METALLICA Opens At U.S. No. 1 Just Shy Of 500K

Billboard.com reports that METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" has sold close to a half million copies in just a three-day sales window and will lead The Billboard 200 when Nielsen SoundScan releases its charts tomorrow morning (Sept. 17). The band's first studio album since 2003 moved 490,000 copies in its abbreviated frame, scheduled off-cycle on a Friday to accommodate a worldwide release date. METALLICA's last CD, "St. Anger", also had an unusual release date after Elektra Records decided to move up its release to Thursday, June 5, 2003 from Tuesday, June 10, 2003 "to ensure that counterfeit copies of the band's first studio album in six years do not proliferate in the marketplace," the label said at the time. "St. Anger" sold 363,000 copies in its first full week of release to land at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 chart. The album shifted 418,000 copies in the U.S. in its first, shortened week on the streets. METALLICA's "Re-Load" album sold 435,000 units during its first week in 1997, while 1996's "Load" opened at 680,000. 1991's self-titled "black album" debuted with 598,000 and has since gone on to sell more than 15.2 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

I don't care where this album places on the charts, nor whom unseats Metallica @ #1 but I do think that this is an album DESERVING to be the #1 slot anywhere.

That's ok if you think the album sounds fine to your ears.
But the fact that Ted Jensen who mastered says the mixes were compressed way beyond belief is a proof that something is very wrong about the way "Death Magnetic" was completed.

I never spouted one word about what this album would be like on Blabbermouth. I RARELY even log in to post here.
I sat and watched and shook my head at the fucking losers that logged in just to act cool and post negative comments about anything and any one here. This site makes me sad to be your fellow man, and I RARELY scroll past the actual news in a post, because it makes you just a little dumber as a person if you do.
With that said, I knew from day mother fucking one that this album was going to kill. As soon as it was announced that Rick Rubin was going to be directing the ship. And now, suddenly, EVERYONE (9.9 out of 10 anyway) that comments on Metallica posts now have nothing but positive things to say. You're all a bunch of fucking cry baby's. This site has somehow accumulated the biggest group of retard critics in the universe.

Both parties are 800 pound gorillas in the music industry. These guys are smart and in control. You and I may not like their taste, but it's not a Chris Athens record. I'm just happy to see that professionals like Andy Sneap and the mastering engineer himself "Ted Jensen" agree that it sounds like shit. For the sake of the music, please remaster it!
If you want us to admit that you've won the "loudness wars" then fine...YOU WIN!!! Now lets get back to professional sounding music that doesn't make our ears bleed.

that may be true....but it also could be Greg Fidelman (mixer/engineer) who did the final mixing before sending it to Ted Jensen at the master studio.

uhhmmm....the mixing issues have come up. Quite a lot lately. Even the mastering engineer who did the album, Ted Jensen, admits that somewhere along the line someone fucked up big time.
Have you not been reading all the articles and statements that have been made by industry professionals about Death Magnetic???

as I listen to it, I like it, but theres is always a but, listen to the production like bands like All That Remains or Trivium for example( the new albums) they are not my favorite bands, but still I hear really good production, I mean Metallica gotta have a bigger budget to have a much much better production, this guys and other bands like Arch Enemy or Nevermore come up with really great productions, why Metallica dont listen around and check whoever produces these other bands,,but dont get me wrong, the music is good, the production is not !! but I am happy for them that they are selling a lot of CD's !!

I was thinking the same thing. The new All That Remains and Trivium ( not my fave's either) but they have awesome production. Cavalera Conspiracy is killer production. Makes an album that much better.

..it sells squillions. It's a good album and since Metallica, how should I put it....kinda CARE about SALES, it can only push them even further into the right direction.
Also, if it sells a lot it's gonna be good for thrash and rock in general and it looks like it is gonna sell millions, so I'm glad.

I seem to notice the sound becomes progressively worse as the album advances. The second half sounds poorer than the first. Do you notice this? I still crank the shit out of it though.

Guys... the Guitar Hero III version of "Death Magnetic" does not have clipping. It's a slightly different mix, and for some reason the stereo channels are reversed, but it's not "brick walled" like the CD. You can find it on the internet....

i've noticed that "the day that never comes" is the worst sounding song for distortion and loudness on the album. But "Cyanide" in contrast has things more under control (at least more than some of the others).
It almost seems like every song is mixed inconsistently which is strange as well. What the hell was going on here???
I agree that some songs are better and some worse. But all are horrible when all is said and done.

I've been a huge metal fan for years and will continue to be until probably I die....I've also been a huge Metallica fan for quite a few years aswell. We've all seen bands come and go and we've seen some of the big metal bands from the 80s and 90s still rockin the riffs even today....
As we know Metallica during the 80s were the biggest thing in metal followed by Slayer, Iron Maiden....They were the biggest metal acts around at the time and great rivals. Unfortunately that isn't the case these days....for some reason Metallica had this belief that they had to change and get with the times, which is fine to a certain extent. THEY CHANGED COMPLETELY!!! The other big bands from the 80s and even 90s not only changed but they kept to their roots. You would still classify Iron Maiden, Slayer, Pantera as Metal, as far as Metallica are concerned they are a Rock Band these days....
Look I understand that the people age and get older and wiser, priorities changes, for example, families and children....But if you are willing to stay in the music industry and call yourself a metal band, then stick to it, or leave gracefully....Bands like Slayer, Pantera (RIP Dimebag), Iron Maiden, Megadeth stuck to there guns and are even bigger today then they were all those years ago.
All I keep hearing is Metallica this and Metallica that....The sole person behind Metallica's REBIRTH is RICK RUBIN!!!! He had come into this and said, listen guys enough of the bullshit, enough of the therapy, enough of these crapy recordings and music (Post Black Album), I want you guys to go back 20+ years ago, when you were mean, angry, the kings of the world and harness that energy and lets fuckin make a metal album (So to speak)!!!
Hence we got Death Magnetic!!!! Yeah look it ain't Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, Ride the Lightning but its a hell of a lot better then anything they have done since the Black Album. Yeah look the guys can't play as quickly as they used to, James doesn't have that meanstreak/anger in his voice like he used to, however, the album is a Huge improvement then previous attempts....
Where does Metallica go from here? How many years have Metallica got left? Who knows, but lets hope that they continue the path they are currently on....Everyone lived and breathed Metallica in the 80s and early 90s and followed their music like it was a religion, lets hope they stay on this track, for their sake and for the sake of Heavy Metal!!!

This new album is not bad!! Some of the tracks are good and some are not good! However this album is far from being a so called return to the master of puppets days like lars said it was!! Listen up people Metallica will always be great for their enormous contributions to metal however them days are long gone !! I've had the pleasure of being in a studio environment recording my music on three different occasions, and I've always left the mix and mastering (if you'd call it that recording a demo c.d)
up to the producer and all I really cared about was whether or not the guitars were good and gave input on the bass tones, drums, ect but final mixing was not where me or any of the other musicians stuck our noses in because our view was that we paid this guy to make us not sound like shit lol

the mix shouldn't be an issue. Cut the bass down a few notches and put the treble closer to the middle than you normally would and it sounds fine. And when listening to the last three tracks take the bass down just one more notch. Their's no bad production with this record. If you want bad production listen to Hate Eternals new piece of shit.

I think hes sitting in the studio with Andy Sneap laughing their asses off at how shitty Death Magnetic sounds. You know the new Megadeth is going to slay. Broderick is actually better than MArty Friedman, which is pretty tough to be.. And I'm sure since Death Magnetic does kick ass (SONGWISE NOT PRODUCTION/MIXING/MASTERING wise) he will up the ante as well (instead of the midpaced clunkers hes been releasing lately). You WILL see Rust in Peace 2- (not titled that hopefully though)- mark my words.

the mix shouldn't be an issue. Cut the bass down a few notches and put the treble closer to the middle than you normally would and it sounds fine. And when listening to the last three tracks take the bass down just one more notch. Their's no bad production with this record. If you want bad production listen to Hate Eternals new piece of shit.

Wrong, theres fuzz all over the placce. The mix is muddy as shit (i dont doubt the HAte Eternal has a problem as well) - the GH3 actually has parts that are MISSING from the album because the album is sonic mud (you can hear other layers better is what im saying)

I hear a lot of complaints about it, but my stereo is an old pioneer and it makes almost anything sound good. I guess some of the newer digital stereos could fuck it up. I don't doubt you Firewind. I've just had no problems. The new Benediction album sounds like shit too. The drums are the worst I've ever heard.

Wozilla & BigMonkeyDope where are they now.. they gona log tomorow under different screen names and complain more.. by the way wozilla if ac&dc could sell these numbers in three days next week or whenever they new record drps that would be impressive.. but because u running ur mouth all week talking smack, i doubt anybody on this site is gona let u go in peace....and u should do ur homework when comparing sales album between both bands.. I think Metallica got them hands down beat in that category.. but for each is own..
The guitar hero version of the cd sound s very different from the cd that retailers got... by the way... hope yah keep on rocking hard..

The guitar Hero version of the record u could actually hear Robert Playing in it and the distortion its not there which make the conspiracy theorys more greater that maybe someone drp the ball or was order to fk up the mix...

To sell this amount of copies in 2008 in JUST three days is nothing short of AMAZING. The fact that it has sold more copies than its predecessors says that people who despised them in the 90´s and 2003 (among them me) are trusting in them again, but JUST for the fact that it is a VERY GOOD album in itself.

This will do us no good. I, like many fans of the new songs, am not a fan of the sound quality of the new album. But guess what? They are not going to fix it! First that would involve admitting they did something WRONG and that isn't going to happen because Metallica and Rubin's team of engineers are experts and there is no way this shit happened by accident.
Also, there's too much money at stake. The new album is selling like crack on the streets of Detroit. It doesn't make sense financially for them to remix (and then have to remaster) the album because it's obviously selling well and will probably continue to sell well for a while and be very profitable.
I'm as upset as some of you guys regarding the clipping and distortion. It makes some parts of some tracks very difficult to listen to (I.E.: Lars' snare rolls are especially horrid). But we may as well accept the album for what it is and try to just enjoy the music, because unless Hell freezes over, we are not going to see this issue corrected - much less even addressed - by the band or engineers involved in the recording/mixing.
At this point, I'm pretty confident that it's a "take it or leave it" situation. I'll take it along with a couple aspirin.

been there since trading tapes of their demo with Ron McGovney on bass, so feel like i can say it: METALLICA FUCKING REALLY REALLY SUCKS. this CD blows only slightly less than St Suck. Doesn't sound anything like early thrash. you must be deaf and in denial. i agree metal needs something good and fresh, but this ain't it. these blue jeans n tshirts, won't ever make a video, never sell out, makeup wearing, coke addicted alcoholic, pretentious surfing painting connossieurs, napster whining, rockstar fucking POSERS are the worst demise in history. what a laugh. what kind of fucking people actually bought this shit??? they make JUDAS PRIEST sound like the real metal kings they are. a shitty song played fast is indeed "fast shit". too bad they aren't SLAYER or even MEGADETH. United Abominations is real metal. this is trendy shit.....
