METALLICA Performs 'The Day That Never Comes' On British Television; Video Available - Sep. 16, 2008
METALLICA performed its new single, "The Day That Never Comes", earlier tonight (Tuesday, September 16) on the BBC television show "Later… with Jools Holland". Watch the performance below.

According to Billboard.com, METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" has sold close to a half million copies in just a three-day sales window and will lead The Billboard 200 when Nielsen SoundScan releases its charts tomorrow morning (Sept. 17). The CD moved 490,000 copies in its abbreviated frame, scheduled off-cycle on a Friday to accommodate a worldwide release date.

The new 10-song collection is the band's first since 2003, when it issued the controversial "St. Anger". Many fans were turned off by that record's primitive production and lack of guitar solos, but drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that doing "St. Anger" paved the way to return to a more traditional sound on "Death Magnetic". "I'm pretty sure that a big part of the reason the new record sounds and feels like it does is because we had to go and do that in order to get to where we are now. You know what I mean?" he said. "We had to get that out of our systems. It was just, it was vital, it was unavoidable. We had to just fuck it up to that point."

"Death Magnetic" was produced by the band and Rick Rubin, known for his work with the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, JOHNNY CASH and many others.

The album marks the recording debut of bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined METALLICA in 2003 shortly after "St. Anger" was completed.

METALLICA will kick off its indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.

And yet you cannot hear it on the album.

It is a great improvement and they will never be able to recreate those first four records, but this is probably the closest we will get. Thank god the drums sound like drums. Turn that bass up!

Today was the first time in 15 years I bought a Metallica album. Death Magnetic is a solid album all the way through. I hope this is a start of good things to come. Now if they could only remaster the ...And Justice For All album.

Top 5 albums of 2008 (IMO) so far.

Death Angel - Killing Season
King's X - XV
Metallica - Death Magnetic
Motorhead - Motorizer
Judas Priest - Nostradamus

Since this whole production disaster is on such a large scale and major engineers are voicing their opinion as well, at least we can hope that something good comes out of Death Magnetic's production. The "loudness wars" are now in the spotlight and people aren't happy with the extreme level that it's gone to.

I think after this there will be a change in quality of production/mixing/engineering. Honestly. Do think Ruban/Fidelman/Jensen (the production/mixing/engineering team) will ever be involved again with anything that they can't control properly???

Even Andy Sneaps is commenting on the quality being crap. He made a funny comment about someone sending Metallica some reverb for this album.

so it's out there....the pro's are agreeing with us. This mistake won't happen again at least.

I did not notice the sound on my shitty truck stereo, but all day at work on my Ipod I kept trying to set it so that it, but my choices were destroy my ears or not even really hear anything. Sucks, because like lots of you out there. I do like this album, I think it is really the best effort that they have really put uot since Justice. Too bad it is ruined by the shitty sound that I seem to be a day two behind realizing what everyone else already knew.

I bought the album the day before yesterday, and I had NO IDEA about what was going on with the sound quality.
At first I was overwhelmed with how good the first song was, I really felt that this album could be something. But then I heard some "scrappy" sound in my loudspeakers and I started to take note of it every time when there was a part with loud guitars or drums. At song 3 it became extremely obvious and annoying.

I put on my headphones, most to see if it would be my loudspeakers or something in the room that created the noise. I have a new pair of headphones with really good sound, and have had no sound issues with any of my CDs so far, including metallicas older and newer albums (st anger may be excluded).

But the scratchy scrapping sound was still there in my headphones. I put on another CD. No problems. Back to death magnetic. Weird sounds. This was so obvious to me and I could not do anything but getting annoyed about these sounds! I could not focus on the music even though I felt that this could have been the Metallica album I had been waiting for since many years back.

So I thought, if there actually is crappy sound on the album, someone else should have noticed it. So I googled around and I found this place. To me the sound issues were totally obvious, I heard them before anyone hade told me about them. I was completerly unaffected by other´s opinions, I have even been avoiding reading any reviews of the album so I could make my own opinion. And what happens? I have been waiting for a new great album with metallica. St Anger didn't do it. And now something new comes up. I get a record in my hands, that seems to be an awesome record, but with annoying sound issues. Don't you understand how extremely frustrating that is?

All you guys saying "nah, who cares about the sound, listen to the MUSIC", or "There's nothing wrong with the album", or "if you don't like it, listen to something else"... dont you understand that we want to listen to THIS album BECAUSE the music is so great? But we can't focus on the music...
Either this is a very individual problem, if you hear the clipping or not, or there is a "fixed" batch of records out there that you guys have who don't have problems. Either way, why can't you let us who have a problem with the sound make the demand to get a new remastered record? Or at least an official statement? What does it hurt you who are already satisfied with the record?

The guitar hero tracks are really much better. They are definetely OK. If the CD sounded like that I would not complain, it is not a masterpiece when it comes to quality, but it is good enough to let you sit down and enjoy the actual music. I want a CD that can give me that. I don't want a CD that has come from a really great effort from the guys in Metallica, just to be destroyed by someone else just before the release. I don't think it is fair neither for us nor for the band.
I want a new record or at least an apology from the people responsible. And no, metallica didnt want it to sound this way. Im sure of it.

Imagine how much tighter the MetallicA would be if they had a better drummer, instead of Rob,James and Kirk having to always listening out for if Lars will keep up with the rhythm or speed it up or slow it down, and not to mention the potential in song writing with a more skilled drummer than Lars.

With regards to the sound quality, well, everything sounds

Audiophile fans of Metallica shouldn't bother buying copies of their new album, Death Magnetic. According to one analyst, the record sounds better in the Guitar Hero video game.

"On purchasing our CD ... we gave the disc a spin and couldn't help wondering if our office headphones were faulty as the kick and snare drum seemed to be audibly clipping, along with some of the palm-muted guitar parts," wrote Chris Vinnecombe, guitar editor of music-making website MusicRadar.

The sound issues are a result of the "loudness war" - an ongoing industry effort to make recordings as loud as possible, so that on cursory listens tracks leap forcefully from the speakers. While any album can just have its volume turned up on your stereo, records like Death Magnetic have their audio compressed, making them inherently louder at the expense of dynamic range and sound quality.
