MACHINE HEAD's PHIL DEMMEL On 'Chinese Democracy', 'Death Magnetic' And Loss Of His Father - Nov. 11, 2008
Mia Timpano, a metal writer and broadcaster from Melbourne, Australia, recently conducted a backstage interview with MACHINE HEAD guitarist Phil Demmel. The 18-minute chat, which originally aired on the Melbourne radio station 3RRR 102.7 FM, can be streamed and/or downloaded as an MP3 audio file at this location. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow below.

On whether he cares at all that GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", is finally coming out:

"I don't care. You know, Robb [Flynn] just brought it up to me in the airport on the way over. He was talking about the new 'Celebrity Rehab' show in America, and how it's got Steven Adler [original GUNS N' ROSES drummer] on it, and what a mess Adler is, and he's talking about Slash, and how he hates Slash because he didn't ask him to play on his solo record, and it's just the whole GUNS N' ROSES thing, man. I don't care, man. I really don't. I didn't really like VELVET REVOLVER all that much. And Axl [Rose] has got Buckethead to play with him? He's got the MARILYN MANSON guy playing guitar with him too? I don't even know what's going on in that camp anymore. But, I mean [he's] an amazing songwriter, so I'll listen to it . . . You mix endless amounts of money with, you know, drug addicts, and just the kind of individuals that they are, and that's what's gonna happen. MÖTLEY CRÜE, the same thing. I was reading Nikki Sixx's book, and it's just personalities and money."

On whether he thinks the idea that emotionally damaged people and outcasts are not exclusive to metal (and that if you went to an ELTON JOHN concert you would find the same amount of disenfranchised people) has any basis in reality:

"Yeah, I think there's basis. I just think that there's that demographic in human beings. There's gonna be that percentage of whatever, and such a great percent of that is gonna be into music. So, of course, they're going to go to those shows. And, of course, you're going to have your dysfunctioned and your disenfranchised or whatever. So yeah, I believe that. I believe that a lot of metal fans are ELTON JOHN fans, too." [Laughs] [Interviewer: "I am, actually!"] "I am as well. That was the first record I ever owned. ELTON JOHN's 'Greatest Hits'."

On METALLICA's "Death Magnetic":

"I think it's their best record since the 'black' record. I like half of it, that I really like. I think it's great ideas. I love that they're playing fast again. I think the songs are a little long, but I think it's such a step in the right direction for me with that band. 'Cause it was… 'St. Anger', I heard a couple of tunes, and it was just like, 'Fuck…' I didn't buy it. I hadn't bought [a METALLICA album] since the 'black' record. I think it's something that they should be doing. Just them getting the fire back. We did four shows with them last year, and seeing them just having fun playing — they're playing 'Damage Inc.' and 'No Remorse' and all these great tunes — I think that they're back to just really having fun and being a band again. I think they're on the right track."

On whether he has ever experienced any kind of great pain in life:

"Yeah. Yeah, I have. This past year has been really hard for me. My father passed away a year ago. And the circumstances in which it happened… it was really hard for me and I'm still… I've spent the past year drunk. I quit drinking a couple of months ago to kinda deal with it. So it's been really trying for me, so. . . It happened to me when I was on tour. I was in Italy. And we were playing. And we were playing 'Descend the Shades of Night'. It's a song about death. His health had been declining, and I would think of him during the song, and I cried during the song sometimes when we'd play. . . So we had gone on to play the show, and during the show I passed out on stage, during the song. So I kinda came to, and I've had a history of blackouts. So they take me out after, and we were on our way to Zurich the next day, and I just kinda felt weird on the way there. Woke up to a call from my sister. And it was a voicemail, 'Hey, we really need you to call home. We need to speak with you.' Called home, and she gave me the news that my dad had passed. So it was kinda shocking. I knew that it was coming, but you're never ready. You're never ready to hear that news. So we decided to play the show and I was gonna fly back home. Dave [McClain], my drummer, he kept asking me, 'What time did it happen? What time did he die?' And I said, 'Man, I don't know.' And I did the math. So what happened was that [my Dad] got out of his dialysis, sat in his car, and he took they keys and set them on dashboard and just went to sleep. So it happened at the same time I passed out on stage. And just knowing that he touched me in that way was just … it was a blessing, but it still was hard to deal with. It's amazing, but it's just really hard to know that and all he circumstances. So that was it. That's my story."

On whether he has a message for the kids:

"Yeah, be honest, man. Honesty is so important in every walk of life. Be it with your parents, be it with your friends, your girlfriends, your.. whoever, your bandmates, your music. Just be honest and be true to yourself. And I don't think that you can fail."

Yea, it's pretty funny how most metalheads complain that everyone isn't true to themselves and is just doing what everyone else is doing. Then you step back and see everyone with identical hair, identical clothes, a jean jacket with patches on it, piercings and tats all over the place, and they're all completely piss drunk and full of drugs. Brilliant.

I agree. It's so funny how counter-cultures demand just as much conformity from their constituants as mainstream culture.

Now go buy a black t-shirt and whatever you do, don't smile.

Why does Rob Flynn hates Slash just because Slash didn't ask him to play on his record? And what would thrash metal riffs be doing on a Slash solo album? Plain stupidity

He meant Steven Adler was talking about hating Slash because he wasn't asked to play on his solo record.
But even that was false, for the simple reason, having watched the show, that Steven Adler actually cried because Slash hadn't asked him, and then weont on to cry and say he just wants his best friend back (meaning Slash) because he means everything in the world to him. So Phil Demmel is wrong AGAIN!

It seems to me that a lot of people in the music industry are very Jealous of the attention Guns N Roses and their former members seems to get. Someone is always doing an interview that just seems to come over as being full of jealousy. John Bon Jovi and now this guy.

No secret GNR was and will be one of the greatest names ever.

No one's jealous of GNR.

GNR isn't GNR anymore. They are Axl's solo side project concept compilation band. The music's not bad.. but let's be honest.. it's not GNR by any means other than the vocals. And for them to take all this fucking time to make a record is just ridiculous.

So like I said, people aren't jealous, they just don't give a shit anymore.

I'm old. I bought Master of Puppets in the 8th grade. I saw Pantera play Joe's Garage and the Tombstone Factory with 150 people in the room. I was such a rebel with long hair and (later on) tattoos.

Then I noticed that all Marilyn Manson's fans looked the same. Then I went to an OzzFest in the late 90s and realized, SO DO THE METALHEADS!!

Each group conforms to be non-conformist. Pink Floys said it way back when. You're a Sheep, Dog, or Pig. We just happen to be sporting Vans and Chucks wearing cammo shorts and a black T-Shirt. Baaaa-Baaaaa!

Don't be sad. Have fun with it. That's why I like to wear Megadeth shirts to Metallica shows and Ozzy shirts to Heaven and Hell! Etc....

I think it's funny that he says the songs on Death Magnetic are too long, when they have some songs on The Blackening that are 9-10 minutes.

Everybody is a conformist to something. No matter what group you associate yourself with, people stay within the rules of that group. That is just human nature.

ummm...not everything is judged on how you look, dress, etc. I'm average looking (my job requires it) and I can stand out with my personality. Besides, no one is completely original anymore. As long as you're honest with yourself, that's all that matters. You shouldn't have to constantly worry about if you're different enough from those around you. For example, one time I went to a small bar show. This other guy I don't know and myself wore the same shirt. He gave me the evil eye all night. Me? I just laughed it off, which probably pissed him off even more. So something as pointless as "originality" ruined his night.

Aye. Not everyone thinks they're radically different with the way they dress . My friends and I dress the way we do because it's comfortable for us. Personally I wear dark clothing because I think I look like shit in most colors, I stick to blacks, greys, and dark blues because I like how they look with my hair and eyes... and I absolutely hate when other people dress in trendy and/or bright clothing... it makes them unbearable to observe.

I never dress up... ever. I think suits and ties and such look like absolute garbage... all boxy and nasty and abnormally shaped. Eew...just makes you look like you try too hard.

Anyway, as for the interview. I love the guys from machine head. They're always so cool and level-headed...write killer riffs... poignant songs. All around badass, Machine Fuckin' HEAD!!!

You have a right to your opinion, but your opinion fails. Machine Head is the one of the best things to happen to Heavy Metal. Their debut album, Burn My Eyes is amazing. One of the best Heavy Metal albums ever. It's not just heavy, it has a lot going on with sound, dynamics, and great singing.

Machine Head has not put one bad album out, including The Burning Red, and Supercharger. Every band has to change. They did, and they changed well. Robb Flynn is a brilliant songwriter. He goes deep with lyrical content, even if the songs are not directly about him. "A Nation On Fire," "A Thousand Lies," "Blank Generation," "Only The Names." He goes off even more on the Blackening.

Not only are their lyrics great, but Machine Head's music is well-arranged, and captures all different types of sound dynamics. Machine Head's cover of "Message In A Bottle"--from The Police--is sheer proof that they can step out of the Heavy Metal box, and show their diverse music influences.

I know many will beg to differ with me on my comments about The Burning Red and Supercharger, but those are great albums. Phil Demmel is a definite plus to Machine Head's line-up, and he has a great taste in Metal ranging from Thrash, and Death Metal to the traditional Metal sound.

Overall, Machine Head has delivered every album. They rule the Metal world!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, I don't see this thing with Buckethead as G 'N'R's guitarist as being anything unique like the mighty Slash who I'd rather hear anyday w/G'N'R's music over yet another shredder. I mean c'mon, Slash's playing is incredible with the feeling he expresses through those incredibley heart felt melodies he produces just blows away and of these guys who produce yet the same damn shredding sounds again and again. It's getting old. It's cool to apply shredding in moderation and when called for but to solely shred with a few slower notes in there is so predictabe and overdone. It just all sounds the same to me. It is just non-emotive. Slash, on the otherhand, sends chills down my spine everytime I hear one of his leads and I'd much rather feel something from the music I listen to than hear the diatonic/modal/harmonic minors played in their order (or not quite) as fast as possible so the player can overcome some ego issues. Fuck that. It's almost as if they don't know how to play with feeling at any speed at all and don't know how to play any speed but fast. I know this, because I went through this issue when I was younger: I could shred up and down but didn't know how to incorporate what I felt into a melodic, soulful lead. Speed comes with some practice but playing like Slash or better yet, creating leads like Slash, you either have, or do not have. This type of expression cannot be taught. Once you can express yourself this way, it is a great, healing type of thing. Great medicine if you will. He was a trademark sound of G'N'R and I wish he and the old crew were back with Axl - just like most do.
