METALLICA Rehearsing 'The Day That Never Comes' At READING; Video Available

Video footage of METALLICA rehearsing its new song "The Day That Never Comes" backstage prior to the band's August 24, 2008 headlining performance at the Reading festival in Reading, UK can be viewed below. METALLICA is offering a "Death Magnetic Experience" pre-sale ticket package between now and September 13, the official general on-sale date for tickets to the band's upcoming North American tour. Members of the group's fan club have already had first crack at tickets, and now American Express cardholders will get their shot on Monday and Tuesday (September 8 and September 9), followed by a general public pre-sale on Wednesday (September 10). The package includes purchase of up to four tickets with better seating, a free download of the show you attend at LiveMetallica.com, and delivery "right to your door" of the band's new CD, "Death Magnetic". The pre-sale ends at midnight on September 12.

Metallica is fucking with us. There's no way the production would be this bad with all the "clipping" and distorted drums to be real. When Death Magnetic comes out there will be all new songs with proper production.

I heard that the next album is called "The Unforgiven" and it's produced by whoever they could grab off the streets of Norway because anyone could produce better than this piece of shit album.

all of you people bitching about the quality need to find somethign new to do with your time, it isn't as bad as youa re making it out to be and perfectly tolerable
and honestly listening to the cd the only some i really notice it on are the opening snare hits on the day that never comes other than that it sounds fine to me
so unless you're listening to it through shit speakers or you just are a picky fuck, listen to the music and enjoy it
i have a lot of albums that sound like shit and this is a gem compared to those and guess what, i still love the music on the albums
some good albums that sound like shit that i still enjoy that come to mind immediately are DOWN III, Black Label Society "sonic brew

Umm no, you are wrong.. Metallica have always been sticklers for Sound Quality. The human ear can only take so much when it comes to lack of dynamics. I defy you listen to the retail version three times in a row and then come back and tell me you dont sense something funny? Rush's Vapor Trails was lashed out at for a similar reason. It has nothing to do with the quality of the music, but the mixing/mastering is fucked up, even compared to Saint Anger. Saint Anger may had not even been mastered for all I know (wouldn't surprise me), but ear fatigue will happen with this new album. You know that the Black Album was nearly released this way but Bob Rock AND Lars thought it would sound like shit (probably back when only two or three parts clipped) and they took it back to the mastering plant. Theres all sorts of parts that clip on this one, trust me I analyzed the mp3s of at least two or three of the songs!

yes some albums have sounded like shit, but when it's over distorted and clips this much it's worse than just "amateur quality". James' vocals and Lars drums both break 0dB in the mastering process. It's just too obvious that's what is happening here. Never break 0dB!!
I listen to old Darkthrone which has the lowest budget production you can think of, but at least my ears don't hurt from over-distortion.

So many sound engineers so few jobs....
Metallica lost me when they released the' Black' Album, I just could not get into it or any of their post 'and Justice...' releases. They were never my favorite but their first 4 albums were good.
I heard this whole album on the radio last night and it sounded pretty good, heavy, aggressive, dare I say it? thrashy? It was nice that they really have gotten back to thrash based music. Im not sure I will buy it too much history and Bob Seger for my tastes but it didnt sound bad, I di not hate it like I did Load and ReLoaded.
The production is typical Rick Rubin I dont know what everybody is bitchin about.

Not sure what direction this train wreck is heading, wow. Where's the smoke and mirrors ? ? The once mighty metallica looks like a lame horse limping to the wire , time for them to be turned out to pasture cuz that fucking sucks ass donkey balls. No matter what is done to resolve the clipping and the mix in general it wont resolve Lars danish snare roll part in the album.. this video clip just proved to me how uninspired he is he should just make his exit now and go produce some films.. the album is a bit let down i was expecting and justice for master but it does sound like what stanger should have been.. if they had a different drummer then maybe it would have been better.

Uh, no you're wrong..I have tons of Rick Rubin albums that dont distort and sound like shit. Danzig, Slayer, Mars Volta, even old Chilis (not Californication). So youre wrong- he is a producer not a MASTERING ENGINEER.

So I listend to the highest quality version of Death Magnetic that I could find on the net (320 kbit). The songs are better than the last album that’s for sure. A few re-hashed old riffs and beats.
The problem is this. It is painful to listen to. All the levels are maxed out and the drums are distorted. I thought it was just me but everyone appears to be complaining about it. How could this happen to a million dollar band? The only thing I can come up with is that this album was a planned leak by Metallica in order to flood the internet with bad masters of their new album 2 weeks in advance of the release. This way people would be forced to buy it because of the reckless amount of poorly mastered copies already distributed.
However, this theory confuses me because Apple has apparently demanded that Metallica give them a re-mastered version of their new single “The Day That Never Comes” because iTunes is complaining about it too !
Also, I've watched the High Definition Video of their new single and the audio has exactly the same problem…….

I love the passion that Lars puts in the song, even his drumming (just kidding). I could play those basic fills and I would look like a professional (uauh), all you need is ear and timing, that´s all, and I am fucking serious about that. It´s always the same, look at the other guys, they enjoy when they play, but Lars´ face is always the same, completely dispassionate and pathetic. HIRE ANOTHER DRUMMER NOW FFS!!!!!

Ever walk into a musical instrument store and see some twit who can't play worth crap trying out a new drum set? No? Then watch this video. Oh my God, Lars has got to be the crappiest "drummer" I've ever heard.
I've seen Metallica three times (twice when Cliff was stiil alive playing with Raven and Anthrax) and once in a big arena. I walked out on them, you guessed it, three times and hung out in the lobby until their painful sets were done and laid to rest. (And no, I didn't go to the shows to see Metallica, I went for the headliners)
I can't believe the rivetheads that fall for this monotonous shit and think it's great. Pure crap and the older they've gotten the worse they've become.

The best thing to consider DM as a valid and buyable album would be as a whole songs´ performances, because when it comes to the individual performances of the musicians, that´s when I get pissed off (ok, Lars?) and it makes me not want even of thinking of buying it, because his drumming and his snare sound is an insult to a REAL, EXERCISED AND MOTIVATED (professional) player, so I´d need to change to mind, which I find it hard at the moment, because the songs sound promising.

I was wondering why I was getting tired after one listen since I pretty much loved the songs, so I loaded the files up in Cubase and had a look at them... No more was it only my ears that were bleeding, my eyes started too. It's no wonder it sounds the way it does. A good produced, mexed and mastered song will be a bunch of waves, but these songs were just a big, black block of sound.
I call for a remaster!
