Detroit Red Wings Defenseman: JOE ELLIOTT Placed STANLEY CUP Upside Down 'On Purpose'

Veteran defenseman Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings ice hockey team — and the current Stanley Cup champion — has told Jim Johnson (a.k.a. J.J.) and Lynne Woodison of the Detroit rock station 94.7 WCSX that DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott placed the Stanley Cup upside down (see video below) "on purpose" during the band's performance last Thursday night (October 9) at Detroit's Fox Theatre prior to the NHL's North American opener between the Red Wings and the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs. An excerpt from Chelios' interview, which aired Wednesday morning (October 15), follows below. Chelios: "Someone should have drove that guy, he did that on purpose." Lynne: " Joe Elliott did it on purpose?" J.J.: "You think he did it on purpose?" Chelios: "No, we know he did... we talked to people at the show and the guy was being real rude to everybody. He was in a bad mood when they got there, so for whatever reason he didn't want to be there. And that's his way of showing it and taking it out on the NHL.... Darren McCarty didn't really get a chance to see it; I guess he was going off the stage when it happened. And you know, Quincey ( Kyle Quincey) was the only one that said he would have done something to him." Lynne: "Do you think Quincey would have really popped him?" Chelios: "No I don’t know if he would have popped him, but he could have gave him a good shove." Joe Elliott issued a statement earlier in the week defending himself against criticism that he should have known better than to place the Stanley Cup upside down. He said, "I will, as always, take full responsibility for what happened because I have big pucks. However, someone at the NHL should have known better and informed me first instead of keeping the Stanley Cup under lock and key until the last minute. The practice run the day before with a coffeemaker went swimmingly because it, like every other sporting cup I've ever seen, was wider at the top than the base. Ironic, isn't it, that after that night's gig, a NHL insider told me that long ago the Stanley Cup was also designed to be put down that way? Like most of my fellow Brits, I'd never seen it before until it was handed to me sideways by which time I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right. Whoops..." You know its one thing to insult every one of your peers, but to pull that kind of shit? This is beyond insulting. All the hard work that the Detroit Red Wings put into winning that cup, as well as every other team in NHL history that won it. Besides, I have to call bullshit on Joe Elliot not knowing. All the hockey arenas he's played in over the years? I wish Chelios had been on stage when that happened. Fuck def Leppard.

Lord Stanley (the guy the cup was named after) lived in Canada and fell in love with the great Canadian game. So he bought the cup (In England) to give to Canadas amateur champion. Disrespectful arrogant ass! People put their blood and sweat for that cup to represent their team at seasons end. He probably couldn't handle working that hard for anything. His band only exists because he was at the right place at the right time. And that time ended and will only be popular with the ice cream truck crowd and whens the last time you seen one of those.

Speaking as a Brit then I can assure any Americans that this will not have been deliberate. Listen to what he said re: the width of both ends. It makes sense. We don't have hockey here. Even if he did put the cup upside, for fuck's sake so what. I hate Def Leppard but I fail to see how that can be offensive unless you are so highly strung it's untrue. I love hockey and the NHL and have watched and supported it for years. (Bring back the Nordiques!)
Joe Elliott is British...hockey isn't exactly the local thing if you follow.
How the fuck would he know the nuances associated with the Cup?
Leppard rocked back in the day (saw them open for Ozzy during the Blizzard of Oz tour), but that was then, this is now. Why some of you would get so offended because the 50-something singer of a NWOBHM band accidently plopped the Cup upside down is pretty amusing...
Believe me, I'm sure some of the Red Wings have done far more scandalous things with that Cup!

yes but the Wings earned the right to do "scandalous" things. They won 16 hard fought games with all kinds of injuries, broken bones, strains, sprains, and plain old blood and guts.
Once you've done that you've earned the right to do whatever you want with the cup. And don't think for one second winning the cup wasn't one of the highlights of these guy's lives.
Don't believe me check out the picture of Ray Bourque the year the Av's won. The look on his face says it all
