LED ZEPPELIN Bassist On Singer Search: We're Not Looking For ROBERT PLANT Clone
- Oct. 28, 2008
|
|
LED ZEPPELIN bassist John Paul Jones has spoken to BBC Radio Devon about reports that he, guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Jason Bonham — following the band's one off appearance at O2 Arena, London last year — were planning to tour and record but without frontman Robert Plant. Jones, speaking at a guitar show in Exeter, Devon, UK said: "We are trying out a couple of singers. We want to do it. It's sounding great and we want to get on and get out there." According to BBC News, Jones said that he and the other members of LED ZEPPELIN did not want a mere copy of Plant. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be on board." He added: "The most pleasure is making music. I love listening to it, but nothing as much fun as having an instrument in my hand and communicating with people." He said preparation for the London show had been "very hard work", but everything had clicked on the night. "It felt like the next night of the last tour."

... Very true. The only logical choice in a situation like this would be Seth Putnam. I really don't see who else could bring the magic to a band like this.
I was thinking Oderus at first, but when you said Putnam, it just made sense.

Much as I hate to say it, I have to agree with L. This might not be the brightest idea Zep has ever had---then again, they might just be trying to irk Robert Plant into going their way. It's not like Jimmy Page has never done that before.;)
But seriously, if they're talking about a new album and tour as Led Zeppelin without Plant, I dunno. Black Sabbath at least had an existing body of work with Ronnie James Dio before they went out as Heaven and Hell....

He's a decent singer, reminds me of Chris Cornell who would also be a good choide.

What a horrible idea. It was bad enough John Bonham isn't alive, but to have to continue on without Plant (when he's still alive) is just weird. I thought Myles Kennedy would be good, but I'm thinking Pat Monahan from Train would be even better. They're known for their Zep Covers..

ya, when they get this "new" singer they can decide on a new name as well! it will NOT be Led Zeppelin.
I never thought that something like this would ever happen. JPJ and JP taking another singer out and calling then LZ is like a nightmare, they are totally ruining the good name and integrity of the name Led Zeppelin.

The rumors have been there for years and now we know the truth. Plant is a LaVeyan Satanist in the truest sense of the word. His selfishness knows no bounds. Always satisfying and putting him self first, before the band and his fans, and following the Satanic mantra, ‘Do what thou wilt is the whole of the law’. He only did the O2 because he said the previous reunions were shite, not for Ahmet but him himself. This is just one of a million examples. Believe me I know what I’m talking about

on one hand I can't imagine changing Zep so drastically by giving it a new voice but on the other hand it seems like the other members genually want to go out and make more music. Who can blame them? And if you think about it...why should they have to start from the beginning (new band, new name etc) just b\c Plant doesn't want to play ball?
I will be torn (as I'm sure most fans will be) if this happens but I will be interested to hear the new music that they create and give it a fair chance.

Myles Kennedy is the man. Great vocalist with a plus: He has the ability to bring good songs to the projects he's involved in, as he did with Alter Bridge. Blackbird's a good example. Of course, it should be done W/out the Led Zeppelin name on it.

If Plant doesnt want to do it then be it!! if the others want to tour then either do it with different name or just Zeppilin + singer like Queen but that would be little different because Plant is alive. And the last album from Plant was very good and also the album he did with Krauss. and so what John Paul Jones is old?? they are all old and still many times better then the popular bands today or the last 10-15 years and if they would make an album it would bet better then that stuff also. maybe not as good as the old Zeppelin albums but so what, i and millions of others would love to hear it. i would also bet on that they are just doing this for fun not for the money but thats a good plus. yea and the Coverdale/Page album didnt sound that much like Zeppelin, but of course a little, it had Page on it right? and is that so bad?

Rob Halford.
And fuck Plant for being a selfish prick. Raising Sands is a great album and all, but he should put that shit on hold for a year or so and just do this for the fans who put him there in the first place.
If not, for charity at least. A tour of this caliber would be a fucking sold-out goldmine!

I give Robert a lot of credit for not wanting to tour under the Zep name. To me it shows he doesn't want to tarnish Zeppelins image.
He could make millions but he chooses not to and people here call him selfish?
If Page and the rest of the band want to tour fine, they have a right top plat together... but don't do it under the Zep name.

You have to be fucking kidding me. The day Zeppelin tours without Robert Plant, I'll sell all my fucking Zeppelin albums...no all my fucking albums and move to Mexico selling hot-dogs. Your Mom's Best Friend: as you can see from my screenname, I'm a big Priest fan, but Halford's voice is completely shot, even I can admit that. I mean, these guys can do whatever the fuck they want with their careers, but to tarnish the legacy and legend of Led Zeppelin, as well as dishonor the name of John Bonham, who is Plant's good friend, is absolutely fucking rediculous. If they plan on touring under the banner "Led Zeppelin" without Plant and Bonham, they shouldn't expect but just a couple thousand people at each show they do. This is almost like Van Halen touring without Michael Anthony, god forbid......oh wait....

Specifically, I don't get this notion some have that Plant somehow "owes" it to the fans to do the reunion. If his heart's not into it, or he feels like he physically couldn't cut a whole tour of wailing high notes at his age, how is he doing the "fans" a favor, or showing them "respect" by offering up a lukewarm or inferior performance every night? If you were really a "fan", you'd respect his wishes. He's already made history, how about showing him a little respect for that?

Robert has been set against a tour long before this recent news came to light
Jimmy and JPJ connected again during rehearsals for the 02 and Page has been working on new material for a new album for over four years.
Plant has stuck to his original statement that the 02 was one time reunion gig. Fine for him, why should Jimmy Page and JPJ sit around and wait for Robert to possibly change his mind.
Page, Jones and Jason Bonham should move on; find a new singer as Jones said not a Robert clone, record a new album and hit the road. People get to hung up on this kind of stuff as if the world would end if Page and Jones tour as Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant; get real: life goes on.
I'm all for whatever Page and Jones put forth, Plant wants to do the bluegrass stuff and that's great for him I'm not a huge fan of his new adventure, let's see what the two great masterminds of Rock & Roll can do without him. Wouldn't that be great if Page, JPJ, Jason and new Singer record a great new album and just tour sounding awesome. It wouldn't surprise me.
