for a gallon of milk you can only imagine how important moose and caribou are for the survival of many folks out in the villages.

I don't get how a person from another country is not allowed to speak on American political issues. We as Americans seem to have a little too much influence on other countries' political goings-on.
Rock and roll for the past 45 years has been about social and political change. This was the whole point behind the Beatles and Bob Dylan in the mid-60's. Metal initially began as social and political commentary, as the first Black Sabbath album attests. But I guess the true purpose of metal is really about getting stoned and getting laid. Who'da thunk??
People seem to criticize Geezer for "getting high and wasted" back in the day, so who is he one to talk about moral issues? But that's the whole point of metal. Maybe some guys haven't lived the most exemplary lives, but the music says something important and powerful to us. If everyone dumped every artist who didn't live up to society's expectations, in spite of the worthiness of their works, there would be very little on our library shelves, museums, or record stores.
I'd like to see McCain and Palin do a fraction of what Geezer and his band have accomplished in bringing issues to international attention all these years.
