CREAM's BRUCE Slams LED ZEPPELIN: 'You've Always Been Crap And You'll Never Be Anything Else'

Jack Bruce picked up the Classic Album gong for CREAM's "Disraeli Gears" at last night's Marshall Classic Rock Roll Of Honour held at London's Park Lane Hotel. After the ceremony, Classic Rock magazine's Dave Ling grabbed Bruce for a quickfire interview — and was stunned when the legendary bassist launched into an extraordinary anti- LED ZEPPELIN tirade. An excerpt from the chat follows below. Classic Rock: The million dollar question: Are CREAM going to do anything again? Jack Bruce: Oh yeah, I'm sure we will. But we'll have Todd Rundgren [who's just walked by] in the band by then. Classic Rock: It's good news that there might be more from CREAM. Jack Bruce: Well, the trouble is that I'm doing so many amazing things on my own. CREAM is just a band from many, many years ago, and we did do something [referring to the reunion shows in 2005]… Everybody talks about LED ZEPPELIN, and they played one fucking gig — one fucking lame gig — while CREAM did weeks of gigs; proper gigs, not just a lame gig like ZEPPELIN did, with all the [vocal] keys lowered and everything. We played everything in the original keys. [Becoming animated]: Fuck off, ZEPPELIN, you're crap. You've always been crap and you'll never be anything else. The worst thing is that people believe the crap that they're sold. CREAM is 10 times the band that LED ZEPPELIN is. Classic Rock: That's a bold opinion. Jack Bruce: What? You're gonna compare Eric Clapton with that fucking Jimmy Page? Would you really compare that? Classic Rock: To be fair, they're different kinds of player, aren't they? Jack Bruce: No! Out of all the bands to have ever reformed, everyone in Cream needed to pull there ass out of their heads to gig again, and they did it because that is what the fans wanted and they did it for the fans. It's time for Robert to do the same.
Oh yeah, I do like the part where Jack says I am doing so many amazing things on my own, and that Cream was many many years ago...yet, the dudes solo set list for the past 35 years is comprised mainly of Cream songs. He's the Joe Lynn Turner of the 60's.

I saw both bands reunion shows, Cream was right on it, Jack Bruce can still sing great and play complicated bass lines at the same time. Good for him to spout off, I get tired of the same bullshit lame banter. Christ, I'd rather listen to "very eavy, very umble" than Led Zeppelin 1 or 2.
Also Ian Gillan still crushes Robert Plant on vocals.

Jimmy changed the way rock bands record. No one ever seems to give him the proper credit he deserves for his production smarts. But even as a guitar player I hear all these retards saying he was sloppy well that is because he was always on the edge re-inventing the guitar in the moment when he played live. He was fearless. This may be the greatest article I've ever read on Blabbermouth. Jack's still crazy, I love it. He's one dude that never got his due. All doubters are referred to his solo albums, chiefly Songs for a Tailor, Harmony Row, and Out of the Storm. Jack Bruce is the most under appreciated genius in the history of rock music. Clapton has the rep, but Bruce was the MAN in Cream. Even in the long jams, he was the one leading the way along with Ginger. Hail Jack Bruce! Nice to see all the support for him in this thread.

Envy can be an evil self-destructive weapon. It's obvious that you have mastered the art of using that weapon to inadvertantly smear the name your mates in Cream worked so hard to build. It's really a simple equation Sir. Check album sales, tour revenue, merch revenue, etc. I would say that Zeppelin easily hands you your ass on a platter.
You sling mud at the fact that Plany sang soem of the tunes in a lower key at the O2 show. Well, I would certainly like to see you belt those tunes out in the exact same pitch 25-30 years after they were originally recorded. If Jack Bruce wasn't jealous he wouldn't have said anything about Led Zeppelin. Bruce didn't take the time to bad mouth Poison etc.. or a band that posed no threat.
Led Zeppelin, love them or hate them, it isn't classy to bitch about a band that has had more commercial success, more longevity, sold more units etc..
If Jack Bruce wasn't an insecure ass, perhaps Cream would have lasted more than 2 1/2 years and his former band may have had the lasting impact, hype or whatever you want to define it as.

Yes, Zeppellin are overrated. i used to hate the way music journalists kissed the ass of Zep while making snide and arrogant remarks about Sabbath.
That said, Zeppelin are a great band.
Clapton, however, is the most overrated guitarist in rock history. Average blues licks borrowed from Albert King in the 60s, then from the 70s on the blandest middle of the road music you could imagine. A fair player, but way, way overrated.

Jack as well as Ginger have always been very bitter and have a habit of ripping their peers. They have always been snobbish and viewed themselves as equal to the jazzers and saw rock and rollers as musically inept wannabes. Both Jack and Ginger played in Graham Bonds band in the earlier 60s. Plus them and EC have always slammed metal at every opportunity when posed the question of Cream being forefathers of Heavy Metal. That said, despite being assholes Cream were a blistering live act, especially late 67 to early 68.
Cream were a major influence on Black Sabbath and Queen, but bore no influence on Zep.
Page was all about early rockabilly, Chicago blues and folk. Ditto Plant, but throw in some acid fried west coast pysch. Bonzo and Jones were Motown and Soul freaks.

BRUCE is amazing.....so is BAKER and CLAPTON
as a three piece they are as solid as a band with 15 members
I was at 1 of the reunion shows and it was TOP NOTCH. I said it from the get-go....ZEP's reunion was awful. They tuned down, and PLANT still coundn't hit the notes. It was sad to watch.
CREAM is amazing. Baker was 1 of the first to add double bass in. and his rhythm work with BRUCE is unmatched

and keep in mind cream was only around a FEW SHORT YEARS...and only recorded 3 albums if I remember correctly.
EVEN in terms of of gigs they played alot while together...but they were only together 4 years or so.
WHAT THEY DID IN THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME is amazing, and to be that huge, with all those hits and great songs is UNMATCHED by any other artists to date
some of zeps later material is not that good. and CREAM always gave credit to their BLUES HEROS....while ZEP ripped off lyric lines and guitar parts without giving credit

...that Zep "borrowed" a few parts from many many songs, one being the overrated Stairway to Heaven? I think Achilles Last Stand was better and I personally hate Zeppelin.
Doesn't matter what Mr. Bruce says. At the time, Clapton and Page were nothing compared to Blackmore, Fripp, Hackett and Lifeson, IMHO. But of course we are all entitled to our own honest opinions. Just like Slayer vs. Metallica, Morbid Angel vs. Deicide, Maiden vs. Priest. Every genre has its fan favorites.

Ah, My zepfan43, who is Tommy Iommi? I've heard of Tony Iommi.
Page is a great blues / folk / hard rock guitarist, but Iommi is more groundbreaking and influential. Sabbath invented a new genre of music, Zepellin pilfered existing genres.
Who did Zep give birth to? 80s cock rock. Sabbath spawned real metal bands.
Page and Iommi are both gods, but I'd give Iommi far more kudos.

Are probably the only ones to make that sort of statement upon the Zep... and so it is really up to the gods themselves, except us, in which I can say that as much as I love Zeppelin, I love even more to hear somebody spank them and call em up to raise their game in such a fashion.

Page may be somewhat overrated, especially live, but its about the songs, not that Cream is bad, but Zep had the catelogue. And the intrigue. JB is very bitter too...Clapton can be a bore too, post Cream. 90% of his solo stuff was not written by him.

Cream was a group comprised of 3 soloists....Clapton admitted to that years ago. Zeppelin was a band consisting of four members making one common sound.

Cream's gigs were a pay day first and foremost. They were uninspired, stand up there like a zombie and play like you'd rather be doing something else.
I agree, Zep shouldn't reunite, but Page is a much better guitarist...ok, so he's got a sloppy style...but that's part of his greatness...his songwriting and production skills blow Clapton out of the water...
I've always liked Cream, but it was always because of Bruce's songwriting...the "Clapton is God" bullshit...is just that...BULL SHIT....it's just that nobody else that was popular was playing like that...
Then came Jimi and blew everyone away..."Hendrix is God" would have been more of a right on sentiment.
But as far as Zep vs Cream goes,
Plant was a better singer, Page was a better guitarist, Jones was a better bassist, and Bonham was a better drummer. And they were better songwriters.
YEAH, I drank the Zep Kool-Aid....and what?
Bruce can go f' himself.

Cream were soloist, exactly why Clapton wanted to leave to get to something more organic. Zep was a bombastic rock band. I agree, they shouldn't reunite, played down a step, its a shell of what it was...as was Cream. EC playing CReam on a strat, break out the SG! But Zep had the great tunes, production, mystery, front man, and end of the world drummer. Page was a sloppy mess at times live, especially later in career. The captured the audiences mind more though, & the tunes were great.

What sort of person is Jack Bruce? I mean to come out and say those rediculous things about Led Zeppelin is just pathetic. I think he's just very jealous that Led Zeppelin achieved such greatness and financial rewards over their career and beyond. He better not say that Clapton is or was ever a better guitarist than Jimmy Page. You only have to look at the legacy of Jimmy's guitar work, the virtuosity and diversity of his playing. Did Clapton ever write a Stairway to Heaven or a Kashmir? Did he ever write a Black Dog or a Since I've been Loving You? No he did'nt even though some of his songs are brilliant. You see the thing that sets them both apart in my opinion is the fact that Jimmy can pick up a guitar and play and people hearing it would say, who's playing that? Whereas Clapton is allways predictable. I'm afraid I got sick of Cream all those years ago and I did'nt like their reunion DVD in 2005. I bought it and it was a real waste of money in my opinion. Anyway I think Jack Bruce should think a bit more positively when he critisizes other great musicians. It was very sad to read his words. And I can only think that he is a very bitter man.

While Jack Bruce is a great player who has been on some killer jazz albums, this makes him look like a pretentious, jealous, dickhead. Granted, he could play John Paul Jones under the table, it seems that he's angry because he is not as well known, which he should fucking get over. Yes, Zeppelin is over rated and lame, but standing there and bitching is just as lame. However, Eric Clapton is just as lame as Jimmy Page, all Clapton did is be some old white man that stole a bunch of blues licks and people think he's hot shit, inspiring a whole generation of 40 to 50 year businessman to think he's a legit player. At the end of the day, John Mclaughlin and the whole Mahavishnu Orchestra should just fly out of the sky and put everyone in their place.
