METALLICA Interview Cancelled Over Controversial 'Death Magnetic' Review
- Sep. 14, 2008
|
|
METALLICA's European record label Universal Music cancelled the band's interview with the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan last week after one of the paper's writers admitted in his review of METALLICA's new album that he illegally downloaded an alternate version of the CD via the Internet. In his three-star review (out of a possible five-star rating) of METALLICA's long-awaited new effort, "Death Magnetic", Jonn Jeppsson mentioned an edited version of the CD that he obtained through the Swedish web site The Pirate Bay, which bills itself as "the world's largest BitTorrent tracker." According to Jeppsson, "Death Magnetic: Better, Shorter, Cut" contains the same 10 cuts that are found on the regular version of "Death Magnetic" but with "one to four minutes of each song trimmed off." He wrote, "Once the songs are saved from their fatsuits — compare this to people who can lose half their body weight and you can sense how many times too often the choruses are repeated on the original tracks — they're not just glaringly precise and intense, they really live up to expectations." Speaking to Dagens Media about the review and Universal's decision to cancel Sydsvenskan's scheduled interview with METALLICA, Universal Music Sweden president Per Sundin stated, "The reviewer is referring to a BitTorrent where someone has altered the original songs. The reviewer explains exactly where one should go in order to download the file that totally infringes on a copyright. It's not only an illegal file, but an altered file. The reviewer also writes that this is how the album should have sounded." He continued, "File-sharing of music is illegal. Period. There's nothing to discuss. That fact that Sydsvenskan has a writer that has downloaded this music illegally and then makes mention of an illegal site in his review is totally unacceptable to us.” Sundin added that Universal Music has not yet determined what impact this incident will have on the label's relationship with Sydsvenskan. "We live in symbiosis with each other and we send them our artists' record for free for review," he explained. "But if they download the records illegally instead, then there's no point in doing that." Meanwhile, the "enterprising young audio engineer" who claimed responsibility for the edited version of "Death Magnetic" e-mailed the MetalSucks web site on Thursday, September 11 and explained that "basically, I just wanted a new album by METALLICA that I could listen to without getting irritated by some lame lyrics or ploddy riffs that go nowhere for three minutes before turning into something cool. The original version of 'Death Magnetic' is the best thing that they've done since '…And Justice For All', but it ain't great. My version is great."

I admit, I download. I download a lot. But I also buy...a lot. Just yesterday, spent over 250 on brand new CDs at HMV. The new Metallica album was among those purchases. I download because I want a taste of what's to come. If I like the cd, I'll buy it. If not, I'll delete the files. Plain and simple.
That reviewer is a moron...should be fired for his stupidity.

It was stupid of the reviewer to 'illegally' download an edited version of the album and mention it in the review (although I think in Europe downloading generally is not illegal, while uploading is). Still, I'm sure Metallica's representatives would not have protested if the album had received a glowing review. I guess Metallica just can't handle the truth: Three stars out of a possible five stars is the most that Death Magnetic is worth (if that). Personally, I don't think any amount of editing or remixing would be able to save these lacklustre songs from mediocrity.

I watched the "Classic Rock" Dvd on the black album. Bob Rock seemed to have been PISSED when he took the black album in for mastering and discovering clipping. He's probably laughing his ass off at the band now, listening to the abortion of mix and master the new album is. They blame HIM for the last 15 years or so? Its THEIR fault they went the direction they did. He didn't put a gun to their heads. Its just like with Jason, Flemming, etc- blaming others when things dont go right or using them as scapegoats. Fuck these assholes. At least with Mustaine, he's so nuts at least you can predict what he does (he's consistently nuts). With Metallica, they're just assholes. Period.

This "reporter" 's point doesn't make any sense. He wanted the album to review which would include the "lame lyrics" and the "ploddy riffs that go nowhere for three minutes". These negatives should be reflected in the review.

I gotta say, I'm bummed with the mastering. I made it a point to go out and buy the CD, especially since the mp3s sounded like ass... and the actual disc aint that much better, i'm afraid. It's nowhere near the clipping-fest that was the Noise Records edition of Bathory "Hammerheart" (read: unlistenable!), but it's still a bit of a let down.
Nice packaging, tho.

making a song "long" just so it can be long is not creating a good song, it's creating a long song. long and good are 2 different things. for a long song to be good, it shouldn't feel long and short song shouldn't feel short. the songs should floow it's sourse in a logiocal manner and if that happens, duration shouldn't matter.
meattallica writing really longs that feel really long, means they camn't write songs, they write a "part-fest".
which is cool, if you wanna be bored or have a.d.d.

and if you like that poke around and you can find st. panger...just dont tell lars, he'll get pissed. at least with st. panger i was able to retain all the songs individually and cut 74 minutes down to 24. with life copacetic i just made all the good bits (ie, all the parts that sounded like the champs or hirax) into one long 15 minute song.

Fuck, I'd cancel too if my music was illegally downloaded and altered in some form. I have the full and complete version and I burned a copy of it from my buddy's store-bought copy. I was with him when he bought it. Is it illegal to borrow a friends copy, rip it to the computer and burn it to a blank disc? No because you are not using it for commercial purposes. I use it to listen to in the car, in the cd player or anywhere in the privacy of my own home.

Summer 2003, when I was looking for a job after college, I sat there with St. Anger and did the same thing as the guy mentioned in the article. But I was never as pompous, and, to the best of my knowledge, I know of all two copies of that experiment in two-track editing. I will say the CD I wound up with was just over 42 minutes long.

How long did that fucking take you? And dont say 10 minutes, cause I KNOW it took you a while. That shit is ludicrous! I love the band but wouldnt put half or even 10 percent of the time you guys put into this shit, and you supposedly hate this shit and think it sucks and that theyre downhill and shit?? Fuck man, do something better with your time, like get a girlfriend or start smoking weed or better yet! Start a band so you can make better records than Metallica! What you're doing now is a big fucking waste of your life! And when you realize it it will be too late!! Then again, you should try to get as much of it in as possible before the golden age of the internet is over and there is no more anonymity! Imagine that! Imagine if anyone reading your annoying ass posts could find your address and info out! I bet you would act differently than the absolutely fucking annoying cowardly hide behind your computer cum bubbles that you are! I like the version of 'Helloween' by the same group that's trimmed down for the video, but alas my CD has the long version. For a dollar I bought a used Don McLean cd not knowing that 'American Pie' was the first half of the song only. My mom ordered the 45 rpm single of 'Neanderthal Man' by 10cc because the cool ending part that she remembers, but again, alas, it was edited down. My brother and I bought the 45 rpm of Rush's 'Spirit of Radio' again edited down.
Metallica, it works both ways. Seems like we all get bit in the ass once in awhile. I guess if us the lowly consumers have to put up with it, so can the high and mighty 'Tallica.
Anybody ever get that Lightning to the Nations from Diamond Head on Metal Blade? There's some of the intro to the song 'It's Electric' that's missing from the CD version. What can I do about that? Not much I suppose, except never listen to it again.

As far as bootlegs go...a guy on 1310 AM radio (Dallas, TX) last night was playing Led Zep bootleg songs (and said so during the show). So...? Did that cost Zep anything?

Downloading music hurts the RECORD COMPANIES, NOT THE ARTISTS. Want proof?
When you go into your local music store and purchase an album, for say $20 USD(including taxes and all other charges that may apply), the ARTIST will be lucky to see 5% of the money you paid for that album.
You know why there is no new Mercyful Fate album? Illegal downloading hurt the RECORD COMPANY, if they can't make any money off of it, they won't give the artist a contract to make the next album. It's simple economics that I guess you failed in school. Can't make money off of an artist? Don't give the artist a record deal, simple as that. Can make money off of an artist? The artist is a huge hit that's topping Billboard charts? Sign that artist to a multi-deal contract to produce X number of albums through said record company!
Wanna know how touring is done? Through the RECORD COMPANY(see the trend yet?). If album sales are extremely low in that area, they won't allow the artist to tour there, why not? OH MY GOD!!!!! NO MONEY CAN BE MADE!!!! This is where the ARTIST makes most of their money(read: when I say artist, im portraying a band) by touring, NOT by record sales. Any merchandise you purchase from a band while on tour(tshirts/etc.) is the profit the ARTIST makes, NOT the RECORD company.

True, but those "million others" probably weren't prefessional music reviewers like this guy was. Which makes him a douchebag for posting a review that improperly reflects upon an album whose contents that he even admitted he obtained through probable illegal means. Not to mention that the copy of the album he obtained was different from what "Death Magnetic" actually sounds like. This could give Metallica valid grounds to even sue the reviewer for defamation of character which after the terrible PR fiasco the band had to whether from Napster is the last thing they and their fans want.

Well, no. Not the same. I paid $14.99 + sales tax for the vinyl. I legitimately OWN it. Maybe I'll frame the receipt?
It's like test driving a car before you buy. only so much money to waste on music...bought gasoline lately?
If I was a professional music reviewer, or a radio station DJ...I'd get it for FREE. Then sell it to a used CD store to buy beer, like they do.
Ever notice how many used cd's have a stamp, cut-out, or a punch/mark thru the UPC code?. those are promos. The band did not get paid for those. In fact, the band PAID for those, as promotional costs.

on the money...the way I remember it was, back in 94-95: The record label can cover all production/marketing costs for less than $1.00 a disc. (unless you signed Axl Rose).
Record label sells to distributor for $6-7 each.
Distributor sells to local record stores for $9.25-$10.50 each. At my friend's CD store, they paid $1.25 PER DISC for shipping.
And when BestBuy had a first week sale for $10.99, they could not match the price. Their own costs exceeded that. This is why BestBuy and Wal-Mart are two of the four biggest music retailers in the US and local music stores either find a niche (Death metal) or go out of business.
So BestBuy and Wal-Mart split the distribution money with the label and put the local distr. companies out of business. (OneStop in Dallas, for example).
Who wins? Not sure. plenty of losers in this situation.

yeah but.........
Since the artists actually work for the record companies, and since record companies are who pays the artist and authorizes recording sessions, if it hurts the record company, it hurts the artist more. Don't believe me? Tell me how many arenas or sheds have been headlined by bands who have never had a record deal? Furthermore, who is the youngest rock band to headline an arena or amphitheatre this summer? And I'm not talking a package like Warped or Rockstar energy either. In Charlotte that honor initially went to 3 Doors Down, but since they cancelled, I think Kid Rock wins. And he's had a major deal for 10 years! Every other younger rock band ended up in the clubs. Why? because of theft.

How does the vinyl compare to the cd version/flacs/mp3s? I downloaded the torrent when it leaked (and I was always going to buy it) liked it initially, but now I'm really getting into this record in a serious way. Sure, it's not all great (Broken, Beat, and Scarred, I'm looking at you) but the best stuff on the record (End of the Line, All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss) kicks ass.
So anyway, any opinions on the quality of the vinyl release as compared to the CD? I've been burned by crackly, shrieky new vinyl pressings before.

Being swedish, I was able to read the review and he did review the full version of the album, but did reference to the cut version. So it wasnt just a review of the cut version as some of you seem to think. Over and out.

I download what I'm interested in, I buy what's worthwhile. If I don't buy your record it's because I didn't like it. It's unfortunate, for bands, such as Metallica, that we live in a modern time when people have the freedom to sample music BEFORE they purchase it.
If I were you, you whining, complaining pieces of shit (and that's anyone bitching about downloading) I'd, first, make a record that was worth a shit. Second, I would tour the fuck out of it, like most smart bands do because anyone with half a brain in the music biz today knows that revenue comes from MERCH, CD sales, and concert tickets.
Yeah, I download, but guess what? Most of the shit I download I wouldnt' pay for anyways so you complaining "artists" should happy I'm hearing your SHIT at all. If you're album is worth the 12.99, 13.99, 35.99, whatever it is to buy, then I'll buy it. If it's not, well then I guess you should have spent more time writing something worthwhile.
I'm not going to pay for WAY OVER-PRICED CDs just because Lars tells me it's not good for his checkbook. Make me pay what a CD is worth ($5 at best) and I'll buy every fucking record that comes out.
But you know, that's not going to happen now is it?
Suck it, quasi-intellectual, mainstream rhetoric regurgitating morons.

I love Metallica, but i have to admit, the songs are way too long on the new album, the lyrics are shit..... Lars' drums are waaaaaay too much in the front...... Vocals are too much in the front... Which leaves all the guitars in the back..... which is not what i want from a metal album... I want guitars.........
It is pretty sad, when the song is at 3 minutes and I skip to the next one cause i know I got 5 more minutes of this shite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The album sucks.... plain and simple........

Just look and don't download anything though, ok you guys. We need to all go out and buy the album and lots of metallicock merc. so Lars can fineally get his gold plated shark bar. How is Lars susposted to fill his mansion up with 12m paintings if people keep downloading his music. It makes me so angry I could just spit!
