SCOTT WEILAND Unsure Of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' Future
- Oct. 22, 2008
|
|
The Pulse of Radio reports that STONE TEMPLE PILOTS begins the final week of its six-month-long reunion tour on Wednesday (October 22) in Hidalgo, Texas, with the trek wrapping up on October 31 in Pelham, Alabama. What happens after that? Although the band has talked about making a new studio album, singer Scott Weiland told The Pulse of Radio he's not so sure that will happen. "I don't know where things are gonna go with STP," he said. "It was sad to find out that we're still in some way locked in a contract with Atlantic Records, which is a travesty, actually. If it ends up being that we have to, you know, make a certain amount of records for Atlantic in order to be free, then I don't know if I have that in me." Atlantic Records filed a lawsuit in June claiming that Weiland and STP drummer Eric Kretz had threatened to stop performing and wanted to terminate their contract with the label unless it was changed. The band issued a response saying that it was "deeply disappointed" to see that the label had filed the "surprise lawsuit" during the middle of "what were believed to be cordial and positive discussions about STP returning to the studio to make a new album after five years." Atlantic stated in the suit that it wanted the group to record up to three more albums. Meanwhile, Weiland will release his second solo effort, "Happy in Galoshes", on November 25 through his own Softdrive label, with a single called "Missing Cleveland" headed to radio two weeks earlier. The vocalist plans to hit the road behind the new disc in January.

Oh my God! I can't believe your boss is actually trying to make you do work!!!! Look assholes, you signed the deal, and its nobody's fault but yours that you were a piece of shit junkie and couldn't keep the band together. Just think, if you hadn't been a piece of shit junkie and got fired, those three records would be done and you would be free to sign your Live Nation deal and get that Metallica/U2 money.
For those of you that don't get it, Stone Temple Pilots are basically upset because they signed a deal based on the strength of Core for, I believe 6 albums and a G.H. collection, which is pretty standard. They probably got really good money, for 1994 that is. But Scott becomes a junkie and it takes the rest of the decade to record the first three albums, then the band breaks up. But, as many bands want, the contract was open ended. This is usually beneficial for bands because they aren't on a strict deadline like they were back in the day (see lyrics to "Smoke on the Water", Deep Purple had deadlines back then). But it seems to be fucking them now . Nobodies fault but theirs. Weiland should be fucking thankfull that he wasn't individually signed so could do the solo thing and the VR thing. Just ask Warner Bros., who had to shell out a ton of money to Geffen when Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen, or Sebastian Bach who basically had to sit on his ass for several years until his Atlantic deal ran out. They wouldn't put out a solo album, but he wasn't free to leave either. STP needs to quit crying and make an album, or shut up and go home.

but i can't help but believe that the tour was strictly money related. Weiland told Slash himself that concert promoters were throwing a lot of money at them for a reunion. And according to various reports, Scott seems to keep to himself, ie: his own trailer. Doesn't really mingle or hang out with the rest of the band. That can't be good. He's pulled a bunch of shenanigans in the last few months alone (it seems), I can't see how that didn't piss of the rest of the guys.
On the flipside, between Talk Show and Army Of Anyone, the others haven't really had much commercial success. Despite Scott's first album selling squat, he still had success with VR. And I guess now we'll see how Happy In Galoshes does.
You can argue that VR's success was due to Slash, but with the success of Snakepit, I don't buy that.

First he bitches about VR and leaves and says "oh yeah reunion tour first with STP, then studio album". now he's whining cause he has a record deal. just do man and shut up. you know the record is going to sell decently. and nobody's fault except your own for signing a contract. if you didnt want to do more than a couple of albums you should have thought of that before you signed on. Idiot. This guys is up there with Chris Cornell now for leaving good projects behind for what...a solo career? don't make me laugh!

You know how many unknown bands would give anything to make one album with Atlantic Records, and this fucking pussy is all "I don't know if I have it in me.." You asshole, you're living the dream that so many will never realize because of pop trends and bad luck, and you can't even see your good fortune. Fuck you Scott Weiland.

They just need to pull a Neil Youg and make a few "Experimental" records. Hell, go Old school if they have to. Pump out 3 albums in a year and be done with it.

wants to be tied to a corporate label anymore. That's what I get from this. We'll most likely see a renegotiation of the contract, all parties happy, and new music by next fall.
