METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' On Track To Sell Half A Million
- Sep. 12, 2008
|
|
|
METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" is on track to sell around 500,000 copies in its first, shortened week on the streets, according to sources cited by Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS.
"Death Magnetic", which received its official worldwide release today (Friday, September 12), is being sold for $5 at Hot Topic retail stores today only. In addition, the store is offering a METALLICA T-shirt for the same price. Limit is two CDs per person.
Traditionally, record labels release new albums in the U.S. on Tuesdays. However, METALLICA opted to make "Death Magnetic" available to the band's fans around the world on the same day.
METALLICA's last CD, "St. Anger", also had an unusual release date after Elektra Records decided to move up its release to Thursday, June 5, 2003 from Tuesday, June 10, 2003 "to ensure that counterfeit copies of the band's first studio album in six years do not proliferate in the marketplace," the label said at the time.
"St. Anger" sold 363,000 copies in its first full week of release to land at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 chart. The album shifted 418,000 copies in the U.S. in its first, shortened week on the streets.
METALLICA's "Re-Load" album sold 435,000 units during its first week in 1997, while 1996's "Load" opened at 680,000. 1991's self-titled "black album" debuted with 598,000 and has since gone on to sell more than 15.2 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

15.2 million for the Black album? That's insane. Without a radio hit like "nothing else matters", I'm sure this one won't reach that but it'll kill their 3 other albums since them.
Hey Fidelman, what were you thinking when you mixed this one?? Got a little trigger happy with compressors and limiters did we?

Something's not quite right......these songs would sound excellent with Master/Black standard production..it's really stark and kinda exploits Lars as, surprise, not that great....oh well, until the next album five years from now, guess we'll have to get NUTZDEEP into Death Magnetic and hope it'll somehow grow on us.........they really need to tap Andy Sneap for the next one.

Death Magnetic is giving Metallica its next multi-platinum album. They have already earned Diamond Status with 1991's Metallica album, selling over 15 million copies worldwide. Other albums have earned them platinum awards across the globe with over millions of copies sold in grand totals but as for individual albums, you gotta take in pre-sales and constant sales since date of release. St. Anger earned them Platinum with 432,000 copies pre-sold. We'll see where Death Magnetic goes in it's shortened week of release when the new albums from other artists arrive in stores this coming Tuesday, basing the release of Death Magnetic on a Friday as opposed to a typical Tuesday.

Or maybe try listening to it on a guality sound system. You know ,something with speakers larger than your boom box or those Spark O Matic Kragen Automotive 5 1/4 inch speakers in your Dodge Dart. Everbody knows you dont like the sound, you tell us everyday. Maybe you should get in touch with Metallica Management and offer to re mix or mix their next studio album. That is if your parents home isnt foreclosed on and you lose your carpeted garage/bedroom/recording studio.

a thousand people every day are complaining about the sound....you make it sound like it's just me who knows when sound quality is completely fucked.
and my system is far more than just quality. It doesn't matter how good your stereo is, or how many EQ's you have, you can't eliminate clipping and distortion once it's in the final mix.
If a stereo could turn down Lars' snare, I'd buy it.

I like the mastering of Saint Anger better. Its the drum sound that got on my nerves. But Death Magnetic is hard to listen to loud, compared to even Saint Anger. Because its pushing in the red all the time..
I would take Bob Rocks pre-2003 production style (and team) over Death Magnetic's any day. They should of gotten Flemming back if they really wanted to relive the glory. That Evile album sounded sweet!

It sounds worse on a good system than a shitty one. It also sounds really bad with head phones. On an Ipod, car stereo, etc. it sounds pretty good. To be honest the only song I really have the biggest bitch about is "The Day That Never Comes" it is super distorted all the way through. The rest of the songs have it but can be enjoyed and listened to. I don't think anyone is joining a band wagon its digital clipping its hurting our ears and giving us head aches with headphones. Maybe your eyes are not like everyone elses but A LOT of people are complaining and they honestly do have a valid point. I went out and bought the album today because I support bands and by music instead of downloading it. I was told the problems with the sound quality would be fixed by this release. They were not. The stupid thing is that METALLICA ADMITTED TO THE SOUND PROBLEMS and said they were going to FIX them by the release. So trying to argue the problems is stupid considering the very band you are defending admitted it.
That said I am done the album is what it is unless they decide to fix it. I tried using some software to remove the distortion in "The Day That Never Comes" but it is really in the mix somewhere because I can not get it out. Other than that the music is great and I am just sad that such a great album is a bit ruined by some poor mistakes on the engineers end. Maybe the vinyl will be from a different master as they usually are.

I had no idea it was being sold for five dollars. I thought I was getting a good deal when it was ten dollars, now I find out that it's being sold for half that. And t-shirts are normally at least ten.
Still, it's a good album. The track order reminds me of Pantera albums. They put the best songs first, then there might be one in the middle that stands out, and the last song's good. And "The End of the Line" is awesome.

Not even Slayer did, their Diabolus in Musica and God Hates Us All albums, while still decent, are filled with nu/groove influences. Christ Illusion's pretty good but still with downtuned guitars and slightly "nu" influences, I hope they go back to pure thrash metal with the new one.
The new Metallica's pretty good, 7/10, it's NOT thrash, there are some thrashy riffs here and there, it's basically hard rock with some thrash influences, but considering we're talking about out of touch rockstars who totally sold out, it's more than decent.
Megadeth did sell out indeed and are still not playing thrash, so did Anthrax, big time.
EXODUS are pretty much the only one staying true to their roots, even though their last three album are thrash/groove, they never went nu metal or alternative at all. Props to them.

Is that half a million sales, or half a million units shipped to retail stores?
This thing sounds like shit - the production is absolutely terrible and the material itself is just a bunch of rehashed ideas from the early albums. With Death Magnetic, it seems that the magical musical well has run dry and they've just sat there and basically traced the outline, colored it in and told everyone "they drew it themselves" A far cry from the once innovative and creative unit otherwise known as Metallica.
Mediocre pop, that sounds like it was produced by Lars' kid or something. What a fucking embarrasing mess of an album from A to Z.

Its little girls like him that keep this place funny cause while he is talking shit about a under produced rushed piece of shit we sit here and laugh at him.
See the reason this album sold like this is actually quite simple, the name. Once people heard the new metallica was coming out they got excited. Then they bring home the cd and cry like most of the fangirls did at what a joke they have become. Then they pick up the phone and call their one friend and tell them how it sucks, then that friend dont buy it. So yeah if the keep up these numbers t will be amazing but we know once the word is out on lars WAY TO LOUD DRUM and gay songs this album will stop selling anything.

I bought a physical copy today, mainly to get the best sound quality out of it. The mix still sucks (same clipping issues) but at least I'm not getting the distortion you get from 128 kbps mp3s. And yes, there's a difference between clipping flaws and mp3 distortion.
The album kicks ass though. You have to be in some serious denial not to admit that. Just gonna have to live with the mix problems I guess... they're not going away. I already own lots of great albums with shitty production anyway

I had to post again. A giant thrash festival would be awesome. It would be Ozzfest, but better. You get the more well-known bands like Testament, Exodus, Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Then some of the more obscure bands like Death Angel, Sacred Reich, Flotsam and Jetsam, Voivod, and whoever else you want to throw in. Put a couple of newer bands like Warbringer, Municipal Waste, Skeletonwitch, and Evile, and you've got a hell of a tour. As long as they (and their fans) don't kill each other, that is.
Who knows, maybe the Cavaleras would be willing to join Sepultura again.

If you'd actually keep an open mind and buy the album, you'd find that there is no clipping on the album itself. Ask anyone who actually bought it today, they'd tell you themselves
So shut the fuck up and go jerk off while listening to AC/DC or whatever the hell it is you guys worship ============
Did you analyze the wavs thru a DAW or something? How do YOU know theres no clipping?

the real album has the exact same problems as the MP3's. Unfortunately there's no change in sound quality at all. And yes there is clipping. Anything that pushes the 0Db threshold enough to distort it is clipping. If you don't mind the sound the way it is then fine, it's still a good album, but don't say that it doesn't distort and clip.
this album would be killer if it was remastered. Andy Sneap for the next one.

Yes indeed, but the so-called "Big 4" were Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Exodus and Testament are great bands indeed, but even Testament, even though they've largely redeemed themselves starting with "Low" didn't stay true to their roots, two words: "The Ritual", while being a good album, is hardly thrash, wouldn't you say? I still think Exodus are the best, most coherent and respectable of old american thrash bands (In Europe the crown goes to Sodom) but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna listen to new albums by the "Big 4" and if I like them, I'm gonna buy them. As I've already said a few times, the new Metallica's pretty good, considering they're out of touch rockstars.

fuck it i'll admit it. I doubted like a motherfucker that they could still be glorious Metallic of Old, and I was right. Nor is it the Metallica of the last 12 or so years. This is something new from these guys. A strait culmination of all the bullshit theyve gone through for the last 25 years. Nothing will ever replace what they did in the 80s, but I actually think they have something new to contribute to Metal in general now. There may be a shit load of haters of Metallica out there, as we see just by looking at the threads on every Metallica story on Blabbermouth, but theres probably five times more Metallica lovers out there. We've all been waiting for something like this from these guys since Load, nobody can deny that, and here it is. I fucking despised "The Day That Never Comes" when I first heard it. I laughed at how bad they were trying to sound like the old them, like they were a tribute band of themselves. But when I heard "Broken, Beat, & Scarred" and "My Apocalypse", and I mean Really heard them, shit started to change for me. I mean FUCK the riffs in "BBS" are heavy and catchy as fuck like some Justice, but again in the way that the "Newest" Metallica would play it. I felt like it got better with each subsequent song they released And now that I have the other half of the album to reallllly digest I finally feel like those men have still got some METAL UP THEIR ASS!

Sales don't mean quality you know. Unless you think Britney, Christina, Nelly, Mariah, Michael Jackson, 50 Cent and the likes make quality music too. Sales are the result of heavy promotion and Metallica have got that in spades, being on Warner Bros. And I like the new album, it's a 7/10 imo.

Come on at least try and sound like an adult with half a brain in your post. To deny the clipping and digital distortion because you don't happen to hear it is pathetic. I can show you a spectral graph on "The Day That Never Comes" and show you multiple clips. I can show you "Cyanide" and how it clips into the red multiple times. You know some people actually work with music than just having a beer and blasting it out of your car. Others are very much into the production side of music and things like mixing and mastering. You come on here like some idiot and try to call us haters and other things a 10 year old might say when we are speaking the truth. There is 100% honest evidence of this that various software programs will show.
I bought the CD and I like it. I am happy Metallica came out with a killer album I am just not happy about the poor production. Why should I be and why should you? You are saying it is ok for a band to charge you for something that can technically damage your hearing and speakers over time. It is ok to charge me good money for an inferior product. This is why society has gotten so low over the years. People just don't want to stand up for anything and any people that do get riducled and have stones thrown at them. The CD was $5.00 so I can't really bitch too much but like I said the band came out and said WE REALIZE THERE IS A SOUND PROBLEM AND IT WILL BE FIXED BY THE ALBUM'S RELEASE. It was not fixed and they lied... end of story.
I am sorry my opinion is not the same as all of these super fan boys. I am sorry the band Metallica can do know wrong and you are so closed minded that even when someone like Ballz or me says... we like the music... we hate the production... you still feel the need to bash us. I am moving on from this and will not discuss this production any further because it is set in stone as one poster said and going on about it doesn't solve anything. I wish it was something I could use software to remove and clear things up but even an expensive WAVES plug-in doesn't help. I give up and hope for the vinyl release to be improved.

Geesus - I went and bought the CD and am listening to it now. Who the f$#* signed off on this production? Why is this band continually plauged with production issues? They can afford the best - they're supposed to be the Led Zeppelin of our generation fer cryin' out loud! Bro - I'm in a band, and I just produced our latest CD on a DAW. My CD sounds way better than this! And I'm an average Joe! IF my recording sounded like this going to press, I would be HORRIFIED. If I had paid someone to be in charge of the sound, they would be FIRED!
That said, the material is a great return to form. I am 44 myself just like the band, and I've been on board since Ride The Lightning. I want love this, but just like St. Anger, it's hard to listen to. Of course, this is my first listen. Maybe my ears will get used to it. I'm not keeping up hope though...
Again, these guys are frickin' millionaires - can't they hire guys that will produce a set of music that sounds worthy of their legend?
End of rant.

If you pussies were true metalheads, your ears would be shot like MINE are... and, you wouldn't give a fuck about so-called clipping, etc...
BTW, the actual album sounds better than the downloads I had previously so, I really think most folks bitching haven't heard the real thin yet....
If you're bitching about the sound quality of an album you stole, then fuck off...
If you're bitching about an album you spent $5 on (like I did.... less than the price of a movie...) you should also fuck off... Stop being such a dick & enjoy the G.D. thing for what it is... OR don't... Move on & get a fucking life... I love the cd so, I don't give a fuck if no one else on Earth does.... It beats anything else I've heard lately... Anyone who claims the reason for Metallica's success is due to the fact that they have a clever marketing campaign is a complete imbecile. This album is great and is the best work they have done since their late 80s. The numbers speak for themselves, and 500,000 copies in half a week beats out 99.9% of what ANY musician can do, regardless of their genre.
With all respects to the Beatles, Elvis, and The Roling Stones, Metallica is hands down the greatest band of all time (I say this because the aforementioned bands were not in the same time period as Metallica, thus making the comparison incomplete).
Anyone dumb enough to bash Metallica is either jealous, a hypocrite, or both.

I was gonna type a big explaination of what was wrong with the album and I don't have to because he already said everything.
What I'd like to know is HOW IN THE HELL DID THIS EVER GET TO US TO HEAR IT ALL DISTORTED AND SHITTY LIKE THAT???? i'VE LOVED RICK RUBIN'S CHOICES ALL THE WAY DOWN THE LINE BUT MAYBE THE MOTHERFUCKER SHOULD HAVE SHOWED UP TO THE MASTERING SESSION TO MAKE SURE IT WASN'T DESTROYED AT THE END. C'MON FELLAS, YOU'RE ALL WAAAAY BETTER THAN THIS.
Metallica and Rick Rubin together?? There's no weak links in this chain so I cannot comprehend them putting out what amounts to their best album since the "Black" album and dropping the ball at the mastering/final limiting stage. It's fucking ridiculous.
There's 10,000 bands on MySpace that nobody will ever care about with properly recorded/mastered songs. There is no excuse for this and I for one, want a re-mastered version that doesn't clip!!! Digital distortion sounds horrible!!!
Songwise?? I think it's the best album they could have made. I love James Hetfield and I want him to do so well . . . . great player/singer/writer . . . . one of the best metal guys ever.

I think Rick Rubin just collected a pay check on this one and actually didn't do much than have a couple talks with the band here and there. He used to be one of the best but lately he has become lazy and is never even at the sessions anymore. He was known for some amazing analog recordings just listen to albums like Danzig II or III for example. This just proves that sometimes a band just needs to shut up and let the engineer do their work. No doubt in my mind that Lars holds a big responsibility in this mainly because he is present during the mixing in a lot of videos. It is mainly his drums that distort (snare and cymbals) but there are places where the guitars distort too. It sounds like a lot of it is coming from the low end spectrum. I spent a good hour trying various plug-ins to see if I could remove enough of it to make it sound better and sadly I could not nothing. The main song that kills me and is unlistenable in my ears is "The Day That Never Comes" the rest do clip but its not nearly as bad as that one song that clips all through the last 3/4. Like one big clip.

I am one of the biggest Metallica fans around and I will be the first one to tell you Lars is not a talented drummer. Lars is an asshole. Lars is a businessman not a rock star. But lars is solid. His drumming is never over the top, and other than the mix job on St. Anger he never over shadows the songs.
I mean listen to Justice on a good Stereo. You can see how odd Lars' drumming is. Even James likes to rip on Lars' drum technique. When he met Lars James didnt even think that he had ever played drums before. He hooked up with Lars out of a desire to get on a record, which Lars already had a spot on.
The new album is great. Ive been through it on Guitar Hero 3 about 5 times now. Ive listened to the cd a few times too and each time it gets better. It sticks in your head. It has a lot of the great qualities of Justice with a modern, more mature approach.
I never got why people bashed Justice. Yes the bass doesnt exist. But on Rock band you can download Blackened and Justice and it sounds amazing. The bass is up. The drums are down a little and all the crunch you could ever want is there.
Metallica is the thinking man's metal band. Slayer, Behemoth, Nile, Exodus, Testament etc.... are favored by people that are one dimensional drunken wife beaters.

I think the way this album has sold so far, it's not only good for Metallica, but for the genre. Cuz when you got a band in this genre selling almost half a million this early after it's release, that's an awesome thing, cuz it'll draw people who probably otherwise wouldn't listen to it, give it a chance.
I'm curious to see this half a million broken down. How many pre-sale orders compaired to first day release sales. I'm sure presales were greater then first day, but I'm curious to see the difference.

I should have known surfing Blabbermouth today would be Metallica Central...
500K is definitely impressive, but is in line with their last few CD's first week sales numbers.
I'd also like to point out, as with many "big" artists, this disc is priced to sell by the chains. The Hot Topic promo, $9.98 at Target, $9.99 at Best Buy... So, naturally it's flying off the shelves. Also, nice enticement for old geezers like me who can say "hmmm, read a lot about it, and if I dislike it, I can recoup most of my money on Ebay..."
Not that it worked with me. Metallica have been hit-or-miss with me since 1991, give or take... (trying to be diplomatic, here...)
I am curious to hear it, though, not just for the new songs, but also for the whole engineering controversy. I can handle it, I think my hearing's starting to go anyway. What do you expect when you've listened to metal 25 some-odd years? I'll borrow my brother's copy after he checks it out...

You are a bit narrow-minded and simplistic. It´s not that simple.
`Dimmu, Cannibal, Cradle, Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Pantera......´
OF COURSE I´M WITH YOU in the sense that I love all of those bands (not COF sorry), I prefer their INTEGRITY to the one of Metallica of course and I always will, BUT I love their new album because AT LEAST it sounds to the Metallica we like DESPITE ITS FAULTS. I ALWAYS QUESTION every new Metallica album at a first glance because I haven´t trusted them in the 90´s and in 2003. Ok, so I´m with you in a sense but don´t be so extreme, narrow-minded and simplistic and be more reasonable.

I love the same type of groups you do, the ones with REAL INTEGRITY, but Metallica is Metallica.
