METALLICA's HETFIELD, TRUJILLO Talk About Songwriting Process For 'Death Magnetic' - Sep. 5, 2008
Video footage of METALLICA members James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo talking about the songwriting process for each of the tracks that appear on the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", can be viewed in two parts below.

METALLICA's official web site is currently streaming no less than six full songs from the band's forthcoming "Death Magnetic" album. The tracks, which were all premiered last night (Thursday, September 4) during the broadcast special "Metallica: The World Premiere Of Death Magnetic", are as follows:

* "The Day That Never Comes"
* "My Apocalypse"
* "Cyanide"
* "All Nightmare Long"
* "Broken, Beat & Scarred"
* "The Judas Kiss"

"Metallica: The World Premiere Of Death Magnetic" was hosted by FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins and was broadcast live from METALLICA's headquarters in San Rafael, California. The 60-minute program, which aired on stations across the country, featured James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo giving fans an exclusive look at "Death Magnetic". Check out photos from the event at this location.

Several copies of "Death Magnetic" were sold early at a Paris record store on Tuesday (September 2), which led to the entire album being leaked online within hours.

Due on September 12, "Death Magnetic" will also be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock the same day that the record is released.

METALLICA will play two low-dough shows in Europe to celebrate the CD's release, in Berlin on September 12 and London on September 15. Tickets for both are priced under $20 and open to fan club members only.

The band will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.

But with that said, I've just gotta say it appears James has changed.. hearing him talk now sounds like he's a gentleman who truly enjoys the smell of his own farts ala South Park.

AC/DC hasn't had a new idea since Back in Black. Talk about a band that has slipped into self-parody. Thunderstruck, Moneytalks, and Stiff Upper Lip were real great tunes, eh? Hell, even most of FTATR is laughably over the top.

AC/DC was awesome with Bon Scott because Scott was in on the joke, and delivered the lyrics with more of a sense of fun than a sense of meat-headed machismo. Brian Johnson is AC/DC's Sammy Hagar. Way too over the top and balls out, which ends up making the music laughable. Add that to the fact that they are incapable of anything new, and have been for, oh, 27 or so years, and you've got a band who gets an eternal free pass.

To sum up--

AC/DC with Bon Scott -- killer rock n' roll band

AC/DC with Brian Johnson -- self-parodic meathead rock

I'm a hater because I used to love this band so much and they totally flaked out and became all they said they hated. To me, this band died after AFJA. What most fanboys don't get is that the haters hate because we have been betrayed by this band. It used to be quality metal by REAL people. Now they only wanna be hollywood stars. They are flaky, whiny, spoiled brats now and it has reflected in their music since 1990 when they started to love the smell of their own farts. St. Anger was the final betrayal. It sucks to see what such a brilliant band has become. I still have hope that they can push the sun back into the sky one last time with the new album and they had better because if they don't, even the fanboys might have to start agreeing that this once mighty and great band, and truly one of the best EVER, is dead.

Death Magnetic is a very good record, and I would say it's a pretty exceptional record considering the age of the band. But I could see how old school fans and open minded people who hated the Load-St. Anger period would not care too much about this record. DM is NOT a return to the sound of the first four. To paraphrase someone who posted on Blabbermouth recently, it sounds like all eras of Metallica thrown into a blender. There's a lot of Metallica's Bob Rock era sound in this record. The difference is that instead of laying in a boring, midtempo verse-chorus-verse groove, these songs are packed with speed and dynamic, shifting riffs. Death Magnetic ain't the second coming. It is a very, very good record. And the vitality on hand, not to mention all the riffs and change ups, are cool as fuck. But it's not going to convert all the people who loved Metallica in the past, and feel betrayed by the nineties stuff. And it's not going to convert the cookie monster lovers, either.

It was the highlight of the night... People were coming up from the floor to do backing vocals for Seek ... was kick ass...

I've been into Metallica since '84, saw them in Scotia, NY when I was about 12 ... Didn't know who the hell they were then, but it changed my life... I'm digging the new album, best shit since AJFA...

These guys douched away the last 18 years. It's impossible for them to do anything comparable to MoP, or AJFA. This was their chance and i've heard nothing but "stock" riffs. Metallica riffs used to be scary, creative, and memorable...those days are over. Back then, these riffs would've been left backstage where they belong....nowadays, the're on the CD.

This junk is not on par with the classics...if you think it is, it's only because you desperately want it to be, and you've convinced yourself that it is....and so has metallica.

There's music I can't stand too. IMHO though DM is one of Metallica's best albums. Here's my rundown:

1. AJFA
2. Masters
3. Death Magnetic
4. Ride the Lightning
5. Load
6. Kill em all
7. Black album
8. St. Anger
9. Reload

From the versions I've heard, yes the album could be remastered. But I can see through production. The songs are just fucking amazing. I would give my left nut and an earlobe to have AJFA remastered too. A guy can dream. I agree too, Vapor Trails had the same issue, pissed me off. But I still love the album.

This album is all about money, it's forced and fake, not honest music, that's why it is generic, boring, uninspired.Lars let it scape himself in a interview, he said they were going metal because metal was big again.We can't go against the band's own words.I am not saying anything, Lars said himself.Period.

Or am I the only one who thinks so? I don´t understand why professional people can cause such disaster. Let´s hope the final mix is better, although the rest of the mixing we can listen to now does not do any favour (the guitars lack crunchiness for example). We know James´s voice is not the same as before, but he tries to do his best at least.

Let's move on to something more entertaining!

Good one EL PENIS

"We just did whatever Rick Rubin told us."

Tell that to slayers reign in blood, you ill informed fuck.

BOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

---

Rick Rubin TOLD them to make an album that combines Masters and the Black album. They have been following orders and trends since the black album. Bob Cock told them how to sell out and Rick Rubin told them how to be meh-tal.

1. And Justice For All
2. Puppets
3. Kill 'Em All
4. Lightning
5. Black Album
6. Death Magnetic
7. Load
8. Reload
9. St. Anger

---

I like how you rank these. If Death Magnetic had come out after the black album instead of the 15 years of crap they released things would have been a lot better.

I agree 100%. I was hoping DM would be so badass that it erased the last 15 years...not quite. I'm sure some of the tunes will grow on me, but a lot of it is really weak.

The term "stock" as applied to metallic comes from Some Kind Of Monster. I use it because i feel it accurately describes what they've been serving their fans. It's still metallica, but their riffs are mostly amateurish.

The fanboys posting here are pathetic...

"YOUR DAD'S DICK IS IN YOUR MOUTH...AND, AND, THATS WHERE THE CD WILL BE WHEN METALLICA PWNS YOU...AAHAHAH...HAHAHAHA"

fucking losers

Give me a fucking break. Not even worthy of making a comment about. All you fuckers dissing Metallica are fucking posers. You might as well throw all your albums away, cut your hair and become assholes. Strike that, your already assholes.

It seems you just can't accept that they made an awesome album and your just grasping at the last opportunities to make derogatory comments, unoriginal ones at that. So I think its time that you POSERS just sit down and shut your fucking mouths. Me and millions of Metallica fans have been enduring your diarrhea of the mouth bullshit for WAY to long. Now it's time for you to realise how much YOU suck.

I dare forward the notion that if Bob's production, mixing and mastering team were involved in the mixing and mastering of Death Magnetic, it wouldn't be their shittiest sounding album of their career. Saint Anger may have sucked in ways, but it didn't have clipping as much as this one does (judging by the leak). I love the new albums songs, but will not be buying the album because of the shitty sound quality. Making Justice sound like the Black Album in comparison. Gone are the days that Bob Rock and Lars Ulrich took the raw mixes of the Black Album back to the mastering plant to remaster the album before release because they had clipping on two or three parts. Now the whole album clips and sounds distorted (not just talking about the guitars). Now I don't know if you guys want Metallica competing with Merzbow, but I am not into that concept one bit.

I’m liking the album more and more, but unfortunately I can’t stand listening to it because of the mix and mastering. Let’s hope the original cd sounds better so it can actually be enjoyed without the bleeding ears and migraines that come with it. Listen to any snare drum roll that Lars does and the thunderous distortion that takes over your speakers. The extreme “loudness” of the mix was obviously done on purpose but why?? Greg Fidelman is the one who mixed it and has also done bands like: Slipknot (vol 3), System of a Down (self titled), Slayer (soundtrack to apocalypse), Marilyn Manson (holy wood), Life of Agony (broken valley producer), U2…etc..(the list goes on). He’s a genius engineer. I get the sneaking suspicion this had something to do with Lars and his “snare fetish”.
