ULRICH: Everyone Expects Us To Release Albums That Define The Genre, To 'Save' Metal - Sep. 12, 2008
Stevie Chick of The Guardian conducted an interview with METALLICA at the end of August when the band was in the UK to play the Reading festival. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On how long they will be able to continue as METALLICA:

Lars Ulrich (drums): "In the immortal words of Noel Gallagher, I'm gonna live forever. [That's] the $64,000 question. THE ROLLING STONES are setting a great precedent, but Charlie Watts doesn't play drums on songs like 'Fight Fire With Fire' every night, no disrespect. Will we be able to play the shit we do when we're 65? I don't know. When it becomes a joke, we'll stop."

On the widely panned 2003 album "St. Anger":

James Hetfield: "'St Anger' happened because it had to happen. It sounds very disjointed to me when I listen to it now. One-dimensional. Relentless. And that's exactly how we felt at the time: we were disjointed, and I think the resentment we felt towards each other was relentless."

On politics:

James Hetfield: "METALLICA has really tried to be non-political, as much as possible. I write about the human side of it all. I really dislike it when celebrities get up on a soapbox and start giving their opinion. It shouldn't be more valid, because you're popular. It gets in the way of the music. I like to just live, and think, and feel. Politics bore me. Politics separate people, especially where we're from. Politics rarely bring people together."

On not being the same people as they were when they recorded "Master of Puppets":

Lars Ulrich: "I'm 44 years old, I've got three kids, I flew in a helicopter on Friday. It's a little difficult to revisit the vibe of 20 years ago when you're living in a two-bedroom suite at Claridge's. I live a very different life to how I lived then."

On the level of expectation METALLICA still command:

Lars Ulrich: "I was thinking the other day about how everyone expects us to continue to release albums that define the genre, to 'save' metal. And that's a lot of fucking pressure, really. Why hasn't anyone dethroned us yet? We support all the great new metal bands, take them under our wing, but people still want us to carry the whole genre on our backs."

I for one, have NOT or NEVER will expect Metallica to be the ONE & ONLY main contender for heavy metal music.
Even in their prime I thought they got a peverse amount of limelight & credit. there is many, many bands out there that have & will continue to deliver solid slabs of metal to the masses, it just that you(Metallica) are so far up corporate & media hounds arses you get ALL the credit!!
Before anyone jumps to conclusions, saying that a band gets too much credit doesn't mean you don't like them, so think before you start ranting about another one jumping on the 'hate Metallica bandwagon'.

I personally think Lars is a typical business man & I will never believe a word out of any of his orifices.

What the hell is that all about? They haven't carried anything since they released "And Justice For All". This is what makes me hate Metallica. Lars has this self-over inflated ego that is just as ridiculous as it is sad.

I love this quote:

"I'm 44 years old, I've got three kids, I flew in a helicopter on Friday. It's a little difficult to revisit the vibe of 20 years ago when you're living in a two-bedroom suite at Claridge's. I live a very different life to how I lived then."

Well if you can't get your shit together long enough to make a damn good Metallica album because you're heart is no longer in it due to the fact that you're off enjoying your money, then it's time to quit. Plus, why do I need to know that Mr. Ego flew in a helicopter? This guy is just a narcissistic asshole.

How about just releasing an album with proper production? To those who don't hear it you are either deaf or ignoring it because of being such a big fan boy. The real cd version of They Day That Never Comes is distorted like a mo-fo... on top of that the album is so over compressed that its hard not to get a headache when listening to it with head phones. Its fucked up and you are gladly paying money to have an inferior product in your hands.

Don't any of you remember a couple weeks back when the Metallica camp said that all this static and distortion was a mistake and would be fixed when the album came out? Well The Day That Never Came sounds exactly the same. They did not fix shit and they lied to all their fans.

It's hard to see that Metallica really enjoy and believe in what they do these days when you hear their 4 latest albums. um... no.

a sloppy Soulfly maybe, but you're really going to buy www.thenextmetallica.com and forward the address to a myspace page that's just kinda ok?

Don't get me wrong, the music's not horrible, but don't try to sell yourselves as "the next metallica" 'cause that is a lie.

My apologies, but I love Death Magnetic's first and last songs from production (except the snare could be a little bit quieter) to the song writing and everything about "This Was Just Your Life" and "My Apocalypse" are fucking jarring and kick ass - as far as the stuff between those two songs, there's some really good stuff in there, and there some kinda ok/boring stuff in there - but by no means did I expect Ride The Lightning or anything of that nature.

For a band that's been out of the game and basically going from being the supreme kings of THRASH METAL to being this ginormous "groove-rock" thing they were in the 90's, it's a nice balance of the two.

As much as I hated Load & Re-Load in the past, because of this record, I revisited those albums and found good qualities about them - only with the mindset that this was not METALLICA that I grew up listening to, but a whole other group rocking out some pretty heavy grooves. With that mentality, I found I could actually listen to some of the songs and enjoy them.

I was still unable to do that on St. Anger though. Man... that's a tough record to like. That snare is so distracting!

Certainly nothing can and will ever revisit the glory days of the first 4 albums, but when you're nearly twice the age than you were when you wrote that material, it's incredibly difficult to relate to the same things, or keep writing the same things.

I'm in my 30's, and most of my very best writing material came from when I was in high-school through my early 20's because my experiences during that time in my life were so much more intense. And "feelings" as younger people trying to voice opinions are often much more "vehement" and "important" when you're 19 than when you're 36 or whatever. At that point life becomes so much less about you and more about your family, your kids, or whatever.

So I can relate, but still want the fire and the "cool" Metallica I grew up listening to and loving.

I mean, they even put an instrumental on this record! It's a boring one, but shit... they're trying. There's definitely some great qualities on this album. There's also some that kinda put you to sleep, but hey, I didn't ever expect even with Rick Rubin behind the Production, that they would ever put out another "Master Of Puppets" or "And Justice For All" or even Black album.

As much as people bag on the black album, "Sad But True" and "Into The Never" were some great songs! I'd take those any day over "I'm madly in anger with you!!!".

I like the distorted snare. It sounds like and old D.R.I. album or something. It's raw, ugly, and very old school in it's way of production. It just happens to be hugely compressed like all the new-school records are.

Ok... I've been typing waaaaay too long.

That's my 2 cents on this record.

Not that it matters to anyone.

Megadeth can put out album after album in such a short time span because he keeps releasing the same shit over and over again. You people bash Metallica for doing something different on every album, just as there were haters of Fade To Black back in the day-"Metallica sold out! they wrote a ballad!". Now all you same idiots can't get enough of it, as it was "groundbreaking". Death Magnetic is awesome (except for the first single, which I don't like). I actually really liked St Anger. And I'm tired of the argument that if I liked that album that means I'm a fan boy or I have no taste in music. I just like to open my ears to new fucking sounds instead of hearing the same Slayer riff for 10 albums. SA was different, and it took a bit to grow on me, but I really ended up liking it. Load and Reload are terrible, but the last two are really great records, in my opinion.

And the comment of Larz being narcissistic because of his helicopter comment? He's simply making an honest point that it's hard to think back to the days when he was poor. He wasn't rubbing it in anyone's face. Get over yourself and stop being such a jealous little prick.

I first would like to say that I predominantly listen to Death/Brutal Death music and that I have not saturated myself with Metallica in a long time. In all honesty I have respect for Metallica they have pioneered amongst others a style of music that a lot of us on here enjoy. Through the last decade they may have travelled down a path that some fans or ex fans I should say do not agree with. This is an understandable stance when dare say the first four albums had a huge impact on the metal world. The thing that I have found curios through the Metallica Load/Reload and St Anger area is the abuse and reticule that these albums and the band themselves have received. First if you look at the age of when they released the first four albums. They were 20 when they released the first album and mid 20’s when they released Justice which was 20 years ago. Put yourself in their shoes. Think about the way you view & interact with the people that you work with your family your friends, think how you were 20 years ago some of you were not born and then think in 20 years time, I am quite certain that majority, if not all of you are not the same, and that what you would produce, say and interact would be quite different. The mentality through the ages does differ.

The second is why does the band get so many comments left when a topic or article is put up. The only reason I honestly can see is the band must have had an impact in your life, good or bad, but it draws so many people from all over the world to state what they think about this one particular band. I think that a lot of people love this band or did love them and feel that they must state what he or she is feeling to vent or accentuate their point because no matter how much we would like to dispute it, the band is a phenomenon that is rare in the music world especially in the music that we all hold close to hearts. This band has knocked down walls for the likes of other bands that we love so much. The rise of Metallica and some of the bands may not have had their chance. People love to put things down that they may be jealous of or feel that something is owed to them. Its music plain and simple. Like it and buy it or don’t and move on. To waste your time posting threads that’s it’s not Puppets or it’s not the speed of Dyers eve is a waste because it will have no impact on the end result.

I thank Metallica for that and I for one will listen to the new album for what it is and not compare it to Ride the Lightning and try to understand the music that is being produced now from the 44 year olds.

Give it ago otherwise go and buy a Brodequin or Guttural Secrete album.

Everytime they put out an album they're under such a microscope that no other band could be near. I think a great example is all of the people on blabbermouth who openly hate Metallica, yet post about them, download the album so they can bitch about it. They get a huge amount of mainstream press that no other metal band can dream of.

I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. clipping is the new cutting edge? Like St Anger's snare was before that? What are these guys NOT smoking?

We can't write kickass songs anymore, so let's fuck with the production to make us cool.

or Lars since he was seen the most in the clips on missionmetallica during the mixing process.
I think it´s time for them to give Andy Sneap a call if they really care about salvaging them self´s from this awe full mess they are in to re-mix Deaf Magnetic.

Lars and James have to say about the crappy mix.. you know it's coming soon.

Lars will say something like "It's the mood we were, you know, like, feeling in the studio at the time. You know, we are all clipped at somepoint in life and, like, we feel this represents this time in our collective lives. You know."

That was one of the most intelligent posts I have ever heard on this site. Looking at the "big picture" of MetallicA means this band did a lot for continuing metal for bands we listen to today.

I personally wouldn't have found out what real metal is without MetallicA "selling out". It brought the genre to a bigger audience. If no one likes what they did after AJFA then pay no attention to this band. However, like WES666 said, it sparked a reaction for a reason.

Thanks WES666, however I don't think you belong on this site. After such a well put post, it returns to either reading too far (or not far enough) into Lars' quote above or the fucking production value. Sigh..... Escape while you can before this level of stupidity creeps inside your head.

I agree with you. Nevermore's 'enemies of reality' was painful to listen too because of the mix. At least they had the balls to re-release the album re-mixed and remastered. Lets wait and see what Metallica has to say about Snare Magnetic...

so the fact that the CD has clipping doesn't bother you? Why can't they go with the Garage Days production sound? Or how about just engineered correctly? I don't even mind it being 'loud'.. but to have clipping is unexcusable. I record on Protools and I don't clip. Forget to test the levels prior to recording Lars?

The Mastering guy should have rejected the source material instead of attaching his name to such a sub-par engineered CD.

There are a couple of bands that has defined metal, and Metallica is one of those bands. Today there´s too much quantity and less quality. Metallica is just one(and only)of the few bands that MTV plays and the Commercial Media still writes about. "Death Magnetic" is very good album with Metallica,Cheers!!

Lemmy is 63 and Motorhead NEVER changed their approach.
Age has got nothing to do with it: Metallica lost touch with their roots and what they stood for and that's a fact.
They went from "Kill Bon Jovi" to "Let's have Bon Jovi's producer", from "fight the system" to "join the system", from "no videos ever" to "let's make 4 videos every time we release a new album", from "fuck MTV" to "MTV Metallica Tribute". That has got nothing to do with AGE and everything to do with IDEOLOGY, COHERENCE and ATTITUDE.
Bad Religion, Suicidal Tendencies, The Exploited, the already-mentioned Motorhead and countless other bands are living examples of coherence and integrity: Let's NOT find excuses for what Metallica turned into please, it's weak and it's pathetic and it's lying.
But when it comes to music I agree with you: If you don't like them you should just ignore them, and I like Death Magnetic, musically speaking it's pretty ok, 7/10. That doesn't mean I'm not gonna tell it like it is, a fan(atic) I am NOT.

Thanks for writing.

I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.

Does that mean the Vinyl will sound like ass as well?

'everyone expects us to...'

Uh, not everyone.

'why hasn't anyone dethroned us yet'?

What? you are on the throne? The throne of what?

'Support all the great new metal bands...under our wing...'

Do you need to take Diamond Head on a tour of England? I'm sure we won't see Diamond Head, Saxon, Holocaust or Tank as the opening for 'Tallica in the states.
So that makes 2 reasons not to see them live. Not reasons for 'everyone'

'but it makes sense to me one man alone'!

I was suprised - great effort by all of them!
To the haters: You can't expect a "take on the world album".
If Ulrich says that's the best they could deliver, I do believe him

What I do not understand about Lars is:

Where have you been when you could have saved metal in 96? Where the FUCK have you been?

You kept whining that metal is dead, that the world does not need a new Running Wild album, and whatever else. It's okay to change styles if you can't relate to it anymore, but there was no need to drive the nail into the coffin with your public appeal. That's why I didn't give a shit about metallica from 96 to 03, not because of the haircuts.

You did a hell lot for metal, but you jumped back on the wagon BECAUSE you saw it is still alive and well WITHOUT your support. Otherwise you would have been bored.

Have you seen Maiden headlining Rock in Rio to an audience about the size of MOR Moscow 91 seven years ago?

Pantera could have filled that gap. It's a drag In Flames watered up. I guess it's all about the music industry which prevents the bands from "growing" to the level which for instance metallica, megadeth, slayer, anthrax and testament made it to.

If you think none is better than you then give Exodus's Tempo of the Damned a listen... every song stands for itself, heavy, brilliant songwriting and more hooks than a fucking tuna longline.
The difference is your (deserved) big brand name.

Anyway, I'll have a fuckin blunt now and pick up the headphones and play DM to max volume.

Give Witchfinder General a call. They have a new cd. Not sure what the vocals sound like, nor do I expect Blabbermouth to review it, though they should.

The sound quality wasn't the point. The point was that everyone on this site bitches about something with this band. If it wasn't for sound quality it would be for something else. The fact is the album is good but people still find something to complain about. I was on my last straw with this band and they finally delivered. I take it for that and that only.

TH= awesome band with integrity, but not to the extent you have stated, no-one needs to save metal, it is well and alive, it evolves, it stagnates, it has its ups and downs but it will ALWAYS be there. No-one needs to save it, it is a more general concept, not pertaining an individual band, ok Lars???

Thanks Mr. Ulrich for the fun phrase of the day.

I'm not very clear in the first part when he talks about "Genre", is he talking about the "alternative metal" they've been playing for the last 2 decades?.... Or he actually thinks that death, black, etc bands are awaiting their releases to use them as pattern for their records?

Well... I don't think so, unless you have a band and want to try to record an abortion of Nu Metal like St Anger and Death Magnetica!!
