Teacher Allegedly Forces Student To Remove Inflammatory MACHINE HEAD T-Shirt - Oct. 7, 2008
A New Orleans, Louisiana high school teacher allegedly forced a student to remove her MACHINE HEAD t-shirt during class because the teacher objected to the anti-war message that was printed on the shirt's back.

The fan, who posts on MACHINE HEAD's official message board, "The Frontlines," under the name "Robyn", wrote in an October 3, 2008 posting, "A couple weeks ago I bought the 'War' t-shirt from the MACHINE HEAD store and I got it in the mail yesterday and I wore it to school today. The shirt that says 'War, Lies, Fear, Change' on the back. [see image below] Well, when I got to school today, my English teacher told me I couldn't wear it and I had to call home to get a different shirt. Well, I had no idea, but [the teacher's] son is in Iraq right now. I mean, I know [the message printed on the back of the shirt] has a lot to do with politics and everything, but it's not like I was talking about it or anything. Because they tell us at school that we're not supposed to talk about religion or politics. But half the kids in that school don't really give a shit or they're just to dumb to know anything. Did they have any right in telling me to take it off?"

The "War! Lies! Fear! Change!" slogan is based on the lyrics to the MACHINE HEAD song "Clenching the Fists of Dissent", which opens the band's latest album, "The Blackening".

The U.S. version of the special edition of "The Blackening" is scheduled for release on October 28 via Roadrunner Records. "The Blackening Special Edition" is two-disc CD/DVD set that will feature an assortment of extras, including rare bonus tracks such as covers of IRON MAIDEN's "Hallowed Be Thy Name", over an hour of live performance footage from With Full Force, Download and Rock in Rio festivals, three uncensored music videos for "Aesthetics of Hate", "Now I Lay Thee Down" and "Halo", a "making-of" featurette on each video, "The Making of The Blackening" and expanded artwork. There's also what many hardcore fans have been rabidly waiting for: four never-before-seen performances of MACHINE HEAD celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, "Burn My Eyes", captured in Philadelphia in 2004.

I think you're missing the point. It wasn't just a "metal" shirt. It was a political statement that was suppressed.

LA gov. Bobby Jindahl also want 'creationism' taught in school.

I'd be willing to bet there's an "In God We Trust" poster on the wall in that classroom as well.

Therefore religion is both political and on the table!

Robyn, if you read this site, please take heart and fight back. There was nothing with your shirt. It is not obscene, so I think you have every right to wear it! Check your school's rules, in detail.

The last thing I want to do when I'm trying to learn is see a bunch of my fellow classmates come into the classroom wearing their emo shirts. It's gonna start a brawl.

p.s. you have no constitutional right to wear your metal shirts in school. Get over it, kiddos.

First off..It was a GIRL that wore the shirt. If you missed that point, you're a dumb fuck and you need to learn how to read/comprehend complete detail. Secondly...Teachers have been removing shirts for years. My brother in the late 70's for a Black Sabbath shirt and me in the 90's for a Pantera shirt. It's usually covered in the school handbook that the teacher has the right to have a student change clothing if deemed unacceptable to the learning environment. In this case, it was b/c of personal reasons more than a disruption. The teacher should be reprimanded in this case. Fin.

Back when I was in high school some 11+ years ago, I had a Metallica shirt that said, "Birth - School - Metallica - Death" on it. Basically showing a cycle of life, right?

Well one of the deans didn't think it was appropriate because some kid had a death in the family and he told me to remove it and wear my gym shirt. The next day he tried to get me for wearing a Slayer shirt.

After my parents brought the discrimination to the principal, the dean in question backed off. (I was one of two long haired kids in the school - the rest of the school was preppy - it was also 80% black, 13% white, 2% other - the dean in question was known for not liking white kids.)

Schools suck because they do try to censor everything. I can see having issues with the word "fuck" on a shirt in school, but "ass"? It's another word for something we all have. (Come to think of it, I was told not to wear my "Metal up your ass" shirt too hah!)

Seriously though, why do most schools try to keep kids from expressing themselves? Is it really offensive to wear a shirt with a political statement on it? Aren't schools teaching kids about politics, the different branches of government, and the ideals behind the different political parties in the US anymore? Shouldn't they be encouraging kids to understand how our government works? Instead of telling a kid to take their political based shirt off, why don't you question them on their views and why they have them? Make kids THINK instead of sitting in school and being bored to death.

I could go on... I'm finding myself very politically charged these days... I'll end the rant here.

Check the school's policy. If it states something about no drug, violence, religious, political, hurtful images, language, etc. on a shirt, then the teacher needs to enforce the policy, which she did. There needs to be a clear policy to enforce such a rule. It looks like a lot of people in this thread need to go BACK to school as you don't get it. You have no RIGHT to wear anything you want in a school setting. Don't like it? Run for your school board and change it.

And Beer Wolf, do you seriously consider that the war is for freedom of speech? This ain't WWII. It's not like the Republican Guard were gonna parachute in and machine gun schools like in Red Dawn or something! Get a grip!

I can see how that t-shirt might be offensive to someone with a relative serving, however aren't teachers supposed to be somewhat intellectual and required to have a thicker skin?

Nevertheless it's a typically gaudy and unattractive metal tshirt and probably inappropriate for a classroom. There could also be an arguement that a bullet-ridden flag is inciting hatred and could have violent consequences.

The words on the back could be interpreted many different ways. Not really any problems with the shirt but it hit home for this paricular teacher because his/her son is at war right now. Like posedestroyer said "against the war and not the warrior"... that includes the warrior's family. Show some respect. Remove the shirt. That soldier (with the help & sacrifice of their family) is helping to keep America free and secure your right to wear that shirt and to express yourself and your opinion on the MH message board and anywhere else. Robyn apparently doesn't have that right. Nor, it seems, does she have the right to express herself at school. That's how 'free' America is. As for keeping America secure, waging illegal wars on smaller countries is only furthering the image that the world has of the US being the playground bully, and thus the country is in even more danger from terrorists who want to destroy it.

The Iraq war isn't being fought for America's supposed freedom or security, it's being fought for oil. It's that simple.

What surprises me is that she claims students are told specifically NOT to discuss religion or politics... WHAT THE HELL? If there's any place for a discussion on the subjects, it's in a school. I remember in my school we had entire classes dedicated to current events, and those sorts of debates... In fact now that I think of it, my sister watches recordings of the current presidential debates in her classes.

I agree with hybrid-go, Ballzworth, reallyoldman, mcman71 and the rest of you that believe Robyn has everyright to wear that machine head shirt. The shirt is hardly offensive in anyway (excluding the aforementioned flag issue) anyone offended by that shirt because of it's anti-war statements is just being over sensitive and should just get over themselves. The teacher really had no rational reason to be offended by the shirt just because his son or nephew or whatever was fighting in the war. It's not like the shirt says "Your sons and daughters deserve to die for fighting a pointless war" it's "War! Lies! Fear! Change!" and being an english teacher, that dunce should understand the idea of subtle, passive, defiance of a world gone mad expressed by those words rather then seeing them as an attack on the teachers son or any other soilder for that matter. Neither Robyn nor Machine Head support, encourage, or enjoy what happens everyday in Iraq so nothing about that shirt or the act of wearing it was intended to be offensive and should be viewed objectively as a creative expression by an artist in the industry of music.

And yes there is on going debate about whether school clothing being controlled is a breach of first amendment rights but as it stands by supreme court decision students waive certain rights when they entire school grounds in exchange for a safe controlled learning environment. I don't support the specific decision and I would willingly back anyone who is willing to do what it takes to have it over turned.

Also not all metal chicks are dirty. Slutty chicks are dirty but you don't have to be slutty to be metal. Ergo there are numerous clean metal chicks who would appreciate the wearer of said machine head shirt. "Metal chicks" is far to large a group to generalize in such a manner. "Slutty metal chicks" however is just specific enough to properly address the group I think Ballzworth was referring to.

And finally anyone who thinks Machine Head is emo needs to get their ears checked and take an I.Q. test because I've listened a good portion of Burn My Eyes, The Blackening, and Through the Ashes of Empires and I have yet to hear anything that could even be remotely linked to any emo band. Machine Head doesn't bitch about not being accepted or missing their respective girlfriends or how mommy and daddy didn't love them and they sure as hell don't cry themselves to sleep at night because they feel no one loves them. So get a hearing test and look up the ACTUAL definition of the term EMO and then make your comparison properly instead of generalizing every kid with black haired kid wearing nothing but dark colored clothes and black band T Shirt that he or she may or may not have bought from Hot Topic (Or Spencer's Gifts)'s clearance section. And quite honestly I think the only thing that would make Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel cry would be a) Watching a baby being run over [cause that's just inhuman] b) having a loved one die c) Watching the tragedies of Iraq continue exponentally or d) watching as the American Government continues down this road to ruin

That is all

'Left Unfinished' is PRECISELY about Robb's birth parents not loving him!

about the United States that is so rad. Some it though feels like your watching a science fiction movie. It's like no, there can't possibly be people this nieve or ignorant. Yet everyday you meet people with their heads in the sand. I know it happens everywhere, and maybe its just more publicized there, but it feels the problem is just running rampant. That teacher should have been suspended for that crap. If I was this kids parents I would be raising hell at the school too.

Prohibiting someone from wearing a band's T-shirt that may come off as offensive in its nature isn't anything new.

And neither is suggesting that all schools should adopt a uniform dress code in order to avoid the issue of censorship altogether.
