METALLICA: Making Of 'Death Magnetic'; Video Available - Sep. 13, 2008
Behind-the-scenes footage from the making of METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" album can be viewed below.

According to FMQB.com, last week's FMQB radio broadcast, "The World Premiere of Death Magnetic", was heard on 175+ stations across the United States and Canada, setting a new bar for clearance levels of an FMQB Productions event. The program was broadcast live from METALLICA headquarters in San Rafael, California and featured all four members of METALLICAJames Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo — sitting down for a conversation with FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins.

one complain about Death Magnetic is that James seems that didn't spend time to develop his vocal techniques for the album...if you compare the vocals from Unforgiven II with Unforgiven III...you'll see what I'm talking about.

As far as I am concerned you can choke on that petition. I am sick of bands waiting three+ years to put out an album. Is it perfect? NO. Is it better than I expected? YES. I am sick of people whining about every little thing. Enjoy the music or don't. Bitch about Lars drumming or don't. If you could produce it better you would not be starting a petition YOU WOULD BE PRODUCING A CD.

I got ahold of Death Magnetic a week before the release date, so I've listened to it many times over. I'm just as much of a Metallica critic than the next guy, because I've listened to them for enough years and respect their body of music. Here is Metallica's career in a short summary:

Kill 'em All: Trendsetting masterpiece

Ride/Puppets/Justice: The Holy Trinity of Metallica albums, Puppets being their best produced album of the three. Justice was progressive in complexity and kept a solid theme throughout the album. My only gripe on that album is that there was virtually no bass anywhere to be found (and should one day be re-mixed with Trujillo and re-released. This would be a cash cow among die-hard fans, considering how commercially successful DM will be).

Black: So overly commercialized that it is annoying to hear 16 years later. Understandably if it wasn't for this album the band would have been the force it is today, but I would be content with not hearing Sad But True EVER AGAIN. Respectable album though.

Load/Reload: Hate them all you want, but there were a few gems on it, although most of it was country crap. Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are fucking badass.

Garage Inc.: Part 2 = badass. Part 1= who gives a shit.

S&M: Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

St. Anger: Don't even count this as an official Metallica album.

DEATH MAGNETIC: Look, you can pick this album apart until your blue in the face, but the fact is that if you don't like this record, you probably should just sell your Ride/Puppets/Justice albums that you hold on so dearly to. This is the best your gonna get from this band, and I think its fucking phenomenal. There are unique song structures throughout the whole thing, and Hammett's solo's are among the quickest and most innovative of his career. Hetfield's vocals blow away the disaster of St. Anger...he sounded like shit because that album as a whole didn't even sound in tune. If I could be picky, I wish the bass was turned up higher, but Hetfield's playing is what defines the band's overall sound. Lars is still a douche but they have the final say, its their band. Not much that can be done there, unfortunately.

The point is, don't hate on this record. Respect it because it blew away most people's expections. It's funny, after reading these boards for years I have seen a RECORD LOW in Metallica haters over the past week. And if you wanna hate on the production...do you hear a trash can for a snare drum? Didn't think so, so shut up.

This band still owns after all of the ups and downs and you have to give them credit for it! LET THE FLOODGATES OPEN

1000% agree, I love the album as it is with its flaws, it´s fucking Metallica in 2008. Don´t try to compare it to any other album, that´s pointless, and don´t bash for the sake of bashing, you´re not going to get any better like this in 2008, consider it as itself. For me to find anything worthwhile in their 90´s albums is sooooooooooo hard, I did my best to do so but sorry I can´t. Well, St. Anger shouldn´t belong to their discography, though it was necessary at the time for their personal circumstances, I think it reflected theirs (muddy, dark times).

At least these are clips with real music, what a bunch of clever marketing motherfuckers, to keep you attracted before the album came out with shitty non-music clips just to be there and pay attention in order not to forget that they are there. They made you angry, but you were ALWAYS looking at them, how clever of them.

This album's pretty awesome. Surprised me.

It sounds great. I don't know if the mp3s you ripped off sound bad, but I have the actual CD and it sounds great.

Best snare sound on a Metallica album since Ride the Lightning.

I think anyone who has a problem with the production of the album is an idiot. The production DOESN'T sound like ...And Justice, no matter how many people say it. The music does, yeah (better I think actually... Justice had moments but wasn't my favorite). The production IS a bit claustrophobic.... but nowhere near the degree I expected from everyone's whining.

I'm glad they've gone back to sounding like Metallica and we don't have to depend any longer on bands like Machine Head (who has their moments) to deliver something that sounds like somewhat like Metallica. Speaking of.... Machine Head's albums are much worse as far as noisy mastering. You can't honestly tell me that's better sounding than Death Magnetic.

Just let it grow on you. ALL of Metallica's classic albums were growers.

Im a huge Stuck Mojo fan and have been for about 8 years now. Rich Ward WOULD be disappointed by his CLOSE MINDED FANS. If you know anything about Mojo or what they stand for youd never say anything like that.

Rich Ward DOES NOT SOLO but on a few songs. They are short and to the point. Rich Ward HIMSELF says he cant solo. The shout at the Devil cover Isnt WARD playing. The southern born killers cd had like 1 solo and it was short and nothing to the complexity of Hammet.

Rich is great at what he does, melodies and super Heavy Chugging but to refer to him in any terms as a lead guitarist is just ridiculous. He is and always will be a rythm guitarist.

Actually I do both with way less high-end gear as Greg Fidelman, so I'm stunned to hear something average instead of something mindblowing...

Fidelman is an amazing engineer/mixer who worked on extremely varied production with a constant level of quality/creativity, so I'm all the more disappointed by what he did with the great sounding takes he recorded with Metallica...

The song´s sound so much better in these clip´s and on the demo version that was posted also online, it´s much more enjoyable to listen to this and it really brings new life to the song´s.
How could they fuck it up so badly on the actual cd, they have to go back to the studio and remix it properly and bring down the snare and overhead´s and push the kick drums a bit up in the mix, and the bass should be higher in the mix cause Rob´s sound is awesome in these clips, also the rhythm guitar and vocals should and have little bit of reverb and be mixed higher.
They should really do this and re-release the cd and those who have already bought it should be able to exchange it for the re-released version.
The way it sound´s now is just a clipping distortion and snare assault on the hearing, i ain´t buying it until it´s fixed properly.

It was mostly from people crying about the way the mp3's sounded when it was leaked last week. Yeah, there was clipping and over compression/limiting on those mp3's and i figured it was from the guy that ripped the disc, and those thoughts were confirmed when i bought and listened to the actual cd on Friday, it sounds clean. Good overall assessment of their career to date. I personally think Load/Reload would have made one solid single disc, had they dropped the artsy-fartsy intentions and trimmed the fat.

Don't agree about going back to AJFA and having Trujillo re-do the bass lines, though I agree the bass should have been more prominent. I've been disappointed by the final mix since I bought it the day it came out in 1988!

I'm definitely disappointed with the mix. Holy distortion, Batman (especially on The Day that Never Came). My God, I will never listen to this under headphones, my hearing is starting to go as it is!

I am curious, though, about the term "clipping". I'm man enough to admit I don't know what the hell everyone's referring to. Ballzworth? Mose's Beard?
