ROBERT PLANT Says LED ZEPPELIN Has Never Been About The Fans

According to ContactMusic.com, Robert Plant has not ruled out another reunion with his band LED ZEPPELIN — insisting it's the bureaucracy involved that puts him off the idea. The band has been dogged by rumors of a world tour since they reformed for a one-off gig in London last year — its first concert in 19 years. But Plant, who is currently touring with bluegrass star Alison Krauss, has so far refused to agree to hit the road with the legendary group again. He tells Britain's GQ magazine: "The endless paperwork was like nothing I've experienced before. I've kept every one of the e-mails that were exchanged before the concert and I'm thinking of compiling them for a book, which I feel sure would be hailed as a sort of literary version of SPINAL TAP (semi-fictional heavy metal band featured in spoof documentary 'This Is Spinal Tap'). LED ZEPPELIN's never been about the fans. We've always been about four guys coming together to make thrilling, disturbing rock 'n' roll. On our own terms."

but to say that a rock band isn't about the fans is STUPID...if you have no fans it can't work...period. So a message to this washed up geezer: if it wasn't for the fans you'd probably still work in a sliced meat factory near your shithole shack you used to live in before THE FANS bought your crap music.

God the people on here are stupid sometimes. He is trying to say they have never cared what the fans think of them or their music and that the music they have created was for themselves. This should be the case with any band, who wants a band sitting around going "do you think our fans will like this?". Fuck that! Music is art and expression and should never be based on what a preconceived opinion of it should be. If they had not thought that way we might never have had many of their great songs. Because they didn't care if you were going to like it or hate they dug it so they recorded it. I am sure he is happy with the success they have had and appreciates the fans for that but they don't owe their fans anything. They put out amazing music. If they had not then they would not have had fans so end of story.

Does not mean that you're a good band and does not mean that you are sincere. Don't be stupid. Artists should not do it for the fans or the fame or the money. That will all come if they make good music FIRST.

about it not being about the fans is, they didn't do this for stardom and to draw a specific crowd. They always did things their way from day one. They have always controlled the entire thing.
It's not as if Plant doesn't appreciate the fans, he does. Watch the Led Zep DVD at the end of the Knebworth Festival where he says: "I don't know how to say it, thanks for 11 years." The fans became important but they didn't do it to have fans.

u can make music without fans...fans make u money, but they have nothing to do with the satisfaction that comes a long with making great music. They could've been making music allll along and have like 15 albums piled up, doubt it....but they already have more money then they'll ever need

Though it is good every band should make music on their own terms and bring to the table their own style and uniqueness. Many bands fall in the trap of wanting to play simply what the majority of people want to hear. Though it is almost paradoxical that the band's success and the influence and money generated by the fans is nessecary to the continuance of making that said music. Led Zeppelin is at the point where if they never made another album they would still remain legendary and known for decades to come. At the same time because of this the people that never got to see Led Zeppelin live, never got to experience Led Zeppelin in person feel left out in that though they listen to this music religiously they can never see or experience the band as those before them did. Then the media begins heavy speculation on a possible touring and chance to hear this band and people jump. No matter how many people deny it, so many would probably be willing to cut off a pinky finger for a full night of Led Zeppelin. A band should not be forced musically in what directions its fans want and should make it's own sound and it's own style hoping that people will like it. But we don't want a new Zep album, we just want to see you play, to hell if Plant's old and his voice restricted, just to experience Zeppelin is good by itself. If Zep and some nice classic acts came together for a three night festivel anywhere in America all the paperwork of the world would be woth it. It would be like Woodstock times ten, a concert that couldn't be topped in a hundred years. Led Zeppelin owes us nothing, but, come on they could give something back to the fans besides music the fans have to trade for, a 3 day festivel with Led Zeppelin and other acts would be not only something to trully mark them on music and US history, but an experience worthy of a glorious ending to Led Zeppelin rather than a tragic one.

Making music for yourself and not trying to latch onto a fan base. What I don't understand is why would someone take the time to write something with the possibilty it might never be heard. I think everyone who writes music wants to be heard by as many people as possible, so you have to make it somewhat appealing in a broad sense. Otherwise why do it?
On that note, I think all he meant was, if fans are pissed there is no tour, then too bad. I think they've earned the right to do as they please.

Don't give a damn about the comment. Zep is one of the most important bands in rock and metal history. Unparralelled by anyone except Sabbath. Music would blow if these guys hadn't gotten together.

He OBVIOUSLY means that it's not about what the fans want...OF COURSE we all want Zeppelin to tour, even those of us who have seen them. But he doesn't care about the money, he's got more than he'll ever spend, it's about the personal satisfaction. Zep has given us more than any band save for the Beatles, they owe the fans NOTHING. That being said, I wish the red tape could be eliminated and have them tour. Nothing would be better than to take my 11 year old to see them, it would be an experience like to no other. Fingers crossed that it happens but I would NEVER hold it against them if they don't.

Zeppelin just like many other great bands did make music for music sakes for the art of making music and if someone liked it then great. they didnt make it just for the money and didnt care what people thought, thats why these old bands were and are so great!
and he never said he didnt like his fans, of course Plant likes his fans but if they would have made music just for that then they would have sucked just like most rock bands do today.

i'm sorry, man. to me ozzy will forever be black sabbath. That's his legacy. I know that in the states his solo career(which is a great solo career, don't get me wrong) almost obscured his former band, but to me sabbath will always be his finest contribution to music.
So here's my point of view:
Ozzy respect his fans so much that he refused to do another album with black sabbath, when that was obviously what tony and geezer wanted. He respect so much his fans that he never toured europe with them since the ice age, when here the people would pay him whatever he wants to see them. For what people have told me, every ozzfest he did with sabbath, he played the same bill, the same ten songs. So i find him disappointing, i have to say.
that said, i think robert plant is really acting like an ass.
And the passing of richard wright is the proof that you have to take chances when you got them. If gilmour wasn't such a rancorous dick, we would have seen a pink floyd tour. now it's late.
those guys should stop acting like brats, we're asking them to play their fucking songs for us, not to give us their bone marrow!

Really? Who did you sell albums to? Why just not gig live in the local area and make a few demos for friends...and get real jobs?
Nope. Cause you sign a contract and then you're on the record company's terms.
Is all of this stalling just so it doesn't look so obvious when they DO tour? I'm SURE that DVD of the live show will be released, either way.

He just means that they make music FIRST to please themselves, and ONCE they get fans that like it that´s fine, I think that´s been his philosophy and that´s what it should be. I don´t think he´s disregarding them. If they follow his music, that´s fine, that simple, and if they make them filthy rich like them, they can´t ask for more to life.

Plant has no problem with the stuff from Physical Graffiti and Presence...was bummed they didnt play In the evening..this is the stuff he could handle..everything else he would have to be careful with...
