GUNS N' ROSES Officially Confirms 'Chinese Democracy' Release Date, Offers More Details
- Oct. 22, 2008
|
|
Best Buy and Geffen Records announced that one of the most highly anticipated albums of all time, GUNS N' ROSES' "Chinese Democracy", will be available beginning November 23 at Best Buy and BestBuy.com on CD, vinyl, and digital downloads. The title track, the first single from the album, was released to radio today, October 22. "Chinese Democracy" is the first album of new material from one of rock's most influential bands since the 1991 simultaneous releases of "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II". "The release of 'Chinese Democracy' marks a historic moment in rock n' roll," said co-managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. "We're launching with a monumental campaign developed by Gary Arnold and the Best Buy team that matches the groundbreaking sound of the album itself. GUNS N' ROSES fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning." " 'Chinese Democracy' is one of the most highly anticipated albums in music history, and Best Buy is thrilled to deliver this explosive and previously elusive release to GUNS N' ROSES fans. Longtime fans will be rewarded for their patience and loyalty to this great band, while a new generation of fans will be blown away," said Gary Arnold, Senior Entertainment Officer for Best Buy. " Axl Rose is one of the most dynamic and gifted writers and performers in modern music. Best Buy is excited to work with Axl to make the release of 'Chinese Democracy' THE musical event of 2008!" " GUNS N' ROSES is THE premier American rock band," commented Steve Berman, President, Sales and Marketing, Interscope Geffen A&M Records. "Partnering with Gary and everyone at Best Buy to release one of rock's most anticipated and legendary albums is truly a moment in music history. We're thrilled to be able to announce that 'Chinese Democracy' is coming, it's coming this year, and it's coming to Best Buy." Produced by Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo, the album, which will be released on Black Frog/ Geffen Records, includes 14 tracks. "Shackler's Revenge" debuted September 14 through the Rock Band 2 videogame and "If The World" can be heard in the film "Body Of Lies", which premiered on October 11. "Chinese Democracy" is being released in three formats: CD, Vinyl LP (with a free digital download of the tracks), and as a digital album. Pre-orders at www.BestBuy.com/chinesedemocracy begin today. The entire new GUNS N' ROSES single, "Chinese Democracy", can be streamed using the Imeem Music player below. This IS NOT G n' R in any sense except for having the same voice on it from previous efforts. The riff is mediocore at best. Guitar sound at the very beginning is just way too "pro tools" canned sounding. Sounds like they didn't use a mic/amp setup but instead opted for a shitty ass line 6 pod plug-in. You never got that with original guns. It was always sm57 in front of a marshall stack with a kick ass les paul running into it. It had balls. This has a vagina.

This album has arrived waaaaaaaay too late. Had it been released in the 90's it would have been current. Releasing it today makes it more like a nostalgia album. Maybe Scott Weiland can open for GnR and call it:

I love the old Guns but i'm very happy that Axl comes back. I think it's great for rock n' roll and i don't care about the old band. All they can do without Axl is blues based songs or generic rock like VR. And now listen to what Axl can do. Listen to that fuckin solo. I don't miss Slash since the last good solo he did was on Use your Illusions.
I just listen to the music and this kicks serious ass and i can understand how some people can't grasp the depth of it.

Does anyone (here) speak Chinese?
Once this damn record is out there, the real fun will begin - mixing n' matching the official tracks with the many, many 'leaks.' And of course, the storm of hilarity over those who like it opposed by those who do not will go on for months.
Websites will spring up - discussions (arguments) surrounding the definitive version of Chinese democracy will ensue.
And just to spice things up - Axl will release a remastered/ remixed version containing 'bonus' tracks.
The furor surrounding Chinese Democracy is not done yet - not even by a long shot.

Your argument is about 15 years too late that it's not the "real GNR" -- the real GNR died when Izzy left -- it's about the voice of Axl and the songwriting in this band, not the musicians. And it's always been that way. I loved Slash and Duff, but Slash is overrated, face it. VR sucks. Badly. Go see the new GNR live before you dis them - Axl is the greatest showman of our generation.

I can't remember any movie, CD, or other piece of singular media entertainment ever with as much speculation, anticipation, and/or discussion pre-release. People have been waiting for this record for a long time and the longer they had to wait, the more it was scrutinized. So, what is Axl Rose to do?
It is clear he loses credibility with the current metal crowd immediately (just read through the comical postings on Blabbermouth). If they don't feel like they can't hang out in the artist's garage during rehearsal or sense for even a moment their underground allegiance is crossed, he is immediately labeled a pussy and a quick target for humiliation. These listeners (consumers) are brutal, opinionated, and quick to point the finger. It is not their fault, they were just raised that way. Their whole entertainment experience of sight and sound has always been immediate and processed for them from day one. They do not know what it means to sit in their bedroom actually holding an LP reading liner notes and creating the image for themselves utilizing their imagination (and here is the key) MULTIPLE TIMES. The kids today do not "experience" music as the auditory feast it was once intended to be. So, dropping a CD like Chinese Democracy into the laps of these listeners is like asking a fourth grader to write a three page essay on the philosophical interpretations of PINK FLOYD'S THE WALL out of sequence via MP3 snippets and over a long stretch of time. It is a no win situation for GNR and it will kill a large portion of their sales percentage. These kids have an enormous sense of integrity that is linked to their primary self worth. So anyone in their eyes that screws them (ie: waiting 14 years for a CD they are used to obtaining 14 seconds after they hear about it) becomes a target of their opinion through blogs and message boards all over the planet. Chinese Democracy was slaughtered before it was ever properly introduced. These kids wanted Michael Angelo to finish the ceiling of what is expected to be the Sistine Chapel of their generation on their timeline, not that of the artist. In addition, I would also suggest that a large demographic of "old school" listeners have also fallen into the trap. What I want, what I expect, RIGHT NOW. It says a lot about our society in general these days. To quote the current metal overlords, "Sad, but true." (Note to media: Sook just gave Metallica props. The seventh seal has broken).
With that said one has to ask , "Can Chinese Democracy succeed?" From a sales point of view, the CD should kill on curiosity alone. Add together the million or so people who are going to pick it up no matter what with the millions who will walk into Best Buy and go, "Oh, hey. There is that record I keep hearing about. I'll pick it up for $10 bucks." Plus the I-Tunes orders, as well. This should amount to around two million, maybe even three million which is beyond respectable these days. If the CD is ridiculously good, add another million. So, dissemination of the product won't be an issue. The name Guns N Roses is a guaranteed seller, especially with all the stigmitism attached. They have not become irrelevant.
For me, the real question will be, does it deliver? Does the music trigger that intangible sensation in my gut that makes everything pronounced? I am an unapologetic fan of Axl Rose. I dig the colorful Howard Hughes mentality, the pageantry of eccentricity, and the whole misunderstood artist bravado. It is what I want in my rock stars. Not some nincompoop in a Burzum t-shirt growling into the mic about Satan (note: I am not bashing Burzum. Their influence on their particular scene cannot be ignored. Just not my thing. I would never go out of my way to publically comment on something that is not my scene. Why the harder metal fans need to comment on GNR so viciously just enforces my previous points about today's metal scene). I dig classic, timeless, complex music delivered by talented players who focus hard on their craft. For me, the new GNR sound is more akin to my taste today rather than yesterday. Great artists mature naturally over their careers. I don't want to hear Appetite for Destruction now anymore than I wanted to hear Meet the Beatles when I first heard the White Album. It's why I think people need to sit back and give this record a solid listen a few times before commenting. There is no doubt that the record is intended to be a deep listen with many layers, colors, sounds, and emotion. It would be a travesty to comment on the full experience over a posted MP3 over the internet. Again, I would submit anyone taking in this record piecemeal is potentially shortchanging themselves and will be setting themselves up for biased and unfair scrutiny. I'm speculating this is a sit down affair that will require a great deal of attention to fully capture what is being offered.
Did I listen to the single? Of course I did. Chinese Democracy is coming and I for one, am very excited.

I agree with fuckinghateitall, for the most part. It sounds like a Wal-Mart guitar and Crate amp running through a cellphone.
But, judging from the little I've heard from the various GNR alumni from the '90s to the present, to think that a reunited GNR could do much better is asking a bit too much.

The problem today is that nobody has to answer to anyone for their comments. Anonymous posts from faceless posters who would undoubtedly drop to their knees and suck Axl's cock in a instant if they were to see him in person.
Bash me all you want...it doesnt change the fact that this version of Guns N' Roses puts on a better live show, performance and sound-wise. It's as unfair to expect them to make Appetite 2 as it is to expect Metallica to write Puppets 2, Aerosmith to do another Toys in the Attic, or even have the Beastie Boys do another Lisenced to Ill. They are at different points in life, and careers and people change and do different things with their talent (and, make no mistake about it, Axl is one of the most talented musicians ever...everyone in VR would not disagree with that). If you can't support the band or artist like you once would have, then don't...there is no need for the kind of career sabotage that goes on here on this site and others.
...and I'm spent...

For me Gun's was about REAL raw power. Fuckin' energy. Emotional guitar solos. But this shit? WTF? A WHAMMY PEDAL on the guitar solos!? Such a joke. Listen to the opening riff on "Out ta get me". So fucking intense. You wanna throw a brick through a car windshield!

"The release of 'Chinese Democracy' marks a historic moment in rock n' roll,"
"GUNS N' ROSES is THE premier American rock band," commented Steve Berman, President, Sales and Marketing,
WOW, these record executives and marketing people will make rediculous statements and the sad thing is people will buy into the hype and buy this crap and actually thnk it's the real GNR.
Nothing would make me happier than to see this thing flop and have A. rose disappear from music forever.
Unfortunately all you have to do is lie and stick the name Guns and Roses on a Cd and it will sell to all the minions out there.
Yeah, I also can't wait for that GNR Guitar Hero and Rock band game! I'm sure it will be a groundbreaking game just like the new "GNR" album.
Go ahead and give your money to A. Rose so he can start working on the follow up to CM.

I saw that someone wasted no time and re-mixed axl's vocals into this tune.

Looks like the hype machine is just gearing up!

I'm just glad I haven't been following this album's saga as intensely as some. I first heard a leak of "Better" back in 2006, whereas some fans have been anticipating the release of Chinese Democracy since 1996!

This shit sucks. The song was written, what, in 1995?
Doesn't go anywhere, generic booty riff, no true chorus, no hook, no nothing.
Just suck it up Axl, keep Buckethead, then go get Sorum, Duff and Slash and fucking do it true.

As said by several others, a brilliant post. Totally agree with you. Im old enough to remember what it was like to have an L.P in my hands and be able to listen to it and use my imagination. I also remember what it was like to read all the old Magazines, BEFORE the Internet, which was the only way you could find out what all your favorite bands were up to...all the mistique around music and great bands is gone these days, but I guess thats just the changing face of the world.
Im sure some smart ass prick will come on here and tell all of us "oldies" to get fucked or whatever...its typical of the people who come here.
I hope the CD rules. Welcome back Axl.

I really could give a damn about this album... ten years ago I would have bought it, but now who really cares. There are so many new interesting bands I would rather spend my money on. It's a day late and a dollar short in my book.

GOKINGSGO I totally agree. Glad someone took the time.
I'm not a great GNR fan but I actually dig this track. It could easyly be some present act playing. To me the only thing that matters is the track not the history of who made it.
Still remmember getting my Balls to the wall record without having a stereo to play it on. Needed my sisters friend to record it to tape for me. ahhh the anticipation.
