AC/DC's Back Catalog Outsells SLIPKNOT's 'Hope' In Australia - Sep. 7, 2008
According to Undercover News, AC/DC has six albums in the Australian Top 50 this week (including one in the top 20) with collective sales that have outstripped the country's No. 1 album, SLIPKNOT's "All Hope Is Gone".

The following AC/DC LPs have made it to this week's chart:

20. TNT (1975)
26. The Razors Edge (1990)
27. Highway To Hell (1979)
28. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976)
30. Who Made Who (1986)
45. Stiff Upper Lip (2000)

The six albums have sold a total of 10,871 copies — over 3,000 units more than "All Hope Is Gone", which moved 7,500 units this week.

AC/DC's first new single in eight years, "Rock 'N Roll Train", hit the band's web site and radio stations on August 28. A video for the song was shot in London and will premiere later this month. "Rock 'N' Roll Train" is classic AC/DC from start to finish, with bluesy riffs, a rock-solid tempo and a scorching solo from Angus Young.

According to a posting on the unofficial AC/DC web site AC/DC Highway To Hell, a limited-edition "deluxe edition" version of AC/DC's new "Black Ice" will include a blue AC/DC logo and will be packaged in a special hardcover package. It will also come with a 30-page expanded booklet with exclusive new illustrations, studio and live photographs of AC/DC.

ACDC.com has started a brand new feature called "AC/DC 101" which can be found here. This new feature will give you an in-depth look of AC/DC's history decade by decade, and also offers a cool new widget which will have "On This Day" AC/DC news of events that happened through the band's career.

"Black Ice", the band's first studio album in eight years, will arrive on October 20 and will sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and ACDC.com in the U.S. All three plan multiple promotional campaigns aimed at the group's millions of fans.

AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. The band has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 69 million in the U.S. alone.

"No Bull: The Director's Cut", a chronicle of the band's famed July 1996 concert at the Plaza De Toros De Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray September 9.

This doesn't surprise me, but what does are the people that are wondering why this is news. The new Slipknot is just as bad as the last album. They're another gimmick band. I loved Slipknot's first and second album, but then they just wore really thin. AC/DC are just masters of their craft. I hope that AC/DC albums outsell Slipknot albums all over the world. They are just 100000X better. Kill the poseur is right, 50 years from now people will still be listening to AC/DC and Slipknot albums will be in the bargain MP100 bins.

I like both Slipknot and AC/DC. The point of the article is that with AC/DC's new single out, and new CD on the horizon, that interest in them is definitely on the rise.

Doesn't it really say that, in Australia:
Slipknot is number one
Miley Cyrus is number two
Momma Mia soundtrack is number three
Colplay is number four
Michael Jackson is number five...

and vintage AC/DC is number twenty

if it were the other way around, then people should worry. But AC/DC is a timeless band, and OF COURSE they will outsell an act like slipknot, no question about it.
Just wait until BLACK ICE is released, it will outsell everyone.

Isn't it interesting that a lot of people responding to this article take the fact that six AC/DC albums outsell one Slipknot album as proof that AC/DC is the better band?

If this six-to-one thing proves anything, it's that Slipknot is very, very popular in Australia. They're so popular even, that it takes adding up the sales figures of six albums of one of the most legendary rock bands ever (in their home country, no less) to match the sales of one way more extreme (and, redundantly, less legendary) band.

I'm guessing it's a proud day for Slipknot fans

There was a thread on here the other day which suggested that Australian charts are based on units ordered by stores rather than sold. Which would explain retailers ordering AC/DC's back catalogue in advance of Black Ice's release (after all, they can just slap a black sleeve on old albums and no-one would be able to tell the difference)*

*just kidding folks. I like AC/DC. And the new Slipknot is great too. There's room for everyone...

I think the big thing that stands out is that AC/DC haven't released an album in over 8 years. For over 8 years, evey one of those albums have been widely available and yet album sales have picked up so much, that they've surpassed Slipknot's album sales. Not only that, but AC/DC's back catalog hasn't been heavily promoted, while Slipknot's new album has. The bottom line is that Slipknot, while trendy and radio darlings, can't outsell a band like AC/DC. AC/DC haven't been considered mainstream cool since The Razor's Edge which was a monster album and hit for them. Slipknot is flavor of the day while AC/DC are still kicking ass after nearly 40 years. See if Slipknot have that kind of staying power. Guess what...they don't. No one will give a shit about them in 10 years time let alone 40.
