HETFIELD On Use Of METALLICA's Music To Torture Guantanamo Bay Prisoners: 'Part Of Me Is Proud'
- Sep. 7, 2008
|
|
The German-language television network 3SAT recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield about the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", the "Some Kind of Monster" movie and the use of METALLICA's music to torture Guantanamo Bay, Cuba prisoners. "Part of me is proud is because they chose METALLICA," Hetfield said about the reports that the band's song "Enter Sandman" was used during the interrogation of Mohammed al-Qahtani — known as the 20th hijacker on Sept. 11 — and that listening to the track brought al-Qahtani to tears "because he thought he was hearing the sound of Satan." James added, "It's strong; it's music that's powerful. It represents something that they don't like — maybe freedom, aggression… I don't know… freedom of speech. And then part of me is kind of bummed about it that people worry about us being attached to some political statement because of that. We've got nothing to do with this and we're trying to be as apolitical as possible, 'cause I think politics and music, at least for us, don't mix. It separates people, [and] we wanna bring people together. So, so be it. I can't say 'Stop.' I can't say 'Do it.' It is just a thing — it's not good or bad." Watch 3SAT's entire 26-minute chat with Hetfield in three parts below. Part 1: Part 2: Part 3:

Of course, another interrogation technique would have been having them talk to Lars for hours....

He can't necessarily endorse human torture either.
They should beat the prisoners up with St. Anger.
As for the AFJA to Don't tread on me.....that was a big 4 years from 1988 to 1991 with the first Gulf War. Remember, the first Gulf War was extremely popular.

Whatever happened to those 4 guys in anarchy t-shirts? What happened to James, the front figure that used to talk about how fucked up the establishment were, and how much he hated authorities. I guess those "rebels" grew up and became a part of the establishment, and now reckons themselves as authorities. As a long time fan (since '84), it makes me sad to see how age, fame and money changes people to become what they ones fought against.

One and Disposable Heroes are about the soldier's experience of war, they never did explicitly make an anti-war statement or comment on any particular conflict.
However 'just' or not any particular war is, soldiers on the ground will experience that kind of thing because that's the nature of war.
That said, I haven't made my mind up on this story yet. Whilst I deplore torture, I read a book written by someone who was a private military contractor in Iraq. And he said all the Iraqis they knew would much rather be 'tortured' by the US than their own countrymen of varying factions, who actually knew what real 'torture' is. By the way, the author was English too.

...the decision by US bands to distance themselves from politics or sit on the fence is purely down to business. There seems to be a section of society that assumes if you speak out about you governments actions then you are traitor to your country, they disown the band and this leads to a downfall in music/ticket sales.

Some people here said that metallica were posing as rebels in the begining and now show their true colors...??
Can you name a song by metallica that is very political?
Metallica has never endorsed any political parties or taken sides on any 'hot' political issues that divides a nation of people. (Kirk has supported the Democrats outside metallica)
But in terms of songs...: Disposable heroes is not about politics. It main theme is 'control'..War is used as a reference to talk about control. (in terms of ranks)
One: is based on a book. Metallica wanted to do a song where the character is in a state where he is like a vegetable (a coma state but aware of what is going around him). No politics buddy.
Justice for all..the whole album talks about general themes..lies, censorships, fear. e.t.c...But not politics..
Don't tread on me..is closely a patriotic song that does not go into any political landscape.
So metallica were never rebels in the political arena. They were never anarchist. In fact if you have heard interviews with Lars during the KEA/RTL era, Lars stated that he though anarchy and statanism are all bullshit.. Part of the sex, drugs and rock n roll cliche that rock/metal bands abide to.

Or better put : They were POSING as such. They stated many times in ancient interviews how much they hated authority, commercial music of ANY kind, mtv and the status quo. Their words not mine. And they wrote plently of lyrics about rebelling against the system: "Fight Fire With Fire": Against nuclear war
"Ride the Lightning": Against death penalty ("Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?)
"Escape": Against sheeple mindlessly following rules and trends
"Master of Puppets": Against drug adddiction and how the system uses to control people
"Back to the Front": (Against war as it's about soldiers who are brainwashed into going to war, it's pretty harsh too: "Back to the front, you COWARD, you SERVANT, you BLINDMAN" hardly in tune with the "let's support the troops" attitude of today, wouldn't you say?)
Leper Messiah: Against tv evangelists
Damage Inc: Pretty self-explanatory ("Following our instinct not a trend" and look at them now, lol)
"Blackened": Against pollution and the destruction of the eco-system
I could go on forever really, they turned into what they claimed they would always fight. Fuck them, they're only relevant to sheeple.

The US *blared* music at General Noriega's compound during the invasion of Panama. IIRC, they used metal, and also pop stuff like Milli Vanilli.
I think something very atonal and rhythmically "outside" would be more effective. Something like Meshuggah would probably be more effective than a more mainstream, common time style like Metallica. Maybe I should submit my CV to the CIA and implement this.

No... no I don't. For these reasons:
1. Wasn't on blabbermouth back in Feb (used the gauntlet) 2. That was the first result that came up on Google. Beyond my control.

it's OK to admit it, because they changed the list.
why?
because it's too politically incorrect for even the U.S. military to be playing "fuck your god" at the prisoners.

HETFIELD On Use of METALLICA's Some Kind of Monster To Torture Bay Area Metalheads: "Part Of Me Is Crowded"
Some Kind of Monster was used during orientation week for Mohammed al-Qahtani- known as the 20th cashier at 711- and that viewing the documentary brought al-Qahtani to tears "because he thought he was watching the Sound of Music." James added, "It's wrong; it's film that's pitiful. It represents something that they don't like - maybe artistic freedom, repression... I don't know... freedom of slurred speech. And then part of me is kind of bummed about it that people worry about us being attached to some commercial statement because of that. We've got nothing to do with metal anymore and we're trying to be asinine as possible, 'cause we think beer and metal, at least for us, don't mix. It separates buttocks, [and] we wanna bring more ass together. So, so be it. I can't say 'I'm metal.' I can't say "Metal is me.' It's just a thing - it's not good music or bad ass."

Torture, whoever does it, for whatever reason is just WRONG!!!
Is pretty clear that Metallica has nothing to do with the "song selection" in Guantanamo... but don't try to be "Politicaly Correct".
Say it: don't use my fucking music for such a shameful thing.
Fuck no!

You know, it's hilarious how there are people out there who think Metallica are like... the devil.
They did a good job with making them listen to Deicide's "Fuck Your God", but seriously... Throw some fucking Suicide Silence or Cradle Of Filth on in these prisons. I know a lot of you people hate cradle of filth, but think about how creepy that shit would be to those devoted religious terrorist fucks.
CAN YOUR GOD... SAVE YOU NOW?.. CAN YOUR GOD SAVE YOU NOW!?

JUDAS RISING When journalists asked him why he began to cry after hearing Metallica's "Enter Sandman" during an interrogation, Mohammed al-Qahtani replied: "To me, that song symbolizes the moment that Metallica betrayed the underground thrash metal movement and sold out to mainstream radio, MTV and the almighty dollar. It is the sound of Satan or, in other words, the sound of commercialism. Now everytime I hear this song, I immediately burst into tears, because the single and video release of "Enter Sandman" marked the end of the period when Metallica were still a real metal band and made music that mattered."
Man, that made me laugh. Post of the day.

Reprieve, the legal action charity that represents over 30 Guantanamo prisoners, has launched an initiative to encourage artists to speak out against the use of music as part of the torture techniques implemented by the current US administration. In July, David Gray told the BBC, "What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them. That is torture.” Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, who have recently appeared on stage in Guantanamo orange jumpsuits, expressed his disgust back in 2006, and other artists are making a stand to protest – Massive Attack, for example, are using backdrops depicting "extraordinary rendition" flights on their current tour. Reprieve's initiative, which includes a list of artists whose music has been used for torture, is here: http://www.reprieve.org.uk/Press_stop_torture_music.htm

I’m liking the album more and more, but unfortunately I can’t stand listening to it because of the mix and mastering. Let’s hope the original cd sounds better so it can actually be enjoyed without the bleeding ears and migraines that come with it. Listen to any snare drum roll that Lars does and the thunderous distortion that takes over your speakers. The extreme “loudness” of the mix was obviously done on purpose but why??
Greg Fidelman is the one who mixed it and has also done bands like: Slipknot (vol 3), System of a Down (self titled), Slayer (soundtrack to apocalypse), Marilyn Manson (holy wood), Life of Agony (broken valley producer), U2…etc..(the list goes on). He’s a genius engineer. I get the sneaking suspicion this had something to do with Lars and his “snare fetish”.

No wonder metal heads have a reputation for being huge dumbasses. Get a fucking education, all of you.
(Excerpt taken from http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jun/19/usa.guantanamo)
"If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of their exposure," James Hetfield, co-founder of Metallica, has said. As for his music being torture, he laughed: "We've been punishing our parents, our wives, our loved ones with this music for ever. Why should the Iraqis be any different?" Such posturing may go with the territory for an artist of the Metallica genre, so there is no need to speculate about whether Hetfield is being naive or wilfully ignorant. But no sane person voluntarily plays a single tune at earsplitting volume, over and over, 24 hours a day, and expects to stay sane.
Despite this, to date, the Pentagon's semanticists have achieved their purpose, and many people think that torture by music is little more than a rather irritating enforced encounter with someone else's iPod. Binyam Mohamed, the British resident who is still held in Guantánamo Bay, knows a bit about such torture. The CIA rendered him to Morocco, where his torturers repeatedly took a razor blade to his penis throughout an 18-month ordeal.
When I later sat across from him in the cell, he described how psyops methods were worse than this. He could anticipate physical pain, he said, and know that it would eventually end. But the experience of slipping into madness as a result of torture by music was something quite different.
"Imagine you are given a choice," he said. "Lose your sight or lose your mind." While having your eyes gouged out would be horrendous, there is little doubt which you would choose. Mohamed remains in Guantánamo. The US military will decide, probably within two weeks, whether to go forward with a military commission, based on "evidence" that was tortured out of him.
To those who have the misfortune to study torture, all this is old hat. Members of the IRA interned in Northern Ireland in the 1970s recall the use of loud noise, piped into their cells, as the worst aspect of their ordeal. One Guantánamo interrogator blithely estimated that it would take about four days to break someone, if the interrogation sessions were interspersed with strobe lights and loud music. 'Break' is another euphemism that is bandied about among torturers, as if "breaking" a person was some kind of psychological truth serum. Of course, the 'results' you get from a 'broken' prisoner have little to do with truth."
And if you don't believe it, you're fucking idiots as well as morally bankrupt. Not only is the music torture, it's more devastating then the pain, because we have natural defenses against pain. There's no defense against what James Hatfield's life's work is doing to people in the darkest holes our government provides. And he's fucking PROUD OF IT, which makes him either an asshole or a huge fucking moron.
You're all like George Bush, you're LACKING THE PROPER INTELLIGENCE. Or at least the proper imagination.
