METALLICA: This Week In 'Death Magnetic'
- Sep. 10, 2008
|
|
|
METALLICA's official web site has been updated with the following message:
"A few activities in Europe this week to tell you about...
"We're just a few days away from the 'official' release and the boys are on their way back to Europe for a few final activities that you may want to check out.
"Paris: Wednesday, September 10 - Rob [Trujillo, bass] and Lars [Ulrich, drums] will be live on the air at Virgin Radio around 6 PM.
"Copenhagen: Thursday, September 11 - Celebrate 'An Afternoon with Metallica' at the Rock. The Black Scouts will air interviews, history, and of course music. James [Hetfield], Lars, Kirk [Hammett], and Robert will be stopping to chat with them in front of a live audience. If you're a Met Club member, run over to www.metclub.com to see how you can be there.
"Berlin: Friday, September 12 - We'll be hosting the first of two 'Death Magnetic' release parties at the brand new 02 World — the first event ever for that venue!! Tickets are still available if you're a Met Club or Mission Metallica member.
"London: Sunday, September 14 - An intimate gig at the BBC Radio Theatre . . . again, if you're a Clubber, check the site for details on how to win tickets.
"Monday, September 15 - FIVE hours of special coverage on [BBC] Radio 1, including interviews with the guys and a broadcast of the show from the night before. You can listen live to these programs or listen at your leisure for seven days afterwards online at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1.
"And, of course, it's the night of the second 'Death Magnetic' release party at the 02 Arena. Unfortunately, this show is now sold out.
"Tuesday, September 16 - The band visits 'Later with Jools Holland' and there is a live 'taster' show that night on BBC2 from 10-10:30pm with the band playing one track. The full hour-long show goes out on Friday, September 19 on BBC2 11:30pm, followed by a repeat of the METALLICA 'Culture Show' special.
"Whew . . . what a week!! We think everyone might be taking a break come September 17!!"

I was at the mall and overheard some kids saying that the new Metallica CD is going to be $5.00 at Hot Topic on Friday. Is that true? Has anyone else heard that?

Hot topic is selling a single for "The Day That Never Comes" for $3 or some shit. But I got 'United Abominations' from there for $9 it's first day on sale, so who knows, could be cheaper to pick it up there.

i really would like to know why people feel the need to continuously compare this new album to ac/dc. i mean come on, they are two entirely different types of music. i like ac/dc and all, but comparing them to metallica is just wrong. i'm sure the new ac/dc album will sound exactly like everyone thinks it will sound. it's gonna sound like the last 10 albums they've put out.

Liking the album, still going to get the CD but the copy I have is good and it's a pretty decent album. It's NOT going to change the world and it isn't going to set the world alight but it's OK. My only worry is that at times it does sound like a bunch of pretty old guys really trying to recapture their youth.

Sure, I can understand why people are doing it.
ACDC have been around 3 times longer and never lost their soul.
Metallica had a great period in the 80's and have been living off of that ever since.
Both albums come out at the same time. The AcDC is another instant classic, the Metallica one is just sad.

I know people say, "when Cliff died, Metallica died". The real truth is that when Bon Scott died, AC/DC died.

this album is brilliant. their whole style has changed from their last shit. hetfield must have woken up from some nightmarish riffs and chorus' dream and brought us some awesome stuff. this is metallica brought from purgatory. not dead and not alive. but definetly with a heart beat.

Now that I've truelly got a decent listen out of that album, I'd love to give a quick opinion based on a good and honest listen. Metallica definately hit the nail on the head, and hit it hard. Although the nail didnt go all the way in, it was one blow and it was pretty damn impressive....
Things that could have been better: - Lars not being allowed to mix his own drums.... his drumming sucks now, and we don't need to be reminded of how much they suck - Better solos for Kirk to play to - A few bits and pieces of songs that could have been rearranged/removed - Better mixing and mastering
Apart from that, its a pretty solid album

Okay, heres a better breakdown of what exactly was wrong with the album: 1. All the drum parts are mixed in such a way that they are distorted and clippy. The steel snare is still there, although it isn't as bad as St. Anger (you can pick it out in some songs, especially The Judas Kiss). And they are WAY too high up in the mix. There are some parts where the drums do need to be higher, but definately not over the whole album. I blame Lars 100% for this, he should really not be allowed to enter the room when they are mixing the albums anymore 2. The idea of Kirk playing solos is pretty overrated; apart from one or two solos, most of them sound pretty forced. The three best solos Kirk ever played on was Master of Puppets, One and Bleeding Me. The only real exception to this criticism is the solo in Unforgiven III, which is pretty well emotional and sweet 3. Certain parts of some songs don't need to be where they are. Mostly it seems to be the excessive snare rolling to make up for Lars' lack of talent. But certain groove and tempo changes (the main riff to End Of The Line) should be altered so that they flow more rather than sound extremely drasticly changed 4. The mixing seems to remind me of a slightly undusted Justice with audible bass. The guitars are still pretty flat, and the bass drums could sound better. If you gave it a similar mix to their 90s album, it would be straight on par with the new Testament album
Now as for the good things: 1. They wrote fast, multilayered and multisection songs again 2. The riffs dont just get hammered out like sonic sludge 3. James is discouraged from crooning, but rather sets the singing for the song (The Unforgiven III being suitable for that kind of singing) 4. Rob gets to show off his chops 5. The songs are just so damn catchy 6. Apart from the negatives, you dont need to feel sorry for the album unlike St Anger
That seems about it. Can't wait until I have my own copy. I will be proud as fuck to have paid good money on this album

I know there are those that say that the mightly Acca Dacca just can't get up to speed with everything, becuz they have been rocking and rolling to three chord songs for over thirty years.
The fact is, they are just oen of those bands that doesnt listen to trends or even bother to look good. They are happy playing to good ol' three chord rock n fucking roll. They need no audience to impress, just their loyal fans, and if they sounded different to waht they did, they wouldnt have their fans.
This band actually makes me proud to be Australian (even though only Phil was born here, the rest came from the UK). Nothing that our country puts out these days even comes close to how high the bar was set back in the late 70s and early 80s

DM has its moments but it sounds like they recorded it like St. Anger...Some parts seem looped and cut and pasted. I will have to listen to it a few more times but now I can only give it 6/10 at best.

There is always some level of editing on a major record release but for the most part the songs on Death Magnetic were cut directly to tape, not protools. They flew all the tracks into Protools after for final edits, mixing, and mastering. Rubin doesn't dig on the new school. The songs were rehearsed and tight before they even set up the gear and mic'd it.

Just a bunch of riffs thrown together..........
James: " hey Lars I'm gonna do this so you do that" "Then we'll go to this riff"
Lars: "but James there's no arrangement that makes sense" "I'll have to write all this down and read the music" "What's the name of this song again ?" "oh I don't care as long as my drums are up in the mix"
James: "this one is called Unforgiven III because I can't think of any other lyrical ideas" 'Do you think they'll buy it ?"
Lars: "What a great idea !!" "The fans will love this shit !!" "maybe they'll even pay for it" "no...probably not because we all know MUSIC IS FREE NOW !!!!!!!!!"
Bwahahahahahahaha !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job by Rick Rubin btw !!! What did he do ??? Rearrange the songs so that they suck ?? Bob Rock would of done better with mish mash riff fest.

I think buying tix if they are coming to your town, and you want to see them, and getting an actual copy of the album (And a download of the show) is a good deal the presale started today at ticketmaster.com. Of course you may not get the album the day it comes out but it saves a few bucks!
