METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Tops UK Chart - Sep. 14, 2008
METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic" has entered the UK chart at position No. 1 — ahead of Scottish band GLASVEGAS' self-titled debut, which came in at No. 2.

The original release date for "Death Magnetic" was last Friday (September 12). However, the METALLICA album was released early, with shops selling copies on Wednesday (September 10).

GLASVEGAS' James Allan told NME.com he never expected to beat METALLICA in the album chart battle.

"I was surprised at how many it [the GLASVEGAS album] was selling," he said. "But I knew METALLICA were going to bring out an album in the same week. They're enormous.

"If it was the biggest R&B artist in the world [it would have been the same chart situation]. That's the kind of level they're at. They're the biggest metal band in the world."

An HMV spokesman confirmed to BBC News on Thursday (September 11) that "Death Magnetic" had gone on sale in the UK ahead of its planned September 12 release.

He said: "We were advised [on Wednesday] by the label [Vertigo] that because it's been leaked quite heavily, they should bring forward its physical release and allow retailers to merchandise it. That was the communication we received and we've responded to that. I'd imagine it's a similar picture across the whole of retail."

Music Week magazine reported that more than 2,500 copies of the album had been sold on CD by the end of Wednesday.

"Death Magnetic is a fantastic effort from Metallica, however many of us are disappointed by the poor audio quality present on the album.

Please sign this petition so that we can hopefully either get it remastered, or re-mixed, depending on where the problems occurred at some point, or to ensure that the next Metallica album does not suffer from the same issues, or get caught up in the loudness war that is ruining modern music."

The problem is personal mp3 players... They aren't that loud to begin with, older albums that were mixed and mastered seperately sound like shit on new devices. The solution would to be to offer two types of masters, one for compression, and one for those of us who have decent stereo systems and know how to use a volume knob and EQ.

I however disagree with the Mix issue. Getting rid of the loud snare was very easy for me with an EQ and I still don't get the complaint at all. It is mixed well, it's just the mastering I don't like...

...still reeling from seeing meshuggah in Manchester last week.

Unbefuckinglievable.

Best drumming I've ever seen. The whole band were tight as fuck from the off.
made Lombardo at his best look like peter criss at his worst.

Yeah yeah metallica rule blah blah bow down blah blah

You really need to check these guys out live if you get the chance and realise that along with gojira they are setting the fucking bar well out of reach of tired old hasbeens like metallica

And gojira will destroy shit like InFlames when they support them soon.

By the way, whiners, its a fucking message board. Anyone can post whatever the fuck they like. Get over it.

wozzilla is a big fuckin tool. He cant handle the fact that most people like this album. And it´s a comeback for Metallica. AC/DC in all glory, but they dont have a fuckin chance against Metallica.

And one more thing, he is a fan of AC/DC and then talks about recycled riffs. HAHA.

i'm completely on your side. And, in my opinion, this has nothing to do with metallica or any other band, the record companies are responsible for that, with radio and tv networks as their partners in crime.
This thing has been going on for years, but lately has become insane.
I don't think we can get them to remix and remaster the album, but an impressive amount of people demanding for a change could maybe make the artists consider a change in the future.

This is just rehash worse than Slayer's last two. The thrash gods are dead in the USA. I agree Rubin mashes it up. They act like they don't care what they release, neither do we. Its like Load mixed with St. Anger performed badly.

Rolling Stone, and other mags there push sales like a retrograde review in the LA Times say 'return to form' and all that BS. Like fer sure. Wasn't Jonas Bros the cover last week?

(Rolling Stone should fold up if they're gonna push Radio Disney bands.)

Hammet should quit and play 2nd guitarist for Voivod, the only decent North American band left. (And Dio too!) :)

What or who is (a) Glasvegas?

I'm deducing it's a UK pop band that hasn't made it's presence known on a wide scale in Canada yet.

Interesting band no doubt, great musicians.............but save me the bullshit please. They are not setting the bar. They are the Fugazi of the metal world, but not a memorable song anywhere. People who go on and on about Meshuggah are entitled to their opinion but they are not setting the bar.

This album is the latest victim of the "Loudness Wars", with a slight layer of digital distortion running throughout the album.

Please view this petition aimed at encouraging a re-mix.

Seriously?
Voivod the only "decent" North American metal band left

Once again seriously?

Since you say decent that must mean that you only mean decent as Nevermore is one of the greatest metal bands ever. And they are a North American band.

I saw Meshuggah at Hellfest, they were abysmal. I`ll give you Gojira though, looking forward to seeing them support In Flames even though they aren`t half as good songwriters as the Swedes.

New Metallica album is surprisingly good btw.
