METALLICA: Video Of Berlin Press Conference Available - Sep. 15, 2008
METALLICA singer/guitarist James Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett took part in a 23-minute press conference prior to the band's September 12, 2008 concert at O2 World in Berlin, Germany. Watch the question-and-answer session below.

When asked about what new bands they are particularly into, Hetfield said, "I like MACHINE HEAD a lot. I love it when a band has been together almost as long as us, and their latest album is their best. I love that. I think that's happened with MACHINE HEAD."

Hammett added, "I really LAMB OF GOD; I think they're a great band. As far as bands filling our shoes… you know, bring it on."

METALLICA was the first band ever to play at the brand new O2 World, an events arena built by Anschutz Entertainment Group. 17,000 fans got the chance to see the rock legends perform, which is the maximum capacity of O2 World.

Tickets for this unique event were made available exclusivelythrough METALLICA's web sites Mission: Metallica and Metclub for a sensatinal price of 10 euros which is about $15.

METALLICA took care of all the expenses for the release party and is planning to donate the earnings to the German Heartcenter Berlin to help with the acquisition of a heart-lung machine for small children.

"Death Magnetic is a fantastic effort from Metallica, however many of us are disappointed by the poor audio quality present on the album. Having heard samples from Guitar Hero 3, it is clear that something can be done to redeem this album. The album sounds 100x better on a video game than it does on CD or vinyl!

Please sign this petition so that we can hopefully either get it remastered, or re-mixed, depending on where the problems occurred at some point, or to ensure that the next Metallica album does not suffer from the same issues, or get caught up in the loudness war that is ruining modern music."

Ted Jensen who mastered "Death Magnetic" answered as follows to a guy who asked him about the painful digital distortion heard on the record :

"Thanks for writing.

I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."

Glad the word is spreading around. The bulletin boards (Metallica's OFFICIAL ones) are on FIRE right now with discussion of this. I'd say we hear something within the next two weeks about this.

Btw- there are people claiming the Guitar Hero 3 tracks are untouched, and were mastered and mixed by the software company,- theyre in the process ripping the songs and have said they sound better.

You know, the clipping really isn't THAT bad. It only gets bad when everything is being played to the fullest extent that it can be; loud vocals, fast double bass drum parts, alternate picking rhythms and a lead part. I'm still not a fan of the production (I think it lacks depth) but the clipping isn't the biggest issue.

Didn't notice on my crappy car stereo, but once I listened to it on the good old iPod with headphones- distortion city, but yes, only in certain parts V mentions above.
PS Was playing it fairly low in headphones, certainly didn't have it cranked up- but still sounded as if the speakers couln't handle the volume! Can some people seriously not hear this???

Personally I have no problem with the sound of the new record but I'm aware that alot of people are less than impressed by it. This petition could actually work out as a good selling idea for the label.

If this petition works, a year from now look for a re release of "Death Magnetic" with new production and then...ya gotta buy it again.

It's not that it's "too Loud." It's that it sounds like shit... I LOVE the album but, I hope to God the GH3 versions become available as MP3s. I think it's laughable that a video game company can mix an album better than people who've been making music for 20-30 years...

"Keep wasting your time over it or enjoy the fact that we have a real Metallica album for the 1st time in 12 years."

Glad you're such an easy guy to satisfy but having good songs with poor audio quality doesn't make it for me.

All the more when we eventually get to hear some decent meterial from Metallica.

I think the fans (who've been financially supporting those four guys for years by buying all their stuff) deserve better than that.
