METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT On When He Realized He Was A 'Rock Star' - Sep. 17, 2008
RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

RollingStone.com: Was there a point when you realized you were a rock star?

Kirk: It was probably the "Black Album" tour, when thing started to get really crazy. We would go to social events, and Ozzy would come up to us — "Hello!" Or we'd get a message — "Tony Iommi is here. He wants to say hello." If our heroes, the people we were so inspired by, are interested in us now, we might have crossed a line somewhere. We had reached a level, in musicianship, in respectability. It was a powerful feeling.

RollingStone.com: Did it also make you realize that your friend was right — rock stars are normal too?

Kirk: There came a time when you started feeling comfortable with them, and realizing, yeah, they have the same mechanics as every other human being in the world. Just because they played that fantastic guitar solo in 1978 does not make them non-human. I hope that carries on to people when they meet me. I'm always uncomfortable when people start bowing. I'm waiting to shake their hand, and they do that. Just shake my hand! [Laughs]

RollingStone.com: How much do you think you need to be in METALLICA — that there is nothing else you can or want to do? During the making of "St. Anger", when it was clear the engine was not turning over, were you able to accept the fact that nothing lasts forever?

Kirk: Honestly, I was ready to start working on a solo album. I had a bunch of music I was sitting on. I was going to ask Lars to play drums on it. But to get to the real meat of the question . . .

RollingStone.com: The need to be in this band.

Kirk: It's really important. I've been in the band longer than I haven't been. I joined the band when I was 20 years old. I've been in the band now 25 years.

inasmuchas Kirk talked about being in Metallica for 20 years, I was thinking what else could he do? What about this scenario: Kirk goes back to Exodus, Mustaine re-joins Metallica, Bruce goes flying planes only (Paul Samson RIP) Dianno goes back to fronting Maiden, Martin Birch comes out of retirement to produce Maiden and Metallica, Bonnet rejoins Blackmore (no make that Dio joins Blackmore), Bonnet plays with Malmsteen (no, make that Bonnet plays with Schenker), Boals leaves Royal Hunt to make room for DC Cooper to come back (that actually would be the LEAST LIKELY thing to happen). Let's see that would mean then that Boals could then play with Malmsteen, Ripper Owens would go back to Iced Earth (I think he is), because after all, Halford is back with Priest, No wait, Ripper is with Malmsteen, but if he goes back to Iced Earth, then Malmsteen would have room for Boals.

Ok, John Arch goes back to Fates Warning, Ray Adler joins Redemptiom (WAIT! He already has)
Oops! Blackmore starts up Deep Purple with A. Gillan or B. Coverdale. But before I get to that, let me say that Steve Morse would have to go back to the Dixie Dregs, And I realize that Sykes would rejoin Tygers of Pan Tang (with Jon Deveril of course. OF COURSE!). Then Viv would leave Def Leppard to go back to Sweet Savage.

No that can't work! I've got Blackmore together with Dio AND Gillan (or Coverdale). On second thought, Blackmore is no slouch - he could have Rainbow w/Dio at the same time he could be doing DP with Gillan (or Coverdale)

NO NO NO!

I'VE GOT IT! Blackmore could do triple duty with Dio, plus doing DP with Gilan AND Coverdale (and I don't mean double penetration!)

And if you see any mistakes in what I just typed, tough luck. I ain't proofreading after typing all that. I'll continue this in a minute, I've got to get me another MONSTER in the green can!
