STEVE VAI Auctioning One-Hour Private Guitar Lesson For Charity - Sep. 29, 2008
Steve Vai is offering a one-hour private guitar lesson for auction on eBay to benefit Allen Shellenberger, the drummer for rock band LIT.

According to a press release, one lucky winner will receive a one-hour private guitar lesson with Steve Vai at a date, time, and location to be determined in Los Angeles, California. The winner will be responsible for his/her own travel and accommodation costs. Winner will also receive a photo with Steve. If under 18, the winner must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. (Note: high bidder will be subject to standard security procedures prior to being accepted as official winner.)

Allen Shellenberger, the drummer for Orange County rock back LIT, has been diagnosed with a grade 4 malignant brain tumor. Biopsy results have identified Allen's tumor as diffused glioblastoma multiforme, the most aggressive of primary brain tumors. It is the same type of cancer Senator Edward M. Kennedy is battling. Allen is 38 years old and LIT has been a band and a brotherhood for over 20 years. Despite the news, Allen and the band are committed to the fight.

To help offset Allen's medical costs, the Make A Noise Foundation is sponsoring this auction through eBay's Giving Works program. All proceeds will benefit Allen Shellenberger and Cedars-Sinai's Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute in Los Angeles.

VAI is an all around awesome guitarist and musician...

He's A LOT deeper than his image and stage persona suggests...and he's more than Van Halen-esque licks and tricks.

He's deep on theory and can read and write anything...a lesson with him would be highly informative!!

Were the reasons I started to play guitar, to of the most emotive guitar players ever. Straight from the soul and onto the fretboard.

you have to be outstanding to play with Zappa. being in his band says a lot about a musician.

i don't think Vai is overrated, i think he gets the credit he deserves. Passion and Warfare is such a good album mixed with feeling and proficiency.

This is a hot opportunity. I wish they had this back while I was still playing. To sit in the same room with Steve Vai would be priceless. Shit, I may bid just to watch him noodle about..

The bid is like 1200 now.. I'd pay that to meditate with him for half an hour and watch him practice for the other half hour. Well worth it.

People let's be sensible, bashing Vai? Really? I mean you all have opinions and you're entitled but the man is an out of this world musician and songwriter. Yes that's right, SONGWRITER!!!

I don't have the cash to burn on the lesson but I tell you what I certainly wish I did. I can't imagine what it'd be like to trade just a few bars with the guy. To me he's pure inspiration and always will be.

Steve Vai is a very good guitarist.

Overrated though? Probably.

Zakk Wylde was one of those guiatr hero types once upon a time. Then he grew some balls and started playing songs, as opposed to showcasing himself on stage every other night as some tired 80's guitar virtuoso who could rip through his scales at 1000mph.

Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, Petrucci etc etc etc. Very good guitar technicians. No doubt. Good song writers though? Not really. they haven't stood the test of time regards albums sales or band popularity.

A niche market for fretboard masturbaters worldwide.

Darryl 'dimebag' Abbott was every bit as good as those guys (Go ask Eddie Van Halen) the difference being, he could write killer rock/metal songs and have one of the biggest bands on the planet in Pantera.

If Vai etc go away and come back with a multi-platinum selling band with musical credibility i'll have more respect for them rather than viewing them as merely guitar elitists.
