MICHAEL ANTHONY Issues 'CHICKENFOOT' Update
- Sep. 22, 2008
|
|
|
The new "supergroup" featuring former VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar, ex-VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony, guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith recently entered the studio to begin recording its debut album. Anthony writes on his web site, "First of all you can all rest assured that our name will not be CHICKENFOOT, but I guess we have to call it something for now!! I just got back last Wednesday from a week and a half of recording with Sam, Joe, and Chad, and all I can say is.... F___K, the shit is ROCKIN'!!!! [Producer] Andy Johns is in the studio with us, and it's sounding BIG!!! I know Sammy got bashed a bit for supposedly comparing this to ZEP in the press (I'm sure if he made any references, it's just because of how excited we all are about how it is coming along. You all know Sammy!! This definitely has the energy of an early ZEP or VH for that matter...). NOBODY will be dissappointed!! We have nine basic tracks recorded, and after Sammy and Joe finish up some touring commitments, we will be back in the studio to finish this up!! We can't wait to get this thing out, so we can bash it up HARD with all of you!!!!"
Smith told The Pulse of Radio he got involved in the project by owning a home near Hagar's place in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. "If you're in Cabo, of course you know Sammy 'cause he's, you know, he rules the joint," he said. "And he's a really nice man, he's a great guy, actually. Somehow he's taken a liking to me, and we played in Vegas, and we played some cover songs — we're a good cover band now. He got pretty excited about it and it actually sounded really good."

Fucking badass!!! Maybe this will turn into something permanent, as Sammy and Mike need to get back on top, the world needs to know who Satch is, and Stadium Arcadium is really a perfect note to call it a career on.

Totally agree with you, man.
I cannot wait for this disc. Worst case scenario: it will be cool. Best case scenario: it will be awesome. It's a win-win situation, yo.

I love this line up! The only thing I really hope for here is for Satch to change his tone for this project. All of the effects totally work for his solo stuff. I think with this project it should be GUITAR -> TUBE SCREAMER -> AMP. That would be killer!

...then it can't be that good.
'Rivaling Zeppelin', Sam? I'm so glad you said that, because before, only Classic Van Halen fans knew how full of $#!T you were - now everyone knows.
Chickenshit may be a great band, if they lose the Red-Schmucker.

Are you fucking stoned????? You don't survive 5, yes count 'em, 5 decades in the music business if you suck. Plenty of shit gets 1 or 2 records, but Sammy may end up in the hall one day on his own. He's sold out halls and arenas in the 60's and early 70's with Montrose, 70's and early 80's solo, 80's, 90's and 00's with VH AND himself. Plus he proved he can hang on the country shed circuit with Kenny Chesney (who in my eye's the air apparent to Buffett). Now he's about to climb right back on top with what sounds like THE supergroup. oh, and he also created and sold his own tequilla company for 80 million??? There are better vocalists and songwriters out there true, but Sammy Hagar has THE LIFE. Plus he is an awesome dude. Everyone loves the guy, except for Eddie, but he's a jerkoff anyway.

Let's see...Sammy singing. A great guitarist. A bassist known for vocal harmonies (and drinking Iced Tea from a Jack Daniels bottle), but not renowned for playing the bass. A so-so drummer.
This is post-Roth Van Halen! Only difference is a sober guitarist and somewhat less of a drummer.
Sammy has started and killed "supergroups" before. HAAS!

Sounds interesting, and I'm glad it's not going to be called chickenfoot either...that would have been pretty uneventful. Maybe this will force Van Halen to get into the studio soon...time will tell.

Another Roth fan who's still pissed that VH stayed on top after Roth left, proving your idol wasn't quite the god you thought him to be. It's been 23 years. Get over it.
I have nothing against Roth - but since VH promptly vanished without a word after the tour, it looks like he'll need to move on from Edward Van Douchebag if he wants to stay relevant. "Al and I just cashed our tour checks so we're done. Sorry, Dave. Tell the fans we're sorry too. And can you get me a Vinegar and Water please? I'm thirsty."
I for one am psyched about the new Chickenfoot album. Sammy deserves some ridicule for comparing it to Zeppelin for sure, but if this music really is as good as it could be with this lineup, it's easy to see why the excitement could overcome his judgment in saying something as crazy as that. But the man is happy and you gotta give him that. Can't wait to hear it.

Sammy Hagar says it's as good as Zeppelin, is it really? Probably not, but I've been dying to hear it ever since I read that quote! I bet it's good. I love Chad Smith's drumming... funky as f*ck! I agree it will be interesting to hear satch in a structured, song oriented environment. I just hope Sammy doesn't write every lyric about booze and tits. Dig a little deeper brother.
